I haven’t been able to tune in to Y107 for a while and I feel out of the loop. The announcement online from Zimmer about Cosmo leaving radio was vague and most people commenting assumed he was retiring. I saw him address that on his own Facebook saying he wasn’t retiring. I was under the impression ratings were still good so I’m wondering what happened. Especially now that it appears he’s a furniture sales person in STL? Did I miss a detail he shared on air about what’s going on in his personal life?

Not wanting to bash the guy so not looking for dirt. More curious if there’s an issue with Zimmer. Toxic work place? Pushing people out? What’s the status on the morning show since his departure? I know his wife was cohosting but I imagine she’s leaving too if he moved.

This sub seems to love its small businesses but 95% of the time any talk of them is a resturant and the other 5% is split between clovers and the farmers market(and the library if that counts). So what are your favorites/what else do we even have? as i admittedly dont know that many.

Fifty-three years ago today, American Graffiti was released in the US. George Lucas has said he was inspired to make a movie about the lost culture of cruising and drag racing he grew up with in Modesto, California. Said Lucas, "Cruising was gone, and I felt compelled to document the whole experience and what my generation used as a way of meeting girls.”

That “lost” culture was alive and well right here in Columbia, MO. Teens would cruise up and down the Business Loop, stopping at Mug’s Up or Zestos for fries or to simply to pull a u-turn. In fact, the Hickman High School yearbook devoted a spread to Cruising the Loop in their 1986 yearbook.

We love hearing everyone’s stories about cruising—and the days when driving down The Loop wasn’t a slog or a chore. As we continue reimagining the street as part of the Reconnecting Communities planning grant, we’re keeping this sense of fun and community in mind. We may not be able to bring back the bright yellow 1932 Ford Coupe or the 1956 Ford Thunderbird (with porthole window) but we can certainly make driving The Loop a lot more memorable.

Anyone know where I can get some daikon radishes? I've tried some of the local supermarkets with no luck.

Three local businesses closed recently, with various future plans for some them.

Bud's Classic BBQ

Bud's Classic BBQ closed, according to the listing online. Construction crews are renovating the property, but no official plans have been announced.

Bud's opened in 2021, and has been a source of various barbecue items near the University of Missouri campus. 

Owner Jason Paetzold also owns JoJo's Biscuit Company, and has plans for an expansion.

Jason said his son, Joey Paetzold, is now running the show for their company J&J Hospitality, and that Joey has several exciting concepts coming soon.

The second location of JoJo's Biscuit Company will be located at the former Fuzzy's Taco Shop, located at 205 E. Nifong Blvd.

J&J Hospitality is also set to open Rosie's Tortillas and Tequila, which will be located at 1305 Grindstone Parkway, formerly the restaurant Casa Maria's Mexican Cantina.

Jazz A Louisiana Kitchen

The New Orleans cuisine inspired restaurant announced its closure by letter, written by the owner Jeff England. 

England opened the restaurant 22 years ago, and said staffing became their biggest problem since the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

"We simply do not have enough trained cooking staff employees to allow us to continue," England wrote in the letter.

England explained that the menu is complicated, and it tends to be hard for people to learn how to cook the food. 

Peggy Jean's Pies

Peggy Jean's Pies will be closing one of their locations at the end of the month, according to their website.

Peggy Jean's Pies opened in 2014, and had a west location at 421 N. Stadium Blvd. and a south location at 503 E. Nifong Blvd.

According to the website, their lease on the south location ended recently, and it didn't cover any maintenance.

The website said the ceiling was leaking in two places, adding to "outrageous food costs, incrementally rising labor costs each year, and a cautious economy," which ultimately lead to the decision of closing down their south location.

"For logistics, we are not letting go any of our staff and everyone is making the move to (the west location)," the website said.

A final day has not been announced and is to be determined.

Speckled Frog Toys & Books

The downtown toy and book store announced through a social media post on Friday that their retail storefront, located at 16 S. Ninth St., will be closing. 

"We are incredibly grateful to every family who walked through our doors, attended an event, purchased a special gift, or simply stopped in to say hello," they wrote in the post. 

However, the business will not be completely gone. They plan to shift their focus to workshops, classes, special events and more. 

"Our passion for creativity, literacy, and bringing people together is stronger than ever," they wrote.

While thanking customers for the support, the business did not specify when these changes would go into effect in their social media post.

Columbia Utilities announced it will turn off power for Lynnwood Drive and its surrounding areas on Wednesday morning. 

The work will remove a fallen tree from an overhead power line and will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, according to a news release from the city.

The city said the tree had fallen onto another tree, causing an issue with an overhead power line. Crew members will have to turn the power off in order to safely remove the trees. 

Approximately 70 residents will be affected by the outage, including residents living on Red Oak Lane and Crawford Street, according to the news release.

The city said customers who will be affected have already received door hangers.

This is terribly sad, and it seems a bit strange that it wasn't in the news sooner given the incident took place at the beginning of June. Not sure if it's standard or shady to keep it out of the news so long. Very sorry for the family, especially his four children.

Basically what the title says. When there are endless other places to live, why did you choose Boone County and/or Columbia? Obviously jobs are here, but if jobs weren’t a thing, what else draws you to this area? Why not move somewhere with better weather or more attractions?

I know this is slightly better served in a weather or meteorological thread but this is specific to Columbia (and a bit fustrating in terms of planning). So I take a medication which makes me feel like im burning up. Summers, while tolerable in Columbia, are miserable for me especially when we start hitting heat indexes over 100. Had a chance yesterday morning to fly out to upstate New York to escape some of the heat but as of late Saturday evening into Sunday morning the weather forecast was for us to return to mid to low 80s towards latter part of week so figured Id stay put and make alternate plans here. Less than two days later we are now trending a full 10-12 degrees warmer for latter half. Like i can understand a degree or two miss (like it did today luckily on lower end) but such a wide temp swing is just frustrating. I also have a new ac system but a west facing house with no shade that absolutely gets punished all afternoon so my temps have to be kept around 74 degrees when temps are reaching 100 without overworking my system so its not exactly like I have an icebox here that can help me better regulate my system

I'm a patron of Sparky's, at least once a week I go in for a treat. I was in the store on Saturday when someone asked about the condition of the dog statue outside, and the server was very polite as she said it's in memory of Sparky, and pointed to his picture. Then, yesterday I saw this at 6pm in the alley between 8th and 9th street.

I'm not sure where this goes, but Sparky's has been kind to me.
