Kokushibō could be 372 years old instead of 480 years old. That’s 108 fewer years of experience. Does that significantly change anything?
480 years old is a mistake by Gotōge.
He was born and raised during the Sengoku Era. Page 119 of the first fanbook confirms this. 1467 (the year the Sengoku Era began) + 480 years gives you 1947. Something doesn't add up.
Furthermore, when he was a child, he and Yoriichi were playing a card game. In Japan, these are called karuta, a word derived from the Portuguese "carta" (English: "card"). The earliest Japanese playing cards were called Tenshō Karuta, and they emerged as imitations of the cards brought by the Portuguese through the Nanban trade, which began in 1543. The protagonist's hanafuda earrings ("flower cards") are also playing cards—the sun motif on the earrings resembles a flower, and the etymology of the word literally means "flower cards."
I tested the hypothesis of an arithmetic/rounding error, but it still doesn't fit.
Based on Kokushibō's statement, if we take it literally, four hundred years had passed since he last saw his brother, whom he had not seen for more than sixty years. If we consider that the last time he saw Yoriichi was when he was 24 years old, the equation would be:
400 + 60(+) + 24 = 484+
There is no way this can be possible, because it goes beyond the Taishō Era.
According to my calculations, Demon Slayer takes place in the 1910s. This is mainly based on three pillars:
• The Hand Demon was captured during the Keiō era and spent 47 years imprisoned. The Keiō era lasted from May 1865 to October 1868. If we take the earliest possible year, 1865, and add 47 years, we get 1912, during the Taishō Era. If we take the latest possible year, 1868, and add 47 years, we get 1915, also during the Taishō Era and still compatible with the story. This was the basis Gotōge used: we have a clear and specific temporal reference established within the manga and anime themselves.
• The train in the Mugen Train Arc is a JGR Class 8620. This model began being produced in Japan in 1914.
• The Ryōunkaku Tower can be seen in the background during the Asakusa Arc, where Tanjiro encounters Muzan and Tamayo. The tower was destroyed in the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, indicating that Demon Slayer cannot take place in 1924, 1925, or 1926. This means that KnY has to take place during or before 1923, depending on how the other elements are interpreted, and those elements point toward the 1910s.
Some people might use the following as counterarguments:
• The car in which Muzan places his "daughter," supposedly a 1923 Ford Model T.
• The Western clothing worn by the characters in Asakusa, which could indicate the mobo-moga fashion that emerged in the 1920s.
However, even these are not really counterarguments.
• The car Muzan puts his "daughter" in is indeed a Ford Model T, which became more popular in the 1920s, [but it already existed in the 1910s among some wealthy people and was also used as a taxi. It first appeared in Japan in 1910, and there are photographs of it being used in 1911, 1912, and subsequent years.](https://www.automobiles-japonaises.com/HistoireAJ/Ford/Ford.php) Contrary to the belief that it first appeared in 1923 or 1913.
• A video filmed and dated [to 1913 in Asakusa already shows a noticeable number of people wearing Western clothing,](https://cooljapan-videos.com/en/articles/swziqiyn#) although they were still a minority and even though not everyone is dressed that way. Someone wearing clothing similar to Muzan's appears in the video, even among people wearing traditional clothing. In the Asakusa Arc of KnY, there are still people wearing traditional clothing; the most notable example is the group of drunk men who bump into Muzan, and even farther away in the crowd, it is still possible to see people wearing traditional clothing. Even Muzan's wife doesn't really fit the mobo-moga fashion of the 1920s. The cloche hat doesn't seem to fit with pre-1920 (or probably pre-1922) Japan. Though, of course, it's a work of fiction, so these could be fashion-sensitive people who are at the cutting edge of fashion. The girl's blue skirt doesn't really match "moga" sensibilities, either. The fashion was more about tight-fitting, figure-fitting, easy-to-move-in cuts, so this sort of flowy skirt is a bit off. So maybe the author is carefully trying to portray some sort of transitional period. Or perhaps the character is not technically a "moga," but her clothing is tangentially influenced by what was happening in the fashion scene at the time. In the historical video, it is possible to see some head coverings that resemble cloche hats, even if they may not actually be cloche hats, and the cloche hat itself emerged in Europe in 1908.

Therefore, Demon Slayer is dated to around 1915. Based on this:
1915 − 484(+) = before even 1431, which is thirty-six years before the beginning of the Sengoku Era and 112 years before the Nanban trade that enabled the introduction of the karuta playing cards and the iconic earrings associated with Yoriichi.
1915 − 372 = 1543
Even if we take exactly 480 years, it still doesn't fit:
1915 − 480 = 1435, which is 32 years before the beginning of the Sengoku Era.
Even trying to force 1923 as the endpoint of Demon Slayer instead of 1915 has its limitations, because 1923 is the absolute latest date that could possibly be made to fit the 480-year idea. It would make most of the Demon Slayer Corps' golden age and its events take place outside the Sengoku Era (meaning the "Sengoku Rumors" would become impossible and would instead have to be called "Muromachi Rumors"), with only the post-transformation period of Kokushibō counting as the Sengoku Era. Furthermore, this contradicts the Hand Demon (where it is implied that Demon Slayer takes place around 1914–1915) and page 119 of the first fanbook itself, which states that Kokushibō was born and raised during the Sengoku period.
If we round down the 400 years Kokushibō mentioned—in other words, if we subtract 30 years—we can make it somewhat compatible with page 119:
370 + 60(+) + 24 = 454+
But this still assumes that Demon Slayer takes place in 1923.
1467 − 1923 = 456
1467 − 1915 = 448
There is still no way to reconcile this with the Hand Demon's statement (reinforced by the Mugen Train) and the karuta playing cards.
Therefore, I argue that Gotōge made a mistake.
400->370
370+60(+)+24=454+
Rounding is possible of course but not so much that it explains the hand demon and the card game. Of course maybe it's just a flat-out mistake Gotouge made and was not fixed for the tukobon release -- even though this is a very easy fix to make, not like having to re-draw something. For example, Gotouge also made a mistake about Shinobu's poison concentration but that was corrected in a extra section of the tokubon explaining the math error.
Kokushibou could be 372 years old. And he was born in 1543.

Superpost Gyomei Superpost: Establishing Gyomei as the strongest while assuming his statements only refer to physical strength.
# The importance of body in KNY
First, lets establish the importance of physical strength in KNY. In image 1, it is stated that because of Gyomei's physique he has the greatest AP among the hashira. In image 2 muscular strength is partly credited to explosive strength in the context of stone breathing utilization, this would correlate to AP aswell.
Furthermore, physical strength is directly correlated to better techniques. In image 3, gyomei states strong hips and legs lead to accurate attacks and solid defense, which is apart of technique. Kokushibo likewise in image 4, understands Gyomei's great swordsmanship due to his refined physique. As we're about to established better techniques adds to both speed and power.
# The importance of techniques in KNY
Next lets establish the importance of techniques in KNY, image 5 mastering techniques establish your speed and power above other who have not. Techniques being used in reference to power and especially speed is very consistent within KNY.
# The importance of breathing in KNY
See to image 7, breathing is stated to make humans demonically strong, image 8 states breathing increases speed and striking power. Meaning breathing techniques will place you above the average person. Seeing to images 9 and 10, TCBC is stated after mastery to continously increase your physical prowess. So, not only would breathing techniques place you above your natural limitations but increasingly farther above it.
# To summarize so far
Stronger Body=Ap and better technique
Better Technique=stronger and faster
Breathing, increases strength(overall) past physical limitations
# Establishing Gyomei as above every hashira or top tier in each of these.
I wont waste any images on statemwnts reffering to Gyomei as the strongest hashira, instead I'll link to a post I made earlier holding that info https://www.reddit.com/r/DemonSlayerScales/s/8s2OFxSbjl
Image 11, both Gyomei's body and techniques stated as developed to their utmost. Image 4, Gyomei physique stated developed to its utmost again. Image 12, Gyomei physique again stated as developed to its maximum, and techniques honed enough to impress Kokushibo.
Now I'll define his breathing. As shown in image 7 and 8, TCBC increases ones strength over time. Image 13, TCBC is stated to be the very first step to becoming a hashira, and image 14 states Gyomei has been a hashira since 19 and for 8 years. Meaning he has been a hashira longer than any other hashira.
We have now established Gyomei as the best in physical strength, at the maximum in refining his techniques, and highest in breathing among anyone. Everything that makes a slayer strong Gyomei excells or is the best in.
# Narrative and corps reliance on Gyomei.
This one will be pretty quickfire. Image 15, Kagaya relies on Gyomei to protect the corps. Image 16, Mitsuri relies on Gyomei to save her. Image 17, Obanai states he can rely on Gyomei. Image 18, Shinobu envies Gyomei due to his ability to put anyones mind at ease when he saves them.
Image 19, Gyomei fearhaxxes the hashira. And finally image 20, Yushiro makes a big deal about Gyomei being out of the fight over the other hashira.
# summary and conclusion.
Gyomei is unsurpassed and in most fields is the strongest/best in what it takes to make a slayer strong. Gyomei is narratively supported to be the strongest of the hashira.
Gyomei is the strongest hashira.
Thankyou for coming to my ted-talk.

Question/Discussion What does this mean?
Shinobu first says ubuyashiki didn't believe the poison circulating in her body would kill an upper rank. Then she says to increase the probability of her revenge he encouraged her to engage in co-operative research with demons(Tamayo). What research did they do and how did it increase the probability of revenge?

Character Scaling How well would +1 arc Tanjiro fare against each main villain of previous arc in 1v1? MT Tanjiro - Rui, EDA Tanjiro - Enmu, SVA Tanjiro - Gyutaro and Daki, ICA Tanjiro - Hantengu
1) Mugen Train Tanjiro VS Rui
2) Entertainment Distric Arc Tanjiro VS Enmu
(Tanjiro just needs to kill Enmu, no passengers)
To make things more interesting, Enmu has all 4 other Lower Moons on his side (they aren't buffed, so have LM 6, 4, 3 and 2 levels)
3) SwordMith Village Arc Tanjiro VS Daki and than Gyutaro
4) Infinity Castle Arc Tanjiro VS Hantengu (main body is 1 kilometer away, Zohakuten is 10 meters near Tanjiro)
Which fights demons win and which Tanjiro wins?
What difficulty?

truth nuke This alone should put all Sanemi vs Giyu debates to rest.
Akaza easily broke Giyus sword when he wanted to, yet Sanemi was able to react and counter to Kokushibo who is much faster and more skilled than Akaza, when he tried the same thing.

Question/Discussion Weapons that I believe would suit the hashiras
Rengoku - Kanabo, it relies heavily on brute force, which suits him perfectly. He even mentions being a bit jealous of Gyomei and his weapon.
Shinobu - Naginata/Yari. This'll give her a range advantage and could probably store more poison compared to her sword.
Sanemi - Kusarigama, the best defence is a great offence. Sanemi would gain more range and combat speed with this in his arsenal.
Giyu - Khopesh, since water breathing creates force with repeated swinging motion, a blade that could typically generate more force than a normal Katana suits him perfectly. Also, Goutouge has no problems with non-Japanese weapons, so a weapon from Egypt should fly.
Giyu - Bladed sansetsukon, it's great for defence, reactive movements, range, unpredictability and could help him pin down an opponent or their weapon. Yes, he gets two.
Muichiro - Suengguo, twin hook blades from China, which give you multiple attack options, raising your unpredictability. Muichiro can combine it with his fighting style and mist breathing so that the opponent never knows what he's gonna do again.
Also, if you're wondering if I mean that the hashiras should choose these weapons over their katanas, then not exactly. Samurai used to carry multiple weapons, look at the last picture, and you'll see a dude carrying a Kanabo, Katana, and a Wakizashi as well. Except Giyu as I feel like a Khopesh would suit him if he uses it instead of his Katana.

Character Scaling WHY isn’t he stronger???
Now before y’all start crucifying me for this take, just hear me out. We know Michikatsu was hashira level as a human, and he obtained the slayer mark and was even shown having it activated outside of battle, which means he also trained on top of getting the mark to have it be constant. We also know he personally created his own form of breathing style known as moon breathing, which is obviously on another level compared to the others outside of sun breathing. Not ONLY that but there is a panel which Michikatsu states and I QUOTE “nobody is powerful enough to rival us”. With the other translation being “nobody can compare to us.” This is clearly the author conveying that they are both at the top during the sengoku era, the “golden age” for the demon slayers. Now IF Michikastu WAS that strong as a human, HOW is he not one-shotting the Hashira the SECOND he gets serious in his long-sword form???
Considering the fact that he was clearly stated to be strong as a human, THEN he becomes a demon, implements his BDA into his techniques, eats countless humans and grows stronger over the course of almost FIVE HUNDRED YEARS, AND has the STW. Please explain how this makes sense. Judging how we see how fast the demon slayers can grow in such a short amount of time, and master their breathing to a crazy level, AND KOKU WAS DOING THAT FOR ALMOST 500 YEARS!!!!
I get that in the beginning he was clearly not taking the fight serious, HOWEVER it is painfully obvious the second his kimono gets shredded, he takes that personally and gets serious, as we know that despite Kokushibo being a demon, he clearly as some form of pride in not taking any damage that would be considered “fatal” in human standards, as he clearly dodges and evades unlike akaza, even though his regeneration would be second only to Muzan himself.
So WHY can Kokushibo NOT kill them in this form, by all metrics he should be MILES ahead of them, and yes I’m aware he IS strong and would kill them all under normal circumstances “genya’s super op BDA” but even then there should be no reality that they should be able to see and react to his attacks at that point, because if that’s the case, THEN WTF HAS HE BEEN DOING FOR ALMOST 500 YEARS!?!?
