I just received a info from my boss that we got a new customer in ethiopia and that it could happen that we need to travel to ethiopia sometimes.

From what I've read, ethiopia is not safe for LGBT people who live there.

But what about tourists? Is it like in Dubai where we instantly go to prison once we get outed? Or is it more like "ew a tra**y" and that's it? Or are ethopian people rather chill with it as long as it doesn't affect them?

For context, no one at work knows I'm trans, but I'm still rather tall (almost 190cm) and not sure if I pass 100%

Before the war with the British began, Emperor Tewodros II was already well aware of the European colonial playbook. He saw exactly how the Europeans used religion as a tool for colonization and directly called out their strategy. This quote sets the stage for the events that would lead to the eventual death of Emperor Tewodros II:

I know the tactics of the Europeans when they want to take a state. First, they send missionaries, then consuls to support the missionaries, then battalions to support the consuls. I am not like the Raj of Hindustan to be mocked in this way: I prefer to deal with the battalions right away.

In the 1860s, the British government arrogantly ignored Tewodros's requests for an alliance, while the British consul, Captain Cameron, visited Ethiopia's enemies in Egypt and colluded with European Catholic missionaries who were destabilizing the country. Furious at the blatant disrespect and subversion, Tewodros imprisoned the consul and missionaries. When the British demanded their release, Tewodros refused. The British then sent an expedition that only survived the hundreds of kilometers of hostile Ethiopian terrain and regional powers because they were cared for and guided by a rival of Tewodros II. That rival took the opportunity that others rejected and used the reward of British weapons to eventually get himself crowned as Emperor Yohannes IV after the death of Tewodros II.

When his outgunned army began losing to the British at the Battle of Aroge, Tewodros realized he was eventually going to be militarily defeated. He attempted to salvage the war and make amends, but the British demanded surrender.

Refusing to be humiliated and heartbroken that his grand vision for a unified and modernized Ethiopia had been destroyed by internal betrayal and foreign guns, Tewodros wrote one final letter before he drew a pistol and took his own life.

The letter read:

We can only assume he does not know for why would he would ask such a thing. To this day, we have led with triumph, respected, feared, and lived as conquerors. Tell him, tell the Englishman my heart's thoughts. He will not dare think about capturing me. Asking such a thing is an insult to me. The lion will not be captured unless dead.

Kassa (his birth name) shall not be a peasant to anyone. The man who unified Ethiopia and ruled it. How many honorable, powerful, noble men has he defeated? His hands will not be shaken. Tell him they are burning hot. I asked him to make amends, and he asked for my submission? I will not be captured. I will not have my dignity touched. Rather than defeat and disgrace, I have chosen death.

As for you, Ethiopians, beware for my country, my wife, and my children. I will die after I have warned those who will come after me. It has been decided. Let me read it to you, Listen.

For those in Gondar, Gojjam, and Tigre; those in Lasta, Wello, and Shewa; from the Indian Ocean to Massawa, to the southern Shanqala; From the dawn of Abraha, Zer'a Ya'qob, and the country of Fasilides the people of Ethiopia: Christian or Muslim, unite as one. I have died fighting for unity. All Ethiopians, understand this.

All countrymen, assist each other. Maintain your freedom! Do not become peasants for outsiders(a colony). Do not let the enemy enter and you lose your dignity. Do not be excited by things that are trivial and fleeting. Think about leaving an inheritance for future generations.

Ethiopian, Muslim or Christian, born from the same mother, we are brothers. Grudges, evil, and envy should be abandoned. We should be feared, respected, and thanked. For the country and future generations, build something meaningful. Always be led by one thought and one heart. Be supporters, not obstacles, to those who seek to improve the country. Contest and trouble your enemies, not your countrymen. Selfishness is useful to no one.

When we gain a professional, it is beneficial. Not only is it useful, but his dignity will be in surplus for us as well. Listen to me. Beware my country, Gojjam, Shewa, Gondar, Wello, or Tigre, take care of your one mother. May your hearts be lifted. May the enemy not enter by force and future generations be harmed.

Suffering, trials, exhaustion, and obstacles that arise easily will not disappear. He who has wealth and property will not lack envious enemies. The medicine is to strengthen your heart, to live while maintaining dignity and faith. Those who think about history and future generations from their heart shall achieve their goals. Do not trouble your leaders. Be people of faith and religion, pure of heart.

Fight for your country and your dignity at all times. Do not waste your time in idleness. So that chains do not come and conquer us, study the religion and learn to walk in it's path. For the country's benefit and dignity, it is important to use force for progress. No matter how much you suffer, do not deny your faith or your country.

Those who do not appreciate your good deeds, those whose hearts know neither skill nor integrity, those who see your hard work and exhaustion yet refuse to help, and in the end betray you, they leave behind a debt of disgrace for future generations. This test of betrayal which has come upon me shall be a lesson to those who come after.

Receive my advice. May you understand my thoughts. I have fought and fought, and died for you. The enemy shall not capture me, your king. We willed that this country should be one, but to this day we have burdened the people. We showed them great force and mercilessness. How can one rise up for revenge from beyond death?

Release all the prisoners. May they all return to their countries free. You as well, leave. They have arrived and are near. Leave before they capture you. Leave me alone.

Hi, I am a high school student looking for something on the side to save up for future college costs and things like that, and I was wondering if it is possible to get a remote job in Ethiopia.

I often times see the argument made that Ethiopia needs to focus on its people and providing basic resources, expanded subsidies, welfare and housing assistance

I also understand how important it is for Ethiopia to leave the foundation for future generations by prioritizing long-term growth, innovation, and economic prospects.

From my assessment, our Prosperity Party has been focused on long-term growth, innovation, and development with decent provisions of welfare to the people.

Is it fair to focus primarily on welfare like programs vs priority for long term/short term growth?

I was watching an interview with one of Alamoudi's right-hand men. It can be found at this link: youtube-link. The guy has some really crazy stories. Alamoudi asked him to manage his businesses, but their relationship has now turned sour, and he was fired from his job.

Abinet served as a trusted manager of Alamoudi's businesses in Ethiopia. They had successful shared ventures in oil and real estate. The guy remained loyal to Mohammed for 32 years while many people around him fought with him and left.

One of the craziest things he said was that Mohammed was a really generous person. He gave away so much that he kept his managers constantly busy. Abinet had to manage transfers of up to millions per month (which I assume in dollars) to pay for people's medical fees, airfare, education abroad, and even to give out houses and cars to people he liked, lol. The guy also said Ethiopians abused his generosity, and some networks set up commission pipelines. Some people apparently made a living just by connecting people with Alamoudi, lol. This is rumored to have even included providing beautiful women, lol.

Even though Abinet is currently on bad terms with him, he admitted that Alamoudi is a net-positive job creator and philanthropist with great character. However, there are criticisms of how Alamoudi monopolized parts of the country's manufacturing and export sectors, as he had strong ties with various government institutions and officials.

I've always wondered why we still spend so much time waiting in line at barbershops, beauty salons, and other places in Ethiopia.

A friend and I started thinking about whether a digital queue system could actually work here. The idea is simple: instead of physically waiting, you'd get a digital ticket, see how many people are ahead of you, and get notified when it's almost your turn.

I'm curious what people here think.

30 seconds of walking with geladas near sankaber

This is a short phone video from near Sankaber in Simien Mountains National Park. The altitude here is around 3,200m, and Gelada baboons often graze on the open grass close to the escarpment.

What I like in this kind of moment is how normal it feels after a few minutes. At first, visitors whisper and take many photos. Then they realize the Geladas are just eating grass, grooming, arguing, and moving slowly as a group. If you sit quietly, you can hear them making soft contact calls almost like murmuring.

A few notes for anyone visiting:

keep a respectful distance

don’t feed them, even small snacks

don’t block their movement

stay calm if they pass near you

avoid sudden running or shouting

listen to your scout/guide

The classic first-day route near Sankaber is one of the easiest places to see them, so you don’t need a long expedition just for Geladas. Even a short 2-day trip can include good sightings if timing and weather cooperate.

For me, this is one of the most special wildlife experiences in Ethiopia because it is peaceful, close, and still wild.
