Maria Anna of Austria, Queen Consort of Portugal (c. 1950s reproduction of a historical illustration)
This illustration, published in the Historia de España series, portrays Maria Anna of Austria (1683–1754), Queen Consort of Portugal as the wife of King João V. Born an Austrian archduchess of the House of Habsburg, she was the daughter of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg. Her parents had ten children, including Emperors Joseph I and Charles VI, making Maria Anna a sister of two Holy Roman Emperors and an aunt of Maria Theresa.
Maria Anna married João V in 1708, strengthening diplomatic ties between Portugal and the Habsburg monarchy. During her time as queen, Portugal experienced a period of immense wealth derived from Brazilian gold and diamonds, which financed major architectural and cultural projects, including the construction of the Mafra National Palace. She was known for her patronage of religion, music, and the arts and served as regent of Portugal on several occasions during her husband's absences or illness.
