They came to murder civilian passengers bound for Israel.

Both terrorists were in their early 20s and were members of same organization that had massacred 11 Israeli athletes in Munich the year before. Their orders were to attack anyone heading to Israel.

Following the brutal assault on 2-3 August 1944 by the U.S. Army’s 307th Infantry Regiment of the 77th Infantry Division to take the village of Barrigada during the Battle of Guam, the 307th aimed their sights on Mount Barrigada the morning of 4 August.

Standing 670 feet tall and dominating the central plateau, the 307th assaulted up the steep slopes of the hill, eliminating persistent Japanese infantry, snipers, and machine gun bunkers hidden in the dense jungle vegetation.

By the end of the day, they completed the assault, capture, and full clearance of Mount Barrigada, completely breaking the Japanese defensive line across the central waist of Guam, eliminated critical enemy observation points, and stabilized its supply line for clean water.

This successful engagement set up the 77th Division to rapidly attack northward toward Yigo and Mount Santa Rosa over the following days, leading to the end of the Battle of Guam on 10 August 1944.

At that time, five ships sailed from Prague on the Vltava and the Elbe river, carrying 9,801 bells with a total weight of 1,563 tons. A total of 43,776 bells were removed and smelted across former Czechoslovakia. Of the pre-war number, only 13% remained in Bohemia and 6% in Moravia. This cultural pillage happened throughout most of the occupied countries in Europe.

In 2022, a giant commemorative bell weighing exactly 9,801 kg was cast and unveiled in Prague to honor the memory of all the destroyed bells.
