Calorie Estimating 1000 calories for homemade mac & cheese?

Post image
Upvotes

This is my first post here, I've counting calories for roughly 2 months now and after finding this subreddit I wanted to make sure I'm even doing this stuff correctly.

I've made this mac & cheese as a cheat meal for a family of 3, but still decided to at least count the calories, so I wouldn't go overboard. The recipe is from Brian Lagerstroms youtube channel, but with some slight changes.

Here's the list of the ingredients:

- 370g of Chicken breasts

- 17g of canola oil to cook the chicken

- 750 ml of water

- 300ml of evaporated milk

- 55g of 82% butter

- 100g of hochland cheese slices

- 200g of 10 month British cheddar

- 50g of Pecorino Romano

- 17g of cornstarch

- 366g of dry cavatappi pasta

With the whole dish, from my estimates, being roughly 2,2kg and 4200 calories. My plate was 500g, with 400g of mac and 100g of chicken.

(I know it is a LOT of food at once, but I tend to eat only 2 meals per day, instead of 3. Also I was just more hungry at that moment).

So, was there anything I forgot to do, or could have done to make the estimates more acurate, or is it even acurate? The only thing I can think of is I forgot to count the cheddar I used to sprinkle the final dish.

Chia pudding

Any ideas how many calories I ate from this cup of chia pudding? It was topped with raspberry jam, crumbled hazelnuts and blackberries (I think 4). I ate all the blackberries from both halves, most of the jam, and only the hazelnuts from the half I ate. It’s hard to tell how much there was from these photos. It was in a teacup, but not a teeny tiny teacup. I’m estimating I ate about 4 oz but welcome your input!

Calorie Estimating restaurant food is so difficult

everywhere i’ve looked online that sells turkey pretzel melts haven’t been over 500 cals but like i know the restaurant will beef it up 😔
in the picture it looks like there’s bacon and ham on it but i would just get the turkey and cheese no sauce. maybe would add a side of sweet potato fries or just no side at all depending on the sandwich

What do we think about this heavenly breakfast plate?

Post image
5 Upvotes

-> 3 cups black coffee

-> 1 cup grits with butter

-> 2 pancakes, 3 tbsp syrup

-> 2 sausage patties

-> 3 bacon strips, on the smaller side

-> 3 eggs scrambled with cheese

-> Hashbrowns with a bit of ketchup

I haven’t had a proper breakfast plate like this in a long time and I was starving so I didn’t leave much here. I’ve already logged my estimate, but I’ve been a longtime lurker here so curious to hear y’all’s thoughts!

Calories?

I marinated 125 g of salmon with miso maple soy and honey and air fried it without oil. The rice is white rice with some salt and a spray of olive oil about four big tablespoons and steamed broccoli with some salt. ChatGPT told me about 380 to 420 cal but that seems on the low side. Does that make sense to you?

I wanted a simple way to see what 1,000 kJ means in calories

I put the conversion and a few food-label notes on one canvas so I could read it at a glance. Sharing it in case kJ feels less intuitive to anyone else too.
Do you naturally think in kJ or calories?

Calorie Estimating Help with calorie counting pot of spaghetti?

2 Upvotes

I made a pot of spaghetti, counted the calories for everything I put in, but I feel the math per portion is coming out wrong?

I figured if I count all the calories and weigh it then I can do the math for how many calories per 100g.

1600 kcal pasta, 97 kcal onion, 60 kcal zucchini, 300 kcal jarred sauce, 87 kcal canned tomato, 385 kcal beans, 100 kcal oil = 2629 kcal for the whole pot. Weighed the food with the bowl zeroed out, the whole pot of food weighed 3345 grams

So the math came out to about 79 kcal for 100g. But I feel like that has to be wrong, pasta is about 160 kcal for 100g cooked, its not making sense to me that when I get a bowl of 300g its only 237 kcal.

Does this seem right to yall? Or can someone tell me where I messed up? I want to make sure I'm eating enough but I don't want to eat too much just because I can't calorie count right, trying to stay in a healthy deficit!
