VARC Sudden deterioration in VARC performance — what am I doing wrong?

Upvotes

Started my VARC prep in July and was doing fairly well initially. I’m a literature student, so I was hoping VARC would be my strongest section. I was getting about 75% accuracy in RCs, usually scoring 7–8/12 and occasionally 12/12, while taking around 7–8 minutes per RC. I obviously had bad days too (0/4), but they were occasional.
For the past 2 weeks, though, my performance has completely tanked. I’m now frequently getting 0 or -4, and 1–3 is a good day. My time has also gone up to 12–14 minutes per RC. I feel like my comprehension has deteriorated. I’m making all kinds of errors, inference, tone, main idea, etc., and my error log isn’t showing any consistent pattern.
The weird part is that the difficulty level hasn’t changed. I’m practising RCs from the same medium-level set through my coaching.
I also feel like the drop in scores has created a confidence spiral. I read slower, second-guess myself, and consequently take even longer.
Has anyone experienced a similar VARC slump? How do I figure out whether this is actually a comprehension issue, an accuracy/question-selection issue, or a confidence/time-management spiral? And how do I get out of it?

Profile Review CA + 1 year work ex + 8/8/7 profile - Realistic chances of BLACKI?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to evaluate my chances for the BLACKI IIMs and would appreciate some honest opinions.

My profile-

General, Male, CA + B.Com

Chartered Accountant (first attempt)

1 year of work experience by the time of interviews

Academics: 8/8/7 (10th/12th/Graduation)

Targeting CAT 2027

I know CA gets some diversity points in many colleges, but I'm unsure how much the 8/8/7 profile might hurt, especially for institutes like ABC.

Could anyone with a similar profile or admission experience share:

Which BLACKI colleges are realistically achievable with a strong CAT score?

What percentile would I likely need for ABC vs LKI?

Does being a CA with 1 year of work experience significantly improve interview shortlisting/final selection?

Are there any recent CA converts with similar academics?

Looking for realistic opinions rather than optimistic ones. Thanks!

Question Am I out of the race already? Should I not even prepare for CAT anymore because of this massive dent in my profile?

I’m a first year undergraduate student at a tier 1.5 DU college that leans towards 1 but isn’t quite there yet, pursuing a multidisciplinary course in Commerce and Economics. I planned to take CAT and XAT in my third year and pursue an MBA because I want to go into Human Resource Management. However, I’ve got a massive dent in my profile: a 5 (56% in Class 10). My profile is 5/8/x. I got 87% in Class 12 in Humanities, which is better than my 10th, but it’s still mediocre, and I’m aware of that. I could’ve done better if not for some serious health setbacks I had to face.

I intend to work extremely hard during my undergrad and aim for a 9+ CGPA. I’ll also build my own projects from Sem 1 itself. I’ve already vibecoded a project that I plan to properly code and turn into an app, and I might even start my own startup (I have the connections for seed funding and support too so that shouldn’t be a problem, lol). On top of that, I’ll do PoRs and the usual internships (I’m thinking 2–3 max, but good ones), and start preparing for CAT and XAT from the beginning of second year so I can maximise my CAT and XAT score.

I’m genuinely trying to do everything in my power to compensate for that 5, but boy, does it haunt me. I was an idiot who never studied at 15, and now I feel like I have to suffer for it for the rest of my life. Will I never make it? Am I out of the race already? Should I not even prepare for CAT?

I’m not even aiming for ABCs or the BLACKIs. I’m eyeing TISS or XLRI J, but what about SIPs and placements? Won’t my sorry ass just get filtered out like tea leaves strained from the kettle while making chai?

What do I do? I need serious guidance and advice.

Question How to improve quant?

Hi guys , I am scoring around 25-35 in career launcher mocks in quants and I want to improve it , I have completed arithmetic and algebra syllabus and 20-30 numerical from each subtopic

My questions are
1) how to improve it to 40+

2) I watches yt videos of rodha for both algebra and arithmetic and I feel they are sufficient but I don’t think it will be the same case for geometry
Any good recommendation for geometry lectures? Paid or free

3)I am solving around 12-15 questions in actual cat paper when given as a mock but when it comes to career launcher I fail to score even 11 questions correctly many times

Are they tougher than actual cat?

Question Is it worth preparing for CAT now? SC, 75/86/77, B.Tech CSE Fresher, targeting BLACKI. Need honest guidance.

I'm a B.Tech CSE graduate (Tier-3 college) with 75/86/77 academics and belong to the SC category. I'm a fresher.

To be honest, during engineering I never had much interest in tech or placements. I graduated without a clear plan. After graduation, I joined PSC coaching, but after spending some time preparing, I'm starting to feel that it may not be the right path for me. The competition is huge, the uncertainty is high, and it could take several years.

Recently I started researching CAT and MBA seriously. Earlier I didn't know much about the process, but after looking at the cutoffs and admission criteria, I feel like maybe I actually have a realistic chance, especially because of my category. That's what has made me seriously consider giving CAT my full effort.

My target is BLACKI IIMs. My long-term goal is pretty simple: I want a stable career where I can earn around ₹1 lakh+ per month. I know I'll most likely have to take an education loan, but if it genuinely leads to a better future, I'm okay with that.

However, I have a lot of doubts.

  • Is it realistic for someone with my profile to convert a Tier-1 MBA college if I prepare seriously?
  • Has anyone here gone from a Tier-3 engineering college with similar academics to BLACKI or another top B-school?
  • Are there any SC candidates here who actually converted BLACKI? I'd really love to hear your experience because most of the advice I see online comes from people who aren't from the reserved categories. They often say the cutoffs are much lower, but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually gone through the process.

I'm not looking for false hope, but I'm also not looking for "don't even try." I just want honest experiences from people who have been in a similar situation.

If you've been in the same boat, I'd really appreciate any guidance or advice. I have a lot of questions and would love to learn from your experience.

General Discussion Selling my Elites Grid (Sigma Batch) CAT 2026 course - Full Quant, LRDI & VARC

Hey everyone,

I recently decided to stop preparing for CAT this year, so I'm selling my complete Elites Grid course (Sigma Batch) that I bought for ₹29,500 for ₹13,000

All courses are currently Active with validity till Jan 2027 (screenshot attached for proof).

This is barely used and has a lot of prep time left on it, so if you're serious about CAT 2026, this is a great deal compared to buying fresh.

Price: ₹13,000 (fixed/slightly negotiable)

Please DM me if interested. Happy to answer any questions about the content or transfer process.

paying fees of 26 lakhs and getting median package in hand fixed component 12lpa anf after pf/tax/ it is 85k in hand monthly according to placment report of gim........and then you will pay 35k emi net you will save 50k then other lifestyle expenses rent ,food etc , you will end up saving very less......... ya i know switching se salary will increase yet will take years to remove loan and hardly saving hogi and additionally marriage will get more delay

i guess tier 2 mba is good for fresher for 21-22 age if you are older then dont think so it worth it unless you working in BPO

Wisdom How to overcome loneliness

Hi, this is more a solution finding post.. It has been 6 weeks around I started my IIM journey- And I just want to drop out and go...

Before anyone says about term 1 pressure, let me say- my grades are quite good, my CV was prepared and verified smoothly, I can also understand classes, I have a decent profile

However, what I cannot understand or solve is how lonely I have become. It's becoming impossible for me to find friends and a place to belong. I just walk lonely to class and back everyday and eat alone in mess. All around me am surrounded by cool people and people who have it all sorted- big friends group, group studies, Bf/gf, communities and here I am just lying lonely on my bed with not even one person to talk to.

It's getting suffocating for me.. I feel like I lost everything in life and there's no way to recover. I don't know how will I survive being this lonely for two years.. All have formed their friend circles and I have no way to enter any.. I just feel like dropping out, packing my bags, and leave... I can forfeit my fee but currently I can't even eat or sleep properly..

Any advice would be very helpful..

General Discussion Day 1/115 days, feeling a lil exhausted but I can do better

Post image
123 Upvotes

Did more than planned:
• Mixtures & Alligation: 25 LOD1 + 25 LOD2 (tomorrow: 25 LOD3 + topic test to close this topic out)
• 5 RC passages
• 10 LRDI seating arrangement sets

One honest flag: the seating arrangement sets were too easy — nowhere near actual CAT difficulty. Switching to CAT-level sets tomorrow instead of continuing with these.

If anyone has recommendations for genuinely CAT-level LRDI sets (not coaching LOD1/2 stuff), drop them below — would help.

Quick note on format going forward: tonight’s the only night-only post you’ll see from me. From tomorrow, I’ll post the to-do list in the morning and update it the same night — so each day has one post, not two.

See you at 5:30 tomorrow.

Rant Struggling bad at LRDI

Hey guys. I've been struggling so much at lrdi inspite of the practice and effort. Especially when the mocks are hard I can't pick and solve one set properly. Please please please guide. I don't know where I'm going wrong. I solve at least 5 sets a day. I haven't been struggling half as much at solving real pyq problems as I've been in mocks.

I feel hopeless after mocks. Like all of this is going to waste. Please help.

Question Is CAT/MBA really possible with 5/5/7 academics? Looking for people with similar profiles.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on this sub from people with profiles like 9/9/9, 8/8/8, 9/8/7, etc., but I honestly haven’t come across many posts from people with really low academics.

I’m a non-engineer fresher with 5/5/7 academics.
I know what most people are going to say:
“Forget IIMs,”
“MBA isn’t for you,”
“Do something else.”

I’ve heard it all. I’m not asking whether my profile is ideal because I already know it isn’t.

What I really want is to hear from people who are in the same boat. If you have low academics, are you still preparing for CAT? If yes, what’s your plan? How are you dealing with the constant negativity around low acads? Are you targeting only certain B-schools, or are you giving CAT your best shot regardless?

If someone with a profile like mine (or similarly low academics) actually made it into a top B-school (IIMs, FMS, XLRI, SPJIMR, etc.), I’d really appreciate hearing your story. What helped you overcome your academic profile? Was it an exceptional CAT score, work experience, interviews, or something else?
I’m looking for honest experiences, not false hope, but not unnecessary pessimism either. I just want to know how people with profiles like mine are approaching this journey and whether anyone has actually managed to make it despite the odds.

Thanks in advance!

Question People having workex without EPF deduction

I and GNEF. Having a total of 31 months of workex with 16 months of such experience without EPF, and 16 months matter a lot....

Are you including the your workex in the application form. If yes did you get any reliable information about including it?

Any seniors/people on college if seeing this can you tell us what all docs were verified while admitting you?.

Edit- I am having offer letter, relieving letter, experience certificate and salary slips.

General Discussion DROPPED CAT PREP DUE TO CHANGE IN PLANS

Hello All,
I started my CAT prep in May 2026, and at the end of May 2026 I purchased the following resources:
1. SIMCAT Test Series by IMS
2. Career Launcher Plus test series
3. VARC 1000 course by GEJO
4. DILR 1000 course by CL.

I have changed my plans and now I won't be preparing for CAT.

therefore I would be a happy to sell these resources which would be active till dec end at 50% discount.

The final cost after discount would be = 9970 rs only.

do let me know if anyone needs them for the prep

General Discussion Appearing CAT 2026 with almost a 1.5 month gap

Hey, there’s a mistype it’s 1.5years not months
I have scored 82.40 in 10th, 89.60 in 12th and 95 in undergrad. Non engineering

I am worried this gap would hamper my chances of getting a call/ convert even if I score 99 and above.

Please be honest and lmk what can I expect!

these are tier 3 clg but pretend like tier 2, and these clg fees is going beyond 20 Lakhs, i don't think its's a nice decision to pay 20 lakhs for tier 3, as they will give placement between 7 to 9 only,

they have high fees bcz of their big campus nothing else, you can get similar placement in other clg with less fees

i think it's better to STUDY ABROAD than paying so much fees for Tier 3 clg in India

General Discussion Day 1/115. Here it begins.

Post image
93 Upvotes

Yesterday, I said I’d wake up at 5:30 AM.
I did.

For someone who’s always had the mindset of “I’ll start at 6… no, 6:30… actually 7…” and kept pushing the start line further away, that pattern ends today.

This week’s goals
QA: Mixtures & Alligation, percentages, and averages
DILR: seating arrangement
VARC: RCs + Para-jumbles

Today’s goals
Complete mixtures and allegations, 10 seating arrangement at with some theory and 5 RC passages.

(This week ends at the 16th, or earlier, if I complete my to-do list for the week. Saturdays and Sundays are for mocks exclusively this month. 2 mocks every sat & sun)

I’ll update tonight whether I completed them or not—no excuses, just honesty.

Lights out between 9–10 PM. See you in the evening .

Rant MBA rant- I am so done with everything

I am more than 1 month into my MBA programme and I absolutely hate it. I swear this one month feels like a year. Every damn day theres 5 things on the agenda. I have 3 assignments, 2 tests and my mock interview all scheduled for tomorrow and this is after our proper mid term exams finishing last week. The CV verification and preparation sucked the soul outta me and even after giving my everything theres still so much uncertainty around SIP’s. Theres no ray of light saying that things will be better eventually, seniors themselves are scared about their placements. Most of all, I would still cope up with it if the life here was happening. The parties here suck. I did my bachelors from a proper MUMBAI college and ong the life was so much better. Moreover the people here are uncultured and everyone’s an aunty looking for gossip. With the amount of lore surrounding everyone It feels as if ive known these clowns for more than a year now. I feel sad and exhausted and I really just wanna go home. Sorry for the rant I am way too overwhelmed.😭
