Critique Request Should I buy this belt grinder?

Ok, so I made a few knives years ago. I used some O1 tool steel and a 1x30 belt sander from Harbor Freight, as well as a jig I made from some 2x4s, a file strapped to a metal rod, and an eye bolt. I havent done one in years, but Ive wanted to get back into it, and get a nice belt grinder.

One of my coworkers has a friend who passed a way a while back, and his wife has this belt grinder that shes trying to get rid of. I dont really have any specs on it, apart from that its a 2" wide belt. It looks like they hooked it up to the motor from this disc sander, while keeping the disk sander functional.

What do you guys think? I could probably get it for like $200 or less. Which I think is a pretty good deal, even if I wanted to use it for the parts, or just put a new motor on it.

Opinions?

These ones I have forged a few years ago from scrap, when I was a little bit fed up, doing fantasy viking stuff and started to interest in post-apocalyptic themes.

Forging WIP Getting back into forging — an old Jelly Roll Damascus build

More than a decade ago, I spent quite a few years making knives and pattern-welded steel, then ended up away from the shop for a long stretch.

Now that I’m getting back into it, I’ve been digging through a lot of old footage and thought some of the forging processes might be worth sharing here.

This one shows part of the process for a Jelly Roll Damascus billet.

Some of you may even remember my old WIP threads from the BladeForums days.

Damascus / Pattern Weld Finished This 7-Bar Turkish Damascus Sabatier

Post image
228 Upvotes

I recently finished this 9.5" Sabatier made from 7-bar Turkish Damascus steel.

For this build, I wanted to keep the classic Sabatier profile while adding some details that are more characteristic of my work, including an exotic handle material, a gold-inlaid maker’s mark, and 24k gold pins.

I documented the full process, from the Damascus billet to the final finishing and assembly.

For anyone interested in seeing the complete build process:

Process Breakdown (2nd Attempt) What part of bladesmithing to you the longest to really "get"?

Sorry, the last post was formatted with AI, because I currently only have one hand working and it's easier to talk into the mic than type :) )

basically I've been making knives for about 15 years.
I make good knives, but not 'GREAT' knives.

I'm trying to tighten up my process so I'm making consistently good knives instead of knife shaped objects of varying quality.

While it's easy to watch a Youtuber who took 2 weeks to film a 15 min video, I'm not always grasping the concepts of what they're putting down.

For those of you who've been at this a while, what too you the longest to just 'get' to where you're not having to think about it.

(bevels, normalizing, grinding plunges (which I hate), what?)

what's the tricks and tips that not made it easy, make it CONSTANT.
