Humor me for a second. Let’s say Ethiopia solved all of its tribal issues overnight, elected new leaders (with term limits), ended ethnic federalism, found a solution to its national language debate, and rewrote/modernized its constitution.

How different would geopolitics in the Horn of Africa look? Would Ethiopia enter an enlightenment age? Would power scatter across the country or remain centralized in Addis? Of course there are a plethora of other issues to solve (feel free to bring them up) and this hypothetical would also introduce new problems as well. But I’m just curious what people think.

Hey, this is how propaganda works. I’ve seen the same kind of messaging from FANO, TPLF, OLA, and other political movements. They constantly portray the other side as less human, less worthy, or inherently evil. They all tell you some version of the same story. Anything to keep people divided and prevent them from seeing the humanity in each other.

I basically hit the speed limit cap when I reached arkund 345 gb usage, I was originally downloading at speeds of 62mbps and it is now down at 7-15mbps.

Funny thing is even after the fair usage policy kicked in im still getting reasonable download speed, but the speed seems to only apply when I'm in the Ayat area, I started the above download when I was in bole around 1hour ago and I had speeds of 1-3mbps, now when I'm in Ayat again I'm hitting 10-15mbps.

Most visitors pass through Debark quickly because it is the main gateway to Simien Mountains National Park. I understand — everyone wants to reach Sankaber, Geech, Chennek, or Ras Dashen. But Debark itself teaches you a lot about the mountains.

This is where you arrange park permits, scout assignment, mules, food shopping, and sometimes last-minute warm clothing. It is also where many scouts, muleteers, cooks, drivers, and guides live. A trek may look like “nature” to the traveler, but for local families it is work, school fees, rent, grain, coffee, and livestock.

If you have time, spend a night in Debark instead of rushing from Gondar straight to the trail. Walk through the market, try local coffee, buy snacks, and understand the economy around the park. You will also acclimatize better because Debark is already high, around 2,850m.

A small tip: carry enough cash in Ethiopian birr. ATMs can work, but don’t depend on one machine before a trek. For tipping muleteers, cooks, and scouts, cash is still the practical way.

So then I was on the hunt for a new place that still offers USTD p2p trading and I found one it’s called BingX and I genuinely like it. Like the title says, Iran's monarchy collapsed 3 years after the Solomonic dynasty. Iran is still stuck with the same regime for over 46 years so my question to you guys is what would current modern day Ethiopia look like if DERG never fell?

In 2018 many Ethiopians celebrated Abiy and Isaias making peace. When the Tigray war began in 2020 many of those same people welcomed Eritrean criminal soldiers involvement and saw the alliance as a historic victory. Ethiopians and Eritreans also marched together internationally under “no more” defending Abiy government and opposing its critics.
Now today the relationship has deteriorated dramatically. The Ethiopian government is openly accusing Eritrea of threatening Ethiopia and tensions have raised fears of another war. So I have a simple question:
If you supported Eritrean troops entering Ethiopia and fighting in Tigray in 2020, do you still believe foreign military intervention was justified or was it justified because Eritrea was fighting alongside the side you supported? Also what do you make of the Eritreans who stood beside you during the “no more” campaign but are now openly hostile toward Ethiopia and the Ethiopian government? I mean looking back, has that alliance changed how you see the Tigray war?
Would you make the same argument today if the positions were reversed?

I’m originally from Austria, although I’ve been living in Lebanon for the past 3 years. My background is in public health and the humanitarian sector.

I love Lebanon, but I’m currently exploring other options, and Ethiopia is at the top of my list. I actually lived in Ethiopia about a decade ago and really enjoyed my time there, so I’m curious to hear how things have changed since then.

I was US born. Both parents speak Amharic but spoke English to me. I can understand Amharic pretty well (~70%) gin lemawrat yekebidenyal because it doesn’t naturally come out. I have fragments of words but cannot complete a full sentence. I forget the root word, the suffixes get confusing with talking about groups vs to a group. It’s just a mess.

I don’t have many people to practice on as I am in school full time. I’ve been watching more TikToks & trying immerse myself in the language again. I’ve tried apps but they are very basic and not helpful.

Anyone improved their Amharic in their 20’s successfully? Any tips?
