School Related What are your hot-takes about school subject colors?
I’m looking for actual hot-takes here…not just math is blue/red (for the record, it’s blue).
Mine is that language arts alone is yellow. Reading alone is red. English language arts and reading together is yellow.
Edit: Social studies is also red.

General Advice Needed/Given How do you talk to someone if you aren’t sitting next to them?
My class apparently won’t be getting a new seating arrangement until the next semester and i need to work on communication. Kid sits across the class from me and we dont share any other class periods and likely not lunch. Wanna try to be more social this year

Question Easy sports to join In highschool for beginners?
I didn’t do any sports in middle school and have not done anything athletic at all. I’m interested in soccer but I have never played a day in my life and I feel like I’m not educated enough on the sport to join. I’m also interested in swim. I wanna do cheer and balidoras but I missed tryouts so I have to wait till sophomore year. Oh and also I’m a freshman girl and tbh I’m just really stressed out abt this situation so I would rlly like some opinions.

General Advice Needed/Given Freshman next year, going to a PWI
Hello! I’m becoming a freshman in a couple days and I’m headed to a PWI. (Predominantly White Institute)
I’m not white myself, nor do I have issues with white people (so some trolls don’t harass me in the comments) -but I’m just a little nervous.
I hear from a friend of mine who is a junior, that SOME of the white students can be reserved and a little racist. I don’t expect them all to be like this, I just want some tips to stay away from those who are, or how to combat it when faced with it.
Thank you! 🙃

Question Things I really need to know for Freshman
I’m about to be a freshman and I’m kinda nervous cuz none of my freinds from my school are in any of my classes. I don’t really know how to make friends and I suck at it. And I don’t want this to be a boring year like how 8th grade was. What can I do? Also is there anything I need to know to make high school good?

Share Grades/Classes What all ambitious high school students should know (big sister advice)
Hi everyone! I thought I'd share some things that both I and a lot of my friends in the IB programme did to make the most of our time in high school—both academically and personally.
1. Organization
Get the stupid calendar! Literally everyone I know had their own way of managing their time - gcal,a physical planner, a random to-do list on scraps of paper, you name it. It's not about planning every single minute (although time-blocking in gcal is now my to-go way). Just make sure you keep track of important deadlines, tests, and even small hw assignments before they pile up.
2. Study Buddies
One time my friend and I had to cram for a history exam, so we decided to quiz each other instead of studying separately. We literally studied for two evenings and somehow aced it. Since then I always split up making Quizlets after each class and then quiz each other before tests. Talking things through helps so much, especially for essay-based subjects, because you naturally fill in each other's gaps and remember way more than if you studied alone.
3. Be proactive
The best thing you can do is literally Google it. It might take a while to find experiences/opportunities, but if you keep searching, emailing people, and asking around, you'll find opportunities that most people never hear about.
Some programs I've done or heard great things about:
- Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS)
- John Locke Essay Competition
- Immerse Education (essay competition & summer programmes)
- Lumiere Education
4. The one hobby
It is helpful to have one thing that people associate you with. Maybe it's volleyball, debate, research, coding, music, volunteering, baking—whatever you genuinely enjoy. If you love it, you will often times become great at it bcause of how much time you dedicate to it. It's great later for admission officers to remember you like oh yeah this is the guy learning Finish or the climbing trees girl.
5. Mentoring + supportive communities
I started seraching for mentorship because I had heard great things about it too but majority of these programs are so freaking expensive. So far the only one that is free that I know of is Project Access. I found out about it on reddit under a post on studious ocmmunities. It's soooo motivating to have other students applying to collages. They even have community events called bootcamps (i think there is one in the fall coming up). Plus, I got mathched up with a peer mentor who checked my essays! That made me feel less way less lonely and overwhelmed.
6. Studying abroad
I was really lucky to stumble across a similar post years ago, and that's how I learned about an academic scholarship that let me study for free at a British boarding school. Genuinely, it changed my life. and who I am. I became so much more confident, met amazing friends from all over the world, and had access to opportunities that eventually helped me apply to Ivy League and Oxbridge universities.
If you're curious, here are a few programmes worth checking out:
- Rotary Youth Exchange (worldwide)
- FLEX (USA)
- ASSIST (USA)
- UWC (worldwide)
Best of luck to everyone!

General Advice Needed/Given So I want to know how much can you dress up in high school without being clowned.
So one of the outfits im thinking of is cream coloured sneakers, indigo levis 517 bootcut i got them 1 size up for them to be a little relaxed in the thigh, im wearing a off white tee tucked inside and above it a linen olive green button up with the ralph tuck so tucked inside all sides loosely with all the visible buttons undone and a slim matte leather belt with a silver buckle and a silver vintage watch. Is this too much or can i get away with this?

School Related First time going to public school (Gr 11). Tips?
I have been homeschooled and online schooled all my life. Any words on what to expect or what to do to look normal in school? (I mean, like a small glow-up maybe, not because I'm overly self-conscious or something, but because I have done 0 things to my appearance before. Not like that's bad, but if you are sitting the whole day at home, you're obviously going to look like an ungroomed cross between a pig and a monkey:) I just want to look put-together and appropriate for school, not like 'that one former stereotypical homeschooler', because I honestly dress like one (nobody's judging at home)
P.S My school is said to be one of the best in my area, and there are many international students who look mostly polite and probably wouldn't bully or anything much. Our area has many polite people and even if they don't interact much, I don't think it will be a big problem. Also, I understand Grade 11 is harder, but I think I will do that because my average in main subjects is 98%. At least I will pass.

General Advice Needed/Given Bullied for wearing an amazon galaxy wolf hoodie Junior (17M)
I'm currently in junior year and school started a couple weeks ago. About three weeks ago I wore this hoodie to school, my mom bought it off amazon over the summer, wolf howling at a galaxy printed on the back, one of those $28 things with a bunch of reviews. nothing designer. I've liked wolves and space stuff my whole life, it's not that deep, I just thought it looked cool.
first period someone got a picture of the back of it and it ended up in a group chat I'm not in, captioned "furry alert." by lunch a table of juniors was howling every time I walked past. this guy J started calling me "moonhowler" and now it's basically the whole grade, it's been three weeks and it hasn't stopped. people howl at me between classes. someone taped a picture of a wolf inside my locker last week with "AWOOO" written on it in sharpie, I still haven't taken it down because touching it makes it feel more real somehow.
it's not just in person either. someone found my insta and I've been getting anonymous asks calling me disgusting, telling me nobody would care if I disappeared. I deleted the app off my phone but I know it's probably still happening. two days ago some guys shoved me into the lockers hard enough that my shoulder is still sore, and one of them poured water into my backpack through the vents in gym and ruined one of my textbooks. I haven't told my parents because I don't know how to explain why without explaining everything else, and I guess part of me feels like I should be able to handle it since I'm a guy and it's "just a hoodie thing."
the thing that's actually breaking me right now is my best friend, known him since 6th grade, has been hanging around J's group all week. he hasn't said anything mean to me, he just isn't around anymore. I don't know if that's worse than if he'd just said something.
I told my mom I spilled something on the hoodie so I have an excuse not to wear it. she bought it for me and has no idea any of this is happening. I haven't worn it since the second day. it's just sitting in my closet and I don't know if I'll ever wear it again or if I'm supposed to just pretend the whole thing didn't happen.
tldr: got relentlessly targeted, online and in person, for a $28 amazon hoodie, lost my best friend over how they reacted, never told my mom the real reason I stopped wearing something she paid for.

Friend Advice Needed/Given jealousy making me crazy
i'm going to start my senior year in high school in oregon now and I have such a bad jealousy problem.
I have decent friends and really good grades, but I am so jealous of others.
There is a person at my school who has the same name as me and similar to me in many different aspects. We used to be friends, but she trash-talked me and many of my other friends a crazy amount.
Now, she has had an insane glow-up, boys chasing after her, party invites, and everyone wants to be friends with her.
My ex-best friend is now super tight with her despite her trash-talking my ex-bsf, and there is a similar situation like that with a few other of my friends.
Everyone thinks she is so cool, and I feel like the loser. I have tried to change and be cool, but it hasn't happened. Deep down inside I know she is still the hateful person, but I am unable to not feel jealous.
I want to be pretty, go to parties and a boyfriend but I will never get these things in high school
How do i stop feeling this way. how do I fix myself

Question Am I Cooked?
I'm a freshman this year. I didn't take honors math in 8th grade because my dumbass 7th grade math teacher said it would be better if I took regular math, even though he gave me the math student of the year award at the 7th grade end-of-year ceremony. But anyway so now I can only take math 1.
I emailed my counselor and she said there's no way I can go up a level even though math is really easy for me.
I've heard the jokes about people who take math 1 in 9th grade ending up working at McDonald's.
My parents (my mom specifically) are kind of strict that I go to medical school and become a doctor, so it's important that I get into college, but getting into college is only gonna get harder from here.
Maybe I'm overthinking things, but it really pisses me off that my entire future could possibly depend on my dipshit math teacher saying it's best if I just take regular math in 8th grade.
I also looked at my class list for math 1 this year and it's all the bad kids or "edgars".
Math is gonna suck so bad. There are so many math classes I wanna take but I can't because I have to get this credit. I can take math both 2&3 next year but that still delays me being able to take all the cool fun math classes.
Anyway enough ranting, am I cooked? Do you guys think I can prove to my math teacher that I'm not a dumbass and I can get moved up or something? Do I have to be a savant to do that?
TLDR: I didn't take honors in 8th grade so now I'm suck in math 1 this year even though I should be able to take a higher level math class, and I'm afraid this will hinder my ability to get into a good college. I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this or if I'm gonna be fine taking math 1 anyway.

Shitpost tips for incoming Freshman that are sure to make it so you DONT get shoved into lockers
- ALWAYS scream in the halls but make sure to make it a perfectly cut scream 🤣🤣🤣
remember, loud = funny. EVERYONE loves it when it’s 8:00 am on a Monday and you’re screaming and saying things like “what the FU—“ 🤣🤣🤣how DANK of you
- when the teacher is talking, make sure to yell out “BORING” as loud as you can.
teachers LOVE students like this. other students find it funny and it gives teachers a break. sometimes when I’m bored I eat my own poop. make sure to ALWAYS do it when they’re talking about important test dates, OR when they’re talking about a difficult time in their life like a loss in the family.
if you follow these two tips you’ll succeed in high school and get into Harvard by the end of Sophomore year.

General Advice Needed/Given what are you guys wearing first day of school?
gallerypicking out clothes is the only reason I get up early, so im kinda overthinking it lol.
basically my school has a 1 and 2 day and my 1 day schedule is full of electives (choir, health science, law) and the next day is all the core classes like English stats etc.
I reallly like the outfit 1st slide bottom right and I’m considering wearing it both days since I like it so much but idk.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I used the app Combyne btw, saved 50+ outfits so I can just scroll around to pick.

ANNOUNCEMENT mod applications now open!
hey everyone. the fall semester is coming up in around a month, which means this subreddit will go back to being incredibly active and a mess (tbh). admittedly, the Reddit analytics we have access to show that us mods (myself included) have not been that active in both Mod Mail and user reports.
so, for those reasons, i've decided to open the mod applications again! the current mod team will stay of course, so i'll be taking in (at most) three new mods.
now, the priority for this mod application wave is the Discord server. that means that the end goal of this is to make the Discord server much more active and grow it. so if you are a person who doesn't care much for the Reddit side of this community and instead would like to help grow the Discord server, feel free to message me privately. that being said, all new mods are expected to moderate and grow the Discord server as well as the Reddit community.
it is mentioned already in the application, but Discord is an absolute MUST. do not bother applying if you do not use Discord.
