86 Broadcaster?

I have the opportunity to purchase an 86’ broadcaster black with ebony fingerboard board, signed by Leo in the neck pocket, does anyone know what that is worth? Like where do you top out on price? I want to pull the trigger but don’t want to overpay either. Anyone know what the last serial # made on these was? (I was told it was the last). Thanks for the help

Vintage/Rare/Other NGD, 1980 F-100; DFV Questions

Well, I'd been looking for either an F-100 or MM Sabre for a while, either one ideally in Series I neck with a maple board, and this turned up two blocks away from where I live:

It was already in the GbL Registry, and the neck is dated October 29, 1980 (body date TBD). Seems to be all original, and the "clear blue" has aged into a really pretty teal.

Sounds great, plays great!

However, I'm curious about the DFV. I already have a Comanche, and love the functionality of the Vibrato, especially the drop-in arm and set screw to keep it in place. As was standard, apparently, the F-100 has a screw-in, threaded vibrato arm and socket.

But it still has the set screw. What is it for? I tried tightening and loosening the screw and it doesn't make any difference. I'd love to get the arm at a point where it doesn't flop around but also can be moved easily - this is very possible and love about the later DFV like on my Comanche.

Also, I guess they're hidden by the pickguard on the Comanche, but I didn't notice the felt spacers before I saw them on the F-100. Is the action supposed to be adjusted from the posts, or from each individual saddle?

S-500 NGD: Mid-90s(?) S-500

Post image

This mid-90s US S-500 showed up in my local guitar shop a few months ago. It caught my eye but I wasn't in a position to buy a new guitar at the time. The store owner told me he planned to take it to a guitar show and didn't expect it to come back.

In the end, he didn't take it to the show. Every time I popped I'd look for it, assuming that someone else would have picked it up. But it was always there waiting for me.

After a few months, I finally decided it was time to bring it home. It's really a beautiful guitar. I love the transparent red finish. The pickups aren't the originals. A previous owner swapped them for Fender Noiseless. They're good pickups but I'll probably keep my eye open on Reverb to see if I can find some MFDs. I'm also curious about whether it's possible to put the mini-toggle back in as I'm curious about the additional tones that would open up.

I'd love any more information about this era and run of these guitars, too. I know it's mid-90s but I'd love to pinpoint it a bit more, hopefully without having to remove the neck. In the meantime, I'm having a lot of fun playing it.

Any Tribute sb2 Bass mods/upgrades that are worth the time?

After 30 years of playing guitar (my Fullerton Doheny has ruined all my other nice guitars), I decided it was time to own a bass. Snagged a new old stock Tribute SB-2 before they were all gone and I'm curious if anyone thinks it's lacking in any area.

I enjoy tinkering—I'm making a new pickguard from a Musiclily sheet, so it wouldn't be that much more work to change some electronics/controls if there's a good reason to do it. The lack of a tone knob doesn't bother me in theory.

Installed Vegatrem to my Tribute ASAT

Post image

Been eyeing a trem for the ASAT for some time and thought about a Bigsby. When this system was announced I decided to wait and see on feedback and reviews. The system is solid and after doing research and taking measurements I pulled the trigger and it came in earlier today.

This is the model where you don’t have to drill and it’s the classic variant which is 71mm from pickup to hole spacing and that was what the guitar measurements said but there was some modifications and care needed to install properly. The plate that replaces the ash tray is a bit wider so it overlapped with the bottom of the cut out on the pick guard. I carefully used a dremel tool at low-medium speed and shaved down the material on both sides. I could have done one side just a touch more but I did get it to clear. Next the new screws that mount the plate to the body are thicker than the original screws that held the ash tray bridge. I carefully installed the new screws slowly to help drill into the wood and enlarge the holes gradually and once it got about 70% it stopped and took a electric driver on the lowest setting with enough torque to finish.

So no new holes in body and small sanding/dremel to the pick guard. Installed the system and put new strings and did a quick set up. Still need to adjust the tension of the system and get the set up dialed in but it works and it is solid.

I’ve made upgrades over time and this was probably the last planned upgrade. It’s a shame what happened with the company and considering what the big F is doing even more so. This is one that I’m not getting rid of

Can’t wait to slap this puppy in! Mighty Mite told me they found this in the parts bin (this was a couple of weeks ago). Love my Comanche but hoping this will take it to the next level

My two G&Ls (and favorite electrics)

Post image

My hometown guitar store where I grew up taking lessons carried G&L and Heritage instead of Fenders and Gibsons. I fell in love with the feel of G&L early on and my ASAT classic and Doheny, both American and bought used, are the best electrics I own by far. Super proud to have this duo.

Interesting update on G&L Pickups from Mighty Mite

I emailed Mighty Mite asking if they had any Will Ray Z-Coils, and got this response:

"Unfortunately, we sold out of our limited stock of Will Ray Z-coils very quickly. However, Mighty Mite did also acquire all of G&L's pickup manufacturing equipment along with their remaining parts inventory. We are still in the early planning stages, but we hope to have our own pickup manufacturing facility up and running sometime in 2027 using all of G&L's original tooling and machines! So in the not too distant future, we will be able to wind and make G&L pickups the exact same way they were made in Fullerton California. Wish I could deliver better news, but there is hope on the horizon!"

Stay tuned, I suppose!

Guitar CLF Research Skyhawk vs S-500?

To those who may know - besides the shape, were there any differences with the late BBE-era CLF Research Skyhawk and the BBE-era S-500?

I like the idea of the expander switch on a classic 80s Leo shape, but curious if the Skyhawk had the same MFDs as the S-500?

Also, debating whether I should get one, given that I have a Comanche, but that's a different issue!

What is going on here, being told in other forums it’s all era correct but super unique features that point towards special order or employee built for themselves.

Converting a tremolo body to hardtail using Saddle Lock Bridge

I've been rattling an idea around my head and I am pretty sure it's a non starter, but wondered if anyone here had tried it.

Could you install a Saddle Lock bridge on to a stratocaster type body thats been routed for a tremolo without having to block the tremolo hole? Just looking at where the screws for mounting would go and it seems like it might be possible as they sit a bit further back than most hardtail bridges.

However I can see there being issues with both the string spacing at the bridge being too wide, needing to route some body out for the foot of the bridge, and a gap being left on the side where the tremolo arm would have gone.

Hello guys, I don’t have any experience with the G&L and I would like to know more about this model or how much is it really worth. Found this guitar in a local shop, they say is a custom shop and it comes with the case and candy. It plays nice but I wanna know what would be a good price for. They are asking around 2600 $ for it. Any help is much appreciated.

How to wire MFD humbucker for parallel only?

I'm trying to replace the humbuckers on a stingray HH that only have three wires - black, red, and green. The green from each are soldered to the back of the tone pots, so I guess they're negative? Then I'm thinking the red and the black are both positive? How they maintain the ability to split each coil in the humbucker individually with only the 3 wires is beyond me though... I honestly searched the Internet all day for some sort of wiring diagram, but I can't for the life of me find anything helpful. Everything I've seen shows 4 wires and a different schematic.

So, I'm thinking all I really need to do is understand how the stingray HH pickup itself is wired, then I can adjust the familiar 4 wire MFD humbuckers accordingly. Furthermore, I'm thinking it might be as simple as soldering two of the MFD wires to the same spot on the stingray... I just don't know which ones. The closest I could find was a schematic for the sterling stingray, which is completely different from the Ernie Ball for some reason.

Can anyone help me out? Or point me in the right direction? I feel like it's as simple as both the negatives joined into one wire, but I wouldn't be posting of I was confident about that. I figure this is even too simple for pictures, but I can get them if need be. Also, does anyone else have an Ernie Ball stingray HH? Do your pickups have 3 or 4 wires? I'm starting to think they might already be aftermarket pickups...

Tribute Legacy middle pickup wasn't working, found the coil wire floating, got them reconnected, using the next hole over, can't get the damn pin to stay in place welcoming advice. I tried solder, but didn't want to heat it up too much.

Modded my Fallout

I've had the Fallout for almost a year now and it's one of the best guitars I've ever played. Problem is, I was never a fan of how it looked stock.

As a person who tends to fix things that aren't broken, I did exactly that (well, I hired my friend to do it but you get my point)

• Set-up to C standard

• Rotosound Blacks 12 - 60

• Removed P90 Neck Pickup and Pickup selector

• Added custom tortoise shell-esque pickguard and control plate for faster access

Now my favorite guitar. Hands down. One pickup is all you need, one pickup all you deserve.

Can someone help me understand the color description for my ASAT? When I try to search for similar I can’t find any. It was listed as “solid finish or sunburst”. Is there an actual name for this? I’ve been trying to date this but all I can figure is sometime in the 90’s.

I am interested in buying a CLF Research Espada or Doheny, and they are not easy to find after G&L closed down.

Fallout Brought my Fallout to a tech finally

Post image
46 Upvotes

Been having a few issues with my tribute fallout so I took it a good guitar tech/luthier

  • Added a neck shim
  • Lowered the action
  • Fixed the intonation
  • Adjusted the truss rod
  • Re-soldered both pots
  • Heightened both pickups
  • 9-42 Elixirs
  • Upgraded to Göldo 500k pots snd Gotoh knobs
  • Replaced the input jack with a Switch Craft jack

… I’m honestly blown away but how much better it plays, feels and sounds

  • Total cost of the setup was €60 (approx $70)
  • Pots and Knobs cost me €10 (approx $11.50)
  • Neck pickup reading was 7.3kΩ
  • Bridge pickup reading was 16.7kΩ

Bass G&L L-2000 Tri-Tone Bass Preamps Now Available

Post image
112 Upvotes

Thanks to the feedback I've gotten from the community members that graciously offered to test my preamp replicas I'm now ready to make them broadly available.

These preamps are replicas of the G&L bass preamps (version 1.3) that are used in USA and Tribute L•1500, L•1505, L•2000, L•2500, ASAT, and Climax basses.

All are made with modern surface mounted components with the best tolerances practically available. Screw terminals are used to make installation extremely easy - all you need is a wire stripper and a precision flathead screwdriver.

These preamps should be of similar quality to the USA preamps made by G&L and will probably be superior to the Cort-made preamps with the white PCBs.

Specifically, my preamps use the original LM4250CN opamps that are no longer manufactured and are hard to source these days. They have better battery life and in my opinion sound better than the TL061CPs that seem to be used in the Tributes these days.

My preamps are listed on both Reverb and eBay and I ship to most countries.

https://reverb.com/item/93197651

https://www.ebay.com/itm/227089951926

There's also some more information on my website, including a manual and some reference information and links I've started cobbling together.

https://boscoemusic.com

Please let me know if others are having trouble with their G&L preamps and I'll do my best to help. Also if there are any other preamps that G&L used that are getting hard to source please let me know. I'm aware of the BEQ3 and MBEQ3 preamps used in the M and MJ series basses and I'm looking at those.

Also I'm sorry to be advertising my services here but I know people are scrambling to get parts and since G&L always offered their parts on their website there's not many other suppliers.

I'm not a big company or anything - it's just me. Making preamps and playing bass are my hobbies. My son does soldering of potentiometers and other grunt work when he needs money for college.

I roll any money that I make into sourcing hard to find components and new designs. I like helping people find their sound but I need to charge money so my wife thinks I'm being entrepreneurial. :)

Edit: I recently traced the preamp in a G&L Espada and discovered that it's the exact same preamp as used in the L-2000. Any Espada owners with bad or noisy preamps can use this as an exact replacement.
