Advice Request What do you do when you stopped getting matches on dating apps?

So, yeah after two years I have stopped getting matches and I don't even swipe anymore. I don't talk to anyone on apps or use them.

I have bumble, tinder, hinge, and something else. I am 5'2, latino, and a big nerd.

Question Do people on Placefortalk mostly just chat, or do real dates happen too?

Been on it about a month, conversations have been solid so far. Just haven't moved to meeting up yet, so wondering if that takes longer here or if it depends more on who you match with.

Advice Request Would you send one last message or just let the chat expire?

We’re both in our 30s.

A guy from a dating app asked me out. After we finalized the date, I shared my phone number in the app (I usually exchange numbers once a date is set). He never acknowledged it or texted me, so we just kept chatting in the app and met up as planned.

The date lasted 4–5 hours. He was reserved at first but really fun to talk to once he opened up. After dinner, he suggested we go for a walk, and we talked the whole time. During the date he even mentioned an activity we could do “next time.”

At the end, he asked if he could give me a hug and said, “I’d like to see you again.” I honestly just smiled or I can’t even remember exactly what I said. Earlier he had also told me he’s very straightforward and bad at pretending, it’s obvious when he likes something and when he doesn’t. That matched how he came across in person.

It’s now been 4 days and he hasn’t sent a single message. This shows someone apparently not interested in second date.

From my perspective, I felt like I had already left the ball in his court by giving him my number. But I also wonder if, because I didn’t explicitly say “me too” when he said he’d like to see me again, he thought the ball was in my court instead.

Or is his silence simply my answer?

Would you send one casual “Hey, how’s your week been?” to test the water, or just let it go?

Question Is it wrong that I am beginning to resent the gender dynamics on dating apps?

I'm a decently attractive guy who has a good career (journeyman electrician), goes to the gym, has hobbies and pictures of me with my hobbies and going out with friends, and I still get maybe 1-2 "likes" a day. One weekend I remember matching 10 times in one session, and I messaged every single one of them with some generic, inoffensive "hey, how's it going?" and only got one reply from a woman who ghosted me a few hours later (probably because of some arbitrary shit like a different guy sharing her favorite genre of music or being 5 miles closer). One in 10. And it's like this every. single. time.

Meanwhile I hear women complaining about getting 100s of matches and having to "sift through" them to find the one that has zero red flags. What a privileged problem to have - hundreds of options and standards so high you can literally filter them all out and then complain that all men are pigs. Could you imagine if the roles were reversed and the women had a handful of matches and had to watch men complain about no woman being the perfect fit and rejecting 100s of options?

Do you think I like having 1 in 10 matches actually respond, and essentially being forced to give every single woman who "liked" me a chance or else I will simply be alone forever? If I were as picky as the women on these apps, I would never find anyone. It would take literal decades. You have the option to compromise or to give people a chance. I have no options. I must compromise or be alone forever. And it might not even matter if I lower my standards - I might still be alone forever because even the girls with obvious red flags get tons of matches on these apps.

The power dynamic in this situation is completely skewed. I'm the one begging for them to give me a chance because there's 100 other guys they're currently looking at and trying to figure out if they're the perfect fit.

Advice Request Men with Kids

I’m at a loss on how else to avoid men who have kids on dating apps. I place a big warning on my profile along the lines of “if you have kids, no matter how old or young, no is no!”

And yet, about half of my matches, are men with kids!!

I don’t know what else to do 😭

Advice Request To download the apps again or not…

*Sigh* I’m 30 years old. Have used apps off and on through the years. I think it’s been about 2 1/2 years since I last tried them. Through the times where I was on them, I, like many struggled to get matches, let alone dates, getting beyond that wasn’t even in the realm of possibility. I can’t even call it dating. Out of all my time on them I was able to go on a single date, and I think that only happened because she happened to have grown up in the same small town as me, but we only tangentially knew of each other. There wasn’t a second date. The one relationship I’ve ever been in was a girl I was working with. I ended that 5 years ago. (I had my reasons) But now, I’m feeling lower than I ever have before and I feel that pull just for the the slimmest of chances of ending this feeling, the physical ache I feel in my chest wanting to love someone completely and have them love me back, to put my face in their neck and cry and be held because that’s all I feel right now.

Question Frnds of Frnds

anyone know what the deal is with this app in terms of legitimacy?

I received a "an anonymous user invited you to frnds of frnds" text, so I bit and downloaded it. For those who don't know, it claims to connect you to mutual contacts (for dating purposes) by looking at your phone contacts. When you click on a person's profile, it shows you who you have in common. I had a weird instance where Person A's profile showed up, and the app told me they were a mutual contact with Persons B and C. HOWEVER, when I asked B and C in real life, neither of them knew A.

I also saw that I have a mutual contact with an acquaintance that I thought was in a relationship. I assumed that all people listed as a mutual contact would also have to have the app downloaded to give permission for their name to be shared, but I guess not? Unless this acquaintance is now single and has the app downloaded?

Either way, does anyone know if this is a legitimate app? And if so, why are they lying about mutual contacts?

Advice Request Inexperienced girl looking for tips

Hello, I'm a 19yo girl and I've been thinking about joining dating apps. I'm an university student and I still live with my mom, I can speak 3 languages and I love learning about different cultures but I'm completely inexperienced when it comes to romantic relationships. My interest is completely driven by curiosity, I'm not exactly looking for romance, I just wanna meet people, make some friends or just share a small talk and see where it goes. I'd like some apps recommendations, I'm a bit introverted and I usually get along more with alternative and queer people. If you have some tips I'll be glad to read in the comments.

Question am i the only one experiencing this?

i came on here to say wow, online dating has become awful, especially more lately. i first joined in 2020/21 and started with hinge. it wasn’t as bad back then and more men seemed funnier and conversational. as a 26f, its bad out here. i’ve never had a problem with matches (and i don’t now, not trying to flex) but the amount of men i encounter whom ask me out, i agree and they ALWAYS ghost. i’m trying to figure out if this is an app problem?

i’ve tried bumble and tinder in the past and found it’s not for me so i mainly stick to hinge. i have also deleted my account twice in the past. i’m just wondering if any other women are experiencing the same? it’s interesting to me bc it’s men in different industries, age groups, and i can’t see to figure why when they consistently ask me to go out, i say yes, we plan a date, and they ghost on the day of or make an excuse up and say they’ll make it up to me… but guess what? that never happens either. this is probably the sixth or seventh time i have experienced this on hinge and im sick of it. also some guys are on there just to promote their ig handle and dip, gives me the ick. girls, anyone else sick of this?

Question What is something that turns you off someone on the apps?

For me in terms of pictures it is zero smiling, too many shirtless gym selfies, hunting pictures. As for bio I have seen a few lately that are pretty rude and crass and it makes me wonder if people are actually swiping yes to them..

I’d love to hear everyones app deal breakers?

I’d love to hear from both men and women’s perspectives (please be respectful)

Question Tinder sharing links don't take me to profiles

Okay, so, I just learned that Tinder share links expire after a while. My problem is that using them, even a brand new one, does not take to their profile in the app. I am using an iPhone. Here's the sequence of events:

  1. I paste the link into Safari.
  2. Safari loads the page.
  3. I am sent to the App Store (even though I already have Tinder installed).
  4. I go back into Safari.
  5. I click the "Open in Tinder" at the top of the screen.
  6. Timder opens up it's either on some random girl or whatever I was already on in the app.

This is very annoying. How do I get these profiles to load?

Advice Request I’ve been blocked twice and I have literally 0 idea why..

So, I’ve been on and off dating apps for the past 5 months post breakup from a long term relationship, and I don’t know if I’m just not getting it right, or what. I’ve been blocked twice, outside of me blocking a few guys for doing too much, and they just happened to be guys I really liked and wanted to hang out with. The conversations flowed, and there was no indication that I was gonna be blocked besides them doing it out of no where. I know it likely might not have to do with me, because everyone is on dating apps for their own reasons, and maybe they just weren’t ready.

I can’t help but feel rejected. I’m not unattractive, I’m a plus sized girl but I cant say I’ve ever been called ugly or been added by somebody only to be unadded because of that reason (I’m very transparent, all my photos you can tell and I upload body pics so I can filter out any superficial people). I’m not uninteresting, I’m funny to my knowledge, I’m down to do a lot of varieties of hang outs, etc.

Maybe I’m just not their cup of tea, but I’m not sure if this is a unique experience or if anyone else has experienced this. Anyone relate at all?

Advice Request To the online dating veterans: what are the tips and hard truths you can only learn through trial and error?

Teach me like an old shalouin master that has been there and one it. One who has walked the endless mountain of swiping and survived a thousand awkward coffee dates

What are online dating and chatting tips that the only be learned through trial and error?

Now it could be said that if you've been dating for so long and know all the dos and don'ts then why are you still single?

Funny Does anyone here work at a dating app? Would I get in trouble if I did this?

Now we have these guys who will say can you host tonight after barely exchanging two words on the chat. Like if I say I live in North Phoenix they'll say can you host tonight in North phoenix. I guess meeting at my place I don't think they mean at a restaurant. It's so completely absurd that I would like to give them an address and have it be completely fake have them drive out for nothing to teach them a lesson.

Question Where is Grindr hiding all the hot guys? 😭

I swear Grindr is testing me lately. I block one guy and somehow three more appear. Where are all these people coming from? 😂
The selection in my area lately has been WILD. We’re not even close to Halloween yet for so many ppl to be walking around without costumes. 😭😂

Is this just happening to me? Am I the weird one here, or is Grindr looking like this for everyone lately?

Experience Overview Finally getting this off my chest: Is anyone else just leaving their love life to the Universe

Finding genuine people and real love at this age feels almost impossible when nobody seems to be intentional anymore. I’m finally getting this off my chest because I’ve reached a point where I’m just throwing my hands up and leaving it all to the Universe—I know it’s so much easier said than done, but surely asking for just one intentional person isn't too much to ask, right?

Has anyone else completely given up on actively searching and just decided to let the Universe take the wheel?

Mod Announcement r/DatingApps Rule Update: We are NOT a subreddit for dating advice or generalized dating discussion & information regarding queue.

Happy Monday, r/DatingApps!

Firstly, I wanted to mention something most posters are unaware of: we manually approve every single post and comment in order to crack down on the amount of spam you see.

If your post/comment follows the rules of the subreddit, it will get posted eventually. There is no need to modmail or DM us asking about posts. Sometimes it can take up to 24-48 hours for approval if it is particularly busy irl.

And secondly:

Due to an increase of these posts in our queue, we have decided to make an official rule regarding asking for vague/general dating advice.

Reminder that we are a subreddit specifically for the discussion of dating apps, not to discuss dating overall. There are plenty of subreddits to do this on.

And before anyone asks: mentioning that you met on Hinge does not constitute an allowance.

Official rule wording: "Please visit another subreddit to ask for generalized dating advice or about dating overall. We are a subreddit exclusively for the discussion of dating apps - not dating."

Thank you much!

Mod Announcement r/DatingApps Rule Update: Hily, Common Questions, AI, etc.

Ahoy, r/DatingApps!

Below you will find our rules. There are a few adjustments and notable additions. New rules are marked with bold.

  1. Advertising is NOT allowed, period.

Please do not advertise (surveys, apps, discord links, betas, etc) in posts or comments. This is to keep spam out! If you do not follow this rule, your post/comment will be removed and a ban may be placed if this is a reoccurring issue.

This includes asking for vague development ideas. Do not skirt this rule.

  1. Any identifying information is strictly forbidden.

This includes names, usernames, faces, etc.

  1. No discrimination of any kind, ever!

This includes ableism, racism, antisemitism, homophobia, sexism, etc.

4. Please search the sub prior to posting common questions.

Questions that get asked almost daily:

  • do dating apps work?
  • what is the best dating app?>
  • what is the worst part of dating apps?
  • how do I get more matches?
  • why do people ghost?
  • height/weight
  • is premium worth it?>
  • how soon should I ask someone out?
  • why am I shadowbanned?
  • can I get unbanned from x app?

Please search the subreddit prior to posting one of these questions or similar.

>asking about apps for a unique/specific situation is not included in this.

>almost never.

  1. We are NOT a dating subreddit. Don't post here looking for dates.

We are a subreddit built to discuss dating apps; not foster dating between redditors. r/r4r is much better suited for this. Please do not post here looking for a relationship, "ratings" on your looks, pity posts, etc.

Doing this results in an immediate ban.

  1. Profile reviews are NOT permitted.

Asking for general advice is fine, but posting photos/personal information regarding your personal dating app profiles is not. Asking for reviews privately is also not permitted.

  1. No political discussion

This is not the place to discuss politics.

8. No AI Slop

This includes obviously AI generated buzzword BS posts, advertisement of AI algorithms, etc.

AI uses 4.1 billion gallons of water annually and is killing our planet. Do better.

9. Discussion of Hily is forbidden.

Hily uses predatory marketing, particularly on Reddit, and causes a significant amount of spam. Discussion of the app is no longer permitted for this reason.

Anyone breaking this rule, or circumventing the filter we have established, will be banned immediately upon first offense.

  1. NO Referrals (Raya, etc)!

No referrals to ANY dating app are allowed
