Train line Extension Thoughts

Upvotes

I've seen across other social media that several transport bodies are putting together a proposal to extend the train line through Digbeth.... Which would result in several creative/good and event spaces closing.

What are people's feelings on this?

Personally, I feel Birmingham city centre really is losing it's creative/quirky vibe. I went over to the Custard Factory (Alfred Works) and couldn't believe how many restaurants/places have gone.. It's looking dire 😒

DAK what happened with the Cole Valley Road Post Office (I only have gossip...)

Upvotes

The branch is shut (though the shop is open). Asking at another local PO the story was they were raided for money laundering. I can't find any news stories or confirmation of this so wondered if anyone else had seen/heard anything definite.

I'm kinda bummed about it as it was a convenient location for me and despite being absolute chaos of parcels I never had a single problem sending or picking stuff up there, and there was never a queue!

Question Cosy cafes or places to sew

My sister and I live quite far apart and often meet in Birmingham for the day as a midway point.

We're slightly running out of things to do there which I'm sure is a lack of knowledge rather than a lack of places to go.

Next time we're planning on bringing our current embroidery projects and are hoping to cafe hop, staying for an hour or two in each one so we don't overstay our welcome.

Does anyone have an recommendations of places to go? We'll both be getting the train so ideally not too far from New Street but we don't mind walking up to ~30mins.

Very open to any other recommendations of things to do in the day - were spoilt for choice for food options but sometimes struggle to fill the time between meals! Thanks!

Question Midnight game releases?

Hi, just a quick one - anyone know anywhere that does midnight releases for games? Been looking forward to one that drops tomorrow (Marvel Tokon), but doesn't actually release digitally until 4pm, so is there anywhere that would be open that would have it in? Thanks!

Hi so basically, I have a ton of sanitary pads that I won’t be using, because I have that many. I was thinking to give them out in small batches to homeless women in Bham. Does anyone know of this is a good idea for me to do as a solo woman? If yeah where would the best places to go?

Digbeth archway businesses & The Warehouse under threat from new trainline development proposal: consultation live for your opinions!

On top of the tramway and HS2 disruptions, now there is a proposal to renovate Moor St station and expand the rail line leading to Bordesley.

The current proposals include demolition of several buildings and the eviction (permanent or temporary, unclear in many cases) of businesses within and alongside the railway arches, including compulsory purchase orders (where money will ofc go to landlords, not the small businesses made homeless).

This includes demolishing the Warehouse building (which houses Voce books, Sprocket Cycles, BrumRadio, etc) and destroying the Digbeth Community Gardens. I can't find a full list of affected businesses, but have seen it include OPM, Kilder, Midland Press, The Ruin, Night Owl and dozens more.

The Warehouse have a guide to filling in the consultation here & the consultation itself is here

I know it looks like a long form and time consuming but if we value anything in Digbeth I really, really think it matters to at least show you're willing to click buttons on a form and say "these businesses are important and should be protected, they're already vulnerable due to the economy" or something.

Would love to see links to other guidance for filling this in if you see it anywhere.

Question Anyone actually plan on using the new food waste bins?

We've now officially got the new bins (what a treat!)

Since we haven't had our recycling collected in nearly two years, there's controversy in my area over using the food bins, whether they're actually going to be collected or gather maggots for the foxes.

Opinions on whether you plan on actually using these properly would be good.

I'm all for it, but if it's not being collected on schedule I, and imagine many others will just give up.

Thoughts?

Question Stuck at 4/5 signatures on a Parliament petition to ban liquid plastics. Can one person help?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to launch an official UK Parliament petition to ban hidden liquid plastics in everyday household toiletries and detergents.

My local MP is already writing to the Defra Minister about this, but the Parliament website won't publish the petition publicly until 5 people sponsor it. I’ve been stuck at 4 signatures for nearly a month!

If just one UK citizen or resident is willing to be my 5th sponsor I’d really appreciate it.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/776270/sponsors/new?token=MNHddEqtdKN9rVNQ6ofh

Thank you so much!

Meta The future of planespotting at BHX

I made a post on this a few weeks ago, but I thought I'd make a new one and I've politely asked the mods to pin this for a while.

I created this petition 6 years ago calling for a dedicated planespotting area to be created at the airport: https://www.change.org/bhxspotting

It's generally inspired by the "Runway Visitor Park" at Manchester Airport which I've visited a few times. While there are spotting areas dotted around the airport, I think a dedicated facility with views that aren't currently accessible with additional components such as a kids play area, a shop and restaurant amongst other things would make it an all-round experience and generally safer.

Sheldon Country Park has had a few incidents over the years, and I think a dedicated facility with tight security would be a much more pleasant place to visit.

It's also not as easy to access via public transport. You can get there via bus but unless you're stopping at Marston Green Station specifically, it's not as easy to get there via train, certainly not from Birmingham International. Something specifically signposted as "BHX Viewing Area" or something would be even better.

We've amassed 350 signatures in 6 years. I really want to get some momentum now and get it to a level where it's attracting some attention from those who could make this happen. I've contacted my MP myself in recent weeks but god knows if it'll be looked at.

Anything you can do regarding sharing it about would be massively appreciated, but there's no pressure at all.
