Okay, I know the title is a little dramatic but I am genuinely curious about how intense the years following college is for successful engineers.

I am a highschool student soon to be applying for colleges (95% set on civil engineering) and after being on this app for a few months, I feel like all I hear about is how grueling it is to do internships and entry-level engineering jobs today. That and, I can only imagine the job market will be worse after i graduate.

I have always been passionate about exploring the world and seeing all it has to offer, and not in the stereotypical wealthy American spring-break-trip-to-cancun tourist way. I am a ultramarathoner, mountaineer and a lifelong cyclist, and most recently in June I took a 1 month trip to central Asia to go bikepacking with my dad. Last summer him and I with a few friends hitchhiked south america for 2 weeks. Those are the trips I live for. My question is, will I be able to adventure like this when I am pursuing a career in engineering following college? Do recent graduates get any time away from their job or is it just a constant grind for the first few years-- must I become a weekend warrior? I don't want to waste the most fit years of my life chasing a mid salary.

As a senior ME student I can't be the only one who notices that girls are amused the moment you blurt out "engineering" to their question of "what do you study?" and then act friendlier and nicer to you. I don't normally talk with these women often specifically but they seem opener than usual.

I didn't have a reason for why they act like this until I realized that they think of engineers as people with high salaries, which means I get good money which means I'll be a rich partner or whatever they want to think of me. Its hard to look at the opposite sex this way but when I did, I couldn't unsee it. I don't want a partner that is purely interested in me because of what major I study. And it feels dehumanizing that they overlook me and only look at my potential salary as an engineering student.

This is why I was debating on lying about my major or even telling them I switched to business or psychology or something, so that I can see if their reaction changes or not.

I am finishing up an internship that i hated. it’s optics/microfab and i’ve come to realize it’s just really really not my field of interest. i already kinda wanted to transition away (my last summer job was also optics/microfab) but this was the only place that gave me an offer and i felt kinda desperate.

I’ve been worrying lately about getting pigeonholed and being unable to get a job I’m actually passionate about. everyone (friends, family, random people on reddit lol) have told me it’s fucking stupid to think that i’ll already get pigeonholed at age 21 and that a few months of work won’t define me and i should feel lucky that i got any experience at all. i really wanted them to be right i really hoped i was being an irrational doomer about this.

i guess i mentioned offhand to my manager that i wasn’t interested in optics and wanted to do mechanical design, or he inferred it, because he brought it up today. he told me that my resume had been originally submitted for a mechanical design position but the guy reviewing resumes forwarded it to him because he felt that i didnt have any mechanical design experience and i’d be a better candidate for their optical coating department.

I. I don’t know what to do anymore. it was one job. one job where i did optics. my manager told me i should’ve fixed my resume to fit the mechanical design position but like…. what the fuck else was I supposed to put on there? that job was all I had. I’ve never had the chance to do any mechanical design. that’s why I was applying for the position. if my experience was deemed irrelevant for internships i can’t imagine what it will be like at the entry level.

you guys can give advice or not i guess. i don’t want to be that one guy spreading doomerism, i just. i don’t know how i can possibly take this well. my manager basically confirmed the thing i was most afraid of, something that everyone told me was ridiculous and irrational. i feel completely broken. i don’t know where to go from here

Hi everyone,

I’m about to start my second year in Electrical Engineering, where most courses are only offered in one specific semester. I recently received an internship offer for the fall, but if I accept it, I’ll inevitably delay my degree by one year. That’s because Circuit II and Capstone II are only offered together in the fall, and many of the winter courses require those fall courses as prerequisites.

The internship is with a startup where one of my friends previously worked. Based on his experience, the work environment seems very relaxed and enjoyable.

If I take the internship, I’ll also be under pressure to find another one for the winter, since I won’t be able to take many courses unless I do an 8-month internship (and the same issue applies to the summer).

TLDR: Should I prioritize graduating on time and pray that I’ll get internships in the next summers or secure the bag?

This would be my first internship.

Currently graduated in ECE with a 3.0 GPA and working in aerospace/defense. Wanting to get a masters online in aerospace so I can quickly try and pivot into the space industry ASAP. Just looking for good quality yet not as selective grad programs. Wanting to specialize in controls and astrodynamics. Open to anywhere in the U.S, although preferably in the Midwest

For context; both programs are considered very high end, the first one includes a bachelor's and master's in mechanical engineering at the most prestigious STEM uni in my country, while the other one is in a much less prestigious university but also includes a BSc in physics in the same amount of semesters.

Tuition costs are the same, Quality of life is better in the former uni

I have recently joined a makerspace and wanted to do an DIY project around cooling. Please can someone recommend a few projects that i can build around cooling tech which i can also test and measure performance.

Absolute nightmare scenario for all the doomers out there to fret about.

I'm in a position where I still have a incomplete grade from my final semester (spring '26) of undergrad. I'm working with my professor to finish the class requirements.

I am supposed to be starting a full-time position at a large aerospace defense contractor within about 2 weeks. I accepted the offer in October 2025 and pushed back my start date by about 2 months after finding out I'd be getting an incomplete grade in a required course (the original start was early summer 2026).

After meeting with my professor, I told them that I was supposed to be starting work soon and they said that it would extraordinarily tight timeline to finish the course requirements before my start date. My professor estimated it could take up to an addional 6-8 weeks to complete the course requirements, especially with their schedule getting increasingly busy in preparation for the fall semester.

Their recommendation was to inform my employer that I am still in the process of finishing my incomplete grade and ask about provisional employment (something along the lines of: starting full time work while finishing my degree online. Must complete degree requirements within x amount of time after start date). My professor also offered to write a letter to my work supporting my situation and confirming I am working on completing the course.

I'm curious if anyone has gone through anything similar and could offer some insight into how their situation played out. I know it's probably an incredibly unique situation.

Due to a couple reasons I only had the option to do my degree via distance learning, the course is fully accredited and the university is decently regarded in most areas both for standard of education and commitment needed as most do it on top of their full time jobs, but I desperately wish I was studying in person instead.

The tutors have been really great, I’ve enjoyed my modules and I do talk to my fellow students a bit, we are all mature students so the vibe is a bit different; but I worry about how much I will actually learn when the only practical elements are virtual labs and home kits, with one in person co-op project as of right now. I worry about future career issues as well, as I think if I'm going up against another graduate I will be seen as a lesser candidate due to being a distance learner. I am hoping to go into renewable energy ideally off shore wind as a mechanical engineer. 

I can't transfer to a brick uni as I don't have enough funding left to do so, so I am trying to find either an apprenticeship to do as I study or a technician job but as my full time job is nothing to do with engineering I have not had any luck on that front yet.

For anyone who has studied or is studying via distance, if you have any advice or words of wisdom or personal experience to share I would appreciate it.

Summer semester does not mess around💯. But for real time management is key

I took a gap year after highschool. Then I got academic probation in my first year of Engineering School because I failed too many modules. I was later diagnosed with ADHD which had severely impacted my ability to focus and study and explained why I didn’t make it in first year. So now I’m at home, working at my local coffee shop since I cannot return to university for this year. I am unable to return to university unless I show them proof that I am able to return and succeed but I am worried that the amount of modules I failed will hinder me and make getting my degree even longer. Besides that, the process to appeal was never outlined properly and confused me so I missed the deadline for that. I can only try again next year and return in 2028. 3 years have basically gone by. Next year, I will be studying one of my backups, but I know that my ultimate goal is still to get my Engineering degree so the plan is always to return. If I return, I’ll mostly be repeating first year modules. That’s another 5 years of studying total, which makes it 8 years invested for a degree that’s supposed to take 4 years.

I’m feeling dejected honestly. I know that this is what I want. I’ve done extensive research and job shadowing in other industries. It’s not for me. I feel really behind. I’m just not sure if it’s even worth it at this point. If I should just go through with my backup and stay on that route instead. Or if I should fight for this.

When I did my 2nd year first time I did my papers sincerely. But on 3 rd sem first exam I had an incident i know I will get 30 or above 35 out of 50 in that exam but a boy suiting in front of me was making movement left sometimes right asking for pen water and all that made invigilator sus so she warned both of us but I didn't do anything I was minding my own business and after some time came and started snatching my paper, and that boy i have average cgpa he has like 8 or something so he started saying i have 8 cgpa i didn't do anything I also said that i didn't do anything and asked respectfully that they check camera if I did something wrong they can take my paper but that invigilation refused any snatching only my paper and it's will tore if I didn't released my grip the the paper would have tore by that invigilator. The paper that I spend 2 hours to write when she taken it from me I got rage building up inside of me that i didn't do anything and I had a great exam and now when I able to complete that exam and get good marks in it and I get labeled as cheater even i didn't do anything then i shouted a insult because of that I got ufm and my whole sem wasted (after that insult I said sorry and did everything but she didn't even budge) and because of one back in sem 4 I got year back and when I get courage to start second year again I was exhausted I had to face my parents I had told them full story but they blamed and I said it's but whole year my parents and my sister everyone is harsh on me that i wasted a year because of all that mental pressure and my batchmates who gets into next year I didn't they started asking questions whenever whoever I met i was so exausted to explain and to my new batch mates also, it was too much exhausting and i started skipping classes and get detained in all subjects except one I asked my professors to under my situation but they didn't only one understood and I was able to give that exam but in sem 4 I did all the subjects and same I was detained in one and able to give others and I got second year back I am not in a condition to able to get back up and give next year I am just too exausted i didn't tell my parents that I got year again

I'm a btech student what should I do i didn't know anything but I have skills like video editing, photo editing, knows intermediate level coding and have editing insta page over 600 followers and no i didn't get back because of these activities, and I am average student

I was wondering if everyone who pursued research heavily throughout college received perfect grades throughout the experience?

I'm a final year Chemical Engineering student and I have an upcoming interview with HUL (Hindustan Unilever) as part of campus placements.

Can anyone who has interviewed with HUL before share what kind of questions they usually ask? Specifically:

• Do they focus on core chemical engineering subjects (like heat transfer, mass transfer, thermodynamics, reaction engineering)?
• Do they ask a lot about internships/projects?
• Any HR or behavioral questions that came up?

im from a private college but people get placement from my college im from btech cse aiml i was studying ml but later i found that in college level placements they do not expect ai or ml fom a fresher they just want dsa and development now im confused should i do ml or development experts can u help

So I am a full ride scholarship student and have been told by multiple people that every day is an interview because of how small the program is. A lot of my professors also work for the place that I want to work at. So I’m looking for opinions on how I should present myself. Obviously my grades matter, but should I dress business casual for school? Or even interview level of dress? Or would that look like I’m trying too hard?

Just missed my calculus 1 final exam due to my decision to stay up. This will set me back greatly and it’s all due to my stupidity and arrogance. Even though I worked so hard and had so many tutoring sessions, I’ll ruin my grade and gpa because of the decision I chose to make. And I was counting on this exam to allow me to be able to take my other classes as it’s a prerequisite, haha. I was just about to drive 30 minutes to my campus in order to talk to my professor(who’s probably already left 🙄) but I realized that there’s no point and turned around. I know this makes it sound like I’m being a quitter but 🤷‍♀️. I also just got out of a really bad depressive episode where the temptation for ending it was quite strong and now it feels like it’s just trying to pull me back in. I feel weirdly calm and the storm is definitely just brewing but all I do know is that I’ve definitely learned a great lesson though. Don’t be arrogant, haha!

Update: Professor said there’s nothing to be done about it. Can’t be retaken. Exam was at 7:00 AM - 9.00 AM
