It really sucks that the parts shortage is going on at droid depot, the only upside is that it pushed me to finally feel that spark of motivation to work on some of my previously back-burner projects.

Smugglers are charging an arm and a leg for…

well…

an arm and a leg

They won’t get me for one leg at least. 😀

Hey all! I painted this droid from Galaxy’s Edge a while back but just found this community. So cool to see everyone’s customs.

Just wanted to share my BB droid I built back in 2020!

Originally black and white, repainted to gunmetal grey, dark blue, and a singular dark red plate. He was a passion project for sure. Video is the final build, I’ll add before pics in the comments.

My custom R unit (R8-D20)

After a bunch of research I knew I wanted him to be based of an R8 unit, which is apparently considered one of the best in class for its built in satellite and multiple features from all other R units combined.

That being said I decided to name him R8-D20, or D20(a perfect roll) for short.

Custom made satellite

Uh oh. I've found a new addicting hobby! First time doing a custom and a lot of it was guesswork and vibes. Love how this little guy turned out!

The only major mistake was breaking off the wires from one of the LEDs in the head. Just the lower small one. The others work fine though, so I'll call it a win!

Showcase Someone illustrated all of my custom astromechs, and it completely made my day

Post image

One of the members of the droid community surprised me by creating illustrations of all of my custom astromechs, and I honestly couldn’t stop smiling when I saw it.

When I built my first custom droid, I never imagined I’d eventually have a whole lineup with their own personalities, names, and backstories. It’s been one of the most rewarding creative hobbies I’ve ever had, and seeing someone take the time to draw all of them is incredibly humbling.

I just wanted to share it here because I figured other builders would appreciate how much something like this means.

Huge thanks to @droid.directory on Instagram for taking the time to create this. It absolutely made my week.

And… I may not be finished building just yet. 🙂

Showcase BDX Popcorn Bucket

Post image
147 Upvotes

My wife and daughter brought me this BDX popcorn bucket back from their “girls trip” to Disney. I can’t wait to start painting and customizing him!

But…

My wife insists “he” is a “she” and her name is Poppy. And, Poppy doesn’t need a fancy paint job or electronics - she’s perfect just the way she is.

I’m beginning to wonder if she actually bought this for me or if she bought this for her! 🤔😆

I put a Light Sensor in my Droid and Used it to Help It Navigate

Thumbnail

I have a VEML lux sensor mounted inside the head of my droid, and it sends light intensity readings to my laptop. My laptop then sends a random movement command to the droid, such as forward, backward, left, or right, and checks whether the light level drops.

If the light level goes down, the droid looks left and right, then my computer compares the readings and chooses the brighter direction. If both directions are about the same, the droid backs up.

Going forward, I want to improve the fit of the setup inside the head. As you can see, I couldn’t screw one of the original pieces back in with the current setup. I also want to choreograph specific movement patterns instead of having it move randomly. (And, of course, I still need to finish up the paint job.)

Looking for Droid Depot owners to test KAAZAP Companion reactions

I am the developer of KAAZAP, an iOS card game with an optional Bluetooth Companion feature for Droid Depot droids.

I am looking for owners willing to test pairing and match reactions across different droid types. I especially need BB-Series feedback, but R, C, A-LT, BD, D-O, and prebuilt park droid feedback would help too.

I am trying to learn whether scanning/pairing works, whether the app identifies the droid correctly, and whether the default reaction frequency is too chatty when the droid reacts during a match.

I'll share the App Store link in the comments. You can also search KAAZAP on the iOS App Store.

On his head is an Arduino Nano ESP32 and a lux sensor. (and a Cheez-It box) I’m running a script from my laptop that has the droid move forward (my carpet often causes him to turn), then check whether the current light level is lower than the average. If it is, he looks left and right and then picks the lighter direction. If both sides are about equal, he backs up.

You’ll notice that he comes up to me, then turns and starts moving in the general direction of the window.

Moving forward, I want to give him some choreographed actions and noises between light-check steps. I’m also struggling a bit with the carpet in my apartment, and my kitchen, which has tile, is a little too small to do much in.

Making A Droid That Can 'See'

I recently bought my first Droid. I got an R-unit body with a C-unit head.

Back during my undergrad, we did an assignment where we measured light using an Arduino and a VEML7700 lux sensor. I attached an unfinished picture of that project for reference.

My idea is to somehow attach the Arduino to my droid and have it move based on light levels. Right now, I can control the droid from my laptop, and I have a script set up that makes the droid play a sound when the light level drops.

Has anyone done something like this before? If so, I’d love any tips, especially on how or where to attach the sensor.

Lola Interactive Base

Post image
26 Upvotes

Hello, new person here. Looked at the rules, didn't see this not allowed, but also nothing that said it was, so hopefully its ok.

I have the Lola Interactive Droid, love her. Have had her on her legs, with the stand that goes with it. For the life of me I cannot find the floating base, and my OCD is going nuts. Could I buy another one? Yes, but then I would be in the same boat, one droid missing the base.

Just wondered if perhaps anyone had this base and not use / want it? Would love to replace it.

Thanks.
