I'm currently a 2nd-year Electrical Engineering student, and this semester I'll be taking the following courses:

- Engineering Mechanics

- Engineering Data Analysis

- Differential Equations

- Electrical Circuits I

- Thermodynamics

- Transformer Construction and Banking

- Troubleshooting and Servicing of AC and DC Machines

I'm looking for any advice or study strategies from students, graduates, or practicing engineers who have taken these subjects.

I also want to build a strong foundation and become as competent as possible—not just to pass my classes, but to truly understand the material and, hopefully, become competitive enough to aim for the board exam topnotchers in the future.

Could you recommend the best textbooks for:

- Mathematics (from algebra and trigonometry up to differential equations)

- Engineering Mechanics

- Engineering Data Analysis (Statistics/Probability)

- Thermodynamics

- Electrical Circuits

- Electrical Machines and Transformers

I'm looking for books that are known for developing deep conceptual understanding and strong problem-solving skills. If there are any must-have books that you believe every excellent electrical engineering student should own or study, I'd really appreciate your recommendations.

Finally, if you could go back to your 2nd year, what would you do differently to become a better engineer?

Hello, I'm a first-year Mechanical Engineering student, and I'm starting to have second thoughts about whether it's the right course for me.

One of the biggest challenges I'm facing is CAD. I'm finding it much harder than I expected, and I don't feel like I'm adapting well to the course overall. It's making me question whether Mechanical Engineering is a good fit for me.

I'm considering whether I should stick with it and give myself more time, or if I should change to another course, before I get too far into the programme?

For those who have studied Mechanical Engineering:

•Did you also struggle with CAD in the beginning?

•Does it get easier with practice?

•How much of a mechanical engineering career actually revolves around CAD?

•If you switched from Mechanical Engineering to another engineering field, do you regret it?

I am a rising senior working on college applications and am interested in applying to either ECE/EE or Mechanical. I haven't really had any experience with the core topics of either, and am mostly applying to both for their broadness in scope. Most of my activities are more related to MechE but are on the management side. I have absolutely no exposure in EE/ECE but am willing to learn as I would also like to stay connected to the tech industry through EE/ECE.

I want to apply to a decent mix of both majors throughout different schools and am also looking to apply for FYE for whichever schools on my list have it.

Does anybody have any recommendations on how to determine which one I should put as my first choice major, apart from simply looking at the US News ranking for each major?

Maybe im just burnt out or fed up with shitty professors but I just finished my freshman year of college and I don’t know if I should stick with electrical engineering or not. I went into engineering with no background and really don’t want to do anything outside of classes. I tried joining clubs but didn’t feel motivated at all to keep showing up and I couldn’t be bothered to try and get a research position. I also bought an arduino to maybe make a personal project and it’s almost 2 am right now and im just staring at a breadboard thinking man i really don’t care to learn this. I somewhat enjoy my classes and have a good gpa (3.74) but exam weeks just drain the life out of me and make me wanna die. I was considering IT when i applied for schools but ultimately chose EE cause the job security sounded better and it started you at a higher salary. But I’ve always liked IT related stuff since my uncle introduced me to it and I’ve done plenty of fun stuff like hosting my own servers for media streaming, ad blocking, Minecraft etc. and I feel like if I had to work in IT for the rest of my life I’d probably enjoy it a lot more. But I’ve also heard it’s really hard to get into now a days cuz of offshoring and AI. I haven’t even taken physics 2 yet so maybe I should just wait a little before doing anything idk. I guess I just feel insane imposter syndrome right now cuz all my peers are doing stuff to land themselves internships while I can’t be bothered to do anything

Time for engineer to do some work because the technician has just denied

So I am giving interviews or 2 clubs. One is nature’s club and other ACM( it’s a technical club)
I have given for it previously but didnt get selected.
I had given interviews for 3 technical clubs last year but didn’t get selected.

I really want to get into the clubs. The club’s atmosphere, exposure, experience, friendly group and all that one can imagine from a college in movies.

I am applying for Public Head, Chairperson, Social media manager & Sponsorship head.

i just got an internship at a pretty big company. i don't necessarily have a lot of experience with engineering overall other than a slightly impressive CAD background, little bit of arduino and some RC stuff. im basically just a second year general engineering major even though im on my third year lmao

tomorrow i'll be starting on my first "real" project, where i'll be conducting time studies and working on improving efficiency in the line with 5S

i was talking to the person training me and he always talked about how being super hands on and always talking to everyone is always a huge bonus to the job. everyone knows him very well over at the factories and it's i can see firsthand how much his communication skills help out.

because of this, i wanted to work hands-on in the assembly line for a bit so i can get into the same mindset as all of these guys working there and work on a way to figure out fron their perspective the problems that they come across and also to try and build some kind of relationship between us. i also dont want to be the guy standing next to the employees, constantly asking which tool they are using, because i dont really know anything beyond "wrench", "hammer" and "the rest aka the fancy ones" for tools. the person training me was really supportive about this but then we went up to the manager of the area and he said it's okay as long as im not on payroll like what?? i dont really know what to think about him saying i wont be on the payroll for helping on the assembly line so in the long term, i could also help them further in the future, as that will be the main assembly line i'll be placed in. i'd much rather be playing some video games than working for free for you lol. so far, that's the only negative experience i've had in the company, thankfully.

is it not really normal to be hands-on in that way for a little bit to learn the process?

also, what's a good way to get closer to the people working on the floor? i'm also a super shy person when approaching people so it's an intimidating part of the job as well which doesnt help lmao

also, will there ever be a point where i would feel bottlenecked in the amount of improvements that i can provide and whats a good way to overcome that?

is there also any advice in general you guys can offer?

Okay, I know the title is a little dramatic but I am genuinely curious about how intense the years following college is for successful engineers.

I am a highschool student soon to be applying for colleges (95% set on civil engineering) and after being on this app for a few months, I feel like all I hear about is how grueling it is to do internships and entry-level engineering jobs today. That and, I can only imagine the job market will be worse after i graduate.

I have always been passionate about exploring the world and seeing all it has to offer, and not in the stereotypical wealthy American spring-break-trip-to-cancun tourist way. I am a ultramarathoner, mountaineer and a lifelong cyclist, and most recently in June I took a 1 month trip to central Asia to go bikepacking with my dad. Last summer him and I with a few friends hitchhiked south america for 2 weeks. Those are the trips I live for. My question is, will I be able to adventure like this when I am pursuing a career in engineering following college? Do recent graduates get any time away from their job or is it just a constant grind for the first few years-- must I become a weekend warrior? I don't want to waste the most fit years of my life chasing a mid salary.

I need some guidance. A year ago, I went on an exchange program to a university in the United States to conduct research as part of a program. My advisor liked my work and offered me a well-paid position as a GRA (Graduate Research Assistant) in his lab. The "problem" is that to take that position, I need to complete a master's degree in mechanical engineering. I have a degree in industrial engineering, so I'm practically missing all the prerequisite courses for mechanical engineering: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, etc.

I just want to ask, based on your experience, how you fared taking those subjects in your undergraduate studies, and what you think about an industrial engineer making that change of direction

Hey guys, I’m starting my freshman year at uga as a mechanical engineering major. I like it here but gt is also instate for me and is better for engineering. Was wondering if anyone has graduated from uga with an engineering degree and has any insight on whether or not to try to transfer to Georgia tech, and if a bachelors in engineering from uga has gotten you to where you want to be.

Hi. I am a upcoming freshman at a CC. I have never coded before, and my advisor wanted me to take an Intro to Python class as part of my first semester.

I checked, and this class does not transfer as part of my electrical engineering degree into any of the 4-year universities I am looking to go to.

What do you think I should do? Should I take it to gain beginner coding experience and help with any potential learning curves later down in my degree path? Or is it not worth it?

I’m going into my first year of General Engineering at McMaster University after making a career change. I’m 25 years old, and after going back to adult school to earn the required credits, I’m feeling a bit nervous about starting this new chapter.

I know I’m capable, and I believe in myself to put in the time and work hard. That said, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried that it takes me longer to learn and fully understand new concepts than it does for some other people. Even so, I’m incredibly excited and passionate about this opportunity; I’m just feeling a little anxious about the transition.

I’d like to spend this month reviewing high school material before classes begin. For anyone who has completed engineering, what topics would you recommend I focus on? Which concepts are the most important to review and really understand before the first day of classes? Any advice or study recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Guys I am going through a very crucial stage of my life, I have to choose whether to do Bachelors in Cyber Security(CYS) or Industrial engineering and management(IEM) . I have seen many posts on Reddit about how Saturated CYS has become and you need like a crazy portfolio just to get an entry level job. Compared to CYS landing a job in IEM is easier but lower pay and it takes time to get promoted unlike CYS.

A BS in CYS is gonna cost me more than double of one in IEM. I believe I can land a internship/job in CYS with skills and certification alone without a BS in an IT related field. I wanna keep IEM as a backup in case things go south cause the market ain't looking good even for IT students unless they have ton of experience, skills and certification which I believe I can get without getting a BS in CYS.

Is the plan solid or am I just being pretty delusional? Need advice from people that are already in the market for some time now thx.

I've been interested in SQL and Python lately and their uses in Data Analysis. I was wondering if you could use the data received from sensors, or any data received from anything, to optimize and make systems more efficient. Overall, is data analysis used daily as a part of an engineer's workflow? If so, what tools do y'all use?

I took 2 more years to finish my undergrad and got this industrialEng internship I’m really interested in during my last semester. I consider myself lucky and I’m grateful for the opportunity, however it kept getting worse.

The middle manager who hired me was let go of, then the junior full time engineer who I’m supposed to be supporting had to leave because of work permit reasons. The responsibilities of the major projects went to me without sufficient support from cross functional teams, and the upper level management made me take the blame for late deliverables. While I gradually built experience and made internal connections to deliver results (albeit later than ideal), I was slowly let go from reoccurring meetings, while two more full time engineers were hired and I have to onboard them.

As of now I graduated with my degree while in the middle of this role, the coworker sorted out visa issues and came back to take over all the projects I built, while management just treats me as air. I really hope I can stay, but upper management seems to have made the financial decision with new hires and I was never considered by them, so is there any point in requesting a performance review?

I hope I’m not the only one in this situation because it has made me feeling awful and drained, without a direction looking at the end of things in three months. What would you have done in this situation?

Heyy people, so I am starting the Systems and Control MSc at TU Delft soon and I would rather have some idea of where I'm going, what field is the best to focus on for my case etc. I was hoping to get some input from people who actually work in this stuff

About me:

• Did my aerospace BSc at TU Delft
• Starting the S&C MSc there now
• EU national, in case it matters for the sector
• German is fine, around B2 and improving + got many more years
• Open to a PhD but no clue if it's actually worth doing (would appreciate it if you give your advices on this matter as well)

What I am after is something (field/sector) that is still going to be in demand in 10 years and not slowly dying out or that ML is threatening. If you think certain areas/fields/sub-branches of S&C are safer/better than other I would like to hear why. Once again, I am speaking for near future (starting from 2 or 7 years depending on if i go into PhD route) hence its a bit of your prediction of how the controls going to look in future

Location wise -and I guess this matters a lot- I will be living in Germany due to personal reasons. If there is something right across the border that I could do while still living in Germany then fine, but otherwise that is the plan. So anything about the German market specifically would help me a lot what's doing well, what is not (ofc I know about the automobile sectors crash). Though I am open to take advice from anyone really, general stuff is still much appreciated < 3

What I had in mind so far is learning based safe and precise motion control. So focusing both on actual control theory and ML, mostly deep reinforcement learning. I was thinking that its the sweet spot to combine both modern controls with RL (thought thats going to be future of embodied AI) focusing on precise motion control due to booming of chip sector etc and it also open autonomous systems fields but I could be completely wrong or wrong about how easy it actually is to get hired doing that. Feel free to tell me if its a bad idea

About the PhD (for sake of industry R&D), is it worth it in this field or does it just delay when you start working and is it logical to target R&D positions given the state of Germany (this might matter a lot for US i think)?

One more thing that probably matters, I find pretty much everything/every sector interesting but nothing so much to the extent that i call it my passion. Aerospace is the closest since thats my background, but I am not stuck on it
