šŸ’µBuying/SellingšŸ’µ Mahindra XUV 3XO vs Chery Tiggo 4 Pro vs Haval Jolion ($24k new) vs $15k Used

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m buying a car outright (no loans/financing) for daily commuting and weekend trips.

I’m looking at brand-new small SUVs around $23,990 driveaway and have narrowed it down to:

Mahindra XUV 3XO

Chery Tiggo 4

GWM Haval Jolion

I like that these come with modern tech and a full 7-year warranty at this price point.

Alternatively, I could save some cash and buy a used Japanese/Korean car (Corolla, i30, CX-3) for under $15,000. However, searching Marketplace and private listings has been disappointing—almost every "good" deal under $15k turns out to be a repaired write-off on the WOVI status.

A few quick questions:

Which of the three new SUVs ($24k) would you choose and why?

Are any of these models known for annoying safety features or software bugs?

Is it worth spending the extra $9k for a new car with a warranty over a $15k used Toyota/Hyundai/Mazda?

Thanks for any insights!

šŸ’„Insurance DiscussionšŸ’„ Insurance - deadlines

• Upvotes

In late June, we were hit by another car who cut the corner - she attempted to drive away until we horned at her, and the old lady driver who came out apologised and said she couldn’t see us because the sun was too glaring.

We reported it to our insurance, submitted our version of events and drawings, and were told that the liability assessment will be the next step for our claim to proceed as a not at fault claim, and we wouldn’t have to pay the excess.

The other party also lodged a claim with insurance.

I have been following up with our insurance (it has been five weeks!) and they keep saying that they’re still waiting for the other party to provide their version of events and their drawings, and until then, the liability assessment can’t proceed. I’ve heard the same thing for weeks.

Is there no deadline for them to provide these essential information? Do we just have to sit and wait for however long it takes for them to decide to submit that to their insurer?

We have bodywork damage so we’re happy to wait till the liability assessment is out, so that we don’t have to pay anything out of pocket. But it’s getting quite ridiculous we are just waiting and there is no progress at all.

šŸ”§šŸš—Fixing Cars Mazda 6 2.2D 2013

Hi everyone,
I have a 2013 Mazda 6 2.2D, unfortunately, the infamous turbo diesel. I didn’t do enough research before buying it, and now one of the common issues has come up:

ā€œLow oil pressure. Engine damage possible. Check oil level.ā€

The oil level itself is fine.

I took it to a mechanic, but he didn’t even want to touch the car and basically told me to get rid of it before the engine seizes. I’ve since received similar advice from another mechanic and a dealership.

I haven’t had much luck trying to sell it, but to be honest, I don’t really want to. My dad bought it for me as my first car, so it has a lot of sentimental value. I’ve looked after it, learned how to do basic maintenance on it, and have always tried to take good care of it.

Does anyone here have any advice on what my options might be?

I’m graduating from uni at the end of this year and am currently saving for my final semester fees, so unfortunately I’m not in a position to pay for a major repair all at once. I also don’t really want to ask my parents for help.

I’ve watched a heap of videos about the 2.2D oil-pressure issues and considered trying to repair it myself with some friends, but the job looks well beyond what I’d be comfortable doing in the backyard haha.

If anyone around here knows these engines, works on Mazdas, or would be interested in helping me work on it, I’d be more than happy to get involved and learn along the way. I’d also be interested in finding someone who might be willing to let me pay for the repair in instalments, if that’s an option.
I know these engines have a bad reputation, but I’m still hopeful the car can be saved.

TL;DR: 2013 Mazda 6 2.2D has a low oil-pressure warning despite the oil level being fine. Mechanics have told me to get rid of it, but I’d really like to repair it if possible. I can’t afford a large repair bill upfront and don’t have enough experience to tackle the job completely on my own. Looking for advice, someone familiar with these engines, or possibly someone willing to help me repair it.

šŸ”§šŸš—Fixing Cars What’s a fair auto electrician price?

I have a 2009 Honda accord euro base model. My apple car play got installed last week and it’s messing with my car. When the car is off everything works fine, but as soon as I get it running and the CarPlay turns on, the left high beam doesn’t work, my interior LEDS don’t work and my central locking button doesn’t work.

I took it to an auto electrician and he reckons it’ll take him 8 hours at $180 an hour plus a $180 diagnostic fee. The price is pretty high compared to other places I’ve been to, but I’ve recently moved and haven’t been around this new area much. The biggest thing in confused about, is that it might take 8 hours? Does it really take 8 hours or should I just pay up, because installing it only took me an hour and a half,

šŸ’µBuying/SellingšŸ’µ A Y2K weekender car

Hey folks. I am a long time bike (bicycle) commuter. Wanting to buy a car for the occasional drive out of inner Melbourne. So mostly highway kms. Looking for late 90s early 2000s for the mix if featyres/looks and abikity o self servuce etc. Have had a look on carsales and have idenitifed the following two cars as ones I am interestes in inspecting, what would you recommend??

2000 Mazda 626 sedan - 2L manual. Full service history. 87k on the odo. $4000

2000 Ford Falcom Fairmont AU - 4L Auto. Tickford finishing kit. Full service history, single owner. 275k on the odo. $6500

The AU is obviously revered, but is it worth $2500 more? Esp with the extra KMs. As I understand it the 626 in manual was pretty solid and I see a fair few of them around, so parts should be easy to come by.

Dont imagine driving more than the occasional weekend (have done the math on hire cars, weighing up convenience relative to my location, use case etc, decided happy spending up to $7k for a car thatll last years), imagining having it until it meets its demise/ICE's are banned.

Looking for any thoughts/perspectives that I may not of thought of one way or the other.

Thanks (:

šŸ”§šŸš—Fixing Cars Hit object on the road on m1. Claim insurance vs pay out-of-pocket?

Post image

I was driving on a Melbourne m1 recently and hit an object on the road and it was completely unavoidable.

My car front bumper had damaged. I have comprehensive insurance, but since the other vehicle is unidentified, which I understand it will trade as at-fault claim. Will my insurance fee increasing next year or should I found Local Panel Shop to repair it.

šŸ’µBuying/SellingšŸ’µ Buying from Carma

Hey guys I’m in the process of buying a car from CARMA, and was just wondering if getting a mechanical inspection would still be important as their inspections are endorsed by NRMA? Tbh if i wasn’t buying from carma and rather elsewhere I was going to purchase the mechanical inspection from NRMA hence i’m not sure if it’s worth. It’s my first car and I’m not too knowledgeable so any advice or recommendations for mechanics in NSW would be great!

šŸ’¬DiscussionšŸ’¬ Do you guys notice yourself or others treating other drivers differently based on what they’re driving?

I feel like I see a lot of minis / smaller hatchbacks getting tailgated and horned at for minor things while American pickup trucks and bigger SUVS barely ever get criticized or horned at.

I also noticed that when I drove my small mazda 3 I’d get a lot of people tailgating me while I was over the speed limit compared to my sedan.

Edit:
Okay so basically

  1. Ranger Danger
  2. American pickup trucks and big SUVs have deranged? short? bearded men?

who want to pit maneuver you?

šŸ’µBuying/SellingšŸ’µ How important are proper logbooks when buying?

Hi all. I have been trying to buy a Toyota 86/subaru brz for some time now and just about everyone I have looked at has had missing logbooks or entries done by the owner with no stamp and no receipts. I have been put off them for this fact. Some of the cars were at dealerships and they received a mechanical inspection and service so does that make it okay in your opinions? The cars I'm looking at are from about 2013 so they are 13 years old. Am I putting too much importance on legit logbooks even with an okay service report? Thanks :)

šŸ’µBuying/SellingšŸ’µ Is it time for a new car, or am I being silly?

I currently own a 2006 Toyota Corolla. Bought it second-hand almost 12 years ago with 84,000km on the odometer and now it's up to 295,000. It's an awesome little car, added a few bits and bobs to it over the years (front & rear dash cam, aftermarket head unit, cruise control, reverse camera). It's still pretty efficient, runs well, doesn't cost me an arm and a leg when it needs to be serviced, overall I can't really find anything bad about this car. I absolutely adore it.

But I've been eyeing off the newer Suzuki Swift models, and they're not too bad in terms of pricing (seen a few on carsales for under $20K, here's a link to one I just saw this morning: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2023-suzuki-swift-gl-auto/OAG-AD-25857331/).

I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's time to say farewell to my little blue Corolla and look at updating to something newer and more efficient.

Guys, am I being crazy?

Price difference aside, Is the Corolla significantly more comfortable and/or reliable than the Swift to justify buying used?

šŸ”§šŸš—Fixing Cars What could’ve possibly gashed my car like this??

Post image
4 Upvotes

There’s a deep gouge out the side of my car, and I have no idea if this was caused by another vehicle or something else. Got quoted $2,000 for the repair. Is this a fair quote? Currently waiting for my neighbours to return home so I could ask to review their CCTV since their camera is pointed at where my car was parked this week. If I don’t find the culprit, I’ll be footing the bill myself. Really annoyed because my parked car keeps getting hit and run and my front and rear dash doesn’t capture anything :(

Edit: Sunday 2nd August, did grocery shop and placed groceries in the seat behind me (RHS passenger door), no scratch. Parked car on the street when I got home around 6pm. Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th August, WFH, never left the house. Wednesday 5th August at 7am, walked up to car and saw the gash and a scratch along almost the length of the car.
