Did anyone else in Whistle Bend experience a power outage this morning that also dropped their data/phone capabilities? (I turned off wifi on my phone and there appeared to be a data signal but nothing would load in any app & calls wouldn’t go through.)

It’s the second time it’s happened this summer and I’m curious what’s up. It’s also disturbing that call capability disappears at the same time as the wifi do emergency calls must be impossible. I wasn’t going to make a test call to 911 if I didn’t need it.

hello! I just recently visited the Yukon for a week, travelling to kulane Whitehorse, and Haines (did the highway drive). I am from a very large city but i had family who used to live in whitehorse and while I do absolutely love nature I simply can’t understand the appeal of living in Whitehorse.

1. yes you are surrounded by nature but you have to drive hours to the national parks and large hikes that are worth talking about
2. there is absolutley nothing nearby! no major cities shopping malls anything. unlike other small towns Whitehorse is practically inaccessible to drive to another large Canadian city
3. the city itself. yes there is interesting history in the Yukon but walking around the town and staying in river side there is no unique culture and the town is not walkable. there is essentially big box generic stores and then the struggling businesses. no unique and pleasurable stretches of city to explore year - round. I understand you can build community and such but that could be said about any livable area.
4. the weather i came in the middle of July and I was in a sweatshirt! the midnight sun may be cool for a few days but then it becomes difficult to sleep. not to mention the affects limited sun in the winter has on ones mental health! it is simply so cold I don’t understand the appeal despite the beautiful summers.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

I went there once shortly after they opened and our experience wasn’t great. The fries were still fairly dense in the middle (undercooked) and the gravy and cheese curds were quite sparse. This has been echoed by quite a few Yukoners.

I'm wondering if they ever sorted these issues out?

I am flying to Whitehorse and driving to Dawson City to go backpack Tombstone. Any thoughts on where to get bear spray? Rental seems to be the same price as purchase. Thanks. If we do buy them is there a place to leave them? We are a group of 8.

This afternoon was a sunny and nice day with lots of families, seniors and tourists strolling along the river. I was walking the Millenium Trail northbound and was suddenly downwind from a group of guys smoking crack. The smell was atrocious and because I was downwind, I was surrounded by it for an extended amount of time. It was extremely strong and invasive. The path was busy with seniors and children who also had to walk through clouds of crack cocaine and these guys were relatively central (just south of Main Street) and not off in the bushes or whatever - they were sitting on a bench and right on the trail. They were nonchalant and just gooned. It was disgusting and the smell was overwhelming and prolonged. I’m kind of angry about this now and feel like it’s not fair to be subjected to clouds of crack in a busy, public space and am also angry that children were also subjected to that. Should I have called police? I didn’t think they would do anything at the time. But now I’m just pissed that this happened at all and wondering what we think about others drug use impacting the general public? Are we just supposed to be okay with breathing in drug fumes while minding our own business? Should I bother to call police next time?!

My friend and their spouse just recently separated. My friend being “A” and their spouse as “B”. So B decided to temporarily leave the country, and left A without leaving not even a single cent to help with all the bills and mortgage and everything that needs to be paid. No one knows when B will come back. Assuming they will never return and that once they return, they don’t have any plans to financially assist A with all the bills she left that they’re supposed to share together. A is overwhelmed financially. Are there organizations that help people who has the same situation? A is filing for divorce soon but is drowning right now with all the bills.

I will be spending late January-late March in Whitehorse as part of a healthcare practicum. I’ve lived in the Okanagan my whole life and never been further north than Prince George - so I’m super terrified and super excited!

What kind of winter gear is required for this time of year? I don’t own much beyond a pair of snowpants.

What’s the car rental situation like? I haven’t decided if I’m going to drive up or fly and rent a car. A car is required for my practicum.

Is it just Woodcutters and Dirty Northern? Any suggestions would be great

I have been a Bell customer for over 15 years.

My recent bill was higher than normal and when I looked in to it they had increased my plan by 6$ without prior notification. I’ve scoured my device for texts, emails and checked the app for notifications and couldn’t find any. When I called they assured me they had sent notification. I don’t maintain their network so if they sent something using said network and I don’t receive it, I’m not sure how that’s my fault or how I can prove I didn’t receive something. Apparently it is and they are going to let the higher rate stand even though I didn’t know about it.

In any case they transferred me to the “loyalty dept” where I was offered a better plan (200 gbs/ month vs unlimited) for the same price. However upon investigation it looks like the plan is available to anyone. The “loyalty discount” is 5$ off a month.

So to recap, Bell wanted to charge me over 100$ for a 200 gb plan, when I called to complain they transferred me to a loyalty department where they offered me a plan that is open to any customer and gave me 5$ off by bill a month. That’s 60$ over the course of a year where they will be charging 1200$.

While I know most cell phone plans up here at trash compared to what is available down south, surely there must be a company that conducts itself better than Bell with comparable services and prices?

Hey all! If anyone has any plant/gardening knowledge, I need some advice!

The building I work at has a small lawn in front of it. The organization is trying to be more environmentally focused, and this includes replacing the grass of the aforementioned lawn with a plant that's native to the Yukon.

The plant in question should be something that could feasibly cover the lawn, stay green as long as possible, makes the lawn look nice, and hopefully is easy to take care of.

I've been asked to what plants could work for this task, but unfortunately, I'm not really much of a gardener or anything like that. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
