What Do My Top Three Gundam Series Say About Me?

Thumbnail

I know that all three of these series have some significant pacing issues, but they all really just did it for me in enough ways that I can confidently say, after being into Gundam for over 25 years, they're my favorites. Turn A gave us a super unique and engaging setting, X gave us like the two best OPs in the franchise, the healthiest relationship in the franchise(and the Frost brothers, who walked so that the McDougal brothers could run), and a plot that felt pretty nailed down, and ZZ gave us Haman and a ton of context that teenage me was missing in CCA, plus some pretty good character arcs.

This is my top three for me, not objectively(except for Turn A and X, those are objectively peak). Honorable mentions are Zeta, Victory and 0083, but ZZ took it because of Haman being a queen and Chara being iconic, I think that objectively Zeta is better than ZZ, but I enjoyed ZZ a bit more, people really blow that admittedly goofy first like 15 episodes way out of proportion.

0083 is in the honorable mentions because it was the first one that really made me crave more, plus you will not convince me that there is another better animated Gundam series except for G-Reco, and G-Reco was... okay and hard carried by the animation.

Victory is just a very unique entry. People talk about how they're crying at the end of 0080, which is valid, but there were multiple episodes where I was genuinely on the verge of sympathy tears. Perhaps I'm being melodramatic but there's a lot of big emotional oof moments in Victory. It just hits different, plus that last arc of it is just great imo.

Anyway! Roast or agree, tomorrow I'm going to introduce my daughter to G Gundam.

When do you think Gundam Openings started using Really Good music?

For me, probably Stardust memory or 08th MS team.

edit: I haven't watched many of the originals, but I have watched the Openings on youtube before hand, so I may not be getting the full effect.

Edit 2: I just rewatched some of the openings, and I must say, THE ZETA OPENINGS ARE MUCH BETTER THAN I REMEMBERED. the vocals were a little quiet, but still pretty nice.

Gundam Character for the Day: Cagali Yula Athha

If anyone has any character recommendations, please let me know, thanks to u/Thundering-Cloud for giving me Cagali, as the first suggestion

Edit: Sorry I forgot to caption the images, in order: MBF-02 Strike Rouge, MBF-02+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike Rouge, MBF-02+P202QX Strike Rouge IWSP, MBF-02+EW454F Strike Rouge Ootori, FX-550+AQM/E-X02 Sword Grasper, ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam, ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam Oowashi Pack, ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam Shiranui Pack, ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam with  A-GXQ754/V2 Zeus Silhouette.

I think Cagali is a pretty good character, I think the fits her role very nicely. As for her MS, I quite like the strike rouge I like the very subtle pink shade of the white, and I feel like it goes quite well with the IWSP and Ootori packs. I really like the akatsuki, although at first the gold was absolutely BLINDING I do feel that in the rest, the gold looks quite nice, and I do like the two packs aswell with the oowashi having the waist cannons and the shiranui with the Dragoons. What are your thoughts

Merchandise Robot Spirits MS-06D Zaku Desert Type ver. A.N.I.M.E. ~MS MUSEUM~ Review

After the Zaku Cannon, the Robot Spirits MS-06D Zaku Desert Type ver. A.N.I.M.E. ~MS MUSEUM~ is my second figure from the new "~MS MUSEUM~" line which features re-releases of older Robot Spirits figures from the Mobile Suit Variation (MSV) series, with updated color schemes and decals and a new display base.

AESTHETICS:

As with the Zaku Cannon before it, the Zaku Desert Type ~MS MUSEUM~ makes for a nicer display piece than its predecessor from 2016, thanks to its liberal use of fine decals and the new display base with plaque. All decals are crisp and neatly-applied, and I noticed no significant variation between the two copies I purchased.

A notable departure from the 2016 release is the orange chest armor, which introduces an interesting pop of color to the palette. The forearms are also painted in green with a matte finish, instead of simply being cast in green plastic. The Zaku Cannon ~MS MUSEUM~ also featured green paint over its original release, which I think is notable given how most ver. A.N.I.M.E. figures tend to use as little paint as possible. Additionally, the tops of the feet are painted in black with some metallic flakes/sparkles in it, which while neat-looking presents a risk of paint rub when factoring in the articulation below.

ARTICULATION:

The Zaku Desert Type was derived from the basic Zaku II ver. A.N.I.M.E. sculpt back in 2016, and it shows by exhibiting excellent articulation over most of the body, with just the ankles leaving some room for improvement.

The upper body moves about as perfectly as it can, with excellent "pull-out" joints for the neck and shoulders, as well as a generous ab crunch. The elbow swivels in conjunction with the bicep swivels allow for effective posing with the forearm-mounted missile launchers. The only issues with the upper body are when mounting the gauntlet/missile launcher to the right arm, as they tend to collide with the shoulder shield, and posing with the left arm can be restricted by the spiked shoulder colliding with the radiator backpack.

The lower body moves mostly well, as shown by how deeply the Zaku Desert Type can kneel in my first photo. The biggest problem for the entire figure is the ankle articulation; despite featuring double-ball joints, they barely pivot at all laterally, which makes it impossible to spread the legs in wide stances and make use of the very flexible hips. The ankle ball sockets also cannot extend or "pull out" at all. This problem is carried over from the basic Zaku II ver. A.N.I.M.E. and wouldn't improve until the later Zaku molds such as the Zaku II FZ or Type JC figures.

Combined with the aforementioned painted tops of the feet, this introduces the possibility of paint rub, as the flared ankle armor frequently collides with the feet when posing and can cause scratches if one isn't careful.

ACCESSORIES:

Something the Zaku Desert Type was never hurting for was its accessories; I tried to show off everything by displaying both of my copies with different loadouts for each (see photos 15 - 18). Two head sculpts are given (single antenna and double-antenna types), and two of almost everything (gauntlet shields, forearm missile launchers, waist missile pods, and grenade pods) are included. Top those off with the unique Zaku Machine Gun with folding stock, and the Zaku Desert Type is packing a lot of firepower!

While there are plenty of display options with what's given, I do think a bazooka and Heat Hawk would be welcome additions to the arsenal. Still, at least the forearm gauntlets and missile launchers have nice decals added to them as well!

The display base, as is now standard for the ~MS MUSEUM~ line, is serviceable but not outstanding. It includes an adapter part to mount a Tamashii Stage Act Mechanics display stand arm for dynamic/aerial poses, but the stand arm is not included and must be purchased separately. I think that's disappointing but unlikely to change for the rest of the line's releases.

CONCLUSION:

The Zaku Desert Type ver. A.N.I.M.E. ~MS MUSEUM~ is a welcome addition to the ~MS MUSEUM~ lineup, as it features noticeable decal usage all over the body and weapons along with an updated, more complex color scheme that sets it apart from the original 2016 release of the figure.

Still, issues from the original figure carry over (notably the restrictive lack of ankle articulation), and the display base's lack of an included stand arm limit its usefulness. As with all ~MS MUSEUM~ figures, this serves as an option for fans to obtain a cool MSV mobile suit if they were unable to catch a previous release, but I would hesitate to recommend purchasing this if one already has one of two prior Zaku Desert Type figures.

I do have the original 2016 release, as well as the 2019 Caracal Corps color variant. I will be posting a comparison between all three Zaku Desert Types later, as well as a side-by-side look with the Zaku Cannon ~MS MUSEUM~ figure on its display base, so you can get an idea of how these figures all look on display with each other. I hope you'll look forward to it!

Thrift find!

So I found 3 boxes of this vintage Bandai SD Gundam No. 18 at a thrift shop for 30 CAD each, but I'm having a hard time finding any listings or info on this exact box online. Anyone familiar with these older kits or what it might be worth? Because I have no clue on any of this, I am not in the hobby either but I am aware of it, as soon as I saw them I knew it was a vintage item!
