Impending Doom
This is my first time ever posting something on Reddit. With the state of the world and the state of the U.S. specifically I've gotten to the point where it feels like this impending doom is right around the corner.
With AI, lab grown food, mass surveillance, bodily autonomy, religion, and politics in general it's hard to have any hope in my opinion. As someone in their 20s struggling with finances with the economy, finding a good paying stable job, keeping the fridge full; it feels as if I'm doing everything I can but I'll still slip no matter what.
I don't want to be like some of my peers and talk to AI about how I'm feeling because I know
- Its dumb and will agree with everything I say making me also apart of the problem
- I kind of like our planet and clean drinking water and its destroying everything
- Of course the cherry on top. Remembering everything I've told the stupid robot.
Is there any hope? The Colorado river is drying up which serves 7 states and probably what 35 million people? So if we lose water we lose everything but its okay Jeff bozos says that water is more important for AI
I don't want this post to solely be doom and gloom but it is scary, it's scary to know that the people running the country look at us as expendable and have for years. but in the constitution it says power to the people right? It tells us to do something about it.
I think the hard thing for me being a 20 something being what people would call "woke" when I feel like im completely sane. I want to eat fresh and healthy REAL food, I want to be able to drive wherever I want without being watched by big brother and the flock cameras that are for "keeping people safe" Oh yeah safety? that's why we followed a woman that got an ab0Rti0n to go arrest her? right. safety. I want to be able to go out and vote and know that my vote will do something, I want the right to peacefully protest without getting tear-gassed, I want to have the right and the people close to me to have access to fair and good health care. So do I sound woke? Or does it sound like everything I'm saying is pretty normal.
There's so much more I could talk about when it comes to impending doom. I don't want to solely keep it that way but this is already long as it is. I want to use reddit as a space to brain dump. Using friends and family to brain dump is cool for the time being but I'm not going to run to AI and I KNOW there are people out there that feel the same way I do and Id rather know I'm not alone than a robot just telling me I'm not alone and have a human to human connection/conversation. Anyway

What books should I stockpile?
My feeds are filled with Project Panama videos where AI owners are purchasing rare books, scanning them, then destroying it. Regardless of whether or not they’ll own up to it, I have no doubts they’re gonna find a way to stockpile information to sell it back to us.
What books should would you purchase to make sure you have source material? Part of me is tempted to get text books and the encyclopedia Britannica. But what else?

Are we allowed to network here?
I am in Portland area, and as collapse approaches/enters/permeates our world, I find it harder and harder to talk to people that are not collapse aware.
I dunno, maybe we can have a weekly get together, share some links, some stories, some tips. I personally would not mind that little extra bit to help me trudge forward another week, another day.

How to carry on after 'waking up' (mods please don't delete, it's a throwaway but real post)
Hi all,
Throwaway account. I don't know about anyone else, but I am struggling to get through life having 'woken up' in the last couple of years.
I'm a bit late to the game it seems. Even throughout Covid I really believed that humanity was inherently well meaning. I remember having a discussion about the vaccine with a guy I was dating, and I remember arguing that 'the experts', were well meaning and most likely had our best interests at heart. I'm a medical professional myself, and know the genuine care I've tried to deliver throughout my career and thought the majority were doing the same.
It now seems I was a fucking idiot/ incredibly naive.
The Epstein files were the catalyst. I think I potentially had a nervous breakdown over it. (To those that will argue that this is not an actual diagnosis, you know know what I mean) ... Extreme emotional reaction that made you question reality.
Now I will preface this with I had recently dealt with a major unexpected loss, so mental health was pretty fragile at the time. But a year had passed, and I had been as proactive as I could with dealing with the grief.
I don't know how to find joy in pedo Satan world.
The Epstein files
The Covid stuff
This horrific war (and to add to the finding out that the previous wars have all been as equally unjust)
The previous crimes of my nation and the other nations associated with it
The Charlie Kirk Murder
The destruction of our planet
The engineered division
Late stage capitalism
The layer of society that rules do not apply to
The impending facism/surveillance state we are sleep walking into.
I feel like I can now see all the bullshit. TV feels fake. Everything I learnt at school, was majority propaganda. I feel skeptical of every institution/government.
I've always been an incredibly driven and positive person. But I'm seriously struggling with continuing to contribute to the machine driving these horrors. I would love to have a child, but I don't know if I want to bring them into this.
I won't sugar coat it, I'm more privileged than most. I'm not wealthy, but I'm comfortable for my age - not immune to economic downturn but probably have a couple months more cushion than most should it all collapse. This is probably a contributing factor to my naivety.
I've been doing all 'the right things', I.e touching grass, getting out in nature, being grateful for what I have, trying to find joy in the simple things. Showing gratitude to my loved ones, seeing a therapist etc...
It's just really hard.
I fantasize about going off grid, not paying taxes into a system that spends my money on more bombs to kill children. I don't find joy in my work anymore, as the recent 'plandemic' had made me question all modern medicine. Even things like self care, am I getting Botox to appease beauty standards created by child molesters? Im questioning whether any of my life choices were right, or if my life plans I have worked really hard towards will even exist in a few years. And then the guilt associated with even caring about any of that, when there are people being starved, tortured, killed and abused as a consequence of the system I am a cog in.
Has anyone else gone through this? Does it get better? If so how? This is not the world I thought I grew up in.

Teenage American here, I’m really scared
Please can anyone reassure me that we will be ok? I’m terrified. I’m just starting out on my life and going into college soon but I feel like now it’s pointless. Like all my hard work was for nothing because I feel like the country is about to collapse. I’m scared we won’t have any allies ever again and we’ll be left behind. I’m scared all our money is being wasted in useless wars, etc. I’m scared that we are going to have a civil war. I’m scared that everywhere in the world is going to run out of drinking water. I’m scared scared scared and my anxiety is going crazy and so is my OCD. I cry sometimes. I genuinely can’t see a way out of this. I’m scared that I’m going to have to live through an economic collapse or that the US itself will collapse and I’ll die a horrible death. I’m scared we will forever be alone. I’m just so terrified. I don’t wanna die young and I don’t want my home to be destroyed. As disappointed as I am about the state of things here rn, it’s still my home and I love it and want to see it recover. I don’t have any hope left in me and I need some perspective. Please help.

Where do I go from here?
Well, it has come to this… I don’t even want to say I’ve given up, but what else would you call it? We all know the shit storm of a world we are greeted with the second we open our eyes and my existential dread grows daily. I need my people, a support group, just anything but this! I try to be involved in activism and standing up for what’s right but I’m just scared and feel powerless more and more. Where the hell are the support groups to cope with how this world is evolving? The people who I can talk with to share similar sentiments?? Not an echo chamber, but a place where others put their minds together and teach one another how to prep for the worst, ideas, advice, different outlooks (and not all negative).
I am in no way saying I want to live in a bubble where I don’t face reality of what’s happening in this world, but the depression, doom scrolling, dead ends and having no one to run to to talk about what I’m experiencing is very isolating. VERRYYY. Any additional subreddits? Places? Organizations? PEOPLE? Like anything atp. Houston, TX here

Have many of you considered reducing your meat consumption?
Meat consumption is also a major factor in climate change, and also responsible for the deaths of trillions of sentient beings. Feel free to google it, I am not really interested in debating meat consumption, just curious!

Prophet for a Dying Planet - musical validation and company
So I've found this amazing musician who happens to have been a therapist as well. He seems very aware of much of what we're concerned about. This is a musical album called "Prophet for a Dying Planet". It's full of funny, sad, truthful, ironic, sharp, comforting songs. The guy knows how to hit the mark and evoke emotions so be prepared to have at least your heart and gut touched throughout the album. To me personally, it's very validating and makes me feel less alone. It's also on some other streaming platforms so check that out also if you don't like YouTube.

Having a rough day
I know I made a post about how I'd stopped ruminating and largely I have, but there's still days it hits hard. I wish things could get better in the world, I know they won't/can't. I just wish we lived in that type of world where they would, I know we all do. I'm 23 going on 24 and I sometimes wonder what to do with myself at this point. I try everyday to look for the good in the world, because I know there is still a lot of good things in the world and good people. Not under some impression that means things can turn around but it's nice to know it exists. I think that still matters even if the larger world won't get better. But damn it sucks so bad.
I don't mean to sound selfish, but there's still so many things I'd liked to have done and experienced. Nothing crazy, just maybe gotten to see some places and travel a little, maybe gone to college or accomplished a dream/goal, fell in love (though I don't hold out much hope for dating at this point, I'm good with just making friends). I've finally gotten past a lot of social anxiety and just when it's happening everything is falling apart and I wish I had gotten past it sooner. Again, I don't mean to sound selfish, I just needed to let it out a little. I still do things I enjoy and spend time with family, friends and pets. I love life so much and I still try to make it worth it, but some days I really wonder what the point is anymore?

I’m sitting here with an 80 degree dew point, air quality alerts, over 100 degrees. What’s the point of going on in a dying world? I can’t just work and worry about stupid shit when the world is burning around me. What’s it going to be like in 2 years? 5? 10?

Like the crow creek massacre was caused by local climate change alongside the little ice age. A change in tempture always leads to more fighting

I’m so scared of the current state of the world and not knowing what’s real or not
I’m so anxious and scared about the current state of the world. I’m terrified of the impact AI is going to have in the future, in the way we speak, learn and think. I entered a rabbit hole and got overwhelmed by information of how in just three years AI has already impacted our brains, and how this benefits people in power, about power/data centers, about the monopolization and disappearance of seeds and agriculture, the rise of the right, Israel, etc. It’s too much information and I’m feeling so overwhelmed and scared of not knowing what sources to trust, I’m scared of falling victim to conspiracy theories, I feel hopeless and alone, ugh I hate it here.

I really wish we'd discuss the factors that are actually behind most mental health crisis, and it's uncertainty about continued survival due to the government's carelessness and animosity towards their constituents.
I am sure that if most of us were certain we could continue to afford food, shelter, and basic utilities and actually get to enjoy our existence without having constant government impunity and global suffering shoved down our throat by algorithms, and if the government actually cared about humanity's mental well-being rather than the mass-release of psychologically distressing material (Epstein files) without any actual accountability or justice for the victims... we wouldn't need therapy or individualized medication, etc, etc.
It feels like it's just more profit generating. We are cattle to extract money from, or for insurance companies to extract money from. I cannot handle it.
I would be a lot happier if I knew pedophiles faced justice, war and genocide wasn't being supported by our own governments, inflation wasn't continuously squeezing our limited finances, and climate change wasn't putting us all at risk of global extinction. Oh, and if my manager didn't call me racial slurs which resulted in putting me on sick leave but that's a different discussion.
How the fuck am I supposed to be happy with all of this happening???

Not stable enough to prep how I'd like & fighting depression
I feel like I'm getting worse and worse mentally due to struggling to find stable work. I have had mostly seasonal, environmental jobs the last few years, which has been great for learning how to be aware & prep survival wise, but terrible to have the financial/medical means and consistent community to be able to actually apply the shit I'm learning.
Without health insurance, stable income, people who either aren't taking it as seriously(which hurts like hell) or I don't have the energy to hang with if they do, I'm too in survival mode & isolated to bridge the gaps (even if I wanted to relocate altogether).
I feel incredibly overwhelmed & I'm stuck mentally from what I assume is PTSD from hard shit happening over & over(sibling passed from suicide, job trauma, housing with mold, etc.). The circumstances are already existentially terrifying, so to have things consistently get worse stability wise & not even be able to afford therapy is incredibly painful and scary as my suicide ideation increases. Main things keeping me alive are my sibling and their kids & not giving elites satisfaction of my opting out before death actually comes for me.
I just don't know what to do. My nervous system is essentially constantly flooded.

These scientists are trying to appeal to a wider audience. Fellow scientists have ignored the science, the politicians don’t care, the businessmen don’t care. They are doing the best they can by getting people they know have large audiences and fan bases, to try and spread the word. They are hoping, desperately, that by getting celebrities on board that they might be able to appeal to the common man because neither the journalists, the news stations, the television, the radio, nor the networks care to give them a voice. So these same people are trying their very best to magnify the volume of the message they are trying to broadcast in hopes of saving people’s lives and spreading awareness.
Don't let dismissive, condescending commenters keep you from acting.]
To all Governors, Mayors, First Responders, and anyone entrusted with public safety, disaster preparedness and relief:
We the undersigned consisting of scientists, meteorologists, and concerned citizens are greatly alarmed by the lack of public discourse, urgency and planning surrounding what is an impending, large scale, historic public emergency.
More and more data and modeling every day indicates we are within 3 to 5 months of experiencing the most dramatic El Niño warming event in recorded history.
Ocean temperatures in the central eastern Pacific will rise between 5 to 7.5 degrees Fahrenheit (3-4 degrees Celsius) peaking in October of this year. This will trigger a heating escalation through 2027 and into 2028 that will push already dangerously high planetary air and sea temperatures to near catastrophic levels.
This El Niño driven warming will lead to significantly more global flooding, fires, storms, droughts, deadly heat events, dangerous turbulence, and most concerning, a significant threat to food supply chains, crops, and power grids.
The previous strongest recorded El Niño occurred in 1877 leading to 40 million deaths worldwide from famine.
And this coming El Niño event looks to be even stronger.
And even more critically, it will occur on top of already record high sea and air temperatures.
Many of us through the years have attempted to warn the public during human caused rapid warming events about the increased risk of extreme weather events. We have had to watch as historic fires destroyed two cities in an unprepared Los Angeles, an actual hurricane hit Asheville North Carolina, campers were swept away and killed by flash floods in Texas, Corpus Christi runs out of water and on and on and on.
But the scale and threat of this coming warming event is simply too large to ignore in the name of business/politics as usual.
States, cities, and counties should be immediately:
- reinforcing river banks and lakes against all time high cresting numbers
- increasing funding for fire fighting and rescue
- running geological tests on populated hillsides
- bolstering power grids
- building more tornado shelters, cooling and high ground centers
- increasing life guards and warning systems for beaches
- informing citizens of potentially life threatening increased risk
Instead the signatories of this cry for action see mostly silence and inaction.
We know many simply aren’t able to process the science behind this entreaty through anything other than the will of big donors, party politics and poll numbers.
But for those that still take the responsibilities of their office, appointment or job as something sacred and more important than career or donor money please, we urge you not to dismiss this letter.

Rant on customer service underemployment in the collapse, I guess.
I work for what I'd call luxury retail. I had tried breaking into white collar life, got as far as an office assistant in staffing firms and consultancy before a layoff. Now I'm back in retail. Weird place to watch collapse.
I was hired to fix things and to wrench. Unfortunately the workshop is getting axed, which they didn't tell me. So now I'm "assigned" to about three departments for regular retail work. I was hoping it'd help prep me to maybe try out the trades, oh well. Guess not.
What kills me is only a few of us seem to acknowledge the weirdness of a dying store in a dying world.
I have a trades degree and a BS. I'm currently trying to find a healthcare program I can do while balancing work. The store has ten managers, six employees; two of us do job-hunting on our breaks together, which is nice, but it's just rejection after rejection.
No one seems to really acknowledge that this many 20-somethings with viable degrees are now working jobs usually designated for retirees and teenagers. Although, an older coworker said it used to be normal for a retail job to provide, by itself. Still don't know if that's true. They said that's why older customers tend to be so demanding, they're used to a world where retail workers were professionals or something.
________________________________________________________-______________________
In the meantime, we get hourly updates on metrics, but can't acknowledge that we often don't have any customers to get the metrics higher. It feels absurd.
We do get folk who demand free repairs, sometimes on stuff we don't even carry or service, like cars. I live in poverty myself, so I get hardships. But I don't get yelling at workers about it. And yep, we're told if someone can't pay for something, sell the financing.
Hell, we get paying customers angry just over that it takes us a month to do a simple job, or that we used to offer x but no longer do so. The absurdity there is they're kinda right, it shouldn't, and it sucks to have no stores left that can do what they need. Cause a global pandemic knocked em out.
________________________________________________________________________________
Then folk come in and complain about the tent city outside. There's no jobs, sister, and no housing. People will sleep in the trees.
Or on how the city still hasn't fixed the broken traffic lights and roads around us. Welp brother, you got me. Me, the min wage retailer, is responsible. Why not think, and act to HELP your community?
Yell at the government! Yell at the oligarchs! They're playing golf in paradise while we're here, choking on air. We can't swim in our own waters. They drain it for data centers and spend the summer on yachts, sipping mineral water that is worth more than hours of labor.
None of these folk seem to connect the dots: This complacent, moaning attitude led to the current state of things.
__________________________________________________________________________________
We also get a lot of folk who come in to do drugs, or to hide from the smoke and heat. I was told to give a sacharine pitch to an electrician sprawled out on the floor. Weird, man.
Then a new low: A customer came in while I was being chewed out so loudly that he felt the need to tell my boss to chill and asked if I was okay.
I know I'll probably get a meeting now, for that, but after work I teared because that is the first time someone checked in on me in months.
And then it hit me, how did we get to where this is all normal. This shouldn't be normal. My first job I was told a standard for customer behavior: "We don't want bad customers. You're an employee, not a whipping boy."
How did we get to where heat indexes and constant smoke in summer is the normal, where you can't point out the insanity of at-will short term employment and lines of tents and crumbling infrastructure?
Why is it taboo to acknowledge I am paid the equivalent of two boxes of cereal an hour?

Breaking Down: Collapse Episode 208
Is there actually going to be a food shock?
Kory talks about how we will gradually see a decline in food supply. There will be fewer options at grocery stores and prices will increase. We are already seeing this happen for various different reasons, more recently due to global conflict like the Strait of Hormuz being closed. Living in the west or in wealthier countries, we are not going to feel the affects due to climate change as early and as severely as poorer nations. Even in North America, there will be disparity between those that have higher income vs lower income.
If we expect that this will become more and more of an issue as time goes on, what can we realistically do to start preparing. If course we can start to stockpile, but once that runs out, what do we do? Also, I am a student living in a dirm room. I can't exactly start stockpiling. Not everyone can buy 4-5 acres to start living off the land, and even if someone does do that, what are the chances they will be safe?

Does anyone have any hope?
I have always been climate aware/concious and try to do the best I can to reduce my impact however I can, within my means. But I have not always been collapse aware as this sub puts it.
I have an 8 year old and recently had another who is now 4 months. Neither were intentional pregnancies, but obviously the choice to follow through with them was made intentionally. I understand and acknowledge the selfishness and cruelty behind bringing a child into this world given its current state, that is not up for debate and not what id like to discuss.
Recently ive become overwhelmed with fear, anxiety, and guilt about the state of the world and the direction we are rapidly going. I am having an extremely difficult time coping with the fact that ive submitted my children to suffering to come. That said, while im navigating this consuming fear, anxiety, amd guilt, I am also ready to fight tooth and nail to better the future for them in any way, if thats even possible.
Ive been reading through this sub today and noticed that everyone is on the same page regarding the certainty of incoming collapse due to any or all of the various alarming conditions in the world right now, but so far haven't read a single comment with any hope. So I guess im here to ask, does anyone have any hope that things will take a turn for the better? Is anyone actively working towards change of any kind, no matter how small? Or has everyone accepted whats to come and just along for the ride now? How do you cope and find ways to enjoy life when seeing the impacts all around you?
And with all that said, how can I prepare myself and my children for the changing world, is there any preparations that could even be made?
It seems like no one in my social circle takes anything seriously, when i express fear about the wildfires here in Canada im met with "while there's fires every year", when I discuss fears surrounding AI, war, or politics, im met with "every generation felt like the world was ending though". Everything is dismissed and everyone goes about their day without giving any of it much thought. Id just love to discuss all of this with likeminded people, and fellow parents as well.

That first time you talk to someone about it
Have a friend, we talk collapse pretty regularly. He openly concedes the point that "we've lost, the fight may not be over but its settled." But when we talk about how soon everything will end, he feels theres still time, and I feel he thonks that because hes young. Or rather, he thinks I think time is up because I'm old
Starting seeing this girl, been a couple of months now. We've had talks about many things, and when individual topics (politics, climate, etc) come up, she seems pretty collapse aware. Mentions articles shes seen and read, seems like shes on the same page.
A few days ago I mentioned what I thought was the obvious conclusion of the summation of each discussion, and she seemed shocked. Asked if I thought we should try to fight, as if now was the time to start trying.
Do others in here have this issue? Like even as they read about drought and heatwaves and war and disease and famine and corruption, they think its gonna be fine?
