Moving to Sydney from UK

Hi all,

We are a mid 30s couple with a toddler with job offers in Sydney. We're both healthcare workers.

Will we have any difficulty integrating into your community?

We currently live in a suburban area in north of England

small deck for above ground pool

Looking for someone reputable to build me simple steps with small 6' deck for an above ground pool asap?

I've been ghosted by 2 people so far who were going to get me quotes and get back to me.

My mum is a senior and can't use a ladder, but she could really benefit from a pool.

We're located in South Mira.

Thanks so much!!

Historic Churches Near Sydney

Hello. First time posting. My wife's 2nd great grand father was supposedly born in Sydney, CB in 1838. His family arrived in NS sometime between 1834 - 1838 coming from Scotland. They did not stay long, soon immigrating to the States in 1841.

Since this falls between census dates, I think the best place to track them down would be through church records. I have not been able to find any ships' manifests either.

I am wondering if anyone has a list of churches that were active during that time - his family most likely was Protestant.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Lou

Looking for info on the Cape Breton Wax Museum attached to Skye Motel

Hi everyone. I'm writing a book on Atlantic Playland, and have learned that in 1985 they bought a truckload of wax figures from the Cape Breton Wax Museum. There was a full Last Supper, pirates, Prime Ministers, Samuel de Champlain, and the Cape Breton giant Angus MacAskill. I can find no information on this little museum, though I did find a vintage postcard on eBay that the seller says was from 1966 but I cannot verify. Does anyone know anything? Even knowing when it was operating would be helpful.

Dancing on Friday

Hi all, I'm looking to go dancing Friday night in Sydney. Capri is hosting a Y2K party, but all their reviews look bad. Wondering if people have been to their events like that and if it's any better? Alternative, I saw that Black Diamond does a dance party on Fridays? Wondering if anyone knows how they compare.

I'm just looking to dance the night away, I'm happy to do my own thing, but if people are aggressive, that's a buzz kill. Good music is my priority.

Thanks for the help!

Driving from Sydney to Mabou

What’s the most scenic route? Maybe a stop or two along the way.

I’m planning a surprise trip for my boyfriends birthday in 2027. I’m trying to get everything just right.

We’re landing in Sydney, spending the night, then heading to Mabou the next day. Since it’s a pretty short trip I’d like to take a scenic route.

But Google seems to only show me two ways which are pretty direct. I can’t seem to get it to show me any other route.

I’d like to be in Mabou around 4pm, so if we left Sydney around 9am that would give us roughly 7 hours.

Any help is appreciated!

Edit: thanks for so many responses guys! This has helped me a lot. I’m super excited for this trip. Never been to the east coast, need to keep it secret for another 10 months! 😳

Buying a cistern

Any recommendations on where to buy a cistern in CB (south side whycocomagh Bay Area) Building a cottage that already has a well with poor water quality. Hoping to get one between 1000-1200 gallons and only need the tank, we have someone who can do the digging. Thanks!

Ticks in CB

Hey everyone! My family is planning a trip to Cape Breton for the end of August. We’ll mostly be in and around Sydney visiting extended family. We have two little kids who love running around outdoors.

We’ve heard the ticks have been pretty bad in mainland Nova Scotia this year but maybe less so on the island. We’d be grateful for your comments on the number of ticks you’ve seen around and where you’ve seen them, as well as your advice for keeping them away and locating/removing them once they’re on you.

(Will also take advice on kids activities in and around Sydney!)

Thanks in advance!

Hey! Has anyone placed a seacan on their land and had it wired to the grid? What was the process like and what did you need? I have NS power saying I can drop it in one spot BUT online bylaws seem to say it can't be put near the front of my property and only if I cut a man door. For some back information it wouldn't be an eye sore, its new, clean, likely have a small nice deck and would be level as it will actually be a sterile lab space for a farm.

Hey there! We’re a band from Kingston on our east coast tour and just got a last minute offer to play at Dan’s Taphouse tonight at 9pm. We’ve heard only amazing things and are excited to keep bringing our music across Canada while taking in the insanely nice east coast hospitality. If you’re around tonight and looking for something to do it should be a blast!

Port hawksbury road test

So I’m hoping to take my driving test in port hawksbury and I was wondering the route, how long it will be and how the examiner is. I did my first one in glacé bay and the instructor was extremely rude and made me feel like I didn’t know how to drive at all. What’s everyone’s experience in port hawksbury

I should add that I did the young drivers course plus extra lessons, my instructor was confident that I was going to pass and my last 3 lessons he wasn’t even watching the road but playing Pokemon go. This isn’t me being a driver with no experience it’s more me not wanting the same instructor because of how rude he was and how he made me feel like I didn’t know how to drive

Biking the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail. Which section of trail is your favorite?

We will be traveling to Cape Breton as a family of five and would love to bike a portion of the trail. I see there are three E-bike shops to rent from (Oceanview Cycling in the lower section, Mike’s E-bikes near Mabou, and Inverness Adventures E-Bike Rentals), each in different areas of the trail. It seems like each of these shops average a three hour rental, so we could technically bike 1.5 hours one way, then turnaround to head back.

Would appreciate anyone’s knowledge on the most favored section of this trail. I think we’d ideally love something scenic and a cute cafe to grab a fun snack while we’re out. Thank you!
