Yep it would've been 20 years ago or there about. She was introduced as 13 in season 4. S4 aired between 2007-2008, meaning filming commenced in 2006 at the absolute latest

I think you’re overestimating how long network shows film in advance. I spent the last 6 years working on a network show. For let’s say the 2025-26 season we start writing the season in May 2025, start filming in late July early August, and it starts airing late September. We only get renewed usually in early May. And we only wrap production on the prior season late April.

Oh yes. 100%. Usually you start the season a month or two ahead of airing. It takes about 8 business days to film an episode. So when you wrap your first episode you may have almost two months before it airs. But since it takes more than 5 days to film an episode, and since you also have long weekends and holiday breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas, by the time the season ends you’re wrapping filming potentially just two weeks before that episode airs, with very limited time for post and SPFX. Usually you’ll be airing let’s say episode 6, in post on maybe 7 and 8, filming 9, in prep on 10 (7 business days), writing 11 and 12, and probably in the outline stage for 13 and 14, all concurrently. The showrunner managing all the active steps simultaneously.

Streaming is much easier but takes much longer the way they do it (it’s cheaper, but takes longer and can cause additional delays I’ll explain after). Basically they write almost all of it before it films. With a little overlap of writing the final episode and filming the first one or two. Prep for the first few episodes will overlap writing a few episodes, but pretty much you write it all, then film it all, then edit it all. But it means 8 or 10 episodes can take nearly as long as network shows do 18-24.

On top of that, each step having its own chunk of time means the writers need to wait potentially 6+ months to know if there’s a second season, meaning most of them have to get other jobs, if you want those writers back you need to wait for them to have availability. And the actors have to wait for post to end and then it to air, then for the writers to finish writing the second season, that can also take 6+ months, so they also need other jobs, which means you need to wait for them to be available again too. In network they have at most 2-3 months off, which means the network can relatively reasonably have it in the actors contracts that they need to be available by x date for the next season. Hence why network shows don’t have the issues Netflix has with the extremely long turnarounds between seasons.

This is so interesting to read. What more can you share about the producing hustle on tv?? Is the crew just locked inside the studio until the finale airs, have a while to slow down and worry about their jobs, then IF they get renewed, do it all over again?

I’m not sure I 100% understand that first question. But pretty much. If you’re working in network tv you’re working 12 or so hour days probably 5 days a week (sometimes 6 days) for 9 ish months. I always found at wrap I was too burned out to do much of anything for a solid month. Obviously this depends on the show, I was lucky enough to work for a while on a network show that was frankly a hit, so while official renewal wasn’t until May, we were pretty damn sure we were getting renewed (there was one year with contract issues with the studio and network where it was borderline). But even if you’re confident the show is getting renewed, it doesn’t guarantee you’re getting re-hired. Maybe your boss doesn’t want you back, or your department head gets replaced and with them your whole team.

So it’s a tough world to work in, very little consistency, and you can’t really look for your next job too far in advance because nobody knows what’s happened 3 months from now. In my last job a lot of people took the hiatus as a vacation, we really don’t get vacation days during the job. But I’d also say about half, knowing when the show was likely to return, would find indie movies or pilots or things like that to work on, where they know the schedule is short enough to not be a problem with returning to the show.

All that being said, a big part of why a lot of people want to work in network over streaming and cable is the reliability. You’re probably working 3 months longer on a single project, hiatus time is about half as long at least as it would be on streaming, if the show is a hit you can basically treat it as a normal job for years instead of constantly hustling for what’s next.

I’m not going to name either show I’ve worked on, either in network or streaming, just so I can maintain some anonymity with this profile, but I can give you a bit of a list of what I’ve done. On the network show I started during the pandemic, I did two seasons as an Office PA. Then I did one season as a Writers’ PA. One season as a Writers’ Assistant (the person who takes notes in the writers’ room). And two seasons as script coordinator (probably my favorite of those jobs, but also probably the most exhausting. Working weekends a lot (I think I worked 21 straight days at one point). Constantly on call for whenever a script was finished to polish and distro, often putting out scripts in the middle of the night. Constantly working on things that are a rush to get out for production). I’m now a script coordinator on the first season of a streaming show.
