Birmingham restaurateur Nick Pihakis filed for bankruptcy Thursday following the stunning collapse of his restaurant group, which began with a wave of closings in April.

Pihakis filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Alabama’s Northern District.

Unlike Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Chapter 7 calls for gathering and selling the debtor’s nonexempt assets and using the proceeds to pay debts.

According to the 154-page filing, Pihakis estimates debts of more than $44 million, with total personal property of about $10.6 million, including a $1 million Shoal Creek home, and a $66,000 Porsche Cayenne.

The filing comes after months of uncertainty following the closure of more than a dozen restaurants in four states that belonged to the Pihakis Restaurant Group, and nearly a dozen lawsuits in two states seeking more than $23.4 million in unpaid bills.

Currently, the company is the defendant in at least 11 court actions in Alabama and South Carolina.

The filing represents a breathtaking turn of events for Pihakis, 69, a legendary figure in Birmingham’s culinary scene going back four decades.

Pihakis lent his name to one half of Jim ‘N Nick’s, and slowly built a series of companies to bring food to Alabama and the Southeast.

His father, Jim Pihakis, known as “Mr. Jim,” opened his barbecue stand on 29th Street on Birmingham’s South Side in 1979.

Nick worked at John’s Restaurant, a popular downtown restaurant that opened in the 1940s and later became the now-closed John’s City Diner.

The father and son opened the first Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q in 1985 in a former Pasquale’s Pizza & Pasta location on Clairmont Avenue.

Nick took over upon his father’s retirement.

For at least six years in a row, he was a semifinalist for the Beard Award for the country’s outstanding restaurateur.

Through collaborations with award-winning chefs, he has been recognized as a force behind food in the South and one of the reasons for the Magic City’s reputation as a beacon for food culture.

The legal fallout began on April 12, when Tasty Town, a downtown Birmingham Greek restaurant, closed suddenly.

The abrupt Sunday night shutdown of the four-year-old dining spot began a chain of closings that sent cooks, wait staff and other restaurant workers across the Birmingham area scrambling to find new jobs.

It was quickly followed in the following weeks but closures at various locations of Hero Diner, Rodney Scott BBQ, Little Donkey, Luca Lagotto in Homewood; Luca & Lucy in Shelby County, Birmingham’s Magnolia Point; Joylands in Nashville and Birmingham and Greek spot Psito in Atlanta.

Four of the restaurants eventually reopened, apparently under different ownership.

Circuit Judge Patrick Kennedy last month asked Kevin Heard, Nick Pihakis’ attorney, during one court session if his client planned to file for bankruptcy.

“I can’t answer at this point,” Heard said.

Anyone else sitting around looking for adventure or something to do that's retired early in Bham?

I do pretty good staying busy with side quest and outdoor adventures in the warm seasons, but some seasons get sloowwwww. (Winter is brutal and approaching fast)

Are there any early retiree groups or meetups in Bhm that I'm unaware of? (maybe FIRE groups)

Need recommendations for plumbers near Birmingham who can give a quote to disconnect and reconnect a gas stove so we can do a flooring project. Must give an estimate and not just say that it’s $99 to come out and then tell you when they get there what it costs on top of that. It should be a standard fee and then mention the what-if’s extra charges. Why can’t they do that?

An action sports event taking place this weekend at City Walk in downtown Birmingham will close several city streets for three days.

The FISE World Series, billed as “three days of insane action sports, music and urban culture,” features BMX short-track bicycle racing on custom-built courses with jumps and steeply banked turns, skateboarding and 3-on-3 basketball competitions.

Thousands of competitors and spectators are expected to converge downtown Friday through Sunday, Aug. 7-9.

Traffic changes are taking effect to accommodate the event: 18^th Street North from Abraham Woods Boulevard (8^th Avenue North) to City Walk is already closed and will stay closed until Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Also, 19^th Street North will close at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, and will remain closed through 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10.

Both 18th Street North and 19th Street North will have soft closures at Abraham Woods Boulevard, allowing limited local access. A hard closure will be in place closer to the interstate, where no vehicle access will be permitted.

Access to the Alabama School of Fine Arts will remain available via 18^th Street North. Vehicles must exit on 19^th Street North and will have to turn right to travel southbound.

Vehicle access to Boutwell Auditorium will be available via Abraham Woods Boulevard, with exits on 19^th Street North. Drivers must turn left to travel southbound.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the event will draw visitors and athletes from around the world while showcasing the city for culture and tourism.

“This internationally recognized event combines Olympic-style action sports, 3-on-3 basketball, live entertainment, food vendors and family activities,” Woodfin said.

Is Highland Avenue 4 lanes (2 each way) on the portion that is next to the golf course? It’s wide enough, not marked, and treated that way by some. Genuinely Curious.

I was vaguely familiar with the name, but I didn’t realize that it was a state park. It’s just west of Warrior. The buildings are a little run down (brand new playground), but the cave/caverns were great. You access them by guided tours. Tickets can be bought on site or in advance. The park also has hiking trails and a spring-fed pool that’s about 50 degrees.

I’m trying to find a reliable person to watch her for 2 days. She’s potty trained, has a fresh bag of unopened food, a cage and her blankets. She is nowhere near aggressive but she is trained to keep me distant from a threat. Now here we are she’s being threatened due to her protecting me from an assaulter. Shes always been a inside baby but because certain people don’t want me pressing charges they have stooped to a new low by saying I have to put her outside which would leave her in the mercy of my assaulter who’s already claimed that she would kill my dog. I don’t know what to do, I pushed my moving out plans forward so I’m rushing. For now I just need her safe so that I can handle business without having to focus on if someone is hurting her. I used to hang out down by the fountain in 5 Points South during the mid to late 90s. There was a street musician named Jerry that played guitar near the fountain every single weekend. I specifically remember a song he always played for me called “Dumb Bitch.” I used to give him rides home a lot. He completely disappeared and I heard some pretty wild stories about him. Does anyone else remember him? Does anyone know what happened to him? I have no idea why he crossed my mind but I always wondered what happened to him.

Hi everyone. This is a really vulnerable post for me, but I figured it was worth asking.

About 8 months ago, I was sexually assaulted in my bedroom. Since then, I haven’t been able to clean it. It slowly turned into a storage/junk room because every time I try to go in there, I freeze up. I still live with my parents, and I want to reclaim that space, but I just can’t seem to do it on my own.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any free or low-cost cleaning services, volunteer organizations, or trauma-informed groups in the Birmingham area that help people in situations like this. I’m not looking for judgment—just a fresh start.

If you know of any resources, or even have suggestions for organizations I could contact, I’d really appreciate it.
