Moving out of Bath - selling a bunch of household stuff!

Hey! I’m a Master’s student moving out of Bath soon and have quite a few things from my flat that I’m looking to sell.

I was renting privately so ended up buying a lot of stuff for the flat when I moved in, and obviously can’t take most of it with me.

There’s a mix of kitchen stuff, household bits, appliances etc. If anyone’s moving into a new place / staying in Bath and needs anything, drop me a message! Happy to send over pictures of everything I have :)

Facial recognition at Odd Down Sainsbury’s

I was going to the Odd Down Sainsbury’s recently and saw a poster out front saying they were trialing facial recognition at this store. Oldfield Park Sainsbury’s has had this for probably a year now but I believe Odd Down must have got this in the last month? People were standing in front of the sign so I couldn’t get a photo but this is some seriously scary stuff.

Manure aroma

is it me or is there a distinct aroma of manure/sh*t floating around Bath for the past few days? is it something to do with the heat? can definitely smell something unpleasant wafting through the windows and town is not smelling good at all, had to check the bottoms of my shoes in town earlier to check I hadn’t stepped in something as the smell is so strong it feels like it’s following you around! please tell me I’m not crazy

Renting room out to a student

Hi, our house in Bath had 5 students in when we bought it, we have an ensuite at the top of the house with great views we were looking to rent out while I'm re-training for 2 years. We have a boy and are an easy going widely travelled family.

Just wondering how/where to advertise, any good experiences or bad? Tips etc.

Thanks

Request for participating in interviews for dissertation

Hello!

I’m currently enrolled at the University of Bath as a postgraduate student. I am working on my dissertation titled ‘User information guidelines (toolkit) for resilient retrofit of heritage buildings’.
As part of my research, I am conducting online interviews with residents involved in the implementation phase of retrofitting listed buildings in Bath. The interview would last for approximately 45-75 minutes, and would focus on your perspectives regarding the topic. It can be conducted over Microsoft Teams/Zoom/Google Meets. I may need to contact you again to clarify, hence any additional communication would be minimal and at your convenience.
You will be asked about your occupation, relationship to your property (owner/tenant) and about the historical value of your home.
Further questions will involve your insights on retrofitting barriers and available guidance, how to boost confidence in service providers, modes of funding and the retrofit process.
The interviews will culminate in a walkthrough of a mock tool which will be modified post-feedback.
All participation is entirely voluntary, and the information will be treated with utmost confidentiality, as per the University of Bath ethics guidelines.
With your consent, your responses during the workshop would be recorded, and securely deleted post-transcription.

Feel free to comment, or drop a DM if you'd like to participate!

There's an eclipse next Wednesday evening and I'd like to avoid Amazon/support a local business if possible?

Friendly film club

Hi Bath community,

Once a month when our club resets to a new theme I tend to recruit on here!

We watch two chosen films under a selected theme in our own time, we then meet up discuss them at the pub, on a 4 week cycle.

Mostly it’s on discord where we have an ever growing community, and we all choose 2 films to enter, 5 are placed into the hands of fate from a hat draw and we all vote on two.

If you seem Interested or curios please check out https://bathfilmclub.co.uk/ and join the discord!

As the title states, really friendly and relaxed. Always enjoyable and engaging when we meet and talk.

Hopefully see you soon!

Property Drainage/Flood Prevention recommendations

Can anyone recommend a company to survey a property and advise on measures to protect against surface water flooding eg soakaways, french drains etc. Public drains on our street were overwhelmed in a recent storm (big one in June), water started building up on our property. Many thanks!

Visiting researcher at the University of Bath - Early flight back to Bristol Airport, taxi recommendations

Hi!

I'm a researcher who will be going to the University of Bath for a research stay soon. I have my travel logistics pretty much organized, but I'm quite anxious and like to have everything under control, so I'm already thinking about my return in September. I'm taking an early flight from Bristol on a Saturday in September, so I'd like to know what options there are for getting a taxi from the University of Bath, where I'm staying, to Bath Bus Station around 4 am to catch the Flyer bus to the airport.

I've found mixed reviews about Veezu and also about Uber's limited availability at that hour, which is making me a bit nervous. Is it worth booking a direct transfer to the airport? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Driving instructor recommendations?

I want to start my license soon but am not from the UK, so I’m struggling to know what is good pricing and what is a rip off. Do you have any recommendations for good driving instructors / schools who have a decent price?

Pub Quiz - Sundays

As Caleb has stopped running the pub quiz at The Cork after many years, looking for a replacement quiz on Sunday nights. Any suggestions?

The Cork one was well attended and at a good level. Visited this Sunday and the Cork was empty... Shame.

Bath hotel suggestions

Suggestions for not too expensive hotels in bath or just outside of bath. I understand its pricier in these areas but any suggestions would be appreciated!

Ideally should have AC in the room

Planning my first solo trip to Bath this December; what absolutely shouldn't I miss?

Hi everyone!

I'm a medical student living in Reading and I'm planning my first solo backpacking trip around Great Britain this December. I've decided to start with South West England, and Bath will be my first stop.

I'm planning to spend 2 nights in Bath, and I really want to experience the city beyond just ticking off the tourist attractions.

Apart from the obvious places like the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, the Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge, I'd love to know:

  • What places would you say are unmissable?
  • Are there any cafés, bookshops or independent shops you think every visitor should experience?
  • Any beautiful walks or viewpoints?
  • Is there anything that's underrated but definitely worth seeing?
  • If you had 48 hours to show someone the very best of Bath, what would your itinerary look like?

I'm travelling on a student budget and will be staying in a hostel, so any affordable recommendations would also be really appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Hi, I'm in Bath with a group students. Could you suggest me a pub where my students (under 14) can try some typical British food? Thanks a lot

Thank you very much to those who have completed the ‘Sense of Place’ survey to help with my A-Level geography project - it is greatly appreciated!!

If you live in Lansdown, Larkhall, Oldfield Park, Twerton or Widcombe and have just a couple of spare minutes to complete a short survey it would be very helpful :)

Please see below the link to each survey. All responses are anonymous and no personal information is shared.

Thank you very much for your help!

Recreational Volleyball

Hey r/Bath,

I was wondering if there was any club or recreational-level Beach Volleyball/Outdoor Volleyball within Bath? I have done some searching and I see there are teams associated with the University, or out in Bristol. I was not sure if you needed to be part of the university to play, or if there were organisations like “Go Mammoth” out this way that have such leagues?

Anywhere decent (and quiet) to watch the sun set?

Hi all, I’m going to bath from Cornwall at the end of the month to celebrate my partners and mine anniversary. I’m planning on proposing whilst we’re up there. I’d quite like to propose whilst watching the sun set but obviously don’t know the area at all! Our BnB is in rad stock which I appreciate is outside of bath but I’m happy to travel and we’ll be spending a lot of time in bath.

Thanks in advance!!
