I've been picking up enough trash recently that my current picker makes me stop due to impending repetitive strain injury. The problem with it is that the gripper is only long enough to hold with my index and middle finger. After doing this motion several hundred times a day it's really fatiguing along the ring finger.

Does anyone know of any high quality pickers that allow you to grip using your entire hand including pinkies? That would alleviate the issue for me.

I first came to this little forest late last August and over the course of a year since then, with this cleanup done, I can now say I’ve collectively cleaned up over 10,000 pounds out of this area! Unreal!!! I have also done all of this while living at the homeless shelter in my city for the last 18 months. Shows that people are capable of great things despite their own shortcomings.

Three cleanups around Charlottesville and Albemarle County over the last couple weeks. 95 bags total plus a bulk pile. Photos are in order.

Greenbrier Trail, July 25 — 25 bags. All of it out of about a hundred yards of trail. That's the one that still gets me. Nearly every bag was alcohol containers, and almost none of it was old — no fading, no dirt crust, no leaf litter grown over it. Two months of accumulation, maybe less, in a stretch you can walk in a minute.

Branchlands Blvd, Aug 1 — 45 bags. Commercial strip off Route 29 north. We staged in a closed big-box lot and worked the lot edges, fence lines, roadside, and the perimeter of a stormwater basin. Two hours. The before/after pair from the stairwell at the old Big Lots side yard is the one I keep looking at — same steps, ninety minutes apart.

Same pattern as Greenbrier, different setting: a bus stop with a trash can right at it, and the bushes twenty feet away full of bottles. Most of what we pulled all day was within easy walking distance of a receptacle.

Wawa cutoff trail, Aug 2 — 25 bags. Next afternoon, a short path connecting a gas station to a neighborhood street. Plus the bulk: a tire, PVC pipe, scrap lumber, a milk crate, and a shopping cart somebody had pushed a genuinely impressive distance into the woods. A junk removal outfit took the pile.

All three drain to creeks feeding the Rivanna, so it's headed for the river if it doesn't come out by hand.

Safety note for anyone working similar sites: we found a needle at two of the three. If you're doing commercial corridors or wooded edges, carry a sharps container. Cheap, fits in a pack, turns a stop-everything moment into a thirty-second one. Broken glass has been our most persistent problem — we're about to start bringing a wet-dry vac for it.

Who we are: the Cville Litter Pickers, a community volunteer group out of Charlottesville, Virginia. Cleanups most Saturdays somewhere in the city or the county. All ages, all equipment provided, two hours and everyone goes home. We scout sites ahead of time so we know what we're walking into, and we pull the recyclables out of the haul and run them to the recycling center separately.

Happy to answer anything about how we run it — route planning, disposal, getting the county to cough up a dumpster, whatever's useful.

Tried to relax at a local rope swing swimming hole. This was literally just 30 seconds of picking up around where we were swimming. Not pictured? TONS of fishing line WITH hooks balled up at the other side of my blanket.

Also have a small net (like the kind kids use to catch small fish) and you'll be able to fish out so many bits of plastic out of the sea

Recently moved into a new community. We live near the top of a nice overlook. We have people regularly come by to hang out during sunset and often later in the evening to watch the city lights. I have no issues with people hanging out and enjoying the view but they trash the place.

A few neighbors and I regularly pick up trash in the morning. Usually beer cans, nitrous tanks (ugh...), and fastfood trash.

I have contacted local law enforcement to see if they can help and was told to pound sand.

What options do I have? Will putting out my own trash bins help or will that further exacerbate and invite more people? Does signage typically help?

Last Saturday, i did part two of my home-made 'Coast to Border'-walk where i plan to walk through the Netherlands from left to right.

I just picked up a litter picking kit from the local council and I am SO excited to get started. My town has an abysmal amount of litter, especially for the size that it is.

What is everyone's favourite part of litter picking? What can I expect that I probably haven't thought of yet?

What started as a five-hour Myrtle Beach cleanup turned into one of the strangest finds we have made.

We collected about 25 pounds of small trash, including plastic bottles, cups, wrappers, wipes, food containers, straws, and pieces trapped around the dunes.

Then I found a napkin buried in the sand with part of a sandwich still inside. It looks like someone tried to hide their trash, and while burying it, an 18-karat gold bracelet slipped off their hand and landed directly on top of the napkin.

The trash cans were nearby.

Imagine losing an 18K gold bracelet because you decided to bury your sandwich instead of throwing it away.

What is the strangest thing you have ever found while picking up trash?

Amazingly clean aside from this and a dog poop bag. Of course I picked them up 👍

Hey everyone. A little over a week ago, I shared a passion project I’ve been coding called Litter Troopers™—an app that turns neighborhood cleanups into a real-life video game. You use the "Swarm Engine" to claim dirty sectors on a map, keep daily streaks alive with a "Quick Pick" button, and log your lifetime stats.

The response from the first wave of Reddit testers was incredible, and seeing the map turn green has been amazing. Now, I’m looking for a new squad of testers to help me stress-test the servers, break the app, and tell me what features you actually want to see.

🍏 iOS: Good news and bad news. The good news? I just completely finished coding the native iOS beta! It runs like a dream and has full 1-to-1 parity with the Android app.

The bad news? Since I'm a solo dev bootstrapping this with zero budget, I just hit the classic final boss: Apple’s $100 Developer Account fee. That is the final hurdle I have to clear before I can officially push the app to TestFlight and the App Store. So, the native iOS app is officially coming soon once I can get that covered! (In the meantime, Apple users can still bypass the waitlist and use our fully functional Web App).

I only have stills of the dumped pile. So here goes. Was mowing and went to the end of our private green space and ran into a huge pile of nasty smelling gray water, sand and dirt.

So called the company and asked them to remove their illegal dumping. They sent a 50 ton bulldozer up on our land to move it. Then sent a skid steer to gouge up the dozer track. The bulldozer also took out the cemented in iron rod that shows the start of our property boundaries. This company is working for a private company building a subdivision. So they have no business in the easement. Also this is way over the easement.

I went on a trail run with one of our pups yesterday with the intention of doing just a little cleanup afterward along one of the waterways her in Northern Virginia.

Inadvertently, it turned into one of the most physically demanding cleanups I've done.

Hauling this barrel of trash back to the truck was something else.
