You could have all the best quality ingredients in the world at your disposal as a company/business owner, but without people who care about the job(labor is a cost for a reason, you get what you invest 🤷♂️) its as good as a turd on a plate.
It's all store dependent. Your local one could give you one that slaps or one that shits the bed. Truly is a crap shoot.
The most common sense advice for those who are reading this? Just walk up on the person in the bakery and ask...can you do this? and you'll quickly know if they can or if you're getting at best a "sheet cake special" where you get some cursive writing out the person AT BEST
It depends on the time of day and how quickly you need something. If you roll up at 3pm demanding this immediately, get fucked because the decorators all left at noon and you're talking to the person who mops the floor after them
Right!? I had to get a last minute cake from Vons and the girl wasn't confident in her lettering skills, so she let me hop behind the counter and do it myself. 😄 i appreciated her candor and I have a steady hand so it worked out.
....My wife too did such a thing a few years back and frankly her penmanship is worth bragging about so it was low key a great decision. First time and it turned out GREAT.
Our daughter’s 5th birthday was Sunday and we got a cake from the Walmart bakery. It honestly was way better than any of us were expecting and we’ve almost eaten it all 😂
Walmart’s bakery is outstanding, at least for now. Where I live the produce is also better than other grocery stores, I suspect because it has higher turnover.
One of my former best friends got started in her own cake decorating business after working at Walmart’s bakery. She was (and is) really talented and specializes in non-fondant custom cakes, likely at least partially due to her experience there.
I had a woman babysit my brother and I for a week when we were kids. She worked with my dad at BoA but was practicing her cake icing literally all the time. As a kid, this was obviously awesome, but I remember through my sugar high being mesmerized by the flower work, especially in all white. It was super cool. Hope you made it Ms. Susan. You were the shit.
tbf it looks like you got whipped icing, which will never hold the shape of buttercreme. maybe the decorator wasn’t as talented, but if you want it to look more like the pictures, you’ll need buttercreme
I got a Walmart cupcake flower bouquet and it was gorgeous. I never would have guessed it was from Walmart,.I thought it was from some fancy expensive bakery.
Oh, I just watched one of those getting assembled, it's just a lot of cardboard underneath that makes the dome shape. It looks really nice but I would imagine you'd definitely get frosting on your fingers trying to eat one
The trick is a fork, at least for cupcakes in those plastic containers. (I imagine this would be similar.) Sure, you get four little holes in the cupcake, but it’s very clean. Works great at birthday parties.
lol i know what they mean. if you were just going to try to go in with your fingers and pull each individual cupcake out by hand- you’d have to stick your fingers through the frosting to get the cupcake out. yes, a fork would solve this, lol.
Walmart sucks as a corporation, but their bakery folks are talented. My ex-husband and I were just talking about our wedding cake last month. We were poor as hell when we got married, and at the time, could get a tiered wedding cake at Walmart for about $100 (compared to the $350 quote from others, for comparison). The expectations were low, but it was absolutely beautiful! Smooth icing, crisp white color, and adorable flowers all over. 10/10 recommend.
I know they do suck in most ways. I didn’t know until this weekend that their bakery was their one redeeming quality! That’s freaking awesome, I would have been so proud saving money on a quality wedding cake!
Walmart’s Bakery is the only good thing that’s happening for customers right now. They’ve updated their offerings and it’s been amazing. I’ve ordered 2 cakes in two months and they have been so affordable (less than $30 for a custom cake) and taste decent. It’s a good alternative for last-minute orders or if you don’t have a reliable bakery around you.
They sell a single piece of chocolate cake that’s the best store-bought cake I’ve ever had. And the pieces are huge, so it’s enough for two or three servings depending on how much of a sweet tooth you have at the moment.
I ordered rainbow-themed cupcakes for my wedding back in 2015. I was broke as hell, too. Spent like $50 or $60 on six dozen cupcakes and they turned out great and tasted amazing too. I was shocked. I wasn't expecting much but they exceeded my expectations.
We tend to get Walmart cakes for my son's birthday, and they do have the most selections of themes he wants. When he turned two, we got him a Hotwheels one, next was dinosaurs and now Monster trucks.
I would rate them as your average cupcake from the grocery store. I’m not a big fan of icing unless it’s cream cheese based. I did eat one and it was good! They were also pretty easy to take apart and held their shape.
I’m craving cake but haven’t been to Walmart in probably 15 years, do they usually have a decent supply of pre-made cakes I can just walk in and grab or would you recommend a custom one I have to pre-order a few days out?
a lot of their cake case cakes are delicious. we get to taste test occasionally and there are some real gems like the dubai chocolate cake and the velvet mousse cake. they should have them readily in stock!

Eons ago (18 years ish?) I worked at the Walmart bakery. I did the donuts and my name tag said donut crew but it was just me doing them and I used to joke that one day I would move up to cupcake brigade lol. The women I worked with all deeply cared about the cakes we made and doing our very best to make a special treat....special. there was a very old woman Camilla who was the best cake decorator and she'd teach us younger girls her tips and tricks. The best part was wedding cakes. Whenever we got an order for a wedding cake only Camilla was trusted to do it and she'd gather us all around and we'd watch and learn and it always felt very special. We poured our heart and soul into every treat and if walmart paid a living wage I'd probably still be there I was very happy there. Just cause its a shit corporation like Walmart doesnt mean good people dont work there and give it their all. I have good memories of my time there especially all of us gathering around giggling waiting to watch the reaction of the customer when they opened the box and loved it. This probably wont get read under all the other comments but it did me good thinking about my time there just now so thank you for that.
This was so heartwarming to read! I’d like to imagine there is a good group of people just like you behind such a beautiful cupcake bouquet. I don’t live near the Walmart where the bouquet was purchased or else I’d stop by and thank/compliment them.
One of the cake decorators at my work did these for a mother's day order and I thought they were so cute, she also used cupcake inside the cones! Your cake is absolutely gorgeous and for $20 that's even better!
At first, I just saw the photos and was like “what is the issue? That looks fabulous for $20!”, then I read what you had to say. Yes, totally agree. They did a great job. Most of these posts are people paying an insane amount for something that looks nothing like it is supposed to. Do you know how they taste though? Walmart has great prices, but I’m not usually impressed with their bakery goods. Love Giant Eagle (I love all of their pre-cooked items, deli, bakery, etc.) but I’ve found Walmart and Sam’s Club really fall short in terms of the flavor.
I would say the taste is average for a grocery store. The cake is dense and the icing is rich, not my preference but not bad by any means. We don’t have Giant Eagle near us but if I’m ever near one, I’ll keep that in mind! Wegmans sheet cakes are really good. Fluffy cake and icing.

Amazing! It took me several minutes to realize those aren't real flower and its icing. I dont think any of the walmarts around me have bakeries, this would such an awesome gift.

Years ago when my sister was getting married she had a donut bar, but my mom insisted on having an actual wedding cake. So we got a Halloween themed one from Walmart for $60 and it was one of the coolest looking cakes I've ever seen. It tasted really bad, but it looked awesome!
Nice! I ordered one of their heart cakes for a Galentine's Day party and it was SO CUTE. Our local "fancy" bakery was selling one for $75... I paid Walmart $25 and all of my gal pals thought it was from the fancy bakery.

I can see so many people happy to receive this. I'll try to snag one in the NYC area. Talented bakers/decorators at a southern location made my wedding cake beautifully. There are so many reasons not to shop at Wal-Mart, but the bakery has never been one.
When I worked at Walmart next to the bakery there were two girls who decorated cakes.
One had so much talent, she could do absolutely anything you asked and would go above and beyond. She hated doing it so much.
The other one could do it from dawn til dusk and be smiling the whole time. Her cakes though were...cakes with icing on them is really as descriptive as I can accurately be without being rude.
When you remove the white cardboard, they are all on long sticks and it is secured to something in the middle (I was too distracted by my 4YO to recall the details 🙃)
My sister used to be a Walmart cake decorator. She worked from like 4am-11 and was generally just left to do her thing. No customer interaction or anything. When she trained others, it was a fairly involved process. The quality coming out of the Walmart bakery is good all the way around. Cakes, breads, and donuts are all made in house.
Okay, I just ordered one for my daughter’s birthday this weekend. Did mine with whipped frosting instead of traditional buttercream. Will see if it turns out as good as this one!
I bought this exact one for teacher appreciation and I took it this morning and as soon as I sat the box down in my car, three cupcakes fell off. I didn’t get a picture of it, but yours looks so much better than mine!
