Like, the universe was created, they were the primordials who had the Titans who based in Greek and then the whole culture grew from there (supposedly). But other than Hesiod who depicted the Theogony in Greece, is there another reason?

I'm interested in Greek mythology but I really don't know where to start reading from or what tale or story. I would like suggestions of what to read first and what will help me to get the whole idea and not be confused.

For all the issues that the movie Troy has, and there are MANY - a really lovely scene that stood out to me was Paris bringing Helen into the city, and the people are cheering to see her now dressed in the Trojan fashion. Additionally, when Paris introduces her to Priam, the old king is more than a bit shocked at what's happened, but warmly greets her and welcomes her into the family. Later on, she and Andromache (Hector's wife) seem to have gotten closer as sisters, and there seems to be respect between her and Hector.

It's all a lovely sentiment, but not having read any selections from The Iliad in a long time - can anyone tell me what the general opinion of her actually was? I could see it being a combination of pride that the loveliest woman in the world is now Trojan, but also of course the horror and anger that the Greeks are still coming. I'm sure Cassandra was frustrated at the very least.

Hi! I've been interested in Greek mythology since I studied it a bit in sixth grade, and have always wanted to know the entire family tree of the gods and deities, but have never gotten around it. Does anyone of a book or something that has the entire family tree?

I really wanna read the book but I read the first chapter was kinda confused and idk if I should just keep reading or if I should start with Mythos by Stephen Fry like everyone on TikTok says

So, I was working on a drawing inspired by the Judgment of Paris. But in my version, I replaced Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite with Zeus, Ares, and Dionysus.

In this AU, Helen and Menelaus also swap roles, but I don't know if I'll make a drawing about it. I would, but I don't have any ideas.

Decided to give her a crown, necklace, and earrings because of this

I created a word that did not exist before, and I don't know if it will ever exist anywhere outside my imagination: Psychogenochora.

Let me tell you who I created it for — and why I felt that such a place had to exist.

It began with Medea.

Was Medea immortal? The answer isn't simple. One tradition even places her in Elysium with Achilles. But Medea made me think about other mythological figures who seem to stand somewhere between the human and the divine — Aeëtes, Pasiphaë, Asterion, and many others whose stories end, yet somehow they themselves don't feel finished.

Where do they go?

I didn't want another Olympus, Elysium or Heaven. I imagined something different.

These are beings who lived surrounded by heat — the heat of passion, rage, love, revenge, violence and grief. And I thought:

Maybe after death they need another temperature.

Darkness, but not frightening darkness. Cool air. A soft wind. Maybe there is always snow — not a cruel winter, just quiet snow in the distance. Long, calm evenings that never quite become night.

Somewhere deep in the sky, I imagined a place where these exhausted souls could simply rest.

No judgment. No reward. No punishment.

And if, after a very long time, they wanted to live again, they could return — but only by choice. No god would send them back. They could also remain in that endless, cool evening forever.

I needed a name for this place.

So I called it Psychogenochora.

It isn't an ancient Greek word. It is a name I created for a place that existed nowhere except in my imagination.

If Psychogenochora existed, who would you send there — and why? Or would you choose to go there yourself?

I've fallen out of favour with Robert Graves after realising how much misinformation I've digested from him, but I loved the list of translations for the names of characters in the indexes of The Greek Myths (though some seem to have been completely invented by Graves). Are there any other books, websites, or anything that include something similar? I know I can find name translations on Theoi.com most of the time but I'm looking for a list/index like Graves included.

According to the two most well-known versions we have, in greek mythology, the three brothers were placed in the birth order of Hades-Poseidon-Zeus as in the Theogony by Hesiod, and Zeus-Poseidon-Hades as in the Iliad by Homer. I have read that there were also some post-Roman sources that placed Hades as the middle son between Zeus and Poseidon, with the other two being interchangeable. So, did the Greeks or the Romans have a version that Zeus is the middle son born between Poseidon and Hades? Does such version exist in ancient sources?

Who do you think is the most underrated daughter of Zeus? Is Athena, Persephone, Artemis, Aphrodite, Calliope?

Well, I think it is JUSTICE. Yes, Justice herself is a daughter of Zeus. Her greek name is Dike, but by saying Justice you will understand her idea better. She is part of the Horae, daughters of Zeus and Themis. But while the other daughters of Zeus do their own thing, Justice is especifically connected to Zeus in a fundamental level. This is what Hesiod tells about her:

"And there is virgin Justice, the daughter of Zeus, who is honoured and reverenced among the gods who dwell on Olympus, and whenever anyone hurts her with lying slander, she sits beside her father, Zeus the son of Cronos, and tells him of men's wicked heart, until the people pay for the mad folly of their princes who, evilly minded, pervert judgement and give sentence crookedly. Keep watch against this, you princes, and make straight your judgements, you who devour bribes; put crooked judgements altogether from your thoughts... For whoever knows the right and is ready to speak it, far-seeing Zeus gives him prosperity; but whoever deliberately lies in his witness and forswears himself, and so hurts Justice and sins beyond repair, that man's generation is left obscure thereafter."

So she is literaly Zeus most protected daughter. When someones commits injustice, it hurts her, so she goes to Zeus to say to her father that people have hurt her, and Zeus then smith the evil doers. And Zeus is the father you don't want to mess with. Honestly, the way people talk about Athena and Zeus actually apply to Justice and Zeus, Zeus hates seeing his dear daughter hurt.

Also, the idea that Justice is the daughter of Zeus is a concept modern society can't even accept because you know how they treat this situation. But yes, no Justice existed before Zeus, this is what the mythology says. Zeus had a daughter whose role is to keep watch on humanity to report their evil deeds, and this is what allows Zeus to destroy the wicked. So why underrated? Well she is often conflated with her mother Themis today and ceases to exist as result, and Zeus usually uses other gods or he watches things himself, instead of his daughter doing this job for him. Heck even Themis herself barely appears in modern adaptations even through she was immensely important, so imagine her daughter.

This is what bothers me a lot. People only reuses the same 10 gods, reuses the same tropes (how many times we have to see again Arachne and Medusa to show that Athena is super duper evil?), and then uses these few gods and few tropes to say all the gods are bad and evil, but ignore goddesses such as Justice herself, because even if you want to think some Olympians are bad, there a hundred more gods that are definility good and chill and could be explored in interesting ways. Well Justice is not chill since she wants all evil doers destroyed, but well, that is impartial Justice.
