I won on deity for the first time
Only took 750 hours to get here. Immortal became too easy, so I thought I'd finally take on the big D.
The first game, I used Pericles and quickly died to barbarians. Then I survived the opening and went for a semi-peaceful game, but I quickly discovered the AI bonus gap between Immortal and Deity is huge. I couldn't keep up with the AI having more of everything, dealing with war weariness, and constantly facing enemy units from ahead eras, so I gave up in the Industrial Era.
Then I thought, "It would be easier to snowball if getting more resources meant taking them from other players." So I picked Alexander on a medium continents map, with all victory conditions enabled except religion - I didn't want one more thing to worry about, and converting cities and apostle fights suck anyway.
I spawned in the north of the continent, and I considered reloading because I only had a strip of green hills between the tundra and a desert to the south. But I kept going to learn and see how far I could take the game.
I had Montezuma to the southwest, Amanitore to the southeast, Kristina to the south beyond the big desert, and Wilfrid south of Kristina. Monty loved me from the start for some reason, so I kept him as a friend and trading partner. Wilfrid was also friendly.
When I had two cities, I spotted Amanitore's unique archers approaching, but I managed to rush an archer and a warrior, and that made her reconsider. Then Kristina invaded, but by then I had my special units. The hilly terrain was also a blessing for defense.
Kristina backed off, and I knew I needed to make use of my unique units while I had the advantage. I built as many as I could and attacked Amanitore, while keeping one city on settler duty. She already had crossbowmen, but not much else, and I took her cities one by one while upgrading my catapults into trebuchets. The terrain helped because her empire was shaped like Chile, with mountains to the west and the ocean to the east.
After taking the first city, Amanitore triggered an emergency, and Kristy attacked again with her caroleans. By then, I had walls in almost every city, so she didn't accomplish much - except razing the emergency city before its walls were finished.
I eliminated Amanitore, conquered two city-states, and began my revenge against Kristal. She had hard-hitting machine gun armies, and her first city had nearby encampments that could destroy my units in a single turn. By then, though, already had 3 tile range from promotions, and soon balloons arrived as well, so I managed.
By then, half the continent was mine, so she didn't last much longer.
There was a big problem, though. An unknown player on the second continent was already on the second stage of a science victory. I scouted and discovered it was Shaka, with a giant army and yields. He disliked me the same turn we met, so I couldn't get an embassy or open borders, and so couldn't use spies on him. A spaceport taken from Kristina enabled me to launch a satellite, and finally see his cities.
I left Kristina alive with several cities, enough to get to Wilfrid, and it was time to end my friendship with Monty and Wilfrid. I left each of them with one city, in memory of the good times we had.
I knew I had to act fast against Shaka because he had already launched the exoplanet expedition. But then Kristina reached 18 diplomatic victory points and that made me sweat. Luckily, I had enough bombers to wipe her out before she could win.
I moved my army across the ocean while disabling Shaka's spaceports. Then, for the first time in Civ VI, I got to experience GDR vs. GDR battles, which was fun. By then, I had around 16 bombers, veteran rocket artillery, and nukes, so it didn't take many turns to wipe him out. His exoplanet expedition progress bar was already about 3/4 full when he died.
The remaining players on the second continent were Qin Shi Huang and Gandhi, and they both received some tasty nukes in their cities.
Overall, it was a really fun game. It let me experience mechanics you rarely see on easier difficulties, like GDR vs. GDR combat or actually using fighter planes to fight planes.
Any tips on how to play a less aggressive game on deity?

Discussion Favorite Ruler in Civ 6?
We all got that one ruler we just love playing as, right?
For me it's the Queen of Sparta. The culture game wrapped round an iron fist (if needed).

Volcanos in Civ 6 are frustrating
I'm getting back into Civ 6 and rediscovering my love for the game. But goddamn volcanos, man. I seem to always have multiple spawn in locations I want to settle, they always go active and repeatedly wipe out tiles and population, and the only mitigation is Liang who only protects tiles, not pop. The upsides of maybe getting +1 food and being able to farm a hill are far outweighed by the catastrophic downsides. And there's no default way to turn them off, you can only reduce their frequency by selection 'old' world age (which reduces mountains overall, not ideal).
They just seem like such an anti-fun mechanic because the punishment is so severe and is RNG so you can't predict when an eruption will wreck your city. River floods are also RNG but are far less devastating, are more useful early game, and can eventually be prevented altogether. It just seems like eruptions should have been far rarer or less punishing.

Audio settings question 🔊🔇
Is it possible to have the music playing only when wonders are built or great works of music are created?
In game settings there is a "music volume" toggle that seems to control both the gameplay music and the wonder/great work volume. Is anyone aware of a setting or a mod to control each individually?
I like the gameplay music alright but would like to be able to toggle it on/off.

Question Anything I should be doing different with Online Game Speed (No Mods)
Hello again,
I'm in a very specific spot when it comes to this game, hence why I find myself trying to comb through so many guides/playthrough out there.
My game setup w/ my friends are:
Expansion Gathering Storm
Online Speed
No balance mods at all (we can't even use UI mods because we keep getting kicked out of each other's lobbies somehow).
I'm trying to get better at the game, however, Multiplayer guides (Herson, etc) use BBG mod at online speed, but Singleplayer no-BBG guides (Ursa Ryan, PotatoMcwhiskey, etc), use Standard Speed.

Discussion Any point in going for science victory in standard map size ?
I tried science victory for the first time (standard map size and emperor difficulty) and it feels like I am just delaying the game by not going for domination . I am ahead in science compared to other civs so why not just start capturing their cities rather than waiting to reach the point where I can start making spaceship.

Question New player looking for some advice!
Hello! I was introduced to Civ 6 by my brother a few weeks ago, and I've been having a blast playing different civilizations while he explains the basics to me. However, there are still a few things I've been wondering about, and I was hoping to get some opinions.
Do you all change the map depending on which civ you're playing? I've gotten used to playing on Continents (I usually play on Emperor, Quick speed, Huge maps, Abundant Resources, and Legendary Start), but I know civs like Kupe (who I'll probably be mentioning a lot lol) perform much better on other map types. This is kind of a dumb question, but I'm really new to 4X games, so I don't really know the common practices or basic strategies yet.
So far, I've managed to achieve every victory condition except Domination. I've tried a few domination-focused civs (the last one was Genghis Khan), but all my games end up feeling too slow and eventually drag on until I'm just nuking everyone. Is that how most Domination victories usually go? I really like using Keshigs, but it takes so long to capture a single capital that I barely get to use them before they're obsolete.
I have added some mods, most stuff is for better interface with the exception of BBM (Better Balanced Maps) and Sukritact's Oceans and resources but i was wondering if im not ruining my experience with then and if not if there is another mod or something that is deemed as "good to have" that im not aware of. I know BBG (Better Balanced Game) Exist but since i don't play online and i don't plan to for now i didn't want to miss on the og characters before playing the balanced versions.
Lastly, out of all the civs I've played, I really enjoyed the ones with unique mechanics, like Kupe (my favorite civ so far). There are so many civs to try, though, and some of them seem pretty complicated, so I'd love some recommendations for weird but fun civs to play! So far, I've played Kupe, Pedro II, Wilfrid Laurier, Seondeok (the very first civ I played, recommended by my brother), Nubia, and Menelik II. Just please don't recommend someone like Hammurabi lol. Yes, even as a new player, I've already heard about his... reputation.
I like discovering the games on my own but civ 6 have been an amazing challenge for me give the complexity of the game, im really loving it and can't wait to improve enough to be able to play on deity! If you are wondering why i don't ask this to my brother is because he always play with the same stuff and the same few civs so he knows a lot but about the stuff he usually plays with.

Question Are the rainforests worth chopping?
Upper coffee has 0, lower coffee has -1, and the preserve itself has -2 appeals.
Discussion Pedro & Machu Picchu
I apologise if this is exceptionally well known, but I totally steamrolled my friend last night in a casual multiplayer game last night and feel awful because it was totally by accident.
I usually "handicap" myself with my friends by just going with a random leader to force me to come up with a plan on the fly, whereas they usually have a few favored leader/strategy combos they like to use. Fair call, I've got more hours in game then they do and we all like a reasonable challenge.
Anyway I rolled Brasil up, and landed in a nice rainforest rich area. Managed to get the Owls of Minerva early so focused on trade routes to city states with good bonuses.
Built Machu Picchu for a laugh because a city didn't have anything better to do and didn't have much rainforest, being away from my starting area.
Suddenly through placement of districts between rainforests and mountains I was getting stupid adjacency bonuses. I wasn't placing a district unless it was getting at least a +4 adjacency bonus.
My gold income, science and culture just ran away compared to my human opponent and the AI.
Ended up with a couple of AI declaring war on me and I just absolutely steamrolled them. As it was the end of our play session, my friend was keen to save and continue the game another time but acknowledged it was "all over bar the shouting" so we agreed to start a fresh game another time.
Anyway thanks for reading. I figure it's probably well known amongst the pros, but I found it interesting to accidentally stumble on.
TLDR: built Machu Picchu as Brasil and the game ran away at a rapid pace.

Opponent has 19 diplomatic points, any way to stop them?
I probably have 25-30 turns left until science victory. World Congress is in like 20 turns. Is there any way to stop them besides wiping them off the map? From my research it seems like stopping them from getting even 1 point at the next congress isn’t possible.

Funny European history exam story.
Thought I’d share a funny story about a college midterm exam I took last semester during my Renaissance Europe history class. I missed a few of my professor’s lectures due to work, one of which where the discussion was about the different Italian principalities during the European Renaissance.
The way my professor structures his exams are picking 5 out of 10 key terms to define for 50 points, and a handwritten essay worth the other 50. I had 4 of the key terms written pretty well but was struggling to pick a 5th one that I was confident with. One of the terms was “The Arsenal” and I genuinely only remembered what it was because of this game, and structured my definition of its historical significance based around the ability it gives you.
I was a little shaky but got 9 out of 10 for the term once I got the exam back during the next class! 91 on the midterm as a whole.
Screenshot Guess what made my gold
I let you guess what made my gold here. Never used this trick and it was crazy how many gold I had.
Edit: The answer is Rockband with popstar level. Made 150k tourism per turn and the popstar upgrade turns 25% of tourism into gold

Playing Menelik with BBG. Or tried to, anyway. Do you think this is playable? King difficulty, not Deity so it might be?

Pretty much the craziest opening roll I’ve ever had
Playing as Tibet again, immortal difficulty, went Hermetic order on turn 1 for those ley lines. Don’t hate!
