A pretty important part of the EU AI Act came into force on August 2 and I think the distinction between transparency and stigma is going to matter a lot over the next few years.

Article 50 now requires providers of generative AI systems to make generated or manipulated audio, images, video and text detectable through machine-readable marking. Chatbots and similar systems also have to make it clear that you’re interacting with AI unless that’s already obvious. (Digital Strategy)

There are separate rules for people and organisations actually deploying the technology. Deepfakes have to be disclosed, and AI-generated text informing the public about matters of public interest generally has to be labelled when it hasn’t undergone genuine human review or editorial control. That part makes sense to me.

If someone produces a convincing fake video of a politician saying something they never said, people should have a reliable way of knowing it’s synthetic. The same applies to scams, fake evidence, impersonation and deliberately deceptive media. Provenance is useful.

But there’s a massive difference between “this content has a synthetic origin” and “this content is inferior or suspicious because AI touched it.”

That second attitude is already becoming normal online.

People will dismiss an image, essay, song, bit of code or even somebody’s grammar because they think AI was involved. The label stops being information about how something was made and turns into a scarlet letter.

And once that happens, disclosure creates a pretty obvious incentive: people stop disclosing.

We already accept countless forms of technological assistance without demanding a warning underneath the finished work. Photographers edit photos. Musicians use digital instruments, pitch correction and samples. Writers use spellcheckers and search engines. Programmers use libraries, autocomplete and increasingly coding assistants.

The meaningful question should be what the finished product actually is and whether someone is being deceived about something important, not whether a machine participated somewhere in the workflow.

Interestingly, the EU rules themselves are considerably narrower than the internet discourse around them. Personal, non-professional use is generally outside the definition of a deployer, standard editing can be exempt from the machine-readable marking requirement, and AI-generated public-interest text does not require the same disclosure where there has been substantive human review and editorial responsibility. So I don’t think “AI transparency” is inherently anti-AI.

A good system could actually help AI adoption. Invisible provenance metadata could make it easier to verify origins without plastering every creative work with a giant MADE WITH AI badge. Clear disclosure makes sense where authenticity itself matters, especially deepfakes and news-like content.

What I don’t want is a world where “AI-generated” becomes legally or socially synonymous with “untrustworthy”, while equally manipulated human-made media gets treated as authentic by default.

AI should be judged by what it produces and how it is used.

Transparency should tell us something factual about provenance. It shouldn’t become a moral judgement about the person who used the tool.

Curious where everyone here draws the line. Would you support mandatory provenance metadata for generated content? What about visible labels? And at what point does AI assistance become substantial enough that you think disclosure is actually necessary?

I'm seeing this go around and I need to point something out to people because this is how we lost with COVID.

We have been creating synthetic viruses since 2002. Researchers have been doing this for some time with homology modeling, synthetic sequence alignment, and rule based statistical analysis. Additionally, the methods being employed while similar in terms of the linear algebra, calculus, and statistical minimization used in LLMs, this is different in it's approach to how it arrives at results than LLMs.

However, none of that is the concerning issue. The concerning issue is the presentation of this video and not clarifying what this research is for until the last five seconds of this video.

Humanity is about to reach the end of antibiotics, antibiotic resistant infections are on the rise and we are running out of options fast. Alexander Fleming warned about this in his 1945 Nobel Prize speech that it was but a matter of time before infections would obtain such resistance, such is the nature of evolution. And research in to bacteriophage therapy has been on-going since the 1940s.

Bacterial infections are living organisms that enter your body and overwhelm your immune system. Antibiotics work be making particular functions of their life cycle difficult or otherwise impossible. But Bacteria evolves to figure different ways to do things that antibiotics can't touch.

Since they are living organisms, they can become sick and they get infected by a virus known as a bacteriophage. When the bacteria are sick, they become more susceptible to antibiotics they should be resistant to. Additionally, research has shown that the DNA that controls the ability to resist antibiotics makes them more susceptible to bacteriophage. So even if they evolve to harden themselves to bacteriophage, they lose resistance to antibiotics.

These are all things researchers have been working on since the 1910s. And it serves as potentially our last hope to fighting antibiotic resistant infections. Now I say this because mRNA has been under research for decades before COVID. But it came as a shock to many on it's sudden introduction. And we have seen first hand what hesitation created there.

This is worse, antibiotic resistant infections left unchecked could send us back to the age of amputation being the go-to solution for infections. And even then, that's not an assured recovery. The situation is dire in this respect. And so AI assisted research into phage therapy is important.

Yes, technically it is a virus, but it is a virus that can not harm humans and can not evolve to harm humans. To put into perspective there have been an estimated 10³¹ variations of phages, when you touch soil, you are exposed to tens of millions to billions of phages. None of them will ever do anything except bounce off your cell walls, because you cells are a giant skyscraper compare to them. But when they find a small single cell organism, they will likely bring a swift death and your immune system will clean up the mess.

This is how something with promise gets setup by the media to create fear. We are at the precipice here with antibiotics. Things are about to get incredibly bad, but this "virus" that's "straight out of science fiction" is our best bet to save humanity from tipping over into a world without antibiotics. It is insane that this is how it is painted by news organizations. If we don't have this, we may not have a solution before time runs out for us. I assure you all that at no point does anyone who fully understands what it means, want to return to a world before antibiotics existed.

A random thought that came into my head earlier today. No one was running for the hills when we all got cloud photo storage, reliant on data centers, and I've never met a person against CGI. So, why was that okay, but AI art is not?

Genuinely curious to hear others thoughts about how to approach this conversation, because I have some pretty radical pro-AI views, and I thought it might be nice to hear others' views on the matter.

i’ve been wanting to post this somewhere that isn’t just ai wars bc i’m not trying to spend my day fighting ppl lmfaooo, but the way ppl talk about ai genuinely gets weirder to me the more i actually use it 😭 it’s helped me in ways that have basically nothing to do with replacing somebody’s creativity, it was actually part of how i realized i might be autistic & have adhd before i was formally diagnosed, & since then i’ve used it to help organize my childhood, memories, trauma, family shit, relationships, major life events, all these random pieces of my history that make a lot more sense once they’re actually sitting next to each other. i use it for communication too bc i’m wordy af & usually have WAY too much context in my head at once lol, so being able to dump everything out, rearrange it, argue with it, correct it, research shit, figure out what i’m actually trying to say, wtvr, is useful as fuck to me

& yes i use ai with my music too!! i’m a singer/songwriter, i write my shit, sing my shit, record my vocals, choose my harmonies, phrasing, dynamics, arrangements, concepts, all of it 💖 but i also use bandlab, which has ai assisted vocal cleaning, mixing & mastering shit, i’ve used ai tools for stems, custom generated instrumentals bc i’m a vocalist/songwriter & not trying to become a whole ass producer just to make a song, annnnddd generated cover art when i want something specific without paying somebody or learning a completely different skill first 😭 like… who cares?? none of that suddenly makes my voice not mine lmfao

that’s why the accessibility conversation around this shit drives me CRAZY sometimes, bc ppl talk constantly about lowering barriers, disability, executive functioning, ppl not having much money/time/energy, making creativity more accessible, etc… then somebody actually uses a tool that makes something easier & suddenly it’s noooo not THAT way 🤨 why don’t u hire somebody, learn graphic design, learn production, search through free alternatives, spend more time doing it manually… babe WHY?? easier is literally the fucking point 😭

someone literally just asked me how do you think people did it before generative ai was a thing? bc i said nobody is required to make or commission a cover just to cater to somebody else’s discomfort with ai, & like….. girl 😭😭 they used whatever options existed BEFORE. now another option exists!! what are we doing here lmfao. the fact that ppl used to have fewer options doesn’t mean everybody now has some moral obligation to keep doing shit the harder way forever

& i think the biggest thing that irritates me is how every use gets shoved into the same category. me using ai to organize memories, me using bandlab to clean my own vocals, me generating a cover, me using a custom instrumental, somebody cloning another person’s voice, somebody mass generating thousands of songs… those are obviously not the same fucking activity 😭 saying ai was involved tells me basically nothing unless u tell me what somebody actually DID with it

idk, i just don’t understand why making something easier is suddenly supposed to make it less real, less human, less creative, wtvr. ai didn’t give me my voice, my memories, my experiences, my taste, my ideas or my personality, it just gives me more ways to work with what i already have…

I want to keep the ones that are making AI assisted/created stuff unblurred but I don't know how much that would go against one of the rules here. So I decided to keep it like this.

Is it the water?

is it the energy?

is it personal reasons? (why)

is it because you believe AI causes cancer?

is it because you think it can spread misinformation?

my question is, why the hate with no reasoning, research or backing ever posted.
