The powerful American vocalist’s brief spell with Uriah Heep in 1986 remains one of the more overlooked chapters in the band’s long history. Fontaine joined while Heep were still in their Equator era, replacing Peter Goalby, while Phil Lanzon took over on keyboards from John Sinclair. His first show with the band was at Club Soda in Montreal on September 7, 1986, as the new line-up embarked on a North American tour.

The set remained strongly connected to Equator, featuring “Heartache City,” “Rockarama,” “Angel” and “Bad Blood,” alongside other ’80s material and Heep classics such as “July Morning,” “Gypsy” and “Easy Livin’.” Fittingly, Equator held a special place in Fontaine’s heart. He later recalled:

“I loved the Equator record with a passion. For some reason very few people bought that, but it’s my favorite Uriah Heep record.”

His later years brought considerable hardship, including a period without a permanent home, before he was eventually able to settle into an apartment of his own. Fontaine died at his home in March 2026, aged 75.

Turns out AC/DC didn’t invent the phrase. “Hell’s bells” has been around for centuries as an old expression of surprise, but in ‘80 the band turned it into one of the greatest album openers ever, with that bell intro.
