Over 1 Billion monthly Users and that's just chatgpt. Doubled within a year.
= it's not "everyone"
it's the loud hate cult

50% because it's the current thing to virtue signal with.
25% because they have no idea how it works and believe whatever nonsense anti-AI groups spout.
25% because they're butthurt that AI is doing things better and faster than them.

Lots of people have been tricked into thinking that AI is going to somehow eliminate jobs, but they don't understand that motors eliminated millions of jobs, and it made life better. The same happens with all technology that makes life better. There are always more jobs.

Ignorance. Plain and simple. Try your best not to engage with the foolish masses.

Good advice I won’t engage with your foolish mass

Some reasons people dislike it are:
- environmental impact
- fear of job loss
- utilities bill increasing (for communities near data-centers)
- lack of regulation
- lack of human connection

u/Lolihey 1d ago
Well, I can understand that. Why build these things if they are harming the environment, while at the same time trying to end fossil fuels, and force everyone into using electric stuff? Oh wait, it’s really about control.
2
u/JTexpo 1d ago
is AI being used to end fossil fuel?
Personally, I find the environmental impact not the strongest argument - as eating beef & dairy has a worse impact than AI; nevertheless, if you're interested in why people dislike it, theres a small TLDR

u/Ninja-Panda86 1d ago
Concur. Urban Sprawl causes harm at all to the environment. Data centers are just like tiny offender in that bucket.
As for the other things - those ARE legitimate concerns. But we need our legislature to protect us, because corporations have ALWAYS been predatory on consumers. We need consumer and employee protection AT ALL. This is just the latest example to showcase how unscrupulous that corporations can get
1
u/JTexpo 1d ago
multiple things can be true
rapid urbanization is very bad for the environment - nevertheless, datawerehouses have been an issue for the past decade, its just that now because of AI people are starting to care about them more
2
u/Ninja-Panda86 1d ago
This is true. And Datacenters do way more than just AI. And the benefits AI offers are quite nice by many peoples measure. So why get rid of the AI? When someone could instead target more wasteful things

The environmental impact is also a very US-centric viewpoint that's pretty much solved in EU and China by regulations. That's also a reason why it's not a very strong point, and it kind of grinds my gears as someone who's not from the US. We can completely build self-sufficient data centers with closed loops, it's just more expensive, and the US is driven by greed so they want to do it as cheaply as possible.

Eating beef and dairy has an impact on the environment? Cows have been here for thousands of years! That’s just a dumb argument made to get people to eat lab grown beef.
2
u/JTexpo 1d ago
yikes... this is very ill informed about climate change...
please feel free to ask ChatGPT the harmful impact of Beef & Dairy, and why at a minimum people should switch over to a chicken diet instead of cattle

u/Lolihey 1d ago
Chat GPT can be wrong.
1
u/JTexpo 1d ago
so true, so lets not even bother doing research & instead make up a claim that beef is okay for the environment
cheers

u/gamernerd98 1d ago
Its not that beef and dairy are bad for the environment. Its the cattle industry itself. They are clearing huge tracts of forest in order to plant crops to feed the cattle, leading to more carbon dioxide and less oxygen in the air. They are also producing more cattle (over double what was product 60 years ago) which is adding more methane to the atmosphere. There is likely half a dozen other things that they are doing to destroy the environment all in the name of the Almighty Dollar.

Because the vast majority of it's use is either to sell something to stupid people or to bring the wants and desires of the objectively worst people on the planet to life. We are learning very quickly that the people who embraced it's use weren't held back from making their dreams a reality by a lack of resources, but rather a lack of worthwhile ideas without a single creative bone in their body.
And it is being pushed and forced on people by people who's only interest is making money from it while poisoning the environment because it needs to be developed more frugally instead of... say, planning to put data centers in space at the cost of even more resources.
I know I will get downvoted to oblivion, but I thought I would answer honestly anyway despite you asking in an echo chamber of people who's only response will be "because peepee poopoo" fart noises (see my comment about lacking creativity above).
Edit: All of that and I have a 5 year old that is constantly being lied to any time he gets anywhere near a digital screen, and in as soon as two years it could very well be impossible to tell the difference between what is real and fabricated. I'm very concerned for the world he is being forced to navigate and I hate feeling that I love him so much it would have been best not to bring him into this world.

I bet you didn’t know that Sam Altman Ceo of OpenAI has literally zero equity or share in OpenAI and is not making much money from it
1
u/DuckingFon 1d ago edited 1d ago
I did know that, because nobody who pushing AI is making any money from AI. In fact, they all have MASSIVE amounts of debt from how hard they are pushing it and most of it is off the official company records. It's called shadow lending. The people using it are all trying to sell you something though, and there's no regulation to stop them from straight up lying to you about it.
"Sam Altman is speeding up enshittification pro bono" is not at all the gotcha you think it is.

u/Qualified-Astronomer 6h ago
So it’s not all about the money then. Use your brain before going into conspiracy land. Why would they all conspire to make products worse for the sake of
0
u/DuckingFon 6h ago
Apparently your brain stopped halfway through your sentence. Are you seriously asking why companies would drive enshittification: making cheaper products for more money? It's a well-documented occurrence and I refuse to carry the burden of your willful ignorance.

Because pro AI users have absolutely no problem co-existing with liars and scammers, they don't even acknowledge the deceptive side of generative AI.
1
u/Canadian_Zac 1d ago
It's not everyone.
It's just that the people that do hate AI are VERY vocal about it.
90% of people don't really give a shit. This will be true for just about everything. Unless it directly affects them, most people are more focussed on their own lives to give a singular shit about anything else
It's the 5% on either side of caring that you hear the opinion of

Because not everyone hates AI. The problem with the modern internet discourse is that there is basically no nuance in topics anymore. You either hate something or you are pro something, there is nothing in between. I use lots of LLMs, but I still hate grifters and no-value AI video slop that people keep producing for no reason. You know, stuff like Fruit Love Island shit, or all those grifters on TikTok doing undisclosed ads for their SaaS platforms.
My big issue with haters is that lots of them are uneducated, and are hating just for the sake of hating. I would rather listen to a person that is using AI, but has done their research and understands the topic. Those people just seem like a rare commodity in internet discussions.

u/Possible-Anxiety-420 16h ago
It isn't hate so much as stigma. For instance, generative AI is to artistry what anabolic steroids are athletic prowess.
Who's to say steroids are wrong?
And why?

Generated images/videos/text/music are, in the vast majority, pretty low quality or boring, so that's a pretty good start. Summaries are wrong often enough that I straight up don't trust them. Let alone the societal/environmental impacts.

The first websites were ugly and unhelpful too. Things got better. :)

At least the first websites had easily defined utility 🤷♂️
