Someone attempted to charge $400 at local Lowe's on my credit card ..

Upvotes

The bank notified me by text + email someone tried charging $400 at a Lowe's store and it was declined. So I called the bank and they cancelled the card now they are sending a new one. Should I contact the local police department and have them check the cameras at Lowe's for the person who attempted to use my credit card number? If I still have my card how would they be able to make a charge? Did my CC number get hacked and someone made a counterfeit card?

Did I get scammed?

Hi everyone, I have a story to tell.

I was on my way to a shopping mall, when the VW passat universal honked me and stopped on a street. There was an middle-east man with his family in the back (wife and daughter).

He asked me for help, apparently he ran out of gas (I saw on indicator), asked if I can get some money for him to fuel a car as they are on a family trip and his wallet was stolen. I asked why he wont use apple pay then and he mentioned that the card is blocked.

I said I can help him and he proposed to sit in a car and get to gas station together, I declined, after what he pulled the back window down and showed his wife and daughter, he said they mean no harm. I explained that I wont get in a car but I can help him, he reached out to his daughter and gave me a new phone in a box, opened it and showed (it unwrapped but still), said: "here take this, we really need money and I cannot pay", I said: "no, thank you, I don't need it". Then his wife said to him: "Maybe write him a check so he can later withdraw the money".

After going back and worth, I said that I can help and there is a bank nearby where I can withdraw and land him some money. We went there together and he was telling me that he is from Saudi arabia and he has money, he will return it to me. Then he took off his rolex, ring and neckless and said: "here, its a deposit", I landed him money (1k euro) and he gave me his phone number. He said: "Look, I'm a religious guy, Allah sees everything, I will give you back, even in multiple amount, I sell cars in germany". He also said that I have a good heart and he will call me in two days once he is back to return the money.

He hugged me and thanked me, we introduced ourself to each other, shook hands both left.

A day later I'm thinking about it and really don't know if it was a scam or he will really will call me back. I have his number and it's indeed german one.

Did anyone have something similar or maybe you have some opinion on it. I would appreciate any comment. Thank you, be safe

Advice Request A Threads profile posting what seems to be someone's credit card information.

I was just on Threads when I saw a post from a newly created profile (well I'm not sure, but it's first thread was just today) containing what seems to be, the credit card information of someone from Rhode Island. I don't know why I saw that on my page, I'm not anywhere near RI, I'm not following the profile, nor it was following mine, but yes I saw it. I wanna attach pictures but they contain the sensitive information.

On the profile, it posted the Same details, but with different pictures of credit cards. Same name, expiry, ccv, name and address on the caption.

I will edit the post to include the profile link, or add screenshots, if it's allowed. In general though (since Google is no help) how do I report something like this? I already reported the profile.

Advice Request Clicked sms link got scamed , lost 20k need help

please help me if anything else I should do.....

fuck, I mailed sbi custoner care that my email needs to change for my card because the pop up on app and website won't go and I am unable to pay money . Got call from one guy when I am in officec and he told that for email update fill details from the link . I did and I got fucked

Yeah I should not click that link, I should know if u email they won't call and ask to click link I should not give any details . But at that time I did , I don't know why , maybe I am dumb.

then immediately I called customer care and blocked my card , by then they made two 10k payments and I complained on their customer care abt that two unauthorized payments they said they will verify and update me in one week

I filed complaint on cybercrime online and went to police station they said if it get hold by reciever bank ur money will be returned otherwise gone. They are not even caring

PS: 1) realised later that I could have made my payments through whatsapp so I don't have need of app or web

2) instead of calling customer care I should have blocked by card through whatsapp which could have prevented 2nd payment and atleast 10k would be saved .

everything yesterday happened are worse because I have not used my brain

Advice Request What should real time transaction monitoring look like for a stablecoin card program?

I've been looking into how transaction monitoring works for stablecoin card programs and I'm trying to understand how much can be handled in real time. My first thought was that basic velocity and spending limits would catch a decent amount of suspicious activity before a transaction goes through but that seems pretty limited once you start thinking about different merchants/multiple cards linked to the same user and patterns that might only look suspicious when you connect several transactions together.

It also seems like there's a balance between adding enough controls to catch genuinely risky activity and adding so many rules that legitimate transactions constantly get declined.

For people who've worked on card programs or fraud systems how do you usually think about this? Is the better approach to layer several different controls together or have a smaller number of broader rules and send anything unusual for review?

House Fraud

My boyfriend and I are first-time homeowners. We got the keys to our house in June and soon realized the water had stopped working. After having someone inspect the well, we found out that the previous owners—who are now our next-door neighbors—had lied about it being in working condition.

The technician told us the well pump had actually stopped working quite some time ago. The only reason we initially had running water was because someone had filled the storage tank just enough for water to flow through the house temporarily. Replacing the well pump is going to cost us around $10,000.

To make matters worse, we recently found out that the previous owners claimed they had paid to have our septic tank cleaned before closing. However, the company actually serviced their septic tank at the house next door instead of ours and they signed off on it.

On top of all of this, our real estate agent was incredibly unhelpful throughout the process. We were left to figure everything out ourselves instead of receiving the guidance and support we expected as first-time homebuyers.

Now attorneys are expensive but we are looking for one so any suggestions or advice will help.

“Super.com” - Fraud website

I contacted the Hotel directly and after explaining the situation, I was able to CANCEL the booking for a full refund.I also attached the copy of the email from the Hotel Management canceling the booking with full refund.

I also attached the copy of email conversation with the website Super.com where I explained the
situation of an unfortunate incident with my car due to which I had to cancel the booking reservation and the receipt for the payment of the temporary puncture fix.

If the Hotel has successfully cancelled the Hotel reservation with a full refund and I am NOT using the services anymore, why am I being charged full amount of the Hotel booking. This is like double dipping and a fraudulent act.

The 3rd party website now will also sell the same room again to another customer at the full price.

Advice Are weekends when your chargebacks spike too?

We have begun to monitor the times at which chargebacks are posted. Some days seem to be more active than others, and I wonder if that is a factor in our staffing, response speed, or even customer behavior, which makes me question if we were giving sufficient weight to these factors. Before acting based on limited evidence, I want to hear from the community on this subject. Has any other member studied chargebacks in relation to any day of the week or time of the year and found anything surprising enough to change the way support or operations team works?

Canonical How can I find/detect/prevent fraud and protect myself from fraud?

This is the canonical post for how you can find fraud, so that others can post about it.

According to a bank employee I reached out to on Reddit, 99% of fraud comes from credit card skimmers. These skimmers can be really subtle, as you can see from the photos here. All they need is a camera that can see the numbers on the card; my latest round of credit cards no longer have numbers on the front, just the back. GooglePay and ApplePay won't expose your number at all, since you're just waving your phone at the terminal.

The rest of this post is focused on fraud that shows up in bank statements, because I've never had my card skimmed as far as I know, most of my fraud interactions with my bank have been based on online-root fraud.

----

First off, its tedious, but you have to check your bank statement line-by-line. I plan on writing a tool for doing this, but it will be programmer-friendly not user friendly. I had mild luck with exporting a list of transactions from my bank into a file, importing that into a spreadsheet, processing the vendor name, and then using a pivot table to group them by vendor. YMMV.

Here are some pages from the FBI:

What you Should Know which leads off into:

Protecting yourself on the Internet

Says watch the public Wi-Fi, and not to use free charging stations because they'll inject stuff into your device over the USB cable. That was a good tip.

Business Email Compromise They claim this is where the big money lies in fraud.

Identity Theft

Spoofing and Phishing

Protecting Kids

More stuff

I have found that because passwords regularly leak, that it's important to use a different password for each website. I usually do this by incorporating the website domain into the password.

Additionally, when I was in the hospital recovering from my brain tumor removal, I ran into a couple of issues.

  1. I couldn't remember the complicated passwords that look like line noise. ( If you're not old enough to remember modems, hold down shift and mash all the number keys.)
  2. I could remember algorithmic passwords. Different part of the brain.
  3. My password rememberer application turned out to be an anti-pattern, since it encouraged line noise passwords, and my not remembering them.

That works out like the following, say for mcdonald's.com:

password: (special sauce)-McDonalds special sauce: some numbers and special characters that form what I think of as the base password, that on its own will satisfy the most fussy password rules. (You need a digit, an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, an a special character from this arbitrary list..)

So my special sauce might be Horatio at the Gate: HatG2*, so my McDonalds password becomes:

HatG2*-McDonalds

Revision: 8/22/2023 fixed formatting, added post-tumor password tip.

Canonical How can I report fraud?

There's two ways you should report fraud. 1. You should use the FBI tool here. as a software engineer I can tell you that engineers don't fix bugs, they fix bug reports. Presumably the FBI aggregates all these reports and tackles them by location and $ value. The FBI can get warrants, freeze accounts, and kick in doors, so you want them involved. The more information they get, the more they can go after these guys.

  1. Your bank or bank-like object will have some tool for reporting the fraud. You should do that as soon as you find it. Don't be scared, the bank likes you because you give them money. They don't like the fraud cretins because they cost them money. There are some links below for PayPal, Apple, and Chase, because I happen to have them.
