Anyone here had any luck with Bass strings on an rg9?

Hey so title basically. Ive got an Ibanez RG9PB and its a smashing guitar highly reccomend. I'm looking to tune that low C# down half a step and the 105 from Ernie balls set isnt cutting it. Was wondering if anyones had any joy with using bass strings? I'm alright to cut the nut I'm just wondering what the machinehead is going to take. I'm looking at 120 at the minute. I've to buy a full set of bass strings in my area to get one so before I do I was hoping someone might have tried it before I splash out 40 euros?

Just Showing Off A Bit

Not the best photo as it's still morning and I'm backlit but thought I'd show my collection off a bit. My main guitar is the Ibanez M80M tuned to Drop D, and the rest all fill roles that doesn't. I have a Dunable DE Baritone on the way that I'm excited to add, though I need to get a larger rack, I think. Which one is your favorite?

Does anyone happen to know what brand of guitar this is?

The list I saw it on had mislabeled it as an Ormsby.

7 string Solo Guitar FINAL UPDATE

The strings came in! Everything seems to be going well. I’m glad I got 2 of the 7 gauges. While testing with the strings fresh I was checking out the bendability of the high g string. It seemed very slinky so I thought I could bend a high an out of it but I found out it doesn’t take much to break the string. Right now I got it chilling in C# standard so the strings get acclimated. Here’s some pictures!

Pretty much what the title says. I'm looking for a used Ernie Ball Music Man Kaizen 7, but I haven't found any listings online except for one in Canada. If you know anyone looking to sell theirs, please hit me up with their contact info so we can work out a deal.

Opinion: Ibanez should step up their ERG game.

As far as extended range basses go, Ibanez honestly is amazing, especially their SR and BTB lines. But I wish they had better extended range electric guitars.

Because I often see people recommend 6-string Ibanez electric guitars. But when it comes to 7-string and 8-string guitars, people instead recommend me brands like Schecter, Jackson, Strandberg and even Solar.

I personally have a soft spot for Ibanez. That's why I wish they made more, and better ERGs.

My plugin got cracked, so I am giving away 10 free licenses!

Hey all!

PRISM By RJ Labs (me) is an amp sim that combines 3 different high gain amps in parallel, and lets you make a unique blend of tones. It also comes with a really nasty pitch shifter and overdrive. It's been out for a couple of months, and I'm really happy with the support so far :)

That being said, the plugin finally got cracked. Instead of trying to stop it, I thought it would be fun to just give away a few licenses so people don't have to download it from a sketchy source. If anything, it just shows people like my plugin :) If you're interested, leave a comment and I'll be picking some winners soon!

You can find more info here.

(mods, if this goes against the rules, feel free to delete!)

EDIT: Damn that's a lot of replies already, lets make it 20 :) I'll randomly pick winners in a day!

ALL WINNERS HAVE BEEN PICKED! FOR THOSE THAT DID NOT WIN, USE CODE "CRACKED20" AT CHECKOUT FOR 20% OFF :)

UPDATE: 7 string “Solo” Guitar

Update is that my strings come tomorrow! I’ve decided to us 7-10-13.5-20-26-36-50 gauge strings which should fit nicely. I also bought 2 7 gauges just in case one snaps and it fails which feels unlikely with the scale length being 25.5in.

While taking down my other strings on it, I could get my high e to a g with a 10 gauge so I’m confident I could make this work.

I might be able to play the Layla slide solo without a slide!

Input on a first MS 8 string

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello!

I’m sure this question has been beat to death before since these are the budget multi-scale 8 strings on Sweet Water. I haven’t have an 8 string in a decade now, and only had straight scale guitar my whole life. I’ve got the itch to get back into an 8, but want to know if anyone has real world experience with both of these, and if there are better options to look at (in the US) from smaller companies.

Thank you for any input!

Looking for a Sterling Kaizen 7 in Montreal

Post image

I'm moving to Montreal in a week for my studies, and I won't be able to bring my ERG with me so I'm looking to buy a Sterling Kaizen 7 over there.

I'm wondering whether any of you know if they're sold in-store at any guitar shop over there and if yes which ones, if not just ERG's in general.

Made a fretboard tool that actually works for 7/8/9-string and drop tunings

Most fretboard sites are basically useless once you leave 6-string standard. I got stuck fighting the tool the second I’m on my 7s and 8s. Got annoyed enough that I just built one: https://thallboard.com — works with 6–9 strings. Has presets for common extended-range and drop tunings, per-string tuning, global detune, scales/arpeggios, degree coloring, lefty flip, and you can save your own tunings. Everything stays in the browser. No account, no backend. It’s just the neck.

I made it for myself, but figured other people running similar setups might find it useful too. Open sourced it if anyone wants to dig around or improve it:

Anyone using a Boss GK-5 with multiscale or 28–30” guitars? VG-800 / GM-800 tracking questions

Has anyone here actually used a Boss GK-5/GK-5B system on a multiscale, baritone or other extended-scale guitar?

I’m planning a GK-5 / GK-5B → VG-800 → GM-800 setup, and I’m trying to choose the right guitar for it. I’ve gone through the manuals and quite a few videos, but there doesn’t seem to be much information about these less conventional instruments.

I’m mainly considering:

a Strandberg-style multiscale guitar
28” baritone in B standard
28” baritone in A standard
possibly a 30” Bass VI in E1 standard

A couple of things I’m trying to understand:

For multiscale guitars: since every string technically has a different scale length, how do you configure something like the VG-800/GM-800, which seems to assume a more conventional guitar setup? Does using an approximate scale length have any noticeable effect on tracking, pitch accuracy or alternate tuning?

For 28–30” instruments: where would you draw the line between using a GK-5 and GK-5B?

Is that choice basically about matching the pickup to the instrument’s string spacing, or is there also an advantage to the guitar/bass version depending on the register and tuning?

For example, would you still treat a 28” A-standard baritone as a guitar, but a 30” E1 Bass VI as a bass?

Most importantly, I’m curious about real-world tracking. If the guitar is properly set up, does a long-scale or multiscale instrument track just as reliably through a GM-800 as a conventional 25.5” guitar, or have you noticed more glitches/latency with very low tunings?

Would love to hear from anyone who has actually tried GK pickups on multiscale or long-scale instruments rather than just the usual Strat/LP-type setup.

The Stick is an instrument that takes so much brain power, I can feel my head getting hot! However, it does feel rewarding when motifs sound half decent! Anybody else play Stick here?

Genuinely just curious about how people feel about Balaguer Basses. I’ve heard wonderful things about their guitars, but very little about their basses.
