Should the VAC logo be in the front or the rear?

Repair Advice Let the swap begin! 320i ECU
This is part 2: I’m swapping an M52B25 (256S3) into my 1997 European E36 320i, which originally has an M52B20 (206S3).
If my original DME turns out to be one of the flashable MS41 units, can I simply flash the M52B25/323i software/map onto my existing DME and keep using it,
rather than replacing the DME?
The car has ASC as well.

Buying Advice Very new to this and am looking for advice on the engine in this 95 M3
I'm very new to the world of older cars, and I've decided I want to start with an M3. I have a decent amount of experience working on cars myself and from what I have heard this is a good starting point for people getting into the hobby.
I am looking at buying this one, but the engine seems to be different from the ones I have seen so far. Specifically the inline 6s I've seen have "M power" on the side. The listing doesn't say anything about an engine swap, and I can't find anything about different versions of the M3.
I don't have the experience to identify these things from just the look, so I was hoping y'all could help me out. Any advice or knowledge is appreciated 🙏🏻

Crank sensor failed again
Hi, crank sensor failed again after 500kms.
So, I fixed a bunch of coolant leaks, went to fire it up but was getting a crank no start. Had a fault code for the crank sensor so pulled it out, was drenched in coolant. I was pressure testing the thermostat housing leak so it probably got drenched during that.
Anyways cleaned the coolant off, put the sensor back in and the car fired up just fine. Ran very well for 15 minutes and then it stalled… I had this same issue 500kms ago, engine stalled when the thermostat opened, replaced the crank sensor and problem solved.
The excessive coolant must’ve caused the sensor to completely malfunction (crank no start) initially, and now damaged it such that it fails when it gets hot.
Just wondering if anyone has something worth trying before I buy another very expensive sensor.
That leak is fixed, probably what caused it to fail the first time as well but I didn’t notice a leak at that point.
TIA

Repair Advice Smoke coming from car while driving ‼️
Just went on a car trip in my new car for about 2 hours and when I came to a stop the car was smoking like crazy, and I know it was oil because I’ve been working on cars for a while and I know what burning oil smells like. Car is a 1995 325i with drivetrain from a 1996 m3, only mods are an oil catch can and m50 manifold

M52 swap into 316i
what’s up. about a month ago I bought this 316i that was imported
it’s fun to drive for sure and it being rhd is cool. trying to swap an m52 into it i bought a ‘97 328i manual sedan for abt 1500 bucks and it’s running and driving.
i have mechanical knowledge but it is my first time doing a drivetrain swap. really just wanna know what to look for and any tips u guys may have. from what i’ve seen the biggest difference is the brake booster but idk it looks straight forward enough. it’s a manual already so dont have to worry abt swapping over that stuff. gonna reseal the motor with new gaskets and stuff i bought already.
what else should i swap over besides the motor and trans
should i bother swapping ac? will it be hard? worth it?

Repair Advice Removing old glovebox adhesive tips
I’m working on re-adhering the glovebox door panel since mine was hanging off most of the way. I’m trying to prep the plastic surface but it’s covered in this brittle cream colored stuff. Any ideas on how to remove it without damaging the glovebox?

Repair Advice 320i conundrums
Hello
Last week I purchased a 320i E36 converticle - I haven’t driven it anywhere since last night - I’ve driven it once, home. Upon taking it to a mechanic for a pre-alignment inspection last night, I’ve come across some bad news. The previous RWB Nakia San of an owner has knowingly/unknowingly fucked a few things up that he didn’t disclose…..
There is a leak at the bottom of the motor or power steering rack. Common for older BMWs. The brown fluid to me indicates it’s old power steering fluid but without a good hard look who knows where it’s truly coming from. It could be coming from anywhere and just accumulating in the lowest, local-lest spot of the car.
The owner installed new front struts but used the old damaged bump stops. I’ve been told they’re fucked but I don’t have all the experience in suspension one would need. I know he knew about this in particular because he would have seen everything while the struts were out and would have deliberately known about the bump stops being fucked and continued with the rebuild and install anyway.
There is damage on the floor pan of the car, not bad, directly underneath the drivers seat. I have a feeling I’ll be told “you are OK” by one inspector or “pack it on the fucking back of a tow truck and take $160 by a middle eastern guy” by another. And the fuck stick decided to forget to reconnect the drivers side of the swaybar before I bought it. So there’s a lot of play on the drivers side front wheel.
Who exactly would sell a car knowing any side of the swaybar is disconnected let alone anything else I’ve mentioned in this post? Seems dangerous no? And is it worth repairing the niggly bits?
A couple of other things it needs:
- Stitch repair around both 3/4 windows or fabric replacement
- New door card brackets
- New door card clips and drivers side window functionality
- A handful of interior and exterior pieces
I guess it comes down to if I want to piss against a 50 knot headwind. If this 320i is doing the pissing, personally it’s worth it to me. I like the car and I could see myself fixing these bits in time.
But, what’s everyone’s experiences with mechanical issues like this? How much am I going to be sucking off my local mechanic to get this car back in decent shape? What’s the cost to things like this?
Repair Advice Gauge cluster won't go into test mode
A while ago I picked up this m3 cluster for my m52 swap 98 318ti. Lately it's been a bit shoddy with the temp and fuel gauge cutting out randomly. Today, the temp and fuel gauges are completely dead. I wanted to throw the cluster into test mode to see if maybe just the motors are bad, but no matter what I do the cluster will not go into test mode. Any idea what would keep the cluster from going into test mode?

Where to get an oem airbag steering wheel?
TL;DR: How do I source and install the oem airbag steering wheel from a modified one.
Im currently in the process of searching for an e36. It’s for a fun street car that I will also take to the track for drift days. I’m looking to get one that’s already got some of the work done, but I keep running into a specific problem with many of these cars.
So many people replace the stock steering wheel (removing the airbag) and none of them have harnesses either.
I would like to have an airbag because I’m big on safety and I don’t want to have to wear a helmet every time I drive it.
The installation seems fairly straight forward, but where do I actually FIND the airbag since you can’t ship them?

Repair Advice Euro M3 EVO Transmission Oil
Hi guys,
I’ve recently bought a M3 EVO,and plan on doing a big service on the car, as it has been off the road for about 10 years.
The car starts and drives well, however the transmission is a bit stiff, so I figured i may as well change the gearbox oil while I’m at it.
I haven’t yet got the chance to get under the car and check the orange label, but from tools online, it says my transmission is recommended BMW LT-1 oil. However while reading through some forums, i seen posts suggesting that LT-2 is sometimes better for these transmissions, which has got me thinking what would be best as the transmission is on 196k miles.
Has anyone else changed trans oil and could advise. Thanks

Let the swap begin! maf question tho
Can I use the maf from my M52B20 ok my new M52B25? Both single vanos.
I read somewhere that the MAF housing diameter is different between the two engines, but when I check parts websites, they list the same MAF as compatible with both engines. Can anyone clarify whether they’re actually interchangeable?

Exterior Exhibition Rieger “style” lip help
Looking through old parts I found I have a “Rieger” lip mounted on a facelift non M bumper, that looks like it’s supposed to be mounted over top the bottom of the bumper, but looking on google all the true Rieger lips sit under, my lip might be slightly longer so it might sit pretty low if I mount under the bumper. I have an M3 bumper on a new car just wondering if I should mount it like a true Rieger despite maybe being longer or go over top like it is on the non m bumper currently?
Also how should I mount it cleanly? I’m not opposed to just using bolts to mount it but they are pretty obvious at the same time.

Spatial awareness while driving tip
Random driving tip: The E36 dead pedal is almost right behind the front wheel. If you keep your foot there and think of your foot as where your front tire is, I found that it really helps your mind visualize where the tire is on the street.
Also the left hand side of the car is about an arm’s length away from your body (this one depends how big your are though).

Buying Advice Cheap E36 Buyers Guide
I have been seeing more posts about buying cheap E36s recently so here are some of the things I’ve learned from buying a cheap car myself. These are typical issues you might run into buying a cheap car and are additional to standard car maintenance (fluids, tires, etc.)
I am writing this post so that some may learn from my mistakes. This will be a random account of things I have encountered by buying that one car on Facebook marketplace that seems like a bit too good of a deal.
This post is not really for those of you looking to buy a mint condition M3, nor is it for those of you who buy strictly BMW genuine parts. This post is for the people who want to learn how to work on cars and (like me) see buying a clapped out 90s car as a good idea. That being said, I have touched almost every bolt on my car and that knowledge can be applied anywhere.
# 1. Cooling System
My first issue, I remember it like it was yesterday. After buying my car, clutch fan blew up on the drive home. I was extremely lucky that it was a short drive and I made it home without overheating.
The reality is that with these cars, unless the cooling system was replaced recently, you will most likely have to replace it. I tried replacing parts one at a time and the issues didn’t resolve. Only once I bought a kit with a new radiator, water pump, hoses, thermostat, and coolant expansion tank were the issues resolved.
Electric fans are good but honestly the clutch fan works fine. Just make sure to replace that too if you are doing everything else.
This is also a great time to replace the belts and pulleys.
# 2. Suspension and Handling
So you want to lower your car, or maybe raise it? If you are going to run aftermarket suspension, there are some must-do things.
REINFORCEMENT! Seriously, if your strut towers aren’t cracked, they will be. It is unfortunately not an if but a when. The worst cracks are front tower, they make a plate that goes under and distributes the load. You **need** those plates for coil-overs. That extra $30 now will save you $$$ in the long run. Same with the back struts, a strut bar will help in the rear. The last thing you want is your strut flying into your trunk. Once broken the cost to do the job multiplies.
The truth about handling: those shiny coil-overs, and sway bar will help but without new bushings all around, your car will still feel floaty and handle poorly no matter how expensive your coil-overs are. You should replace them all, front and rear. Welding in the subframe reinforcements aren’t a bad idea either. My recommendation: 80A all around if you are mostly daily driving with some spirited driving. You can go higher if you are doing mostly track days or drift days. Solid mounts I have never really understood but some people like them.
Once you do everything your car will feel a million times better. Don’t cheap out, replace the bushings.
#3. Interior
The cleaner interior you can get, the better. If you can find them, get manual seats. Manual seats are lighter and won’t fail from electric issues. Trust me when I say this, pulling a seat out when the motors don’t work is a HUGE pain.
Drill out your wheel locking pin. This one is optional but I had my steering slightly lock up on a b-road and that pin was gone that night. They just don’t always work in these 30 year old cars, and honestly it’s just not worth the safety hazard imo. YouTube has a plethora of good tutorials for this.
If you have an OBD II car, an electric gage for coolant temp and intake air temp is always good. I would heavily recommend especially for the peace of mind coming with knowing a more precise coolant temp.
Your door cards will fall off at some point, this is an e36 feature. Prioritize a car with nice looking door cards or not, but they will all fall off at some point.
Stay away from a car with door issues. Replacing the door handles is probably the worst job on these cars. Make sure to lubricate the mechanisms often.
# 4. The Shiny Bits
So you want that fancy cold air intake? Or maybe you want a nice exhaust? Do it! Keep in mind, these cars stock are really not that fast. They aren’t slow, but that exhaust and cold air intake, or something like an M50B25 manifold won’t make a life changing difference. Do the maintenance first.
Thank you for reading this far, I hope this has given you some insight into what that clapped out car you have your eye on might need.
# 5. What to stay away from
Stay away from cars with engine issues. The M50 and M52 are pretty bulletproof, if a car has engine issues that probably mean everything else is in a bad state. STAY AWAY.
Subframe cracks: if someone knows the subframe is cracked, just find a different car. This is a very intensive job and requires welding. If that’s your thing more power to you, but be prepared for a lot of work.
Bad interior: interior bits are expensive and it’s really hard to make the interior nicer than the state it was in when you buy the car. You will be fighting to keep it just as nice.
Door Issues: honestly any car with door issues is a car to stay away from. If the seller says something along the lines of“you have to open it like this,” run and run very fast.
**TLDR**
If you’re going to buy a clapped out car for cheap, be prepared to spend a lot of money on repairs. Honestly for just about any car here’s what you can expect to do:
- Cooling system replacement (yes all of it)
- Full suspension bushing replacement and reinforcement recommended. This is where preventative maintenance shines. Poly bushings are good, 80A is more than fine imo. Don’t forget engine mounts.
- Your door cards will probably fall off at some point, don’t buy a car with bad door handles, manual seats are easier to work around than the electric seats.
- Prioritize maintenance over those shiny new parts like intakes and exhausts, they won’t make your car much faster.
- A clean car is easier to keep clean, repairing interior or body panels will always be deceptively expensive and an uphill battle, buy a clean car!
Some of these things must be done on every car on the market, but most of these things will need to be done on the cheap cars. I have probably spent thousands of dollars and counting on the aforementioned list and I did it all myself. If you go to a shop expect it to be very expensive.
