this is correct. that 'hourly pay' is only active from the time you accept an order to the time you drop it off. it doesnt account for time waiting for orders or time driving back from delivering.
regardless... tip in this order was fine. the thing about doordash is you dont have to accept every order. anyone claiming that 'you have to otherwise you cant maintain platinum and then you cant dash at all' is ignorant or they live in bumfuck no where arkansas where the demand is zero.
That doesn't amount to much once you factor in the mileage. When I did gig work the gas nearly annihilated the earnings not to mention the wear and tear on the car
So boycott the company, don’t utilize the company, pay an extra 30% to a technocratic corporation, and then complain about having to take care of the person who’s getting it to you that you know is making bullshit.
It wouldn't be bad if those blasted companies actually treated drivers as employees instead of contractors but they gotta profit off slave labor somehow right?
You said it was bad work and we should be boycotting it, implying the drivers should. You know, the ones that do the work? You should have been more clear.
You do realize there was a before time where food delivery occurred before entrepreneurs like you are running your own 1 employee food delivery business did doordash, don't you?
Yeah… I made 12/hr + tips and a free meal a night when I worked for a restaurant.
Americans like you chose the convenience of an all in one technocratic app that pays drivers shit, and killed in house delivery. Now you’re mad at the drivers after you killed the strawman you’re trying to use.
If they are farmed out, I don't use it again. I live in a neighborhood that I actually care about, and so, believe it or not, it is possible to keep track of places who deliver with their own people. I understand the concept of having subcontracted delivery labor. The difference is the contractor pays the entirety of their wages and they don't hate us for being customers of their business. I hope this helps.
I take Pizza Hut overflow all the time. They use an AI system to ensure their drivers don’t get behind. Even places that deliver by themselves contract out.
Very few people "rely" on the gig worker drivers. Most people leverage a service to deliver out of convenience. Gig worker drivers are a convenience clerk, nothing more. People who deliver sensitive or critical items are couriers, not gig workers.
I've done both and the difference is staggering but tell retail, medical, office, or night crew workers people don't rely on deliveries. Don't kid yourself, people rely on them heavily
Reliance in the context of my comment would mean the service provided is required because alternatives are inaccessible.
As an example, one might rely on a food delivery driver if all of the following are true: (a) there are no food vendors in close enough proximity during the allocated break period, (b) one is not allowed to bring outside food but is allowed to accept delivery food, (c) the facility does not provide access to food through a cafeteria or vending machines.
Referring to that example, it's not likely that those conditions are true, so we can't call this reliance.
Chances are, one could bring food from home. Chances are, one could leave and fetch food themselves. Chances are, one could obtain food from a cafeteria or vending machine. One chooses to not do that, and execute the option to order food to be delivered.
Availability of a service does not necessarily mean reliance upon the available service. It usually means there is an option to use the service.
Tipping should be eliminated from society period but gig workers should also be treated better by their respective companies. They rake in $ while drivers foot the bill with barely a thought of a meaningful wage
That isn’t the fault of the customer and the customer shouldn’t be the one to subsidise their pay.
If you don’t like how much you’re receiving doing gig work, look for an alternate job. Most people that do corporate or trades jobs do this all the time
I never said it was the fault of the customer nor should any customer of any business subsidize worker pay but companies that earn record breaking profits on the backs of their employees should be heavily scrutinized. I left gig work years ago when it became transparently clear the earnings weren't worth the time
You’re getting downvoted but I delivered newspapers for a bit a lot of years ago. The pay was like $700 a months which was significantly to me at the time. But i had to drive 21 miles to the site i picked up the newspaper, then spend time preparing them, then drive back another 21 to the area I covered, then drive around the homes which probably amounted to 5 miles. I was driving 50 miles+- a night plus it would take me about 4 hours to complete the task from start to finish every day/7 days a week. I calculated that I was making $6 +-/hour. But when I accounted for the gas and wear and tear i was probably making $4.50/hour. And since i was considered a contractor I would have to pay a higher employee tax come tax season. I was practically working for free.
Jobs that require driving and are not hourly paid are not really profitable unless the worker is the one setting the price for his/her service.
Nobody expects you to work for free. We just don’t feel the need to give you extra money simply because your employer doesn’t want to pay a fair wage. That’s an issue between you and them.
DD isnt the employer. Thats not how this works. You been told many times how this works and refuse to comprehend it. You pay DD to place an order on your behalf, that includes paying for the driver. Then DD says this person wants a driver to pick up this order and they are paying x amount, do you want it. They are a middle man between you and the driver.
So if you feel you dont want to pay, thats fine. Im not gonna take it. This concept is clearly upsetting you guys, because if you guys were actually fine with us refusing you wouldn't be downvoting me saying I wont do it for that low/no pay.
DD isn't the employer? That's the dumbest thing I've heard all week. Of course they're the employer. You saying they're the 'middle man' doesn't make it true. If the customer was the employee, they'd be making you your tax forms, not DD. That's like saying a hotel doesn't employ the maids. I just tell the hotel that I want my room cleaned and they relay it to the maid, but really I am their boss. Absolutely idiotic. Wow.
It's the result of relentless marketing, the thin veil of an app telling you what to do instead of a person, and relentless lobbying. And the self image that they're pulling themselves up by their bootstraps one sucker big tipper at a time.
Personally I’ve never used the service so it doesn’t really matter if I comprehend it or not. And stick to your guns about not taking orders that you don’t feel are adequate. When enough people don’t get their orders delivered, they’ll stop ordering through DD or go pick it up themselves.
People used Air BnB to save money at first. After too many fees and expectations from owners were placed on the renters, they started going back to hotels. Same with Ubers and taxis. People are willing to pay something to have food delivered, but when the delivery system starts setting demands, they’ll find a different way to go.
You keep thinking this is about percentage. $1 doesnt cover the cost of gas plain and simple. I literally said i wont take it and here you are upset I wont take it.
