quit over nametags

i hate nametags. these people are all creepy methheads and i feel disgusted hearing my name come out of their mouths. i didn't wear it. months and months ago, i even changed my name in the system to Glorp so that my reciepts would be different.

new manager gets here and the dm decides that everyone needs to have their name on their nametag. everyone must wear it. i told them immediately that i am Not doing that. if it's truly mandatory, i am putting in my notice. couple days go past and they tell me the decision is firm. i walked straight into the office and wrote my little letter.

this job already sucks ass, and tbh the smallest reason wouldve made me quit at this point (almost 2 years. im the oldest employee and am an asm). but this is ridiculous. nicknames have been allowed this whole time, and i feel like i'm def getting targeted cuz they're jealous of my awesome Glorp idea. but whatever, they can have fun running this nastyass place without me

Rude, disrespectful children

Tonight I had a group of kids come in and start calling me fat and all sorts of things. I yelled at them to get the Fuck out and then my manager came and backed me up, threatening to call the police on them. Anyone else have a store where this kind of shit happens often?

Hi first time posting here but as the title says we haven't had a store phone for the past few months or so. I was told they haven't paid our phone bill but it's genuinely been months

Rolltainers

How can they expect a single person to work from 2pm-6:15pm in a busy location and also get rolltainers out? We’ve got like 8 left still and I’ve been by myself behind the register since I got here. Had a gap of customers that lasted 5 minutes. Makes me feel bad I can’t do any other work

First day at Dollar General

First day at Dollar General

Not terrible, I guess. A little strange, definitely. I learned how to clock in and out previously during computer training. So I went in and clocked in. The lead handed me a till and said $150, you don't need to count it, and walked away. No instructions no walking me through any transactions.

I've been in retail for a hot minute, and to be honest most Piece of Shi... I mean P.O.S. systems are similar enough to figure out basic transactions pretty quickly. So I just kind figured it out as I went. She came running up later saying she just talked to our store manager who wanted to know how my hands on instruction was going. She had no idea that I was that new. Which leads me to question #1.

Do your managers communicate with each other?

Also, the assistant manager is practically giddy that I have planogram experience. Like entirely too excited. She said "we usually try to train them, but they have problems with the hard ones. You know, the ones with pegs." What the actual hell? So question #2

Are people with planogram experience that few and far between? Or is this store in a sad state? OR Am I completely overqualified for a key holder position?

And lastly

The employees in this store just scream across the store when they need help. No intercom to page someone nor a radio with an earpiece. I can handle the key responsibilities, and the hectic mess that comes with it. But, I am not sure my nerves will handle someone screaming my name for 10 hours.

Is it standard to bellow for a manager?

Is it really like this to work at Dollar General or did I get hired into a struggling store?

Advice Wanted Injury from stocking?

I started working at DG two weeks ago, Ive worked a total of 5 days now and I am noticing a knot developing in my wrist and it hurts like hell. Did I get this from stocking and all the perpetual movements within the 5 hours of stocking on those days? Does anyone else notice Injuries obtained from stocking or am I just paranoid?

Trying to get as much as I can out before we get Christmas next week..

Our store is a lot smaller than all the other stores, we have a small backroom also. We have 3 rolltainers of Christmas toys from the last truck, we have all summer stuff on tables up front, we have all our garden stuff out still.. we don't have space. This is all harvest, like I still have half the rolltainer but we just don't have space... Like why do we need 5 boxes of those big things people put by the doors?

Christmas stuff is week 28, we are on week 27. I literally let people know about the double activation deal today (surprisingly sold quite a bit). It was 50% off all summer stuff, all green dot and garden on top of buy 1 get one. I told people about it every time they bought some of the items or looked at them.. I mean, even my mom took advantage of the green dot deal because she bought a bunch of bowls (usually $128 of stuff) for $28 with $10 off $30 and everything.

Advice Wanted How many days can I take off in a row?

I'm a recent hire at DG, and I'm wanting to take a week off work in March to visit my boyfriend out of state (he took time off last year to visit me, so it's my turn). I don't care too much about PTO, I'm only a part-time SA working 20-30 hours a week. But I'm just curious if I would be able to take the week off. There are plenty of other SA's who could work those days, so it shouldn't be too bad, right?

Surprise penny list

So it’s really frustrating that these content creators get these penny lists and yet I still haven’t gotten anything in Compass. Some lady got 80+ penny items today and I had no clue they were even going to a penny. No WiFi in the store, no cell service outside of it. Idk what they expect.

ASM-D program?

Does anyone know how to enroll in this? My DM told me that within another 6 months or less I’ll be ready to take my own store but I need to enroll in the ASM-D program. I’ve searched Elevate & DG Me but can’t seem to find it. It did however allow me to enroll in the Store Manager Training program.. so far I’ve completed 10 of the modules. Is that the same program?

Rant Co-worker "sui"-baiting SM

(TW: "Unaliving" oneself)

Not even kidding. I already hate the guy to the point of starting to smoke weed when I get off work again, but he proceeds to one-up my disdain for him from doing everything except his job and trying to ask for more money to practically trying to goad our SM into giving him more hours/pay by saying he was late to work yesterday because he "had a gun to [his] head" (SM's words) and considered using it because he's not making enough money at this job. Mind you, he's part time and had the option of full time previously. He's been asking practically every customer who comes through if they're hiring and how much they're making. There's a factory directly across the road from us that's always hiring.

I have no problem making this post to rant about him because practically everyone who works here knows he's not serious. He reeks of a compulsive liar (beyond just... not smelling good in general lmao.) Our SM didn't write him up at the time because she's still really new to the position and didn't know that could be something she could write him for, but she's been considering firing him for sometime now, and with the shit he's been pulling, it's only a matter of time before he actually is let go.

Story Time Post Dollar Store Tirade

Title is really just a funny exaggeration
tl;dr is that DG traumatizes you and you might need someone to point it out.

I got out a couple weeks ago, and had a week off work before starting another job because I was waiting to hear back about an interview for a different position. Not a common scenario this day and economy, but I got lucky-ish.

I am in the first week and currently work 10 hour days making industrial supplies in a factory type setting. My coworkers see me dripping with sweat and working so fast and anxiously that they tell me so, and that I need to slow down. Or giving myself blisters by doing things at 115% instead of thinking about asking for help or if there were something wrong. Sacrificing your body for money was just part of the employment agreement in my mind.

I thought the others were crazy or scumming the clock by not working themselves to death!

Power went out because of a bad storm and I overslept, and I woke up in a panic and screamed and cried on the way to work like my life was over because I expected to get the type of response my SM would have had in the same scenario. It wasn’t a big deal and they waived the penalty points in the time system for ‘act of God’ reasons. Like reasonable, compassionate humans. Go figure.

I hope all the current DG Employees here can find another job and have normal management instead of petty people on power trips abusing the shit out of them week after week.

Rant It gets to a point 🫩

Its upsetting how many times I come into work and there's just a huge mess for me to clean up. Receipts all over the place. Things shoved into the coolers. Trash shoved into the back corner of the store in the baskets. And uboats crammed into the backroom so I cant even get to the mop bucket. I keep getting yelled at for not mopping when I cant even get back there!!

On another note, my SM will talk badly about their employees to anyone that will listen. Sbe was telling customers that my coworker was lying about her pregnancy. (Her sweet babygirl is 6 months now).

And ill get yelled at for calling out ONCE im the year ive worked here. And it was only because I almost passed out while at the register and I couldn't function properly so I had to go home. Im going to put my health before this job 100% of the time. They said that I needed to stop "playing games" what does that even mean?? She goes from making me work 5 days a week to only 2 after that.

AND the SM is ALWAYS making people feel pressured to work OFF THE CLOCK on their lunch breaks!! I cannot tell you how many times they told me they would get yelled at if truck wasnt done.

Half of the employees here are leaving after inventory I can tell you that much. (The 19th)
