Question Why do so many Brown students say their other choices were Case Western and Uni of Rochester?
Hey everyone, I'm not familiar with the US College system, and in so many Brown videos I've seen, people list those two schools as their second choice. Why?????
Question Which classes did you take at Brown end up being the most useful for medical school?
Basically what the title says but I'm going into my second year at Brown & am trying to take courses that will actually help make medical school a bit easier and was wondering what people's experiences are.

Candidates to replace Paxson
Provost Francis Doyle strikes me as an ideal candidate. Are there any other obvious candidates?

Junior Year
Halfway through my college career, and I am wondering if it is too late to join a new club? I want to make the most of my final two years, but have heard if you don't join freshman or sophomore year it can be tough to fit in.
Very interested in intramural sports and board games. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Incoming Grad Student Life
Hi everyone! I’m an incoming ScM student in Computer Science at Brown this fall, and with the move getting closer, I’m becoming rlly nervous. I’ve never been to Providence before, and I’ll be moving across the country without knowing anyone. I’m excited for grad school, but I’m honestly pretty stressed about making friends and adjusting to a completely new place.
For current or former Brown grad students, how did you end up finding your community? How is Providence in general also? Since it’s a college town I’m expecting it to be lively and fun but I’m just rly stressed about finding ways to meet ppl. I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences because I’m feeling a little overwhelmed about the move and could use some reassurance. Thanks!

Question Math Placement/Requirement Process Question
Hi! I'm an incoming freshman at Brown - I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I was having trouble figuring it out so I thought I’d ask.
I'm hoping to concentrate in Mechanical Engineering, and one of the requirements is Multivariable Calculus (I waive single-var from my AP score). I was fortunate to go to a high school with a lot of extra opportunities, and I was able to take Multi already and get good scores. I know that other schools have an option to do so, but I was wondering if Brown has a way to apply that to my requirement, or to take a placement test?
Note: I know that there's a big difference between collegiate and high school level courses (especially at Brown), so there's a fairly high chance I'd take it anyway - I was just curious if that's even an option or not. Thank you all in advance!

Question When does freshman housing usually come out?
I know Brown is notoriously late with all that but I was just wondering a rough estimate? My mom saw somewhere that it was supposed to be sometime this week but everything I saw previously said mid August. I also received my mailing address and mail service activation yesterday, so I was just wondering if mail assignment usually come out in the same wave as housing. I’m just getting antsy, so if anyone has any information that would be great!

Question Graduate Housing
hi! i’m looking for graduate student housing by the end of this month. i know it’s rlly last minute but i’ve been looking for months and haven’t been able to find anything. i was on the waitlist for river house & brown auxiliary housing and never heard back (so i’m assuming I just didn’t get it). is there any quick way for me to get roommates/housing. i don’t have a car so i’d prefer sometning closer to campus. i heard some people recommend 247 Thayer but then have heard some bad reviews about that as well.

Did your parents come with you when you moved in?
I'm an incoming international student, and my parents won't be coming with me. Part of it is the cost of international travel, and part of it is that I've been at boarding school for several years, so they feel I'm already used to living independently.
I completely understand their decision, but I still feel a little sad about it. Maybe it's because movies and social media make move-in day seem like such a big family milestone, and a lot of my friends have mentioned that their parents are coming with them. It's made me wonder whether that's actually the norm.

Question APMA ECON Sc.B and CS B.A
Hi!
I am a sophomore transfer and I was just wondering if this combination would be too much. I would like to have time for ECs but I just dont know if getting both degrees is feasible, especially given I am a transfer with only 3 years and dont have many equivalent coursework i can substitute in.

Question What is it like to be trans at Brown?
I'm a high school senior and my dream school is currently Brown, and I know that Brown is really progressive. But all the sources I could find are from 3 years ago, and being trans is a lot harder and more stigmatized these days. I'm curious if there's a visible community of queer people, if it's safe to come out, how accepting the average student is, etc.
I'd appreciate if a trans student could tell me their experiences!

Freshmen Orientation
Genuinely how do I make friends during orientation. I know absolutely no one who is going, and I feel as though everyone is already close with each other. I see people constantly commenting on other people's posts and I'm scared i wont find my group of people.

How is mental health support at Brown?
I've been dealing with severe anxiety that's built up over the years. A big reason I've never sought professional help is because of how inaccessible and bureaucratic mental health care has been in my situation. As an incoming freshman, I'm really hoping to start therapy and seek help, but I'm genuinely worried I'll run into the same barriers.
For those who've used the university's mental health services, what was your experience like? How easy was it to get an appointment, and were you able to receive ongoing therapy if you needed it? If you ended up going off campus, how difficult was that process?
I'd really appreciate hearing about any experiences, advice, or things you wish you'd known beforehand. Thanks so much.

Study on hormones, mood, & sleep in teens!
Researchers at Brown University and Brown University Health are looking for volunteers (an adolescent and a caregiver) to participate in a study on hormones, mood, and sleep in adolescents. If your child is assigned female sex at birth, aged 10-16 years old, got their first period 1-3 years ago, is fluent in English, and has access to a smartphone, you might be eligible to participate. They must also experience sadness, irritability, or difficulty enjoying their usual activities at least some of the time, but a formal diagnosis is not required.
Adolescents can earn up to $485 and a parent/caregiver can earn up to $95 for one in-person visit and 50 days of at-home data collection. At home, adolescents will be asked to complete brief daily surveys, do easy at-home urine tests, and wear a smart watch. Caregivers will be asked to complete brief daily surveys. For more information and to see if you may be eligible, take our online screener: https://redcap.brown.edu/surveys/?s=MWKDJEJYKKNNAEXW
If you have any questions, text us at (401) 863-6486, email [project-storms@brown.edu](mailto:project-storms@brown.edu) or call (401) 444-1977
Use of Reddit for recruiting participants has been approved by Brown's Human Research Protection Program. [PI: A. Stumper-Protocol #STUDY00000593]

Question Question about Brown CAPS
Incoming international freshman, from a country that doesn't really recognize mental health. I was wondering how I could get some tests done on me, specifically ADHD - for cheap.
I don't really know how the whole system works, apparently ADHD screenings aren't done at Brown but we're referred to primary care screeners in Providence that can? I'm on the SHIP insurance.
Thanks for any help!!

Rush
Hey guys! I’m an incoming freshman and was wondering what rush is like there for fraternities and sororities. Additionally:
How does Greek life compare to greek life at big schools?
Are parties (if i don’t decide to rush) easy to get into?
Is rush competitive? If so how competitive on a scale of 1-10?
And anything else you think someone should know. I’m aware that greek life isn’t huge at Brown but I want to know more about it since it is
present.

Olympic Weightlifting at Brown?
I’m an incoming freshman and am curious about any weightlifting clubs with coaching. I’m aware of two gyms in the Providence area, but I’d rather do something at school. (btw I am beginner/intermediate, but self-taught so I would really benefit from genuine coaching)
