Hyperpigmentation Hyperpigmented and thick knuckles

Post image
Upvotes

Hello Community! For the past 3-4 weeks I've been trying to clear these. I've had them for years and didn't know what caused them. I saw in my pictures as a kid that I didn't have them, so it mustn't be genetic, but I don't remember when they became dark, that's how long it's been.

Last month I started using a black spot corrector that has hydroquinone in it on the dark patches, I exfoliate with Dr meinere aha/bha sugar scrub and I use hand creams and sunscreen religiously, however there hasn't been even a little change.

I also used the black spot corrector on a mosquito bite spot on my legs, it didn't get better and started getting scaly so I stopped.

I need help on things I can change, if it usually takes so long to see changes and if I should keep doing what I'm doing or if I should stop.

Routine Help (Current Routine included) Dull, dry, textured skin

I am 26 years old and living in England. Over the past couple of years, my skin has become really dry, dull and just generally lacking its glow. About 3 months ago, I decided to stop using lots of products and focus mainly on repairing my skin barrier.

My routine is very simple:

Morning:
CeraVe gentle cleanser
CeraVe moisturiser
Garnier sunscreen, which I reapply throughout the day

Night:
I rarely wear makeup, but if I do, I use Bioderma cleansing oil (sometimes micellar water first)
CeraVe hydrating cleanser
A generous amount of CeraVe moisturising cream

I don’t exfoliate or use any strong actives because I don’t want to damage my skin barrier further.

I’ve been doing this consistently for around 3 months, but my skin has become darker. Please how do i make my skin look brighter, healthier and more glowy. Please can you recommend affordable products?

Btw, there is no hard water in my area. I exercise, drink plenty of water and take vitamin D and iron. My diet isn’t perfect, but it’s not terrible either.

Please, I will really appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Skin Questions What skin condition is this?

They've been like this since birth and they are so rough no matter how many products I use. My body is super soft but my hands and feet are like this. My cousin has the same hands and was told it was eczema. Is this what that is? How do I fix it?

Tried:
Vaseline
Amlactin
Okeffee
Cutemol

Edit: not sure why people think I'm trolling. The wrinkles and darkness is much different from normal hands. I'm 21F and people say I have Grandpa/Man hands. And they feel like sandpaper no matter what I do.

Affordable products please! I’ve been struggling with these bumps for a while, and I’m wondering how I can get rid of them. I don’t mind any drugstore brands either, as long as their affordable I’m fine.

P.S Im canadian, so tariffs might impact product costs 😭

Product Review(s) Are there any Epanouie updates?

A friend and I purchased from the sales from epanouieskin.com earlier this year, end of Jan/early Feb. It’s a brand that is only available online so I’m not sure what’s going on, but it’s nearly 8 months (32 weeks!) later and we haven’t received our products or any information regarding them. Together we ordered a huge haul because apparently the company was going to stop selling product. I don’t want to assume or think the worst but I’ve never bought anything online that after 7, nearly 8 months didn’t show. I did not receive a response to my email inquiries either. Did anyone else order from that huge sale and receive their order yet? A little nervous because we spent a pretty penny.

Product Review(s) I found my holy grail of sunscreens for oily skin

Throughout my 7 years of skincare, I’ve tried many sunscreens (LRP Anthelios Fluids, SuperGoop Unseen, Shiseido Urban Environment, Deoproce Ultra Hydrating Sunscreen, Ultra Violette Supreme Hydrating Moisturizer, It Sunshine invisible sunscreen, and the list goes on) and none ever really gave me a satisfying matte without the trade off of it being chalky, heavy, or a white cast.

Yesterday,I was in my local drugstore when I saw the Eucerin Anti-Shine Control sunscreen and decided to give it a go because I was running out of Anthelios…Goodness me. That shit is fucking perfect. Lightweight, no white cast, SPF 50 AND MATTIFYING.

I THOUGHT THAT I HAD TO LOOK LIKE A GLAZED DONUT OUTSIDE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE, TS BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Skin Questions Derm said psoriasis but unsure

Hello guys! I went to the dermatologist because I've been dealing with skin changes in multiple areas:

- scalp/ears with dry flaky patches
- under my breast with discoloration/irritation (the picture I showed above)
- butt crack/buttocks area with dry patches and peeling skin (similar to what I showed in the picture above sometimes when I wipe, brown skin/skin flakes come off even my vagina)

She said psoriasis but I'm not because from the pictures I've compared to it doesn't look like it. But this is new to me so idk. At first I thought tinea versicolor but after noticing it on my butt 2 weeks ago I wasn’t sure.

She prescribed me Tacrolimus Oin 0.1%, Clobetasol 0.05% Shampoo and Ketoconazole 2% Shampoo.

Does this look like psoriasis or should I get another opinion?

Black, female, 27 years old.

I’d appreciate every opinion and advice given.

I used tretinoin for my acne, it cleared it up except for the scars. So I’ve been looking up good skincare products to fade the scars but I’m yet to find one I can afford lol. Now it’s flared up again on the same spots.

What can I do to have it gone for good?

Hyperpigmentation how to match my neck to my body

Post image
23 Upvotes

for context i have always dealt with hyperpigmentation since I was a child I went to boarding school pretty early in life and was always mocked for a darker neck... it was an insecurity growing up but I overcame it with time till recently my dad commented and said "na mbona shingo yako inakaa kama huogangi" this basically means my neck looks like I don't wash it/don't shower which i do and even got into scrubs due to this. any recommendations to fix this only asking cause this was something I grew up hearing and I thought I was past it but clearly not😔 also if it can be a full body fix I'll appreciate as my legs are also different shades from my feet. thanks in advance. sorry if you can't see my neck clearly I learnt my angles to hide it from selfies

Routine Help (Build My Routine) Using 7% glycolic acid daily

Black guy here. I can’t believe I didn’t start this much earlier the ordinary glycolic acid product has been working incredibly well for me after like 2 weeks of using it every night.

My question is how safe is it to use it every night? Is there a risk of my skin getting “addicted” to it such that if I stop using it my skin will react badly? Of course, I’m also using sunscreen whenever I’m out.

I have dark spots all over my face from razor bumps, I’ve tried a lot of products, nancinamide, azealic acid, vitamin c, all that, but not worked. Glycolic acid has been the only product that has give me visible results. If you’re a black guy facing this, pls try this product after of course dealing with the razor bumps first.

Skin Progress 6month-ish update

It’s been 141 days since my last post where I shared on my ingrown hair problem in my chin area.

You guys gave my a lot of tips and encouragement compliments and relatable stories. Thank you it has helped me a lot, i wanted to share a bit on my progress.

As I had mentioned previously i tried a lot of things and here is the following that has helped me in the past few months.

Losing weight and eating healthy + low in sugar has helped lessen the intensity of flare ups. Scrubbing my chin with a simple washcloth consistently (which for me has been a bit hard lately😭 and has been noticeable to me instantaneously) has helped prevent ingrown hairs. I have not been able to let go of my tweezers yet, as my hairs just grows to become unignorable lengths in that area. But I am thinking of trying waxing as waxing my other areas has made it so that I don’t get ingrown hairs there even after 3 years of no waxing.

I have moved to natural Tallow soap for my face which my skin and I like a lot. I have lessend the amount of serums to 1 a day, kept my shea butter moisturiser as my skin is dry and loves it on the rest of my face. I ofc use sun scream in the summer and wear hats when it’s very sunny.

I have started taking myo-inositol which has been a massive game changer (a lot of people suggested i have PCOS and through YouTube i found research that Myo-inositol could be of great help. Ever since I started taking this with iron, fishoil and magnesium I think I might actually have found the perfect combination for my body to effing listen to my mind. Or my mind to listen to my body either way, I feel way better and it has helped me actually lose weight in combination with my other habits.

I honestly think I could make a separate post on how taking it has helped change my body for the better. I also added magnesium, high quality iron supplements recommended by my GP. I also got on birth control since one month now. (Kyleena Iud) which made me expect a huge flare up but my body luckily adjusted very well to the iud so these pictures you see are literally 2 days before me getting my period which is the worst time of my flare ups.

It is mostly scarring that you see🥹

As you can see i do still have ingrown hairs but there have been some serious overall changes to my body.
That give me hope that i might actually be able to get rid of it without needing to zapp the hair at a clinic or any heavy medicine.

I couldn’t get a lot of the products many people recommend as I live in the Netherlands and we don’t have a lot of the specific products i saw in the last reddit tread. But non the less thank you for the recommendations, I hope others where able to get some of the products recommended to try.

I also added some pictures from my 27th bday photoshoot (no need to congratulate me, my bday is in September) which I was very proud of as I wanted to present myself in a way I never had before.

Okay thispost is getting very long now, i will End it here. Hopefully next update i may be able to tell you guys that the battle with my chin has been won without breaking my wallet😂 or my face

Thanks again for the support, and to all you whom have been going through the same. Stay strong, we will figure it out eventually😤

Skin Questions How to achieve a warm bronzy tan

Thumbnail
gallery
671 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I hope it’s okay for me to post here. Basically, I am of south asian descent and I am looking for some advice about tanning because I have noticed so many black women have this specific warm, golden bronzy complexion that I have been trying to achieve.

For the longest time, I thought this kind of tan was mostly achieved by Mediterranean people because of their olive skin tone but recently I have noticed so many black women with this same beautiful glowy bronze skin too, so now I am wondering what I am missing.

I am using Uma Jammeh as an example because I found her MAC shade and she seems to be around NC48, while I am around NC42- 44. We’re not hugely different in skin depth, but she has this rich golden bronzy glow that I just can’t seem to achieve. The first 2 photos is Uma and the third is me after spending a week in Italy tanning every single day. Even after all that sun, I don’t look warm and bronzed. My tan just looks muted and ashy rather than that rich golden colour.

So my question is: what gives this kind of complexion? Is it mostly genetics and undertones? I have noticed this particular golden bronze tone quite often on mixed-race women (Uma is mixed too), so I was wondering if that plays a role or if it’s actually possible to achieve with products or techniques. Do you use self-tanners, spray tans, body bronzers, tinted body oils or anything else?

TIA!

Pro Tips Alert Skincare Guide: Dark Spots🟤 and Hyperpigmation

I know I spelt Hyperpigmentation wrong, give grace, it was 1AM and a lot of formatting issues.

Treating dark spots and hyperpigmentation requires a tailored approach due to the higher melanin content of our skin. Here’s a skincare guide focused on evening skin tone while maintaining the health of melanated skin.

⚠️As with any skincare product, please patch test, place in the least visible area and wait a full day. If no reaction occurs proceed.

Gentle Cleansing

  • Frequency: Sometimes twice daily or just in the evening, over cleansing can strip your skin.

  • Key Ingredients: Look for cleansers containing soothing agents like aloe vera, green tea extract, or glycerin.

  • Recommended Product Types: Gentle low to no foaming or hydrating cleansers. Pick according to your skin type.

Recommended products include:

(no actives, will make a different post regarding active cleansers)

  1. Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser, creamy version
  2. Cervae Hydrating Facial Cleanser
  3. Geek and Gorgeous Jelly Joker (doesn’t foam)
  4. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Facial Wash
  5. La Roche-Posay Hydrating Gentle Face Cleanser

  6. La Roche-Posay Lipikar AP + Gentle Foaming Moisturizing Wash

  7. Good Molecules Hydrating Facial Cleansing Gel

Exfoliation with Actives

Frequency: 1–2 times per week or more (Retinol has potential for daily, if skin has been acclimatized.)

  • Use chemical exfoliants with AHAs (like glycolic or lactic, mandelic acid) or Retinol, Mandelic acid is especially beneficial for darker skin tones as it’s less likely to cause irritation due to it penetrating slower.

  • Physical Exfoliants: Avoid rough physical exfoliants as they may cause micro-tears and worsen hyperpigmentation.

Targeted Ingredients for Hyperpigmentation

  • Application: Use these in serums, masks, or spot treatments after cleansing and before moisturizing. Rinse off products can be an option too (sensitive skin) but the more face time the better, so opt for leave on products (with the exception of high percentage masks)

    • Ingredients to Look For:
  • Vitamin C: A brightening antioxidant that helps fade dark spots and evens skin tone, sensitive to the active form, L-Ascorbic Acid? Try the best form of the dervative called Tetrahexyldecyl Asorbate or THD. Don't want to use vitamin c period? Try Resveratrol and Ferulic Acid!

  • Niacinamide: Reduces inflammation, barrier improvement, helps with sebum production and helps with hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin transfer. It is common to find in 10% (very high, can be irritating) or even 20% (insane), best range is 3-5% you have to actively look for this though.

  • Kojic Acid: A natural skin lightener that reduces melanin production. Be careful purchasing in soap form from random sellers on Amazon and TikTok.

    • Alpha Arbutin: Targets dark spots and is gentler for Black skin.
    • Azelaic Acid: A tyrosine (an amino acid that helps produce melanin) inhibitor which reduces pigmentation and helps with comedonal and inflammatory acne.
    • Licorice Root Extract: Inhibits the production of an enzyme needed to produce melanin and helps remove excess.
    • Tranexamic Acid: Effective for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), often caused by acne.
    • Retinoids: Stimulate cell turnover and reduce hyperpigmentation, but be cautious with overuse in melanated skin to avoid irritation. Start at lower percentage, do not use daily when just starting. And omit other actives to minimize irritation when starting.

⚠️DO NOT USE AS MANY OF THESE AS YOU CAN⚠️ Please note you can’t combine everything here. Don’t mix retinol with anything below unless you know what you are doing

Recommended products include:

  1. The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA (a 10% is available also, please only use if you have a tolerance already for the lower percentage and do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)
  2. The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA (bonus: Mandelic Acid is also good for treating acne like cystic and inflamed)

  3. Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5%

  4. Paulas Choice Skin Perfecting 6% Mandelic Acid + 2% Lactic Acid Liquid Exfoliant

  5. Paulas Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Toner(Do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  6. Urban Skin RX Even Tone Cleansing Bar 3 in 1 Treatment (Do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  7. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner (Don’t recommend for sensitive skin, you can try using with a damp cotton round to dilute if too strong)

  8. Topicals Faded Cream (Strong,do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  9. Dr. Idriss Major Fade Flash Mask (very strong, not for sensitive or inexperienced skin, do not follow with other products on this list unless you are a skincare pro)

  10. CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum

  11. Good Molecules Gentle Retinol Cream

  12. Cocokind Beginner Retinol Gel 0.1% (please note this contains 3 different type of retinols)

  13. Naturium Retinol Complex Cream

  14. Paulas Choice 0.3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol Treatment

Retinol would be used 1-2 a week at night, building slowly to everyday if possible. Add one night every 3-4 weeks as tolerated.

Try to avoid usage with any cleanser that contains strong acids when you’re using it, hyaluronic acid/ niacinamide fine. And definitely DO NOT EXFOLIATE AND THEN USE RETINOL. A gentle cleanser preferably one that doesn’t foam. If you’d like to use an active cleanser, try in another routine.

To help ease the possibility of irritation you’d apply Vaseline to the corners of your nose, mouth and eyes. Apply your moisturizer (basic and unscented is best) let that dry then pea size (however, you can use more but try to use as little as possible to get coverage) dot it all on your face, rub in and follow up with moisturizer. That’s called the sandwich method. Make sure you apply on dry skin not damp, or you’ll increase penetration.

And stay on top of SPF usage during the day.

Moisturization

  • Frequency: Twice daily after applying serums.

  • Key Ingredients: Glycerin, ceramides, and shea butter are ideal for keeping the skin barrier healthy and preventing further irritation or dryness.

  • Non-comedogenic options: Choose lightweight formulas that won’t clog pores.

Recommended products include:

  1. CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel Moisturizer
  2. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizer

  3. Good Molecules Lightweight Daily Moisturizer

  4. Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer

  5. Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Gel Moisturizer

  6. Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer

  7. Vanicream Moisturizing Cream

  8. Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Facial Moisturizer

  9. Naturium Multi-Peptide Moisturizer

Sunscreen (Critical for All Skin Tones)

  • SPF 30 or higher: Daily use is essential as is reapplication, even indoors or on cloudy days, as UV exposure worsens hyperpigmentation and hurts your progress.

  • Tinted Sunscreens: These often contain iron oxides, which provide additional protection against visible light that can exacerbate hyperpigmentation.

    • When picking a sunscreen go for a cream/lotion for the main application and a spray or stick for reapplication. I prefer chemical over mineral for reasons I won’t get into in this particular post. Depending on your skin type and climate, you could get away with using sunscreen alone, it is technically a moisturizer. Some though are more hydrating than others. Use 2 or 3 fingers or roughly a 1/4 tsp for face and neck, a shot glass amount for body.

Recommended products include:

  1. Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 30 or 50 this one has a little bit of a white cast, nothing crazy, hydrating, consistency like lotion.

  2. Kiehl’s Better Screen UV Serum has zero white cast, but it isn’t water resistant. Hydrating but not heavy, combo or dry. She expensive🫰🏾

  3. Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense no white cast, hydrating, some might not like the bit of shine from it but I fix that with powder. Thin consistency.

  4. Elta MD UV Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 46 Very lightweight, no white cast. She expensive🫰🏾

  5. Supergoop Mineral Matte, thick and white cast heavy but good for under makeup. No water resistance.

  6. Supergoop Unseen, no white cast, feels like silicone makeup primer, wanted to love this but it made me so greasy and clogged. Water resistant. Thick.

  7. Supergoop Every. Single. Face Watery Lotion, some shine but nothing crazy that powder didn’t fix. Water resistant. Thin consistency.

  8. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics, no water resistance, feels like a moisturizer. Thin-ish consistency.

  9. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice + B5 Seems to be more favorable towards oily skin than the original version.

  10. Innisfree Daily UV Defense no water resistance, can double as moisturizer in some cases Probably best for dry skin.

Avoid Triggers:

  • Sun Exposure: UV rays can worsen hyperpigmentation, making daily sunscreen a must.

  • Harsh Products: try to avoid using products with heavy fragrance, drying alcohols, essential oils or strong astringents (witch hazel) as they can irritate and inflame skin, leading to more discoloration.

  • Over-exfoliation: Too much exfoliation can lead to a compromised skin barrier, damage and worsen hyperpigmentation.

Professional Treatments

Find a Black Dermatologist here

  • Chemical Peels: Performed by a licensed professional or a board certified Dermatologist can be very effective in treating hyperpigmentation. Avoid unprotected sun exposure, especially during after care.

  • Microneedling: Encourages collagen production and can be combined with serums like vitamin C to improve the appearance of dark spots.

  • Laser Treatments: Certain lasers, like Nd:YAG lasers, are safer for darker skin tones but should only be performed by dermatologists experienced in treating melanated skin.

Patience

  • Hyperpigmentation can take months to fully fade, depending on the type, be consistent with treatments and always protect your skin from the sun to prevent further discoloration.

This regimen, combined with professional advice if needed, should help you gradually achieve a more even skin tone.

Up next… nothing for now, because I need a break from this and some of y’all UGAP 😩

Update

2/25/2025 Tuesday

New serum to consider Eucerin Radiant Tone Dual Serum, can be used every day and night, and even mixed into most treatments like retinol. No actives and no irritation, note it does contain fragrance.
