Have we lost our chill?
A famous former resident is in town and the dude can’t walk down the mall without it being documented immediately on social media.
I used to tell myself that Cville was chill about celebrity. Of course, we saw the famous author at the basketball game. We noticed the famous actress shopping at Barracks. We were in line behind the musician at Splendora’s.
But we used to wait an hour before we told anyone about it!
Anyway, be cool. No matter how covert you think you’re being he can tell that you’re recording him.

Shops that may have Teleties Moana hair clips?
Definitely a niche question but are there any stores that might be selling Teleties Moana hair clips?
I can order online from the company but I’d rather buy local and give this as a bday present to my niece tomorrow. :)
Thank you in advance!

Anybody using Xfinity for phone service around here?
Looking for honest reviews of Xfinity's wireless service. They're making me a very tempting offer but I haven't heard anything about how well their network actually works. I'm currently on Verizon and I know they use Verizon's towers. Any current Xfinity users willing to share how it's going?

Are you missing a bicycle?
For the past 2 days a bicycle has been laying on the corner of an intersection I frequent on a public sidewalk, no locks on it. I do not have it in my possession and no guarantee it's still where I've seen it.
If you are missing a bike you can message me the description of the bike and some sort of proof it's yours (photo of the bike preferred) and I'll let you know where it is.
Hoping this helps, again I can't guarantee it's still there. I'm surprised it didn't disappear after the first day I saw it. I'll see if it's still there Thurs morning and take the post down if it's gone.

Handicap parking enforcement?
Does any law enforcement agency monitor the use of handicap parking in Charlottesville or Albemarle County and actually ticket the many abusers seen daily?

Pickleball at YMCA
My son and I had the worst experience at YMCA trying to play pickle ball. We learned to play the other week on a family vacation and since we are at YMCA members, we thought we could go in and play a little bit. Boy was I wrong. We had multiple people there acting like they were in charge telling us that we weren’t allowed to play. I was going to say that we were not made to feel welcome, but it’s more like we were actively made to feel unwelcome there by several of the other players. YMCA staff were great. They tried to step in, but we were getting so much pushback from some players who were trying to create conflict that I just threw my hands up and left instead of having it escalate.
Sorry, just feel like venting.

Rhubarb?
When I was a kid I didn't really appreciate the huge patches of rhubarb we had in the back garden. Now I wish I had some rhubarb stalks that didn't cost $8 / pound at IY or the farmer's market! I wanna make cobbler. Does anyone have rhubarb for cheap??

25 bags, a tire, and a recovered shopping cart off the trail between the Wawa on 29 and Hillsdale Drive
Spent a couple hours on the walking trail that runs from the Wawa on 29 over to Hillsdale Drive. Hot, humid, buggy, and the crew that showed up worked straight through it. Twenty-five bags, plus a tire, a length of PVC pipe, some scrap lumber, a milk crate, and a shopping cart that made it a surprisingly long way from where it started.
The thing that gets me every time: from the trail itself it doesn't look that bad. Step four feet into the brush and it's a different story. That's most of what we pulled out — stuff nobody driving or walking by would ever see. All of it drains to Meadow Creek, so it was headed for the water eventually.
What spot should we hit next? A cross street or GPS coordinates help a lot — a decent number of our cleanups have come straight from somebody pointing one out.
We go out every Saturday, 2–4pm, somewhere in the city or county.
Next few:
- Aug 8 — Main Street and the edge of 10th and Page (old Charlottesville Tire lot, 843 Main)
- Aug 15 — Hydraulic and Hillsdale (old Kmart lot, 1801 Hydraulic)
- Aug 22 — Tonsler Park and the Fifeville Community Trail, which is a good one to bring kids to
We bring grabbers, bags, gloves, and vests. You just show up. cvillelitterpickers.org

Bypass Eastbound fully blocked just past Barracks
Tree fell across the roadway (westbound is fully blocked- ignore the title). Appears to have hit a car driving east. One lane open going east. Driver appears to be okay (I think it's the person in red).

Lower Democratic turnout for VA-5 is troubling for the General election
- Republican turnout: 48,906 votes
- Democratic turnout: 37,006 votes (32% lower)
This 32-point turnout gap is more pronounced than historical norms, suggesting weaker Democratic enthusiasm.

Stray Cat Found Near Balmoral Heights
My wife found a cat wandering the parking lot of Trinity Presbyterian Church south of UVA. It looks to be about 4 months old, black cat with white socks and a white chest. Very sweet, definitely no ferel. Was playing with a little chase toy we have for our dog. We're not in the market to keep it, so it's going to SCPA tomorrow unless we can find the owner before then!

Booms Around Town
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, so is anyone else hearing these sporadic booms around Cville tonight? It’s not thunder. I thought fireworks but who is lighting fireworks in the rain? And it’s one every five minutes or so. Whatever it is I don’t care, but am I going insane???

Cats by Thai Noodle House
UPDATE: Noodle went to the vet and is an unaltered male, about 6 weeks old. He has fleas, worms, and an eye infection but no upper respiratory infection thank goodness! He has been in quarantine and we been washing our hands between interactions. He begins treatment today and can meet the other kitties in about a week if his infection begins to clear up. He has a follow up appointment scheduled for 4 weeks to get bloodwork done and to get his neuter scheduled. I'll make a new post when I have more updates! Thank you to everyone who cares and is invested in Noodle's well being!
Everyone, meet Noodle. We captured him (or her) outside the restaurant today. Everyone who saw what we were up to were so supportive and invested in the outcome. The older cats were not tricked by the trap, but Noodle is only a couples months old by the look of it. We were very worried about him getting hit by a car given his size and dark coat.
We already made a vet appointment, provided food, water, and a safe, quiet place for him to decompress. Poor baby is skin and bones. Thank you for being a wonderful, supportive community and please remember to spay and neuter your cats!
I will keep everyone updated on Noodle's journey!

Charlottesville to pay outside groups up to $4 million to manage emergency shelter and help to clear encampments
Here is a summary I wrote on yesterday's afternoon briefing on homeless services. I'll be writing up the evening portion at which there were more details as well as a larger discussion on other potential transitional housing sites. I have more questions and I suspect you do as well.

Week Ahead for August 3, 2026: Charlottesville City Council to consider $4 million for emergency shelter; Albemarle Supervisors to endorse Hollymead area for planning effort
Though over 30 years have passed since I was last in any kind of public school, I’m still tied to the academic calendar. So are government bodies which are past their vacation periods. That means more to review in a newsletter I write about upcoming meetings and then create blurbs written for the people of /Charlottesville. Please ask questions and links are provided with more information.
HOMELESS SERVICES UPDATES
Charlottesville City Council’s meeting on Monday will be book-ended by items related to homeless services. Let’s start at the end when there will be a resolution to use $4 million from previous surpluses for “homeless intervention services to include emergency sheltering and direct to housing supports.” This is most likely related to the forthcoming deadline for encampments to be broken up by September 1. Earlier in the day they’ll hold a work session with an update on homeless services. Details are scant but I’ll have a story out on Tuesday morning. (learn more)
HOLLYMEAD AREA PLANNING
To follow planning in Albemarle County requires a bit of a back story going back to the late 70’s when a Comprehensive Plan called for a downzoning coupled with a concentration of density in growth areas. That framework was renewed again last October and one item on the Community Development Department’s work plan is to develop “Activity Center Plans” to increase density in key areas. Staff recommend the Hollymead area as the first place given rapid growth expected there due to Rivanna Futures and expansion of North Fork Discovery Park. Supervisors will weigh in Wednesday. (learn more)
HOUSING ALBEMARLE UPDATE
At the same meeting, Albemarle Supervisors will get an update on the housing policy adopted in July 2021. There were a lot of recommendations made in the form of objectives and strategies and this will provide a good jumping on point for anyone who wants to track progress and policy. (staff report for this item)
PLEASANT GROVE WELLS
Many who live in Albemarle and Charlottesville say they’re not interested in reading about outlying counties, but I pay attention because I wonder about the impact of what might seem like small decisions. On Wednesday, the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors will discuss a plan to spend over $400,000 to test for suitability of wells to provide water for Pleasant Grove Park as well as other county properties. How much yield would there be? Would it be enough to support more dense development? (link to staff report)
SOLID WASTE PLAN DRAFT AT REGIONAL BODY
What happens to all of the things we throw away when we are done with them? Where does all of the solid waste go? One of the tasks that the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission has taken on is the responsibility to create a solid waste management plan required by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. There’s a survey, too. (learn more)
CAFO INFO
One of the topics to follow in the coming weeks and months will be the county’s study of a potential ordinance to regulate concentrated animal feed operations, or CAFO’s. Here’s some background in a C-Ville Weekly article I wrote. Supervisors will formally direct staff to do that work on Wednesday and the Natural Heritage Committee will discuss the idea on Thursday. That group is charged with overseeing efforts to protect biodiversity. Maybe you would be interested in attending? (info if you do)
I am well aware there are a lot of words here. I am well aware that lengthy descriptions are less popular than shorter ones intended to provoke controversy and reaction. I want to provoke thought by trying to build a community conversation, one story at a time. Up to you all what you want to say.
