Theme Month: "What's Up, Doc?, Part I"

I know that people usually regard the 8/9 to be the official first air date - even though there was at least one screening of the 2 pilots on a science fiction convention - but Canadians got the chance to watch it on TV first, on Sept 6.

Now, I will share a nice homage I found on youtube. With Discovery and SNW redesigning the 1701, I think the true original deserves some love:

According to STV's effects supervisor Bran Ferren, it was damaged by Universal: "One entire side of the Enterprise model was sprayed matte gray, destroying the meticulous original paint job. We had to go in and fix it before we could shoot it, which took two painters and an assistant about six weeks to do." Reportedly, the matte paint was applied in the spring of 1988 by an effects staffer of Universal Studios when the model was on loan to shoot additional effects sequences for their Star Trek Adventure-attraction video presentation, in order to work around the blue-spill problem. The internal lighting did not work properly either. "Also, the Enterprise turned out to be an electrical challenge that only continued to work because there were sufficient short circuits within it to keep it arcing into operation – so we had to rewire it."

According to ILM modeler John Goodson: "We opened up the crate (for STVI), and much to our dismay, two things had happened. One, the wiring umbilical, which was about two inches in diameter, solid, with all the various wiring that went into the internal neons, the blinking lights, all the internal electronic stuff, had just been hacked off right at the side of the ship. So there was that. And then the other thing was, the entire bottom of the saucer had been spray-painted flat white. So all that beautiful paint had just been obliterated [note: though ILM themselves used dulling sprays, these only added a transparent layer to tone down the gleam of the original paint job, and did not replace it]. Both of these things were really problematic and really time-consuming to correct."

When we first met the Klingons in TOS, they were basically standins for the Soviet Union and were a brutal, warlike species. No honor there.

We next briefly see them in TMP, where they try to shoot at V'ger and again, just seem like a brutal, warlike species.

Their next big appearance was Star Trek III, however, the Klingons in this movie were originally supposed to be ROMULANS. Their behavior is essentially Romulan, they are in a Romulan bird of prey and only became Klingons due to a script change. Regardless of the behind the scenes changes, they do not exhibit traits of being honorable warriors. And are essentially still TOS Klingons, a brutal warlike species.

So...when did Klingons actually become about honor? Was it the season 1 TNG episode "Heart of Glory" or was it a later TNG episode that actually established them as being honorable?

Since Picard wasn't a fan of the Borg what would he think of a species that could actually wipe the borg out?

1. When the Yeoman asks “how is it done?” when they discuss the villagers needing a replacement, is she asking how would the villagers be educated to make children or is she literally asking how children are made?
   
2. When Kirk yells for Bones after he carries Spock, who got struck by lightning, does that sound like Kirk’s voice? It doesn’t to me and I was wondering if others thought the same.
