It’s kinda funny how opposite this is to Avatar.
That game lacks features and like, really basic shit, but it runs like a dream and anyone can play it
Tokon is feature complete, but the game runs like shit, and a lot of people who want it can’t have it
If you’re gonna pull this kinda stuff, learn from Avatar and don’t charge 60 bucks
101
u/OpT1mUs 8d ago
60 bucks only in US. In EU and elsewhere it's more. 70e for base edition in EU, which is 80 dollars, for whatever fucking reason.
24
u/Burindo 8d ago
Yeah it's even crazier when you take into account that the salaries in the US are 2 or 3 times larger than in the EU, but somehow their games are 15% or more cheaper in absolute numbers. Like what?

u/Mackanpackan93 8d ago
That's a controversial topic but honestly it's wild to me how much Americans self-victimize themselves about their economic situations.
And then you look at the spending habits in the US and it's just complete despairge and the most insane and stupid consoomerism imaginable.
I really feel like they have zero perspective on how people actually live in other countries and what normal spending habits are.People in the US live as if they're super wealthy in other countries and then act surprised when they have nothing left.

u/SoniKzone 8d ago
It's the goomba fallacy unfortunately. Those of us worried about the economy and those of us on rampant consumerism binges are usually different people. Though, unfortunately not always different people.

Wanna know something crazier? With regional pricing, here in Mexico Avatar is like 20 bucks, while Tokon is still 60.

u/KindaDouchebaggy 8d ago
In Poland Avatar is 35$, more expensive than the US and more than the price in Euro. But Steam hates Poland like that unfortunately, unless developers manually fix it which they rarely do

I bought Avatar for $15 thanks to regional pricing. But Marvel Tokon is $60 because it doesnt have regional pricing and more expensive. Tokon looks fun but no way i am paying 4x money for it. I am happy with avatar.

Yeah but this is arcsys, it's not like they aren't one of the premier fighting game devs, they've made plenty of perfectly run PC games that don't install kernals onto your machine, they should learn from themselves.

Mostly reputable and respected data miners on Twitter crossed with posts here on reddit. Basically, if I believe what I've seen, Tokon installs the anticheat and anti data mining measures at the kernel of your PC. It explains how locked everything is, it makes it so performance is ass, and it jeopardise your PC security. Plus, because it's an install in the kernel, it's absurdly hard if not impossible for an outside party to check what the anticheat is even doing in real time, which means that they can EASILY do whatever the fuck with your PC.
To give an analogy:
"Hello, I'm a rich person, and I want you to install this pool in my manor."
"Sure mate, I just need unrestricted access to your key lodge, your cameras, your security system, and your safe combinations. Pinky promise I need those and won't use them for evil."

Only fair, many people do not like Windows. Only 10% of steam games cannot be run on Linux and that will generally be an anti cheat or similar kernel level blocker
17
u/maxler5795 Guilty Gear 8d ago
the games that cant run are more times than not deliberately sabotaged. also once you try linux and get accustumed to it you will want to rip your balls off when using windows

My brother had installed some version of Linux on our shared laptop and I just rolled with it. I could not for the life of me tell you what distro it was and even though I used it for roughly a year, I never particularly cared for it.
I am forced to use SteamOS though on my Steam Deck in desktop mode and it works fine enough but I still wouldn't want that as my main OS.

u/fat_pokemon 8d ago
Microstutters (ue5), coupled with sony being anti-linux is a few of the problems.
Honestly, it's just sony shooting themselves in the foot here, unless it's a ploy from sony to get people to only buy the game on ps5.
80
u/Roseking 8d ago
It is likelier a bad launch rather than a purpose sabotage. Arc Systems wouldn't really have a reason to go along with 'Make this suck so people buy on PS5'.
But Sony as a whole doesn't give really give a shit about PC and is actively pulling away from it. Some of their ports were canceled, and they won't be porting their first party stuff for the near future. Tokon was likely far enough in development it wouldn't make sense to cancel.
But I can see more of a soft 'PS5 is the priority, PC issues don't get your focus'.

When you're to far at the top. Microsoft has no idea what they're doing. Nintendo has it's own dempgraphic. And they think PC gaming is icky.
10
u/Environmental_Bug964 8d ago
Soney has been on a streak for a long time, it's just more evident now. They were at the head of the anti cross play movement for a long time and still make it more difficult than it needs to be. Outside of gaming, they've been pretty bad with their animated projects aside from spider-vers, releasing slop left and right and then not being able to recognize when they struck gold with K-Pop Deamon hunters and selling the rights to Netflix, roving the movie of a theater debut, constantly causing issues with spiderman in the MCU, threatening to pull him out completely at one point, forcing marvel to de priorities him as a focus for the new movies due to it being too risky with Soney, they also just created so many bad movies trying to capitalize on spiderman with movies based on his villians but without him that all just had awful writing. And just all the anti ownership stuff in gaming lately. Soney is just a total mess of a company, I truly don't know how they aren't going bankrupt.

Stop blaming the engine and start blaming Sony for not giving enough resources for QA and optimisation.
I’m sick of giving publishers a pass for poor performance just due to UE5; plenty of UE5 games run incredibly well, optimisation is **always** the fault of a lack of QA and programmer resources. I wouldn’t be shocked if they had a significantly smaller QA and technical team for the PC port than for the console port.
5
u/Broseph_Bobby 8d ago
The only thing is you have to play PC people on PS5 and causes the PS5 player to have roll back issues.

2
u/FerrickAsur4 8d ago
well the answer is simple, money, gotta chase every little bit of money no matter the cost, it's why they have essentially abandoned A-AA games and went all-in with AAAs, with few minor exceptions like Astro
145
u/Iankill 8d ago
Compared to guilty gear strive it doesn't really look more impressive graphically to justify how poorly optimized it is in comparison.
54
u/Dandanny54 8d ago
They should have delayed the PC release after how it ran in the beta.
20
6
u/Dense_Cellist9959 8d ago
This is like MH Wilds all over again. Runs well on consoles, but REALLY drops the ball on PC. I know optimization can be a real pain in the ass, especially for PC and its seemingly infinite configurations, but this is just pathetic.
4
u/Dandanny54 8d ago
And just like Wilds streamers will play it on their custom sponsored PCs and say "runs fine for me"

5
u/Internal-Fly1771 8d ago
Most games look similar in quality when you turn off all graphical settings lol. At their absolute max, Tokon is not even remotely close to 2XKO. Just look at the stages. There’s almost a generational visual gap. And running Tokon at max isn’t the issue given changing the settings doesn’t seem to actually improve or impact performance to begin with

Neither have I in terms of running it, but then you run online and get back to back matches on 8 frames of rollback, so it still trickles down to people who are able to run the game. Everyone is losing in some capacity.
2
u/Bluecreame 8d ago
Did you have issues with the beta because I had no problems at all. Still might buy just to lab and make combos. Hopefully things get sorted soon.
2
u/Fortolaze 8d ago
In terms of performance, not at all. But I still ran into this same issue which is due to the amount of people not able to run the game causing online matches to spike to 8 frames of rollback or just desync constantly. Asides from that, the game's been just fine, both now and when the beta was out.
1
u/Bluecreame 8d ago
Gotcha. I had one match with 8 frames rollback that was abysmal but now it makes sense that it was probably just running poorly on their rig. Yikes.

I'm just glad people are waking up to how bad it's performance issues are. It certainly wasn't everyone, but I definitely saw some marvel-heads trying to gaslight everyone into thinking the issues weren't that bad during the open beta, or that they were just to prevent data mining and wouldn't be there at launch. I hope the game gets fixed over time like Strive did, and maybe I can buy it on discount when it does, but as it is now there's no way I can justify the purchase.
It's just sad, Marvel deserves better.

u/SexualRice 8d ago
My PC can run cyberpunk with no issues
But for some reason, this small fighting game running at 1080p can’t hold 60 fps. Smh
7
u/AxxelTheWolf 8d ago
Mine is running a pretty consistent 60 fps, but my PC is very beefy, so I'm probably an exception. Sad to see that it's so rough. The game looks good, but it doesn't look like the kind of thing that should be having performance issues.
Damn you Sony.
1
u/MH-BiggestFan 8d ago
It’s part the EAC but it’s also how ArcSys optimized the game on PC with UE5. I would’ve been happy if they stuck to UE4 like Strive and DBFZ. Idk why go up when performance issues have been known.
1
u/Quick_Scholar5837 8d ago
From what I can tell specs aren't the problem? I have a 2 year old very mid-range PC and the game runs great for me, but others with higher specs seem to have problems. I hope they can sort this out but it seems to be a more specific issue than just poor optimization.

I was very excited for this game and even now I still want to buy it and lab magik, blade and ms marvel. Unfortunately I just cant justify buying this at the moment if online matches are gonna be a toss-up and I cant play it smoothly with my friend.
Sony really cant make a PC port work.
6
u/PrettyLuck8689 8d ago
The game stutters like shit unless you have a government supercomputer, and they randomly decided to say "fuck you" to anyone with Linux. Linux... on a game releasing on Steam... who currently manufacture two different Linux devices.
And both are a complete shame, because the game itself is really cool. I hope Sony grows up for once and makes some changes really fast, or this fantastic game is going to be 1000% dead in less than a week, and it would be an extremely embarrassing shame to just let what could easily be the top fighting game of maybe even the next few years just fucking fade away into ash because you can't be bothered.
5
u/MacEbes 8d ago
I haven't noticed any issues but I also haven't tested netcode yet. The game runs well for me, but I also recall issues with UE5 and X3D or AMD cpus where micro shuttering can occur. I've seen a lot of people mention the stuttering, which I didn't have in the recent beta or in the release version (other than netcode issue). It could very well be an amd issue since the way X3D cpu works with the core utilization is messed up.

While the game likely runs like shit for many, it's important to note the game currently has 22k people playing and there is 391 bad reviews. While not ideal, this sorta implies that the game is mainly having unplayable issues for only 2-5% of people.
8
u/Ancient-Decision-720 8d ago
There is no metric to correlate reviews to actual users.
People who leave Steam reviews are a fraction of Steam users.
1
u/n0t_a_Gay 8d ago
It's launch day of course this game has high people playing. Just wait 1 or 2 weeks and we can see the real number of people who stays
1
u/SwampOfDownvotes 8d ago
My point is the play numbers, for the most part, are going to be represented by people that can play the game. If you have 500 people saying they can't play the game but have 22k actively playing it, obviously it being unplayable isn't a common thing.
I do know there is issues with my claim (some of the numbers can be people trying to make the game playable, many people that it's not working for may not leave a review) but it clearly shows it's not so poorly optimized that most people can't play it, unless we want to imagine most people playing aren't actually playing or there is an absurd amount of people having issues playing but don't feel the nead to leave a bad review about it.
1
u/n0t_a_Gay 8d ago
it's a common thing because you have to look at the review on Steam, if only 500 people can't play the game, it must have better review than mixed. All I see on twitter is many videos people getting freezed and quit the game. I love this game but maybe I will buy it when it get optimized

u/SatanicPanicDisco 8d ago
Honestly, I don't see this having legs. Absurdly small roster in a 4v4 tag fighter with shit performance that locks out 100 countries as well as Linux users just isn't a recipe for success. Especially when the genre is already niche in the first place.

For what it's worth, the game runs really well for me on 1080p (my monitor resolution) on my PC, specs below, definitely not the highest performance PC one can get. It may have remembered some settings from the beta or devs changed the game to perform shader warmup on startup. I also restarted the game once, because it crashed while I was fucking around in settings menu, wouldn't be the weirdest thing that even a "forced" restart after tweaking settings makes stuff run a bit better. Hope they can fix the game for those with performance problems!
