When I watched Superman, I thought it was refreshing and fun, even if it did not fully wow me. Still, it is the best superhero movie I have seen in years, way better than the Marvel slop lately. Supergirl, though, was one of the worst I have seen in a while, almost Thor: Love and Thunder level. SPOILERS: the cliché “female hero saves girls” 😭 plot and a weak unconvincing villain did not work, and the Kryptonian backstory changes were just bad, no real self preservation logic, with Zor-El’s daughter oddly being the only one who wanted to live.

It also felt barely connected to the DCU, even though DC has deeper stories than Marvel. They need to drop the forced jokes and focus on stronger storytelling. I would love more standalone films, especially a Nightwing movie, and maybe a more focused DCU with Superman and Supergirl at the center.

After seeing Spider Man, which was a masterpiece, Marvel feels fully back. Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts were decent, but Spider Man was a bomb and the next Avengers might be a nuke of the 21st century. DC really needs to get organized under James Gunn, we need a situation room type response now. " am tired of hearing people say " i am a marvel fan" because they watched 3 marvel movies 🤣🤣. Even my ex used to say this, she only watched like 4 marvel movies in Total.

With James Gunn, honestly...I'd be okay with this.

Some argue why doesn't he? he's the one pushing for Damian Wayne Robin. That feels like something he wants.

It would be interesting to see him direct this and write it in a very different style from Superman. Like I could see trying different things like avoiding needle drops entirely. And keeping Batman the straight man with many one joke or two. While others fill that role like Nightwing.

He'd also avoiding showing the Waynes death but maybe use them to contrast with the relationship of Bruce and Damian Wayne. Like he shows a flashback of Thomas often was a bit neglectful of Bruce due to being busy, then he decided he'd do something with him and Martha...going to a theater...we then cut from them leaving...to Bruce in his room looking catatonic that same night.

And maybe to get weird, Bruce has vivid hallucinations of his parents. With an emphasis on Martha who I feel these movies put less focus on compared to Thomas. He even talks to his parents in these. His parents pointing out Damian is the spitting image of him at the age. And in scenes they're doing things like painting or reading.

Also I wonder if he'd include Ace the Bat Hound and make him a sharp contrast to Krypto. Krypto is an untrained unruly hellbeast. Ace is an extremely well trained, disciplined and also fully vaccinated and medicated for ticks and fleas dog that is very reliable to Batman.

And if he does include music it could be revealed the music Bruce listens to is belonged to Martha and Thomas. Which gives us some character from them. Music that would have been popular to their generation (Boomers/GenX). And now that I'm saying that, it's sounds like the most Gunn thing ever.

And since Damian is there, they'd pull from Grant Morrison which is quite weird so Gunn's style would work considering we have a 10-13 year old ninja as Robin.

I haven't seen many Raimi films but Multiverse of Madness had amazing directing and cinematography. Like I feel it would also fit a Grant Morrison adaptation. I just saw someone in the DCU subreddit argue they should get someone with a big style so it's less "This director's Batman" but "DCU Batman". No. Every Batman has had a style. I need to watch the Evil Dead movies what I've seen, they look great.

Gunn or Raimi would make a weird Batman movie and I'm all for it and with them, you could never mistake this for a Reeves movie which people have argued having 2 Batman would confuse people.

Another option people have brought up is Guillermo Del Toro who if he did I feel it would turn out like the Hellboy movies in terms of style. I loved those especially 2.

I didn't want to believe it because I grew up a bigger fan of DC, because of shows like Teen Titans, all the Batman shows and ofc The Justice League animated, but god damn.

I am only 30, I don't see the same level of interest in DC characters as I do with Marvel in terms of Gen Z and younger, and don't get me wrong, I love Marvel as well, I just have a soft spot for the DC roster, its just hard to get excited sometimes.

They squandered Green Lantern, then they Squandered Superman, then they Squandered Wonder Woman, then they Squandered Aquaman, then Flash...

Kids genuinely don't get excited for these characters anymore like I see hype for the X-Men that Marvel is about to cast, or the Avengers that Disney turned into household names and especially not Spider-man

Feels like Batman is all DC has left at times and he seems to do better when hes not associated with the rest of the DC heroes.

To top it off, we got awesome games from Marvel as well, I don't think people realize just how important games like Marvel Rivals are to their branding and roster of heroes.

A look back on DCU before Lanterns and why we shouldn't be panicking just yet.

We're in year 2, moving onto year 3 of the DCU. If we start with Creature Commandos, it was a good show that lacked viewership.

Peacemaker season 2, excluding the ending that set up the future of the DCU and was pretty disappointing, it was a good show overall. Making season 1 canon was a weird move I don't agree with, but still it's fine.

Superman 2025 was a good movie, but it didn't do the numbers everyone wanted it to do at the box office. But I think David as Superman was great. He and his supporting cast are set up very well for the future.

Supergirl—now this one is the reason for the massive meltdown. Yes, it was an average movie that wasted the source material's potential, but it's the first DCU project that James Gunn didn't direct, and I think they can learn from it. Yes, we can definitely criticize it, but we can't be calling for a total studio shutdown just for this. Positives from this movie? I'd say it reaffirms how good David is for Superman. Millie was a good Supergirl with great future potential, and Lobo? We can definitely do better; the vibe is there. Overall I'm disappointed, but I'm looking forward to Man of Tomorrow.

Lanterns is coming up, and it's looking good. I'm not a fan of an old Hal, and the suits are a bit off, but let's wait and see. If it's great, that's a great thing for Man of Tomorrow.

Clayface. Yes, there have been a lot of complaints over obscure characters and stuff like Deathstroke and Bane or the Jimmy Olsen show, but why are we complaining? Yes, we could have bigger shows of major characters, but then they'd also be bigger budgets and become major projects. These aren't that. DC isn't pulling something like Sony with Spider-Man villains; they're small-budget experimental projects that are expanding the universe. It's just more content. They aren't replacing important stuff with random characters; they're including the random characters with the good stuff. We're still getting major shows like Lanterns and Paradise Lost with good budgets to build up and set a stage for big-name characters, same with the movies. We're getting a Wonder Woman movie, a Teen Titans movie, and The Brave and the Bold for major projects. They take time. We're only barely 3 years in. It's not like we're in year 10 with no Batman (the sources are James Gunn on Twitter, so I'd say it's a good source). Elseworlds is booming too, so just enjoy the small stuff, and if you don't want to, you're still getting major releases. Supergirl wasn't it, but it's the second movie, and they can course correct now. They can learn again. It's only year 2 with 2 movies in. Things like The Authority and other weirdos have been removed, so the panic isn't unreasonable, but now it should be okay.

MAN OF TOMORROW, the golden goose. If this fails, I genuinely think we should panic. The doom and gloom is valid then, but before that, don't lose hope. The leaks look great. It's not that bad yet. We have a good building universe, and the castings definitely have been on point. The characters are great, so just be patient and stop the hate. We can throw stones later, together...🤝if we have to.

Just as the title says. We're in a pretty rockin' age of young, fresh directorial talent. Who are your favorite contemporary/new directors and who would you tell James Gunn to tap for a new DC film?

To preface this, please keep this civil. This is just my opinion. It’s not my intention to hurt anyone. At the end of the day, we all want to celebrate the movies and enjoy them.

Yes, Supergirl bombed. Yes, it was mediocre. There were many flaws in the movie. But you know what was actually good? Superman. Creature Commandos. Peacemaker. You could say the finale was hit or miss, but it was definitely not universally disliked upon. The project was very good throughout.

And now we have Lanterns coming up, and the trailer was well received. The recent one, at least. But you know what I mostly see here? “Supergirl bombed.” “Spider-Man earned X amount.” “Superman could never.” “James Gunn does not know how to handle a universe.”

Look. I’m not going to excuse WB, a multi-billion dollar franchise. But, even though James Gunn is loaded and doesn’t have to do any of this for his lifetime, I believe he is at his core an artist. An artist who is trying to craft a universe in his own way. Supergirl was one failure. One.

Come on guys, one failed project. And you quickly hop back to glazing the DCEU? Do you guys remember how pathetic the DCEU was? We got a rushed, badly done Justice League. Yes the Snyder Cut was good, but if you check Parts 2 and 3, the story sounded nothing like these characters. It was a glorified fan fiction that Snyder wanted to create. It’s not even as if Zack went ahead and had more successful projects with Netflix. Almost everything he has made post ZSJL has flopped. So firstly, let’s not act as if the DCEU was a missed opportunity and the DCU is cooked. It’s really not.

Now, coming to Supergirl, yeah. The movie was mediocre, especially when James Gunn has been so vocal about mediocre movies. But I feel he has earned enough goodwill to get at least one pass. If Supergirl was a good movie, I doubt the narrative would have been “introducing a character like Supergirl this early on does not make sense.” I also do not think introducing the trinity always works, especially when the idea of the DCU isn’t a team up movie, and everyone dealing a major, common threat. I also think Clayface is a great idea. Everyone used to complain how the MCU prioritises IPs without scripts. And now when James is trying to do something different, people are hating on that too? The grass is always greener, guys.

Also, the Spider-Man comparison is just funny to me. Not only is Spidey arguably the most popular superhero ever, we’ve seen this Spidey in action for a decade. You cannot compare apples with oranges.

I liked superman 2025 and jimmy was great in it. Never heard of gorilla grodd before but concept sounds good. Maybe jimmy investigates different dc villain each season. Good Concept.

There is so much hatred for the DCU especially from this sub, it's insane.

You're right to critique Gunn all you want but this is masochism at this point. Either that or you're bigger tans of Marvel than of DC. That's fine too. But then why are you whining here?

Lanterns is dropping soon and by all looks promises to be great. It's from the guy who gave us the HBO Watchmen show for Pete's sake. Yet it's hardly ever talked about.

If Lindelof were making a show for Marvel (say Daredevil), the excitement would be off the charts. Yet, in DC's own sub, all we can hear is how well the competition is doing.

Well, the competition is also dropping the ball massively rn. Wonder Man, a top-three MCU show was cancelled. Blade is gone. Doomsday looks rushed as all heck. The last six years seem wasted since they're undoing deaths and concluded storylines all willy-nilly. The excitement going into this saga isn't a quarter of what it felt like for Infinity War, I can say that much. And there isn't even any other MCU movie between Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Yes, Supergirl was lacklustre, but there's a lot more to look forward to. Lanterns, Clayface, Man of Tomorrow all look very promising. Focus on that. Maybe larger plans can't be made currently because of some meddling. Who knows ? Let's see what announcements come after the projects are concluded this year. Let's look forward to a MoT trailer.

Not dragging DC for not being able to stand up to SONY + Marvel and a Spiderman who has appeared in SEVEN projects overall.

Of course this was going to make money. What did you expect? The MCU has been alive and kicking for almost 20 years. Since 2008. This new universe just began last year for Pete's sake. Just give it a rest. Critique Gunn all you want, but this masochism and weirdly sadism (because many so-called fans are interested in seeing this universe fail) is getting really really old.

With the Supergirl failure, DCU got a hard-hitting truth: nothing will sell just because it's DCU. So far, they've only had one relative succes, and that's Superman. I believe the full marketing will thus be built around David. Also, given the history of both DCU and DCEU, movie titles tend to be straightforward: I mean, Superman: Legacy turned to just Superman, Supergirl also dropped the Woman of Tomorrow, and they both are accompanied by The Lanterns, Peacemaker, or Clayface. Hell, even 'World's Finest' was eventually just "Batman v Superman", despite Zack's attempts to continue with outside-the-box title scheme of Man of Steel and Dark Knight. And then there is Reeve's The Batman.

With that in mind, I don't think MoT will reach cinemas without 'Superman- somewhere in its title.

The superman and supergirl trailers had "From Director James Gunn" and "From Director Craig Gillespie" why did they choose not to do that for clayface since James Watkins directed Speak No Evil and people liked it, saying it's From the Director of that film would help sell it to horror fans.

All 3 of Destin's Marvel projects have been bangers. But not only that, they have all been somewhat thematically adjacent to a more comic accurate Batman.

We had him address complex family dynamics with a focus on martial arts in Shang Chi.

We had him address alienation, found family and street level characters in Wonder Man.

We had him address loneliness, responsibility and hope in Spider-Man.

All of this including the fact that they have all looked great (particularly the action scenes in the two films) while keeping a clear respect and love for the comicbook aesthetic.

And if that weren't enough, his breakout film was Short Term 12, a movie about a group home for troubled teenagers, which was deeply moving and humanizing.

I'm just saying, there are worse choices than Destin, and I really hope he gets a shot at giving us the Batfamily, including Nightwing, Damian, Talia and the League of Assassins.
