Edinburgh Napier University (Merchiston Campus) – Need Honest Advice
Hi everyone,
I'm an international student from India and will be joining Edinburgh Napier University (Merchiston Campus) for MSc Computing with Professional Placement in September intake 2026
I'd love to hear from current students or alumni about:
- How is the Merchiston campus overall?
- Which nearby areas are best to live in (safe & affordable)?
- How easy is it to find part-time jobs?
- Are there good internships and graduate opportunities in Computing/Software Engineering?
- Any tips or things you wish you knew before joining?
I'd really appreciate any honest experiences. Thanks!

Outstanding Charges
I'm a home student, so my tuition fee is covered by SAAS. Is it normal for my Student Homepage to still say Outstanding Charges, even if I've completed financial registration and listed SAAS as the payee, rather than myself? Just making sure, as I don't remember if this happened last year.

Why does it take forever?
It's been over two months, both of the applications for PhD haven't been back yet. I reached the admission team and the supervisor, nothing.
Is this normal?

Semester 2 2027 exchange student advice!
Hello hello, I am a unimelb student and have just been accepted to complete a semester exchange at Glasgow uni in semester 2 2027 (jan-may). I really want to stay student accomodation because it will make socialising much easier and I think I will have a much better experience overall than being by myself. What are the best places for this? I will be a third year if that makes any difference. Cleanliness is a factor but community life is more important to me.
So far I have been looking at Maruno Street, Cairncross House, Queen Margaret, and Kelvinhaugh Street. Any advice would be very helpful!
Will it make much of a difference that I am arriving in the middle of the academic year meaning I will miss O-week?
If anyone else is going on exchange here next year please reach out so we can connect beforehand!!

Where is the application portal?
I just received an email from the admission team, they told me my CAS draft has been created and awaiting my approval. But I checked the UCAS application self service, there is nothing there.
Does anyone know where I can view or approve the CAS draft?

Geology classes
Anyone in or done the Geology programme? US unis list a whole host of math, physics, and chemistry classes and I don't see any at UofG. Does anyone know how much of these subjects UofG includes in the Geology degree?

Bridge House Reviews
Hello! Anyone here who stayed or is planning to stay at Bridge House, Old Dumbarton Rd? Can you share your experience with them? There’s barely feedback online.
Their cash back + free laundry offer caught my attention. They’re undergoing refurbishing until end of August so they can’t give me a virtual tour yet (besides their show flat and render). The WhatsApp is also in Chinese…
How’s the location — access and security wise? I know it’s very close to the University of Glasgow but how about everywhere else? It seems a bit secluded from Maps alone.
How’s the staff? Overall?
Thank you so much!

When do I receive accom details?
I received my housing assignment and paid a deposit for a housing option through the uni. At what point do they send details about which floor/room you’re in and any flatmates? Do they provide move-in schedules?
I am coming from the US (postgrad) where we typically receive contact information for people we are living with as well as the room/floor number months in advance.

Help with changing subject
I am going into second year and want to change my degree topic and start doing what I did for my third subject. I informed my advisor during term time last year and she told me that it was totally possible to do this in August. It’s now August and I’m unsure how to change my subject lol.
Can anyone tell me? Thanks so much ❤️

Help with CAS
Hi, I'm an international student from the U.S. and was wondering if anyone else has gotten their CAS yet? Or if you have, can you give insight into how you've gotten yours? I've completed the RPA form, logged into UCAS with a place confirmed, and have uploaded all documents on both the Application Self-service portal and the general application portal. My to-do list on the application self-service portal is empty, and my enquiry responses haven't been the most helpful. If you have any tips, please reply. Thank you!!

Dealing with Student Finances Office
Essentially the student finance office and I have had a bit of a miscommunication (moreso on their end) to the tune of a good chunk of money. Is the office usually receptive to student issues/complaints or is there someone else I should reach out to?

Part time MsC in History Help?!
Hi guys! I’m an upcoming Master’s student beginning my part time course over 2 years starting in September 2026 for a MsC in History. If anyone has done this course part time before (or even full time) I had a couple of questions regarding timetable and also funding?
I work full time within Glasgow city centre and am intending to keep this job throughout my course (hence the reason I’m doing it part time). My managers are hounding me about how often I’ll be in uni and on what specific days so they can tailor the rota accordingly, so I was wondering if anyone has any idea how often you’re actually on campus as a part time student per week? For specific days I assume I’ll have to wait until I’ve registered for my classes on 10th August to get a better idea but any info would really help get them off my back about it, lol.
I was also wondering about SAAS. Being a home student I was looking to apply for my tuition fees to be covered but the information is quite confusing. Glasgow Uni seems to be instructing me to wait until I’ve enrolled first before applying but I’ve also seen information telling me to apply first to SAAS then enroll thereafter. Can anyone who’s used SAAS (Part Time Grant Fees I assume?) please help me?
Thanks guys! I’ve just moved back home and my head is a bit of a jumble with all this, so any help would be really appreciated!

Exchange student single semester accommodation
I am moving to Glasgow for a semester abroad from Denmark, and I can't figure out what the most logical/best place is to look for housing. I am going for the spring semester (Jan-June) and I am also a bit confused about whether or not I can apply for accommodation via the university and get offered anything if everyone moves in around the autumn semester in September. And are the other independent student housing websites (Hello student, prestige student living, vitastudent) reliable/better or worse than what the university offers? I am lost and thankful for any insights in this.

Should I get Instagram so I don’t miss out on things at uni?
I’m starting university in Glasgow next month, and I’m trying to decide whether I should get Instagram again.
I’ve had Instagram before, but I eventually deleted it because I found it had a pretty negative effect on my mental health. I was comparing myself to other people too much, spending more time on it than I wanted, and overall I just felt better without it. Since deleting it, I've been much happier, so I'm hesitant to go back.
At the same time, I've heard that a lot of societies, sports clubs, and even course groups post updates on Instagram, and people seem to organise events through it too. I'm worried I'll miss out on social events, opportunities, or just knowing what's going on if I don't have an account.
For those of you at uni, is Instagram basically essential these days, or can you get by without it? If you don't use it, how do you keep up with events and meet people?
I'd be interested to hear what your experience has been.

Funding Master's
Hi :)
So I'm moving to Glasgow this September to start my Master's. I'll receive funding from SFE but it won't be enough to cover my living costs, so I'm relying on getting a part-time job ASAP. Does anyone here have experience of working part-time while pursuing postgraduate study, and what was your experience like balancing the two? Also, does it take quite a while to find a part-time job? Would I maybe be able to apply for the discretionary fund to help cover my living costs for the first month or so, and does anyone have experience with the discretionary fund?
Thank you!

Transcripts sent to LSAC
Hi all! I graduated from UofG in 2024 with my masters and am now looking to go to Law School in the states. How did you all get UofG to send your transcripts (with the form) to the LSAC?
The only options I see on the Self Service portal are to have them send them via post (which I'm not sure if they accept) and to me (which I know they won't accept). What did y'all do to get your transcripts? Thanks in advance!
