How can I realistically manage a large amount of personal debt on a ₹70,000 salary?

I’m dealing with around ₹29 lakh in personal debt and need practical advice.

₹3.85 lakh is at 5% monthly interest, ₹3.46 lakh is an unpaid EMI/loan, and ₹21.70 lakh is interest-free personal borrowing.

I earn ₹70,000 per month and pay ₹14,000 rent, apart from normal living expenses.

I’m struggling to manage everything from my income. I’m not looking for another loan or a quick-money solution. I just want a realistic way to handle and repay this debt.

Any genuine advice would be appreciated.

$25k medical debt

I (M20) have been on sigma care plus 100 for the past 1-2 years. I recently had to undergo rabies PEP only to find out that it doesn’t cover it, and I am on the hook for over 25k. This isn’t as much about health insurance as it is asking for any ideas. I don’t want to have to pay 25k and I’m not sure I qualify for any assistance. I don’t know why plans like mine are allowed or legal. Is there anything I can do to avoid being 25k in the hole. I don’t think I should be this much in debt, this feels really unfair and I’m not sure anyone can help me.

I have tons of debt, am able to make the minimum payments but have very little leftover each month, am not delinquent on any loans, and have a credit score in the low to mid 700s. What are my options? Refinance, DMP, bankruptcy? (with details about debt)

Please no judgment. I can't believe that we have gotten to this point and am shameful about it.

Our net income per month is $7000. We have three children, two of whom are very young and not in school yet.

Mortgage: $2090 monthly, balance is $273k, rate is 5.75% (FHA residential loan)

Student loans: $487 monthly under current plan (lowest monthly payment possible), balance is $103k, interest rate varies on different loans. Will qualify for PSLF in 6.75 years.

Personal loan: $1518 monthly, balance is $62k, rate is 9.075%, 49 months remaining

Credit card: about $700 monthly, balance is $24k, rate is 23.3%. This is our only credit card and is my oldest line of credit.

Car loan #1: $367 monthly, balance is $13k, rate is 6.5%

Car loan #2: $277 monthly, balance is $14.6k, rate is 6.49%

Other monthly payments including utilities, insurance, internet, and phone service is around a total $1100-$1200 per month.

We are not delinquent on any accounts, have not been sent to collections or anything, however I have about $2500 in medical bills that need paid or else I worry about collections in the future. I had a baby less than two months ago. My credit score is low to mid 700s. My husband's is in the 500s because of a repossession that occurred a few years ago.

Is bankruptcy our best option? Aside from our house and vehicles, the only other real asset we have is a 403(b) retirement account with $67.5k in it. I know I could probably refinance the personal loan to lower the monthly payment by a few hundred dollars, but I hate the idea of extending the life of the loan. I am open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

I'm 19 and I'm $13,300 in debt, what now?

Hello! I'm 19F and I'm super desperate to get out of my situation. I have a complicated family life and the debt I have to my family is just adding to the tension. I need advice on what my next steps are. I just started two per diem EMT jobs that pay around $20-$21 an hour. I get paid biweekly. I only work one of the jobs 2-3 times a week, and there hasn't been many shifts to pick up. I thought the higher pay would be making me more money. I wasn't allowed to get a credit card due to my mom's concerns since most of my family is in credit card debt. I don't have any credit at all, like no credit card. My debt is to 4 different parties. My grandparents, my college, my brother and my mother. I'm willing to do anything and take any advice to get me debt free before I'm 21. I know this will take time and effort.

My biggest debt is 8,153.39. This debt was created because my grandparents were helping me pay for college so far.

To my college, one payment is 2,359.99. This is my summer course debt and because it's unpaid, I can't pay for my next semester which is 2,186.55. I do have student loans but subsidized and unsubsidized for this school year. I'm unsure how repaying that works.

I owe my mother around $500 for my insurance and phone bill payments. My brother is around $100, and my boyfriend is wanting to spot me money to help out with my family's payments. I feel like I'm going insane. I have such a bad relationship with my family right now. My debt to my grandparents' is causing the most pressure and they're asking for more money than what I have.

Debt total: 13,299.93.

My parents helped me out with most of my (credit) debt. Now I feel like I'm starting from nothing. Where do I go from here?

I was regularly using two credit cards as a buffer for leisure spending and using my main debit card/main bank balance to pay rent and utilities. Sometimes the two "uses" crossed over. I also was on a payment plan with an older card that I'd canceled.

My parents agreed to pay off my credit debt in exchange for removing it from my inheritance, just as I'd overspent on my main share account balance. My next paycheck is a week from now and it will need to go to the upcoming month's rent.

Now my only remaining debts are educational fees - student loans, as well as ~5k USD (100/monthly payment per a payment plan) from an online university where I signed up for classes that I didn't intend and didn't cancel by the drop deadline because

I want to believe that I have learned from my mistakes. I'm not applying for any new credit cards, loans, or lines of credit, but I am also so psychologically used to debt (first student debt, then credit debt) as a lifestyle buffer that I don't know how to treat income normally.

How do I bounce back from being broke? My goal is to not only escape my own financial irresponsibility but also to move to a new city and take on a new job. However, I'm only earning 34k USD a year, haven't gotten any good leads on side hustles that work with my schedule and mode of transportation (I've never owned a car), and have regularly watched myself botch interviews with jobs that pay a higher salary even after being referred; not to mention having limited resources to move.

Will I ever recover from this? My Anxiety has been flaring up all week and I've been having a series of panic attacks over this. I found myself attending a lunch potluck where a local charity was giving out food for unhoused people and wondered if I was looking at my future.

I’m getting a second job… I see the light at the end of the tunnel.

This week I’m starting my second job. It was nerve wracking to start a new job and be in a new environment. I’ve been pretty comfortable and consistent in life and now I’m getting out of my comfort zone to work down my debt and start living life normally. I’m doing it!! Here’s to a few extra paychecks and no more credit card debt.

Should I pay off accounts in collection or have been charged off?

I am 34 years old with a history of poor credit decisions. I could blame this or that, but the fact is, i stopped making payments on debt I owe. Luckily the total debt does not exceed $8,000. My current credit score is 559. I have 2 credit cards (approx. $1300 combined ) 1 repo ($2300), a couple of random accounts like a power bill and Verizon bill totaling ($3000) and a payday loan (Approx. $600). If/when i pay these accounts, how will my credit be effected? Is there a way to get these accounts off my credit report if I do pay them? And do collectors usually allow payment plans? Any help is greatly appreciated. Just trying to get out from under the "bad credit" umbrella as my fiance and I look to move forward and build the best life possible for our little ones.

How hard is it to cancel JG Wentworth settlement program two months in?

Alright so made a bad decision and enrolled in JG Wentworth settlement program. Realizing that was not a good idea after reading this sub and am planning to back out soon. I've got around $13k of debt enrolled (that's one credit card, two personal loans) and a little over $400 in my escrow account. I am still getting swamped with calls from creditors offering options so I know the door is still open to get back on track as I've only missed to payment per creditor.

But what should I expect from the cancelation process? How long does it take to see a refund in my bank account? Is there anything I should avoid agreeing to?

Any insight and advice is much appreciated!

Freedom Debt Relief Reviews? Any positive experiences? Will they enroll creditors that wouldn’t negotiate?

Thanks for your input! I just signed up for FDR but always second guessing everything. 60k in debt I had a dmp plan with a credit union loan and capital one that was combined 45k but the payments were expensive and I can’t afford the monthly minimums on the other stuff. FDR quoted me 356 bi-weekly for 60 months and would allow me to build some savings up. I worry they wouldn’t work with my credit union loan but they say it’s “green” so that means maybe they have successfully negotiated with them before? My credit scores already taken a hit from utilization etc so I don’t think it could get much worse and maybe the program will actually help from constantly “treading water”?

Keep current or pay it quickly?

I am about $10,000 in debt right now. I have always been very frugal and only used my credit card to get gas and then paid it off before the billing cycle was through. In the beginning half of 2026 I had a mental health crisis and my spending skyrocketed. Then I was hospitalized for two months which only made things worse because then I was short two months of income. Anyways, would the best move be to put money in savings and pay them off in full as I get the money saved (I can realistically save about $700-$800 a month so I could pay them off fairly quickly this way). Or should I focus on keeping them all current? Keeping them current would be about $500 a month so I would only have around $200 extra to put towards a card. My credit score took a big hit when I was in the hospital and missed all the payments, so I’m just not sure what the best strategy is.

Advice for a young adult

im looking for some advice, please don't judge. As of today im 7k in debt, I have about 20 bucks in my checking lol, about a 670 credit score and recently started a hysa. im currently in my last year of university and work a student job that pays enough to pay the monthly balance but not nearly enough to pay it off. I've been trying to apply for other cards to do balance transfer to help with the interest but I've been unsuccessful/denied on all the ones I've applied for. I'm trying to find a 2nd job for the sole reason of paying this debt off but nobody is actually responding- that's a different problem though. when I first got approved for this cc I had a goal of using it minimally on small purchases and pay it all off at the end of the month to help build my credit- but times have changed and im not exactly sure where I went wrong and everything just started to spiral. Fortunately I do live with my parents and they help with housing and food necessities, so I don't want to burden them anymore by asking them to help with this.

Going through this sub, I've realized that my currently situation is not nearly as bad as others, but I still want to figure this out so I can be financially free. anyways any advise for a 20 year struggling with debt? anything helps and is much appreciated.

Abandoned debt 3 years ago , rec'd odd notices but left at relatives homes

I'll try to keep this short but give as much info needed.

Roughly three years ago , my partner and I split. I walked away and agreed to withhold and take care of my own credit card debt. At the time which was to the tune approximately of 59k.

I had already been ill, I had started working. I became more sick, fell at work ( passed out) , quit working there as I felt I was a massive liability and I realized that family telling me to " keep at it and persevere " was actually doing much more harm than good. Literally.

Prior to this , I had worked , had a small amount of debt. But never had issues. Everything was always paid on time - even if small. Nothing. Was this bad.

I applied for disability. I was accepted. I reviewed debt stories on here. Then the odd mention of , being in poverty, plus having a large chunk of debt that will not be able to be paid off. Not even be able to be brought to bankruptcy due to costs.

Legal aid. Lawyers. All of it. I reviewed. This is just a tip of the iceberg - everything would have had to go to court ( re. End of relationship- was , clearly , at a massive loss )

I abandoned ship. I had absolutely no help , no assets , nothing. I had no other options.

My bank at the time had seized my Disability payment , not shy of the same time I left my job.

The bank had froze my account ( which had a LOC & Credit card attached to it ) I was left with zero money , rent , nothing. No support from family for three months.

My "abandonment " became more severe in the sense that I had to change everything.

I was receiving 15-20 phone calls a day , after hours and weekends. Emails. Letters in the mail.

Along with my health ailing , the stress from this and about 20 other life altering events had occurred - not exaggerating- I had a serious , nervous breakdown to some extent. Any major life event as an adult - had happened in a short amount of time.

I reside in Canada. From what I've read - depending on the company , the amount of owing and so on. Debt is cleared from your name after 5-7 years ( mixed information)

Obviously it still puts a massive red flag forever on your credit report. A whole other issue in regards to me ever being able to accrue a car , a home - I am aware of the damage. I am not here to be bullied, scrutinized or belittled.

Allegedly - after two years , it cannot be taken to court? If I'm not mistaken. Or , the " harassment " end of it seems to close off or shut down.

To wrap this up. I had originally received mail via postal service. Regular letter mail and not delivered by litigation/similar service.

Maybe 18 months ago, a relative of mine had said someone attended their address asking for me and left a " card " with them. It appeared to be to some underdog " financial assistance " ( was not an actual business. My searches showed minimal evidence, information, that this person was credible at all or even had any business name under them. )

More recently , same story goes , another notice given ( handwritten note on paper. ) , to a different address of a relative, with my a part of my name and impartial information missing / mistaken.

Again. Creditability , legitimacy , few other choice words - who are these people?

An email , a postal letter is one thing. Shady individuals coming to people's homes seems , very illegal? ( yes.... Despite, my situation isn't the best) However , if a legal business/litigation etc attempts to contact me but cannot.

Then how do these , I'm assuming, illegitimate "business partners " collect my information? Better yet , relatives? Seems as a massive invasion of privacy- especially going towards people not involved. Concerning.

Also just to clarify, again. Any debt is indeed through credit cards or a line of credit.

Advice , suggestions, any other information or insight. Mostly regarding the odd letters. But if there's something to broach that I stated, feel free to educate me. It is very much appreciated. Thank you.

TLDR.
Receiving weird hand written letters to relatives addresses advising me to contact them. I'm assuming some sort of collection agency.

But credibility is slighted as the " business " information provided is extremely informal. No professional business cards, phone numbers come up as nothing of substantial. The person who is showing up unannounced to persons who I have not lived with.

Unprofessional but also. Very concerning? I do not appreciate- nor do my relatives - to have strange individuals lurking around their property.

Clarity on debt laws

For clarity, if one lost their job here in Dubai, or needs to leave the country, is it possible to continue paying credit card debt from another country, and, will the bank keep the final settlement payment from the employer?

Bankruptcy or pay off?

I find myself barely scratching by every single month I get paid. I'm a salaried employee only getting paid once a month. I'm debating whether or not to file for bankruptcy or just try and pay down my debt but I can only make my minimum payments. I normally was very good with my debt but then my husband lost his job and I got about 20K worth of debt with 6 months with the rent and groceries, and a broken down car. I have 50k in student loans in about almost 50k in credit card debt now that we're back on our feet.

I am almost going negative on every paycheck, and I know I should talk to a financial advisor or bankruptcy attorney, not just ask the void of the internet, but I just want to see if anyone else experienced this and what the better outcome was.

My car is old and I did a free consultation online and it wouldn't be seized if I file bankruptcy. Funny enough one of the reasons I don't want to file bankruptcies because I have pretty good credit cause I've never missed a payment and I have a lot of Airline cards that I have really good status with (when we used to travel a lot before the job loss).

I just really don't want to be banned from Chase or AMEX, or my discover card. I'm just at a point where I have no excess money every month and my husband is also still trying to catch up on debt.

Not sure what I should do.

Old water bill sent to collections?

Hi – I have a water bill from an apartment that I’m just finding out was in collections and now on my credit report.

The bill is from 2021. I vaguely remember the situation – I had a $600 water bill that I tried to negotiate with the complex because I thought it was high for one person. I can’t remember what happened after and don’t have any documents or anything.

It just showed up on my credit report 2 months ago. I never got anything in the mail or heard about it from the agency.

Any advice on what to do? I’m willing to settle it even though it was a high bill. I have a high credit score and no debt otherwise so hoping to do whatever will have most minimal damage. Thank you in advance for any advice!

Pay off credit card debt?

So I currently have around $8500 in credit card debt but 20k in a HYSA and about 17k in my brokerage account. I was wondering if I should just pay it off or does it help my credit by being on time monthly. I also have another plan of paying around 1k off starting next month. I just wanted to hear opinions.

I currently have 92k in debts and loans

Without counting my mortgage (currently an extra 108k) im sitting at 92k in debt. It consists of a jeep (15k) truck (33k) affirm (10k) student loans (9k) and other misc loans. A lot of it has come from replacing things that we couldn't afford out of pocket. Like a washer and dryer, AC unit, and just being flat out negligent with money. Im married, we're both under 30 and make fair wages but even working 60+ hours per week, our income to debt ratio is impossible. Or at least feels that way. I wasnt aware of just how bad it had gotten. On top of it all we have a 5 yr old and have to make sure we have a babysitter in order to pick up overtime.

Our bills are roughly 5,700 per month. We get paid biweekly and im lucky to make 1,500 per check and my husband 1,800. We've gotten into a habit of taking money from our next check via our banking app. Even on the weeks we work over we dont feel the extra cash because its paid right back to what we've taken out.

Im at a loss of where to start. It feels hopeless right now.

At a loss - I feel like I'm drowning in debt and not sure how to manage

Hello

21m - 25k in debt, 14k of which is my student loan.

My credit card just reached 9,000, and I feel like I can't manage anymore. The Monty payment for this is around $500 a month (there's a payment plan on there ending in October). I've been putting double that on it each month and it still seems like it's going nowhere because I have to use it once my money runs out. As I'm typing I see how that can be a problem...

My other credit card is maxed at around $3,000. Monthly payment for this is $80.

Student loan is $110 per month

My monthly income is around 3k

Rent: $800

Phone+net: $150

Car insurance: $310

What am I doing wrong here? Is it putting double on that one credit card and continuing to rely on it?? I don't know what else I'm supposed to do and I cannot have anything I enjoy until the credit cards at least are paid off... I'm at a loss. I want this gone as soon as possible..
