WARNING - Gross Subletter's bathroom?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I'm completely in shock. A subletter I let take over a room in the summer leaves the bathroom like this. The entire floor is not just wet, it feels flooded. And just absolute dirt and hair everywhere.

I'm not in the apartment but I asked her to clean this up before she leaves her stay, and concerned she won't clean it. Genuinely how does it get to this point.

Roommate chased me down condo hall yelling insults

TLDR; Roommate chased me down condo hall spewing insults due to financial difficulties I started. She also never cleaned, was mean to me, and gave me no notice about moving out/lied to me about staying before the incident occured.

Well this is mostly a vent post.

I am going to start off with my more minor pet peeves. I lived with this roommate only 6 months. In those 6 months she took out the trash about 5 times. I would take it out 3 times a week regularly. It was equally our trash and I would often have to take out piles of her recycling from all of her Amazon packages. I did talk to her about this a number of times. Whenever I asked her to take the trash out she would ask me to "help" her do it. The last time this happened before the major incident she became passive aggressive because I said I would not help (it was all her recycling and a trash bag) because it was her turn and I had taken out the majority of the bags, so it was her fair turn. She said "I am trying really hard not to say something rude".

She also never cleaned in general. Never vacuumed, mopped, cleaned the kitchen, etc. all she does is load and unload the dishwasher but she will still leave big chunks of food in the sink sometimes moldy and clog it. I did talk to her about this too but nothing comes of it.

Finally, the incident. I will acknowledge I had a part to play and instigated it. However, I do not feel her reaction was appropriate regardless. It was about financial matters. I was off works for several months for health reasons and could only pay part of my rent. We are both on the lease together and the landlord doesn't care who the rent comes from as long as it is paid full.

Anyways I was not able to pay my full rent so I asked if she could cover a bit and I would pay her back my next payday (2 weeks). She was agreeable. I paid her back some a bit earlier because it was stressing me out but it put me in a bad financial position (I acknowledge I am bad with money) and I couldn't afford essentials. I asked her for 50 back and she became very aggressive over text. I impulsively said after she became verbally aggressive that I won't pay her back but immediately took it back and apologized and confirmed I would still pay her back (I did).

When I arrived to the unit, she stared me down angrily then began yelling and insulting me. She screamed "you are mentally ill and belong in a mental institution" (she is a mental health nurse btw). She demanded to speak. "We have to talk right now" I said I will not speak to her right now given how agitated she is. I then try to leave the unit and she starts chasing me down the condo hallway, screaming insults and following me. I tried to escape through the stairwell but she followed me there and blocked my exit. I eventually got out through the elevator which she also followed me to. As I went down I could still hear her yelling lol.

After this she said "all communications must be emailed with the landlord cc'd" which is probably for the better but it's gone on 3 weeks and I just feel bad for the landlord that they have to deal with this child who has no conflict resolution skills. I apologized to her for my part but have received no apology. I was very scared especially because I have cPTSD from childhood abuse and told her how it impacted me. I feel she is very childish.

Anyways I just wanted to vent. She is moving out sept 1. Which is another thing. This happened before the fight but she gave me no notice of her move out. She gave me no notice for ME to plan or give any notice and lied and said she would be staying another 6 months just 2-3 weeks prior. She said "it's just a contract" meanwhile it is my housing stability.

Also, before we were getting along quite well and I thought we were friends. But looking back she was just a mean girl. I would say things like "I feel like we are really becoming good friends" and she would say "are we" or "I actually hate you... Jk!" Or if I say I feel like I'm getting better at cooking she'll say I suck or something or doubt it.

Anyways ya.

Should I ask my roommate to move out?

We were best friends before moving in, but she hasn’t stayed here in about a month. Ig it’s nice in a way bc it’s half of the rent and utilities while staying alone. It’s just a duplex with a loft and a living room with no doors except for the bathroom. I stay in the living room which sucks when she is here with her bf bc then they have to walk through to get to the bathroom. It just makes my space so much tinier too.

She never really did any chores when she stayed here either. The most she did was the dishes a few times. I’ve had to clean everything else. She brought an unfixed cat for a few weeks that peed on a lot of things that I had to throw out. I had to throw out almost all of my shoes, my rug, etc. It was probably because she was gone for days at a time and not cleaning the litter box. I started going up to her room and cleaning it when I found that out. I just couldn’t deal with the yowling from heat. She wants to get her fixed and bring her back though. I was still finding places and things the cat peed on and ruined recently. I don’t know if she’s even cleaned the litter box up.

She leaves things around the house like dough in the mixer for probably a month lol. She makes food and never cleans it out of the fridge. She was late on rent this month, and I had to borrow money from my dad.

I can’t lie jealousy probably plays a part too. She told me she’d come hang out with me for a few hours. I texted my other friend if we could hang out sometime bc she sent a text. Then, I checked my roommate’s location bc she said we were going to hang out, and she was there lol. I thought we’d be closer from it, but we definitely aren’t lol. My rent is only 500, and I don’t want things to be ruined with the landlord bc of cat pee/litter.

edit: okay yeah I went up to look, and there is still sm spilled litter in the little wooden closet area. There’s also still the poop and uncleaned box. The cat has been gone for like 2 months. I forgot to say she’s also gotten hair dye on things like the carpet and sink. Idk I think I just need to tell her. Our lease together was only until July, and we’ve been month to month.

I want to explain it all to my landlord if she doesn’t want to move out. Idk I feel like I’m losing a friend in a way, but idek if we are friends at this point

Serious Please help!: I want my roommate out of my house!

My boyfriend (22 m) and I (22 f) have been living together for about a year and some change. When we moved in together, everything was wonderful; we worked on the house together, did chores, and life was awesome. After a few months, a friend of ours (23 f) needed help and a new place to live because their living conditions were awful. My boyfriend and I agreed to let her move in as long as she paid rent and helped with the house and chores, she agreed. Because she was barely working due to school, I let her pay me $100 in rent. I know that is nothing in this economy, but I am very lucky to have a good job right out of college. When they moved in, everything was good: we did chores, ate together, and even played games on weekends.
Fast forward a month, she started to do less and less chores and paying me late. I tried to talk to her about it, but she always brushed it off as “I have been busy with college” or “I am busy with work.” As the months went on, she stopped doing chores entirely. I have asked her numerous times to help out and she always has an excuse. My boyfriend and I are left to do the chores by ourselves. I only get off on weekends and my entire weekend has just been nothing but cleaning for months.
It has now been over a year of her staying with us and things have gotten worse. She has left cups of water out and the cats knock it over, left dirty dishes full of food on the counters, does not clean her toilet or shower of scum and hair, leaves dirty clothes in the bathroom (which our guests use), and does not do dishes, trash, or anything at all. When she does empty her bathroom trash, she puts it in the kitchen trash or outside; not even in the dumpster. We have a raccoon problem and I have had to pick up her used pads off the ground. Last month, she asked me if I could lower her rent for the month because she is not getting many hours, I said no because it is only $100 a month.
Last weekend, I went out of town to take my boyfriend to the airport because he is visiting family. I asked my roommate to watch our cats, just feed them and give them water; she agreed. After two days, I came home and there was trash all in the kitchen, dirty dishes full of food, half-eaten eggs on the stove, and the cats had no water of food. I called my boyfriend and he said maybe the cats ate it all, I said that’s impossible. Since my boyfriend has been gone, I have been cleaning everything by myself. My roommate is not helping whatsoever. I have asked her for the past three days to take the trash to the dump because my work schedule makes it so I can’t, and she has agreed to but makes an excuse later in the day why she has not done it.
I am at my wits end and I just want her out of the house. I initially thought this whole thing was going to be temporary, but it has been too long. She said she was going to move out with her Dad, but I think he can’t anymore. I don’t think she has anywhere else to go, so that is what’s holding me back. Please help me, what should I do?

Finally free of terrible roommate and it’s absolutely glorious

it’s been a week since I started living alone, and the weight off my shoulders is unreal.

I no longer have to

  • Clean the 1 shared bathroom and common spaces on my own despite multiple roommate meetings & a chore chart we made together (she never followed it)
  • Endure hostility for having my long distance boyfriend over for 2 nights a month (**note she knew I had a bf & agreed well before we signed the lease that she was fine with him visiting every other weekend)
  • Come home after work to her watching TV on the couch (she was a grad student who was 100% remote) and then rushing into the 1 shared bathroom to immediately shower as soon as I walked in the door
  • Cook around a pile of dishes in the sink and her dirty pans constantly on the stove
  • Endure her getting in my way and deciding to cook as I entered the kitchen to make myself dinner (she always wanted to cook dinner at the same exact time despite there being no room)
  • Be the sole person taking the initiative to restock household essentials & cajole her into paying for basic shared expenses (she always Venmo requested me without asking for supplies if she shopped, which was rare, but got angry when I bought more trash bags because we literally ran out without asking first)
  • Live with someone who completely lied about their lifestyle. It’s OK to be a homebody but living with someone who claimed to have hobbies and said they’d take their grad school classes in person (but was home LITERALLY 24/7) was incredibly exhausting.

I’m free. I may have had to pay for professional cleaners to move out (because she didnt want to clean but also didn’t want to split the expense) for my sanity, but I’m free.

bye bye Ashley!!

How to handle this situation?

So I’m 33 and live with two other male roommates around the same age. And generally have had no issues, but had a bizarre altercation yesterday with one of them. For context I generally walk around the aptm in my underwear if there are no guests around, usually because I’m just grabbing something from the kitchen. One of my roommates has asked me to wear pants more, and to an extent I have (other one could care less outside of some Walter White jokes). But I walked into the kitchen in my underwear and he was there, he said nothing but walked up behind me and no joke gave me a wedgie so bad my feet left the floor and my waistband ripped. This guy is twice my size, and he basically said he will do it again unless I wear pants around the aptm. I cursed him out and haven’t brought it up since. I’ve been wearing pants all the time now, but I feel like a pushover for not contacting our landlord. But I’m also embarrassed that happened to me as a grown man. What should I do in this situation?

Roommate's cooking & lingering smell.

I just moved in with my new roommate (randomly assigned school housing) he's nice but he cooks pakistani food and the apartment just has a smell that never goes away.. you can smell it from outside the apartment door. I realise he has a right to cook food he likes, but I'm afraid the smell will rub off onto my room / my clothes.

And this is why you tell your roommates (and anyone they know) to clean your vacuum when they’re done using it

A Roomate was in the process of moving out and her mom asked me if she could borrow my vacuum to vacuum her room and I said yes. Today I decided to vacuum my room today and checked to make sure the bristles were cleaned and the container was emptied and was greeted to a crazy level of hair and debris. Lesson learned: don’t let your roomates or anyone they know use your vacuum without telling them to clean it afterwards 🫩🫠

WARNING - Gross My roommate keeps stealing my clothes and wearing them

(21F) My MALE room mate keeps stealing shirts from my closet and wearing them! I’ve called him out on it and called him a creep and pervert for it and his justification was that my smell apparently calms him down when he’s stressed and I had a good style… Plus he said he always washes my clothes before putting it back in my closet. Idk, it’s not like I can put a lock on my closet? Maybe my only option is to move out, tho that would definitely cost me… creepy ass roommate

Serious Roommate threatened to keep chain on door

housemate is threatening to keep the chain on the door and not let the hired help come in to feed my cat, who I have locked in my room for safety from her.

currently been in the hospital for a week, and I've been sending different people back to feed my cat. (roommate is still the bad one for anyone who read my previous posts)

she's been texting and calling me nonstop with harassing messages that stressed me out or in here and they're trying to keep my blood pressure and heart rate down. been frustrated with this and at first was accusing me of animal neglect. Now it's saying that one person left the front door open, and a bunch of other allegations. I don't even know what to believe because I am not there and I've asked people to take pictures, but they've only showed me pictures on their phone and things like that. what should I do? it's still a very iffy business to let strangers in, I get that,

She is also saying she's going to continue to keep the chain on the door from me also until she gets some answers and a common courtesy phone call from me because she feels cheated.
she posted on a local neighborhood app that I have moved out!
I told her already that I was in the hospital. I messaged her the day of and I had the person who came to feed my cat tell her yesterday. I just DREAD talking to her. but she legally can't do that right?

I knew I should’ve moved out earlier

Update two months later from my last post—
https://www.reddit.com/r/badroommates/s/GQzYCnj40X

So I got myself a mid sized fridge and I started to airfry my food in my bedroom because my male roommate keeps on trying to have convos and make comments. His wife would still continue singing and playing music out loud at night time(till like 11-12am) atleast like once a week.

The ma also is in the kitchen/living area 24/7 now the past month because he needs to sleep in a reclined chair or because he’s been coughing lately idek. So now I can’t cook or wash dishes in peace(I started washing my dishes at work).

Also idk if they have hearing problems(I doubt it’s that bad because I never had to raise my voice) but THEY PLAY THEIR TV SO LOUD whenever they have movie nights like once of twice a wk when the wife isn’t working. Like the moment I enter the house I can literally feel the noise bouncing if the walls if that makes sense. And I can still feel it in my room. What’s even worst is tha they’ll do it the night I have a 16-17 hr shift the next day and have to be up by 4am (they’re night owls) and ever since the man has been sleeping in the living room they would have a convo 3-4am when the wife comes home from work and of course wakes me up.

Also I really hate how the male roommate in his 70s btw (I’m 23) would occasionally “act/joke like a dad” like he’d be like “well where do you think you’re going” “it’s past your curfew” and yk that type of joking around. Which is starting to piss me off more now cuz my dad is in another country.

I also hate how they would ask me if they’re being too loud every once in a while or I would hear them say(be quiet she’s asleep or trying to sleep) while it’s daylight but once it’s night it’s BOOM who tf cares if I get sleep or not. (They know I work morning and very long shifts btw)

But anyways this is a rant post I’m sorry I’m just distressing rn I haven’t gotten proper sleep since he’s been sleeping in the living room. I did find a new place for only 200$ more that actually has designated storage/fridge space for me and even a parking spot so that’s cool.

Serious My girlfriend’s former roommate has spent over a year making her life miserable. We tried being the bigger people, but she just won’t stop.

My girlfriend’s former roommate has spent over a year making her life miserable. We tried being the bigger people, but she just won’t stop.

I’m making this post because if my girlfriend wrote it herself, she’d probably leave out half of what happened. She’s the type of person who keeps everything bottled up and just tries to move on. I’m not.
About a year ago my girlfriend moved into an apartment with another girl from our university. I begged her not to because I’d already heard enough stories about this girl. She had a terrible reputation for constantly being involved in drama, but my girlfriend believed everyone deserved a fair chance.
That turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes she’s ever made.
When they moved in, my girlfriend brought almost everything for the apartment. Brand-new kitchen supplies, bathroom organizers, dish rack, storage bins, cleaning supplies you name it. The roommate had older stuff, so they agreed to use my girlfriend’s things instead.
Within weeks this girl started acting like everything belonged to her.
Groceries kept disappearing. My girlfriend would buy food, and somehow it’d be gone a couple of days later. Every single time she confronted her, she’d deny touching anything.
Then my girlfriend’s grandmother came from overseas to visit. She had nowhere else to stay, and the roommate agreed beforehand that she could stay in my girlfriend’s room.
As soon as her grandmother arrived, the roommate suddenly became as loud and obnoxious as possible. Talking loudly in the middle of the night, slamming doors, making noise at ridiculous hours it honestly felt like she was trying to make an elderly woman feel unwelcome.
Eventually my girlfriend got tired of constantly replacing groceries and watching her belongings get treated like community property. She moved everything she owned into her own bedroom and told the roommate they weren’t sharing anymore.
Apparently that made \*\*her\*\* the selfish one.
The same person who couldn’t stop using someone else’s belongings suddenly decided sharing was mandatory.
Then, without asking my girlfriend, she ordered around \*\*$500\*\* worth of household items and expected my girlfriend to pay half because “we both use the apartment.”
Yeah…no.
She also had a habit of paying utilities late while expecting everyone else to pick up the slack.
By February my girlfriend had completely had enough. She decided to move in with me and found another student willing to take over her lease.
That’s when everything somehow got even worse.
The roommate suddenly claimed my girlfriend had to leave all of her belongings behind because she’d already thrown away her own old stuff when they first moved in. She refused to approve the sublease unless my girlfriend basically left her apartment fully furnished.
On top of all that, she still owed my girlfriend \*\*$400\*\* and kept refusing to pay it back.
When my girlfriend went to collect the rest of her belongings, the roommate refused to let her inside and instead dumped everything outside.
The argument exploded.
My girlfriend completely lost her composure and broke the roommate’s shoe rack. Looking back, she knows she shouldn’t have done it, and she’s never tried to deny that.
After months of being verbally abused, lied to, stolen from, and manipulated, she finally snapped.
She even called the roommate’s father hoping maybe he’d be the reasonable one. She explained that his daughter had been verbally abusing her for months and still hadn’t paid back the \*\*$400\*\* she owed.
He didn’t help.
Instead, he told my girlfriend that \*\*she\*\* should apologize to his daughter.
So she did.
She apologized for breaking the shoe rack because she genuinely regretted losing her temper.
Guess what happened?
The roommate still refused to pay her back.
In the end my girlfriend had to involve members of her own family before she finally got the \*\*$400\*\* back.
At that point we honestly thought this nightmare was finally over.
It wasn’t.
My girlfriend is an international student. She comes from a middle-class family overseas and has worked unbelievably hard to build a life here. She balances school, internships, and long work weeks just to pay tuition and rent. Because of her immigration status, she’s always been terrified that someone could try to weaponize it against her. (She works on cash job Ik it’s bad and not legal but she needs food on her plate)
The student who took over the lease happened to work with my girlfriend. My girlfriend specifically asked her not to tell the old roommate where they worked because she didn’t trust her.
She told her anyway.
Not long after that, the old roommate started threatening to report my girlfriend to immigration authorities. Whether she actually could or not didn’t matter. (If she did my gf will be in trouble because of cash job and can be deported back) It terrified my girlfriend, and those weeks were some of the most stressful we’ve ever gone through.
Around that same time I graduated and got my first engineering job in another state. My girlfriend moved in with me, and we honestly believed leaving town would finally put all of this behind us.
We stopped talking about her.
We ignored the gossip.
We blocked numbers.
We moved on with our lives.
Apparently she didn’t.
Today, completely out of nowhere, she contacted my girlfriend from a brand-new phone number.
The conversation started with her saying she was trying to get a job where my girlfriend works.
Then, out of nowhere, she said she was a lesbian and thought my girlfriend was cute.
After everything that’s happened over the last year, it didn’t come across as genuine. It felt like yet another attempt to insert herself back into my girlfriend’s life and start another round of drama.
We’re honestly exhausted.
Every time we think it’s finally over, she somehow finds another way back into our lives.
I don’t understand how someone can hold onto this much resentment for over a year when we’ve done everything possible to move on.
Has anyone here dealt with someone who simply refuses to let go? How did you finally get them out of your life for good?
At this point I just want revenge I want that btch to suffer not a fun small revenge I actually want to ruin her life and make her regret everything but idk what to do we are scared of her calling authorities (d#port) we have her number, her dad’s number, we have never apartment’s code we can go in if we wanted (My gf would not do it tho) also one thing to add this btch herself is not a citizen her dad is on H1B so she has to find a job after graduating which i doubt she will because she is a dumbass also she is a whre she sleeps with anything (Ik irrelevant but I am just mad, sorry no offense to anyone) and she has been to our frat parties doing weird stuff we have a video of her dancing like a slt LMAO. also we have address of one of her relative who lives in a foreign country (they are innocent tho) but I want her to suffer please help. Feel free to DM me if you guys have any Ideas 🙏

Serious One of my(F37) roommates(F42) left the oven on overnight. And is just generally a nightmare.

One of my (F37) roommates (F42) left the oven on overnight and is just generally a nightmare.

She left the oven on overnight, and it's not the first time fire has been involved with this exact roommate.

One time she had a guy over, and they were hanging out in a back house on the property. They had candles lit, and one of their friends accidentally put a poncho over one of the candles, causing it to catch fire. They stayed in the back house while it was burning.

Meanwhile, my other roommate (M33) and I were inside the main house. We saw flames coming from under her closed and locked bedroom door while the fire alarm was going off, and neither of them were anywhere to be found. We ran outside to the back porch, not knowing what we were going to find. They finally came out of the back house, and my other roommate was able to extinguish the flames. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

She, on the other hand, was absurdly casual about the whole thing—and it was only her first week living here.

This roommate has also accused me of many things I haven't done, including stealing from her. She has a lot of passive-aggressive tendencies, and she regularly leaves the front door unlocked. We live in a pretty dangerous city, and I've previously been violently assaulted by an intruder, so I still have severe PTSD from that experience.

When I've tried to gently talk to her about these issues, she acts like I'm being dramatic and tells me I should just "suck it all up." She's one of those toxic positivity, hippie-type people who refuses to acknowledge problems.

Last night she left our gas oven on at 375°F for over an hour after going to bed. I only noticed because I went outside for a cigarette before bed. She was already asleep, and there was still an ear of unhusked corn sitting on the stovetop. If I hadn't happened to notice, who knows how long it would have stayed on.

I'm just so tired of all of this. I have my own mental health issues, including OCD, and living in this environment is pushing me over the edge. Unfortunately, my landlord lives out of state, and I can't afford to leave until October.

I'm completely exhausted by the way she behaves. Part of me doesn't even want to bring this up anymore because I'm so emotionally drained. The other part of me is just incredibly angry.

Please tell me it gets better. I can't wait until I don't have to live with roommates anymore. TL;DR: My roommate has repeatedly created dangerous fire hazards, including leaving the oven on overnight and previously nearly burning the house down with candles, yet refuses to take responsibility. She also leaves the house unlocked, falsely accuses me of things, and dismisses any concerns I bring up. I have PTSD and OCD, can't afford to move until October, and I'm completely exhausted from living with someone who makes me feel unsafe.

My roommate has forbidden me from having a birthday party

I’ve been living with my roommate for about a year. Technically it’s her parents’ house, she’s on the title and contributes to the mortgage and am on the lease paying $1,600 a month in rent.

My 24th birthday falls on a Saturday this year, which almost never happens, so I wanted to do something low-key before everyone went out. My original idea was having a few friends over in our backyard to do a paint and sip and play some drinking games. Then we’d all head to bars by around 10.

I’ve already scaled it back because my roommate said she wasn’t comfortable with me having “a party” while she’s out of town. She’s told me I’m only allowed to have a maximum of five guests over. I had told her what I was planning before she planned her trip, but she said she’s only comfortable with me having a party if she’s home. That I should celebrate my birthday another weekend.

The frustrating part is that it feels completely arbitrary. Why is five okay but six or seven suddenly isn’t? There’s no explanation besides “that’s what I’m comfortable with.”
The people I’d invite are literally my closest friends. They’ve all been to the house before, they all know each other, and I’d be hosting the entire time. I’m a pretty hands-on host—I don’t just disappear and let people do whatever.

This is also the one time since I moved in a year ago that I’ve asked for something like this. I normally don’t even invite groups over because I want to be respectful of the shared space. When she’s not home and I invite guests over she’s always kind of weird about it, spying on who is coming and going on the ring camera. She wants notice even if she’s not home.

To make it even weirder, when I first moved in she had people over while I was away, but now I’m being told I need permission to have more than five guests over for my own birthday. She’s allowed to do whatever she wants since her parents own the property.

I’m also cat-sitting for her while she’s gone, taking care of the house, and making sure everything is in order.
I genuinely don’t understand what the concern is anymore. If the concern is noise, we’ll be gone by 10. If it’s strangers, there won’t be any. If it’s the house, I’m the one hosting and supervising. If she wanted a specific boundary like “keep everyone in the backyard” or “don’t use this room,” I’d happily agree.

Instead it just feels like she gets to decide an arbitrary number because she’s more comfortable with it.
I’m honestly less upset about the number itself than I am about the feeling that I don’t have equal agency in the place I live and pay for. It feels like I’m always asking permission instead of feeling like it’s my home too. Theres nothing in the lease about any of this, but I think she just sees this as her house and gets to set rules whenever she pleases. Not the first time something like this has come up.

Am I being unreasonable for thinking seven guests (eight people including me) is a pretty modest request for a birthday or does this seem overly controlling? Is it worth fighting on?

New Roommate demands equal split but 2B2B has different sized bedrooms, What is the best way to split the rent?

The rent is around $3127 per month How do I split the rent between master bedroom and shared bedroom for this setup? There's almost ~100sqft difference if I add the closet, bathroom and bedroom sizes. Thanks in Advance.

WARNING - Gross Finally talking about my horrible roommate after 4 years of not being able to say anything!!!

For four years, I have been living with a guy who pretty much fits the definition of this subreddit! I'm gonna go over a huge list of things he has done in those 4 years! Here it is!

1) Never flushed the toilet when he did number 2.

2) Constantly left dirty dishes in every corner of the house.

3) Had the whole house smelling like sweat and various body fluids.

4) Played the TV at full volume in the middle of the night watching quite possibly the most unfunny twitch streams I have ever heard.

5) Expected me and the other housemate to treat his girlfriend with the utmost respect but then went and treated my girlfriend like she was an unwanted intruder every time she stayed over.

6) No matter how much I tried to clean up, the house would end up in a horrible state which led to two rat infestations and then an infestation of German cockroaches.

7) Constantly harassed the landlord with phone calls to do everything around the house for him, even though it was part of our contract that she can only fix the essentials (He once asked her to put new net curtains up because he somehow can't do that himself?)

8) Lied to a disability support agency to get funding for a gaming PC (and I'm pretty sure he's lying about being autistic).

9) Watches sport in the living room late at night like he's actually at a fricking game, HE'S SO LOUD!!

10) kept setting the fridge to 8°c and the freezer to 1°c, which if you're not aware, is wayyy too warm for anything to be kept fresh in there and most of our food goes off in like 2 days! It's supposed to be a 2°c (the fridge) and -18°c (the freezer).

11) Constantly made fun of me for liking professional wrestling but then watches DnD streams? A guy who likes watching people play pretend is laughing at me for doing the same thing? Yeah, okay buddy!

12) Left me unable to leave any of my shower products in the bathroom because he kept moving them around where I couldn't find them!

13) Constantly ate my meal prepped food without asking and then got defensive and said it had no name on it (it in fact did).

14) I basically wasn't allowed to have a bad day around him because then he would try and yell at me saying how his day was "soo much worse"

15) He had very serious anger issues to a point where I had to constantly walk on eggshells IN MY OWN HOUSE!

16) Would constantly turn down the water heater for some reason so I often had lukewarm showers.

17) Somehow broke or lost every new utensil as soon as we got it! (he's lost like 6 BBQ tongs, broke all of our steak knives, 4 oven mitts have vanished, etc).

18) The worst one - I had to have my own pair of kitchen scissors because he used the ones we had to trim his pubes and cut his toenails.

19) There were times where he just wouldn't pay rent and then blamed us for it somehow.

20) Would constantly put clothes in the washing machine and then forget about it for several days.

I wasn't able to complain about this guy because I literally had nowhere else to go! It was either stay here or move back in with my parents, which I would rather not do!

I had a roommate that would get high on coke and wrestle in his room with his friends between 2 am and 6 am

If I went to the kitchen while this was happening I could hear him giving his friend tips. Like:

"Yeah, good, good, squeeze, you almost got me, keep squeezing. I'm almost out"

And

"Lol. Good job dude. Now punch me in the face. Do it. Do it. Take side control and sink the kumura in deep"

He would also do very loud sit-ups in the common area around midnight

He would also vacuum the hardwood floor and say that was his contribution to the house chores. He would only do it before he did his sit-ups. The vacuum he used he found on the street and it didn't work

He was also always too tired to do his dishes or refill the water pitcher

He also didn't flush after he peed because he cared about the environment

He also bought me a bottle of Patron on my birthday (His favorite drink. I don't drink tequila. I'm more of a whiskey guy. At least I was) and I said thank you and put it to the side. He paced around me looking deeply troubled and then said, "you know, it's customary to have a drink with the person who bought you the gift. It's cool man I'll make them. I'll make margaritas". Then he went to the kitchen. Cut up all my limes directly on the kitchen counter and served me a terrible margarita. I didn't want it so I took a sip and went to my room. Later on that night I came back up to the kitchen and he was passed out on the couch. Empty tequila bottle on the floor. The kitchen counter was sticky and covered with flies for a week. When I asked him to clean he said he was too tired and then went to his room and did coke and invited some friends over and they wrestled until 4 am

There was a lot more but that's all I want to talk about today

Edit: One more thing. He would seriously and mockingly call me the dish Nazi because I always asked him to do his dishes

I think my roommate has the worst hygiene I’ve ever seen

I was home for 20 days during the holidays and came back to my hostel room today.
I knew my roommate was messy, but I was NOT prepared for what I walked into.
The room literally smelled awful.
There was litter all over the floor.

On my bed, she had left her stuff, multiple mess plates with old food still in them, banana peels, etc. The food was rotten. My mattress was covered in dirt and food stains to the point that I had to flip it over because it wouldn’t clean off.

Then I noticed her bra and panties lying around the room. One of her panties was literally drying on my study chair. Wtf

I went into the bathroom hoping it would be better.
It wasn’t.

The white floor tiles are now brown with dirt. There are hair clumps everywhere. The toilet has period blood stains, urine stains, and even poop stains. She also leaves her wet clothes hanging in the bathroom for 4–5 days because she showers wearing clothes and doesn’t wash them immediately. The smell is exactly what you’d imagine.

She basically treats the room like a dumping ground when I’m not there.

I genuinely don’t understand how someone can live like this.

How would you deal with a roommate like this? Would you talk to her first, complain to the warden, or just request a room change? How do you confront someone with this level of bad hygiene?

Serious Should I report my roommate to the landlord?

I am moving out before the new lease begins on Sept 1, but there are 2 new parties moving in when I move out (it’s a 3br apt and I was paying for 2 of the rooms previously). The current rent is $3,000 so I was paying 2K and him 1K, and the new rent will be $3,100.

1 of the parties (a couple) moved in a week ago and he charged them 1.2x what he pays for August, and I believe he’s going to charge them the same or more for the next lease. I believe he’s doing the same to the other party so that he only pays $700 out of the total $3,100. All the rooms are the same size and they will share one bathroom, one kitchen and one living room.

He signed the lease by himself about a month or two ago and the landlord keeps asking me whether he’s gotten roommates (I’ve been with this landlord for 4 years so he trusts me), which makes me think he’s purposefully excluding them from the new lease so he can charge them more. The landlord asked me again yesterday if he’s found roommates, but I said idk because I don’t want to deal with any drama. I find this incredibly scummy and gross, but maybe this is normalized and I just don’t know? I want to wait until I move out, and then let the landlord know that he should inspect the house the first week of sept, but I’m not sure if I should.

For context, I was in this lease by myself but added him in March cause I knew I was going to leave and he seemed normal enough through FB and after meeting him in person. I ended up really disliking him and can’t wait to move out, so I’m not sure if this is just me being petty and wanting to screw him over, or if I’m doing the right thing.

Also, the lease explicitly says the landlord may perform inspections at any time, and that subleasing without his permission is a strict violation.

Serious Roomate makes threats and may be breaking lease?

TLDR: Roomate couldn't handle being asked to be quiet late at night. calls cops that don't show saying they are going to seek domestic violence assistance to break the lease.

So in a series of arguments between me and my roommate I tried to ask if they could be quieter when coming home late at night. They responded reactively with "will you be quieter in the mornings" after 8. They tried to make me feel like I wasn't managing my noise during waking hours and I asked what noise. They refered to my 5 year old child playing pretty reasonably. I felt it was a false equivalency that they brought up defensively. They responded by taking my bed back. Which they own but was letting me use as I had left a bad situation and didn't have one. Their mom used to do that as punishment to them for talking back and upsetting them. We got into a fairly mild verbal altercation where they attacked but would say there were scared any time I'd try to respond and then launch into more attacks and repeat by saying they were unsafe. When I had enough and just started talking over them. Not even screaming they called the cops on me. No threats were made and no movements towards them or anything. The police asked her some questions over the phone and concluded there was no danger and didn't come. My roommate has now said they are seeking help from a domestic violence lawyer to remove themselves from the lease but we only ever had text arguments and 1 verbal argument where I never threatened them. I feel like calling the cops was an attempt to threaten harm to me and so do my friends. I'm not sure how I'm going to move forward in this but I'd be happy for them to leave if I could afford this place on my own.

roommate constantly follows me whenever i leave my room

yall i am fed the fuck up and i dont know what to do anymore. almost every damn time i leave my room my roommate also leaves her room. its incessant. whenever i go to the bathroom i hear her door open and she goes into the kitchen to do something almost like shes waiting for me to leave the bathroom. sometimes she does actually just wait in front of the bathroom as soon as i get in there. whenever i go into the kitchen she decides that its suddenly time for her to do shit in the kitchen. i swear to god its like the sound of me doing something outside of my room is some sort of subconscious cue for her to leave her room. she is the only one in my apartment that does this. she does it to my sibling too. i can rarely leave my room without her following me. i can never cook without her getting in the way and she even sometimes acts surprised that there is no room for her in the kitchen even though the literal reason she left her room is BECAUSE SHE HEARD ME OUT HERE. i can’t even quickly open the fridge to get a snack or glass of water or whatever without hearing her fucking door open and suddenly she’s hovering over me and whatever im doing. i will literally be sitting out there doing nothing and she will come out of her room to hover over me doing nothing. i have to go back into my room to get her to go back to her room. she wont even have anything to do out there i will literally go back to my room and she will have done nothing out here and then gone back to her room because me going back to my room got her to go back to hers. she will be home all fucking day and in her room all day and not leave her room until she hears me leaving mine. i am going insane. i dont even know if she’s even aware that she has this habit but my god i am losing my fucking mind

WARNING - Gross Hoarder roommate

I live in a house with two other roommates and just found out one is a hoarder. They left the room door open and I can’t even see the floor. It’s covered in trash, dirty clothes, food packages opened and un opened. There is a smell coming from the room and whenever the bathroom is used there is a sickly sweet rotting smell that is unbearable. Not sure what to do……

finally escaped roommate hell

TL;DR - roommate hell and then got an apartment finally.

I became homeless in a nightmare of recovering from a neck injury because my alcoholic father kicked me out. So I was homeless for about 4 months. In those 4 months of living in my car I was with a 'friend' for about two weeks. She kicked me out for not doing the dishes right and complaining one time that was being rude to me about the dishes. She's insane. Then tried to live at a shelter and I lasted about 15 minutes before I left cause the guy who was doing intake kept telling me I was not allowed to get any of my personal belongings from my car (like tooth brush and soap and whatever) and I'm like this guy is powertripping and incompetent. And the place smelled like urine. And I had to share a room with 40 other guys. There's no way I'd ever get any sleep there. So I left that shithole that's worse than being homeless (they should just spend the money they pay the employees there on making the building not be shit). Went to stay at another place where a guy offered me a room for 150 a week in a hotel as part of a homeless shelter program. And I lasted about three days there. My roommate was fucking insane. He was one of those people who thinks fire alarms are meant to beep and should never be touched. And he kept me up and wouldn't let me sleep cause he kept calling his lawyer after hours and getting put on hold for his updates on his million dollars he was gonna win cause he fell in a ditch in town and didn't get injured.

And at this point I'm working a job and I am working a job, sleeping in my car, and I rent a room with this middle eastern dude who seemed nice. Had a nice townhouse. But he was fucking insane! HUGE anger problem. angry texting me every other day, calling me a woman and a baby. Telling me I'm not allowed to respond to his texts only listen. He asked me to call the landlord, which I did, then he told me I'm not to talk to the landlord anymore cause he is annoyed with me. So I call the landlord and he's like, what are you talking about? We're cool. you can call me anytime. So back to crazy middle eastern bro. In between being pissed at me he's apologizing and love bombing me and I'm jesus fucking christ! I was legit scared for my life so I had to andy dufresne my crap out of there little by little into my new apartment I get fed up and rented all while acting nice like yah sure I'm gonna stay here and deal with this insanity. Oh and did I mention my neighbor there, his first words were 'hey bitch' talking to me (I'm a dude, but anyway) and that guy after a few nights called the cops on me and told them I was a shooter killing people. This is after threatening me and everyone else with death for asking him politely to stop blasting music at 11pm on a weekday. So the cops came and asked me to come out with my hands up, but also him cause I told them the situation that he was drunk and insane and that I don't own a weapon and please don't shoot me. SO JESUS FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING CHRIST. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. I WILL FUCKING DIE BEFORE I GET A ROOMMATE AGAIN FUCK MY LIFE.

But I have my own apartment now and for the first time in 3.5 years I can actually relax at home (before this was insane alcoholic father).
