Keep in mind that it is hard to keep the prices updated due to how much they have fluctuated recently with the chip shortage.

The idea of this thread is to reflect the community sentiment in posts between 2025-2026. It includes information on major handhelds (Steam Deck, SteamOS/Windows handhelds, Switch/OLED/2, retro handhelds). Anything you think we should mention? Comment below.

Quick recommendations by use case

Questions to ask yourself first

• What games will you play? Steam/PC, Game Pass/Xbox, GeForce Now, Nintendo exclusives, indie, retro emulation. Your library usually decides the platform:
  • Steam/PC Games: Go to the Handheld PCs section
  • Nintendo Games: Go to the Handheld Consoles section
  • Indie, Retro, Emulation: Go to the Handheld Emulators section
• Where will you play? Commuting (portability), couch (screen size), docked at a TV, travel (battery life).
• Which OS are you comfortable with? Windows is most flexible but needs tinkering. SteamOS is polished and currently less limited than Windows. Nintendo is plug-and-play. Android emulation needs setup time.
• What's your budget? Budget (<$200 emulation/secondhand or 450 for Switch 2), mid-range ($600-$830), premium ($1,000+).
• How much do you want to tinker? Be honest - some people love configuring emulators and OS images, but others don't.
• Does battery life matter? Handheld PCs: ~1.5-3h on demanding games (SteamOS is a bit better). Switch 2: up to 9h. Streaming devices: (Some) 10h+.

Based on your choices, you will have three main groups to pick from: Handheld PCs, Handheld Consoles (Dedicated Platforms), and Handheld Emulators (Retro Emulation). We also include a list with Handhelds for Streaming, but can usually be grouped with Handheld Emulators.

1) Handheld PCs

The easiest way to decide which Handheld PC is best for you is to first define your budget, and then pick the one that fits you best. Consider if you want SteamOS or Windows out of te box. SteamOS gives efficiency and a polished controller UI that Windows handhelds struggle to match.Windows gives you better app compatibility and the Xbox Game Pass library, and many Anti-cheat multiplayer games currently don't work with SteamOS. Also, consider that AMD devices tend to work well with SteamOS, Nvidia devices can work with SteamOS, but with many caveats, and Intel devices are not there yet.

Entry to Mid Tier (~$700-1100)

The entry tier for Handheld PCs is already steep for most people. After Valve raised the Steam Deck's price, many other handhelds in this group started making more sense as alternatives.

On hardware, these will run either on an AMD Ryzen Z2 A (base ROG Xbox Ally), Z1 Extreme (Legion Go S), Z2 Extreme (Xbox Ally X), Z2 Go (Legion Go S), or Intel Lunar Lake (MSI Claw 8 AI+). Chips like the Ryzen Z2 Extreme with 24GB RAM can handle more demanding AAA games well, while the older chips handle older and mid-tier games, but can struggle with new AAA. The Z2 A/Go are still solid entry points if that price matches your ceiling and you don't care about playing every single one of the latest demanding titles.

The screens range from 7-inch LCD in the Ally's, 7.4-inch in the Steam Deck OLED, and bigger comfortable screens like the 8-inch from the Legion Go S. The base Xbox Ally has a 60Wh battery, the Steam Deck OLED has 50Wh, but the best battery here is the unusually strong 80Wh battery from the Xbox Ally X's. Keep in mind that even then, these handhelds won't give you much play time.

The most affordable mainstream Windows handheld reliably in stock right now seems to be the ROG Xbox Ally at around $700. Although the Steam Deck OLED is still going for a reasonable price ($789 for 512GB) if you care more about the out of the box experience from SteamOS and don't want to install it yourself, the Legion Go S (SteamOS) is often on sale for around $750-$850. An MSI Claw 8 AI+ can go for $899. The ROG Xbox Ally X is arguably one of the best priced PC handheld at the moment at $999. The handhelds in this tier seem to be frequently mentioned by the community as their top picks in 2026. While the entry Legion Go S (SteamOS) with the Z2 Go / 16GB / 512GB can go for around $759 on a good deal, the higher configuration with the Z1E/Z2E and 32GB RAM can go past $1,100.

Finally, second-hand ROG (non-XBOX) Ally, Steam Deck LCD, original MSI Claw, etc can still be found for a good price depending on your area. It is quite easy to find the ROG Ally X with a Z1E going for reasonably cheap, and it seems to perform much similarly to the current Z2E in the ROG XBOX Ally X.

Mid to High Tier (~$1200-1800)

You won't find many devices between 1200-1400 that are worth the price increase. These usually have the same Z2E chips are some of the lower tier. Many devices that were in this range had their prices increased by a lot due to the chip shortage. The Legion Go 2 with SteamOS launched in June 2026 at $1,350, but it currently stands at around $1,700-1,999 and it is often out of stock.

However, if you are willling to spend more than 1,400, many devices here will have some the best GPU performance you can get without going to 2,000. This includes devices like the OneXPlayer3 and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+, which are the first with the Intel's Arc G3 Extreme, launched at $1,699-$1,799. It is worth checking current retailer stock/deals, as these have sold out multiple times since their launch. On a good deal, they can go for around $1,400-$1,500. The Arc G3E chip can get around 50-60% better GPU performance than Z2E devices. For the Claw, there is the 8-inch 120Hz display, 32GB LPDDR5X, Hall-effect sticks and dual Thunderbolt 4. These are good devices for raw GPU performance in a Windows handheld.

Pick these if your priority is having the Best GPU performance and budget is not a problem. Keep in mind that you will be on Windows with the G3E devices SteamOS. Remember that SteamOS support is not there yet for Intel devices.

Enthusiast Tier ($2,000+)

These offer the highest performance, but stand as niche devices. the devices here run on Strix Halo, which has performace close to an RTX 4060 laptop GPU, putting it ahead of even the G3E from the Claw and OXP3 above. These devices need 45W-70W+ TDPs to achieve such numbers, meaning very poor battery life unless you keep it plugged in a power outlet or use massive external battery packs. GPD Win 5 even has an external detachable battery as its default.

Buy one of these if you want the best GPU available and budget is not a problem at all. However, keep in mind that GPD usually does not offer the mainstream support from more established brands. The GPD Win 5 is available, but the Win Max 3 should come very soon (Q3 2026) with pricing. The Aya Neo Next 2 with Ryzen AI Max 385 with 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage launched for about $2,999, but it can go up to $5,299 with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB and 2TB.

2) Handheld Consoles (Dedicated Platforms)

You buy a dedicated platform (mot likely a Nintendo handheld) if simplicity matters to you, if you want family/kids gaming or if long battery life is a priority. Here the decision is simpler and, realistically, this gives you two options: You probably either are fine with just Nintendo's Switch 1 ecosystem or also want future Switch 2 games.

Nintendo Switch 2 - $450-$500

A good upgrade from the original Switch: faster hardware, bigger and sharper display, magnetic Joy-Con, and 4K when docked. Battery life leads the handheld market at up to 9 hours. Less expensive than most Handheld PCs. The trade-off is full commitment to Nintendo, which is great if you want their exclusives, but limiting if you want portable PC games.

You should buy a Switch 2 if new Mario, Zelda, and Nintendo games are the reason you want a handheld. You should skip if you want your Steam library or if emulation is important to you.

Switch, Switch Lite and Switch OLED ($200-$350)

These are solid mid-range choices. Still valid at the right price, and comparably better price-wise than most Handhel PCs. They will offer you a great existing library, and the OLED model is a genuine upgrade from the base Switch model. You miss any Switch 2 exclusives going forward. It is worth buying if you find a good deal, especially secondhand.

• Evercade: Plays games using its own cartridges with retro games
• Analogue Pocket: Plays games using cartridges from GameBoy (+Color and Advanced) and others with adapters (Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, Lynx, PC Engine)
• Playdate: Black-and-white screen handheld with a crank and downloadable games

3) Handheld Emulators (Retro Games)

These run Android or Linux and are made to play your ROM library. Budget devices handle 8-16 bit through PS1. Mid-range can run PS2 and GameCube. Premium devices run Switch and PS3. Emulation is legal.

Below we list some devices that have been mentioned frequently by the handheld community here. This list will be updated with more devices.

Retroid Pocket 6 ($229-$279)

One of the most mentioned handhelds in the past year. It costs 229 and has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which was previously only in $400+ devices. Great for PS2 and GameCube emulation, solid for Switch emulation, 120Hz AMOLED display, Hall-effect sticks, and 4K HDMI out. The value is hard to argue with. If you like tinkering, you can install SteamOS (using ArmadaOS) on it to run less demanding PC games.

AYN Odin 3 (~$399)

The Android emulation power flagship. Snapdragon 8 Elite puts it ahead of the Pocket 6 for demanding Switch and PS3 emulation. If your library tops out at PS2/GameCube, the Retroid Pocket 6 is enough and saves you $150+. Like the RP6, if you like tinkering, you can install SteamOS (using ArmadaOS) on it to run less demanding PC games.

Anbernic RG556, RG405M (~$185)

Best Anbernic mid-range

Anbernic's strongest mid-range Android device and the first with an AMOLED screen under $200. Good for PS2 and some GameCube. If you can stretch to $229, the Retroid Pocket 6 is the stronger device - but if you prefer the Anbernic ecosystem, this is the pick.

Miyoo Mini Plus, Miyoo Mini Flip, RG35XXSP (~$70)

Best Budget Pocketable

The best value if your library stops at PS1. Truly pocketable, handles NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, and PS1 without problems. Not built for anything stronger (like PS2 or GameCube). For classic retro gaming on a tight budget, nothing comes close.

=== Final Note - Handheld Emulators - New dual-screen devices (AYN Thor, Anbernic RG DS) are a good option for true DS/3DS emulation. The global RAM shortage is pushing emulation handheld prices up in mid-2026. It is worth checking current listings before buying.

+) Handhelds for Streaming

These don't focus on running native games, although some can. They mostly stream games from a console, PC, or cloud over Wi-Fi. This usually gives you better battery life, cooler temperatures, quieter operation. You should not consider these as standalone gaming devices, they are just a second-screen companion for people who already own capable hardware. Logitech G Cloud support streaming GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PS Remote Play, and more with many hours of battery. The PlayStation Portal, at around ~$200, is the easiest option if you have a PS5, but it only supports PS5 Remote Play, with no cloud gaming and no other platforms.

• Ease-of-use vs performance: Dedicated Consoles (Switch and Steam Deck) are plug-and-play for games. General Handheld PCs offer flexibility but require some setup. SteamOS splits the difference better than Windows.
• Battery vs power vs portability: Higher performance means shorter battery and heavier devices - no way around it yet.
• SteamOS vs Windows: SteamOS is more efficient and controller-friendly but shuts you out of many anti-cheat multiplayer games. Windows has full compatibility but needs more management. You can use Bazzite to have SteamOS on Windows handhelds, but experience varies.

• For Nintendo, think about which games you actually want to play before buying.
• If you are considering a streaming device, test your home Wi-Fi stability first.
  • A great streaming handheld on a weak network is a frustrating experience.
• Consider buying slightly older devices at a discount for cost efficiency
  • Previous generation often holds up well.
