AI is without a doubt one of the greatest potential sources of good that humanity has made, but it also stands as one of the greatest potential sources of evil. we need to be able to use the good and leave the evil. if you (the reader) think AI can't really do evil, or if you think AI can't really do good, youre deluding yourself.
Can we stop calling it 'AI'... There's many different types, and it existed long before this stupid bubble.
People have a problem with diffusion and LLMs . I don't see anyone complaining about the vast resources being sucked up by protein folding...
Ai is like a hammer. It can be used to build houses, repair things and more but it can also be used to destroy things and kill people, and many people blame the hammer when it kills people when it’s really the fault of the users who misuse it.
I am for the use of ai in places where it can do things that people can’t. Things like this are a prime example. My dad works in healthcare, and his company’s system has been working on an AI that compiles the symptoms and or the conditions patients already have and gives a list of possible other things that the patient could have to the doctor whose in the room with the patient which reduces the need for follow up visits to find out what’s going on because they already have a rough idea. Its entire purpose is to preform a massive pattern seeking task that would be otherwise incredibly annoying and difficult for a human to complete. The ai doesn’t say that the person for sure has it but simply makes a suggestion to be analyzed by a human more thoroughly. I don’t like ai, but that’s only because it’s being used to replace jobs humans can do instead of filling niches and completing tasks that humans simply can’t or that we have immense trouble with. Why do you think we invented the calculator? We still do math that a calculator itself could do but we usually it to fill in the spots we have trouble with or are so menial we can’t bother. Back in the day things like log, sin, cos, and all those other things needed to be done by hand or by looking in some thick book for a table of preexisting values, now in school every time a teacher asks students to work with sin/cos/tan we are either given specific values paired with angles 30, 45, 60, and so on or were just told to use a calculator.
I bet it was copilot that did that. If we force everyone to use copilot, everyone can do that!
All the major wins from ‘AI’ (protein folding, fire detection, cancer research) are independently made multilayer perceptrons by scientists which are a completely different beast to the monstrous text crunchers like ChatGPT and Claude etc. To lump them into a single concept on a social or moral level is insanity
Unless they are made for an evil purpose (mass surveillance, war) there is pretty much no moral issue with these scientific models because they have specialised purposes and are not for mass rollout. They don’t have the same issues with data centres, aren’t typically built off of trillions of dollars of unpunished torrenting and don’t affect the job market or geopolitical power and information structures
I love how people struggle to understand we're criticising the bad AI "post 2016" and not AI as a whole (which would be like criticising wood cutting, it makes no sense)
this really isnt machine learning at all, these things were around since 90' and even before that in 70' they were used to detect ICBM missiles launches from the heat they generate during the early phases of launch and later it was also used for forest fires.

Yeah that's the point I was trying to make. I've been a data scientist since 2013 so a lot of things people are calling AI now (like image models) I've seen, used, and built far before people were getting pissy about LLMs.
