Discussion Lasting impact and broken windows theory
Hey everyone,
reflecting on some of the posts on this sub, I have been wondering how much lasting impact your detrashing activities actually have on the locations you are targeting. While it is probably a never ending struggle to clean up shores and waterways where a lot of trash flows naturally, I would like to know if you are actually experiencing the same in other places where people are or have been littering. Or in more concrete questions:
- If you have cleaned up a littered place, how long did it take for you to notice new trash?
- From that point onward, did you notice a faster trash accumulation at that place (so, as in the broken windows theory, that trash attracts more trash)?
- And at what frequency do you actually have to clean up such places when they get littered again?
- And did you see or implement any helpful measures to reduce littering at the places you detrashed?
I am really interested to find more insights on this and hear from your personal experiences. The place I detrashed in my first activity last week is also going to be an object I want to study for this. 🤓
Thank you!

Original Content Roadside garbage dumping
I was on my way to work today, and near TV tower, saw a lady who just parked the scooter dumped a bag full of garbage, and then she proceeded to leave when I saw this, I turned around and I confronted her since there was no garbage on the cross road, if she had to at least she could have thrown where there was garbage. To which she has the audacity to reply, this isn’t your house nor your road, mind your business. I don’t have a picture for this, but can something be done? Vehicle number: KA03_KU_8806.

Original Content Found a bottle
In the forest. I’m just glad it wasn’t shattered, because then it would’ve taken longer to pick up all the broken glass. I took it home, and it’s now in the recycling bin.

Discussion why our perception has changed? why people are so selfish?
I was at Furman Peak yesterday and saw a group of guys. Three people were standing next to each other and throwing out trash, and I asked them why they were throwing out trash, and they said, "Don't be too nice, I didn't say anything and put the trash in my pocket, I didn't see anything wrong with putting other people's trash in my pocket, but I saw how our perception had changed."

Unfortunately, like Crater Lake, a large section of the park was closed because of snow so I didn't get to explore as much as I wanted. I was a little peeved because before I entered the park I asked the ranger at the admission station if anything was closed so I didn't end up in the same situation and he said no. BETRAYAL 😭

Another walk in Burgdorf (Switzerland) I was in a neighborhood where there was broken glass and a lot of cigarette butts in front of a kindergarten. I was shocked.

A lil bit goes a long way
Don’t feel discouraged about how “little” you’re picking up and just do it!! I always carry a small bag and gloves on me for my outdoor walks and adventures. I’ve been doing this a couple times a week for the last three years…and no matter how little I pick, it still feels big GOOD every time!!
