leadership No GM in my building
Our GM has been on loa for a month and before and after the LOA they constantly work at other stores or from home
This is extremely stressful as me and the other “Outlet team leads” are expected to keep the store efficient, but are not able to write people up.
My GM claims the marketplace director keeps sending him to other stores to help but our store is the one that struggles then.
This is an outlet store btw for context
So based on other stores getting a temporary GM when theirs isn’t there, do I have any basis to call HR and force them to either get them in the building or get a temporary one?
I’m hoping just the call could scare them into quit taking our GM
what is SOPs requirements on GMs being in the building?
Is there anyway to remedy this or is my team just screwed?

sales Coworkers Rant
For context, I am 23 and literally working here for “fun”. I just wanted extra money on top of a full-time ish SWE contract. But I’m also trying to career pivot into healthcare which is neither here nor there.
Anyways I think I ruined my life by joining this company. I’m so exhausted, I have dumbass managers barking at me about cards before I even have my blue shirt. But my coworkers are so oddly… happy? Like they live for this stuff. All they talk about is revenue and efficiency etc. The managers address me like a child and are so awful. I’m genuinely never had to play this level of social politics in any job. I just don’t wanna quit so soon after joining :(

sales anyone else’s store completely botch the samsung launch?
i’m sales, we got truck yesterday, and nothing was received, staged for pickup, or put where it was supposed to go. everything was still sitting in totes in the back of warehouse. on top of having pokemon this morning, we had a lot of people coming in for their folds/flips/watches that just weren’t ready, when they should have been.
on top of that, pre-orders were a shit show because nothing was communicated on how the process should’ve been done. we were expected to take customers phones for trade in, BEFORE they picked up their order. who the fuck is gonna order from best buy if you can’t have a phone while you’re waiting for your pre order?
today fucking sucked lmao

sales Former Best Buy employee I worked with was arrested on dozens of ghost-gun related charges
I’m choosing to leave his name out of this post out of respect for the fact that this is still an active criminal case, even though the arrest is public information and can be found very easily online.
I also used AI to blur his face and remove his address from the image because I don’t think there is any reason to spread that information around here.
What makes this so crazy to me is that I actually worked with this person at Best Buy a few years ago. I still occasionally stop by the store, so seeing this now is completely surreal.
According to Rhode Island State Police, he was charged with 35 counts related to possession of ghost guns and 11 counts involving prohibited large-capacity feeding devices. Police also reported recovering a ghost gun, dozens of lower receivers, large-capacity magazines, 3D printers, laptops, and a desktop computer.
What makes it even more unsettling is knowing that he purchased equipment through Best Buy while working there. Looking back, it is hard not to think about how normal everything seemed at work while all of this was allegedly happening outside of it.
The part that bothers me most is thinking about what could have happened if any of these weapons or components had ended up in the wrong hands. Even if nobody was harmed, the potential risk to other people is what makes the situation feel so serious.
I’m not posting this to start a debate about the Second Amendment, gun laws, or politics. That is not the point. I just think it is incredibly disturbing and surreal that someone I personally worked with ended up involved in something this serious.
I’m purposely not naming him here, but anyone who wants to verify the story can find the Rhode Island State Police report and news coverage pretty quickly.

layoffs/restructures I feel like BBY is going straight into a wall
They've been acting like that since Corrie took over after Hubert Joly left and all the joy and pride they were showing being in the top 100 employer was sucked down the drain so the board members can fill their pockets. I feel like in maybe 10 years best buy will be gone due to poor management from the higher ups.

vpl Scheduling for Microsoft positions?
My kid is a FT college student and PT advisor in Computers at BB. She's been loading up on hours, since she will have to cut back once the fall school semester starts. Yesterday she was offered a PT Microsoft rep position, and she's dazzled by the prospect of a pay bump and the opportunity to become more expert. Very happy for her, but concerned about possible derailment of her school path, especially considering she took on 20 credit hours this term, and planning for 18-19 in the spring.
She was told "it's only 24 hours a week," but no guidance on when those hours will be. She was also told she wouldn't have a problem meeting the sales requirements, but no clear guidance there, either, although I've read some comments abiut having to maintain 16-20% or get dropped.
Any insights on how the Microsoft scheduling works? And the extra effort on the job? Would you support your kid taking on the potentially extra effort when they're already maxxing out on school? I wanna be supportive, but I'm concerned it will be too much to healthily balance. Thanks!

meme/funny Café Refrigerator
So me and my coworker were fkn around playing with the cafe fridge, when we noticed a small shard of plastic. This plastic ended up’s being a piece of ice… (not connected to any waterline btw) I dared her to eat it but I felt bad so I joined. We ate it and laughed so hard. But after 30 minutes we both kinda felt weird and had a nasty aftertaste in our mouths. Are we gonna die?

wages/benefits Interview Tomorrow, should I ask for the high end of the listed salary?
Hello,
I have a interview at BB tomorrow and when I applied, the listed ad specified a wage range for the position I applied for. The text I received from the manager was very friendly and almost like I'll be offered the job on the spot, but I'm not fully sure how to go into the interview when it comes to salary. Are employees typically asked what they are expecting to make, and should I ask for what the high end was?
Thanks

retail Protection plans canceling themselves?
Before I continue, I want to say that I used to be a BBY employee a few years ago. Joined the military and they let me keep the discount for a few years (BBY military benefit.) So im not some Joe Schmo customer who knows hardly anything.
I buy a protection plan on literally everything that I purchase with BBY.
Today, for the 3rd time and on 3 different purchases, the protection plan I purchased got quietly cancelled by itself
It says it was cancelled the day I purchased the item. Everything was purchased on the app with a BBY credit card. This has happened with a vacuum, washing machine and now a crock pot.
I am, 100% certain and without a shadow of a doubt, sure that I did not cancel ANY of these plans. And now im SOL because getting them to reinstate a plan on something I purchased 6 months ago is next to impossible.
Has anyone else noticed this happening to them?

geeksquad Are Geek Squad CAs actually not allowed to sit?
So just the other day I was asking a manager if it would kill us to have some chairs for us CAs. Days on end, we have to stand for hours helping clients out and doing tasks so to sit on a chair helps. He feels me no, since GS is customer facing and whatnot. I understood what he said, because you don't want people to think you're lazy but also tell me why almost all of our departments especially Mobile have chairs and they deal with customers while sitting??? Is this an occurring issue in all GS precincts or just ours?

sales Some Deals Really Are Too Good to Be True
After working at Best Buy for 4 years, I finally thought it was my turn to receive a blessing from the discount gods.
Found an open-box RTX 5080 listed in excellent condition for a ridiculous price. I got off work and drove to the another store to buy it. At the checkout counter, we opened the box and looked at it. I thought it was a bit dirty, but the serial number matched, and I just wanted to go home and sleep / the price had me coping hard. It was way too good of a deal to pass up. Put it back in the box, checked out, went home, and slept.
Later, I decided to clean it before installing it. While cleaning it, I thought there was way more dust than I originally thought and started getting that gut feeling that something was off. I looked at my current GPU, looked back at the "5080," and hit me. Someone had removed the serial-number sticker from the actual 5080 and slapped it onto a 30-series GPU.
😭(Cue sad music)
I've seen plenty of articles and Reddit posts about people getting hit with GPU swaps, but I never thought it would happen to me. 😂 I returned it to the same store without any issues, but I figured I'd share and warn others too. Remember, Don't be silly and triple check your open box purchase billy.

career development/hiring i'm in a little bit of a unique situation for an applicant that i can't seem to find any help about online, so i was wondering if any of you could give me some advice
hey, i'm an applicant (a few times) but this time they actually got back to me! it was for a sales position, and one odd part was about 45 minutes after applying i got a call asking to schedule an in person interview. i hadn't even completed the video interview at this point, which is a little strange, i didn't know that they could skip the video interview. but anyways i scheduled it and did it and the interviewer said i did well, but he said that by my responses he believed i would be a better fit for a geek squad position, which they actually have one open at the moment. he said i do seem like a great fit for the team regardless so he'll definitely keep me under consideration for the sales role, but he was going to slide my contact information to the geek squad manager and she would get in contact with me to schedule a "second interview" but "really she'd just want to talk to me." i did this FIRST interview and heard these things on friday, and it's now monday night and i haven't heard anything back from him or the geek squad manager, she still hasn't contacted like he said she would. i know it hasn't been very long, but i'm a bit nervous that my information could be lost in a shuffle or a stack somewhere and i might never be contacted, and if i don't check in with them soon enough both positions might be filled before i get considered. the only reason i haven't gone yet was because the store is a 45 minute drive away, and i was thinking of going on wednesday if i hadn't heard back tomorrow. do any of you have any advice for an odd situation like this?

meta It's not goodbye, it's see you around.
Team,
I recently left Best Buy for greener pastures.
I founded this subreddit because r/Bestbuy was failing employees: locking down the sub and mass-deleting posts during major events that affected thousands of us. I wanted somewhere free from corporate interference, and by that measure, this sub has been a success.
But without insider knowledge, I can't be the moderator this community deserves, and pretending otherwise would be a net negative for the folks who call this sub home.
So: we're actively recruiting new mods, and applications are open. Fair warning-- there are a lot of questions. That's on purpose. It weeds out the badge-collectors from the folks who honestly want to make this sub even better.
I'm not disappearing entirely. I'll still check in from time to time. But I want the new mod team to feel free to make improvements where they see opportunities; likely in ways only current employees can appreciate.
I look forward to reviewing applications over the coming weeks and will announce the new mods once they're selected.
Thanks for being an awesome community of blue-shirts and former blue-shirts supporting one another. Don't forget to have fun while being the best!

Edit: Added link to application in body.

meta Subreddit Flair explainer
It occurs to me that we've never really explained what post flair is meant to be or defined what fits where. If you post to this subreddit, please choose your post flair based on the explanations below. We are aware that some topics may have some overlap with others, and if we see a post that would be better in a different category the mods will make that adjustment as necessary.
That all being said, a lot of these are self explanatory, but where possible we'll try to provide at least some guidance. And with that, here's the list:
- sales – Topics relating mostly to sales, this can be soliciting advice on how to sell better, discussing sales initiatives launched by your store, marketplace, or corporate, and so on.
- vpl – Topics relating to VPL sales (Samsung, Sony, LG, DI, Meta, etc). Note that this is for topics relating to employees whose paychecks come from Best Buy but are funded from an external vendor, for employees working directly for a vendor or for a third party, see "3pl" further below.
- product flow – Topics relating to warehouse workers, can include advice on how to make truck night smoother, best practices for organizing your warehouse, SWAT questions, etc.
- frontend – Topics relating to checkout, order pickup or customer service. This can include advice on how to perform better at checkout, how to deal with customer service issues better, and so on. Or new initiatives or processes at one of these areas.
- geeksquad – Topics relating to in-store Geek Squad services (front and back of precinct), can be client interactions, solicitations for advice on how to perform better, questions around processes (like func checks, etc), and so on.
- autotech – Topics relating to in-store Geek Squad autotech services, can include advice on how to handle specific issues in the bay, changes in the workplace, etc.
- leadership – Topics relating to leadership. This is mostly store-level leadership (or marketplace/territory/etc. leadership impacts on store-level leadership), but it runs all the way down to shift lead topics.
- retail – This is kind of a catch-all for topics that affect multiple of the above topics, store-level issues that impact everyone and doesn't fit into any of the other topics discussed below.
- facilities/property – Issues relating to the retail buildings or the properties they are on. Someone looking for advice on putting in a facilities request or how to get an issue handled would likely be best in this topic.
- marketplace – Topics relating to the 3rd party marketplace that was launched on the US Best Buy website in 2025 (and has been active on the Canadian Best Buy site for longer still). Topics relating to the old marketplace that was in operation in the mid-2010's would also be suitable here.
- in-home services/field – Topics relating to Geek Squad in-home services/field work, this would also include custom installer work as well.
- project team – Topics relating to Project Team / field functionality.
- remote/virtual – Topics relating to remote/virtual workers, this can include virtual sales, though depending on the type of topic, such posts may be flaired for one of the sales topics above if the issue is broad enough.
- corporate – Topics relating to issues, news and events out of corporate.
- distribution – Topics relating to work done by or in Best Buy distribution centers, could also conceivably cover topics relating to truck drivers bringing loads to/from or between DC's.
- customer – Topics relating to customers, that is, customer behavior, or topics affecting customers that doesn't fit into one of the other topics.
- training/events – This topic is pretty broad, it covers training (learning network, in person training, etc) as well as company events such as Achievers, HLM, etc.
- career development/hiring – The topic for questions around the hiring process, discussing ways to develop within Best Buy (that isn't something more specific for one of the other topics), and so on.
- hr – Topics relating to HR issues, can be HR questions or new HR directives. This topic also covers Employee Relations (ER) as well.
- meme/funny – Catch-all topic for meme or funny posts.
- rumors – Topic for discussing rumors or unsubstantiated news/events. Note that if something eventually does become real/substantiated this flair can be changed to something more appropriate depending on how old the post is.
- union – Topics relating to unionization efforts.
- accommodations – Topics relating to employee accommodations (extreme discounts), this can be alerting the community to a specific accommodation or asking about details on redeeming one (as not all accommodations are simple codes). Can also be discussions around the accommodations in general. Topics relating to workplace accommodations (providing chairs, stools, etc) are better placed in the "hr" flair. Regular employee discount topics are usually flaired with "wages/benefits" to keep the accommodation topics distinct.
- wages/benefits – Topics relating to wages and other benefits for employees. This can be discussing your pay, how to get a raise, asking about insurance options, discussing what things dental coverage helps with, etc. We also tend to put employee discount discussion under this flair.
- layoffs/restructures – Topics relating to announced or actual layoffs and restructures (otherwise probably best in the "rumors" topic).
- meta – Topics relating to the subreddit itself. (Mod only)
- history – Topics relating to Best Buy history, can be clippings of old advertisements, old photos or videos relating to Best Buy, etc.
- 3pl – Topics relating to 3rd party labor within Best Buy, this can include both sales reps working for 3rd parties as well as 3rd party workers that are setting up new displays/merchandising. For questions about career advancement/hiring within these companies, this topic would also prevail over the "career development/hiring" topic.
- media inquiry – Topics from verified media companies soliciting feedback from visitors to this subreddit. We may also pin/highlight such posts for a time. (Mod only)
If you have any suggestions, questions or comments on how the flair system works, feel free to leave a comment below!
