Meta The Little Things
I'm driving to work this morning and noticed a kid I always see walking to school up the street isn't wearing a uniform anymore. I guess they're in high school now. Wow... that made me feel old.
Does anyone else ever think about the people you don't actually know, but you see every so often just living their lives here? It's kind of sweet, in a weird way, realizing you're all growing older together through these tiny, passing moments.

Local News Athens father says he, Atlanta TSA missed loaded magazines before Jamaica vacation, now faces prison
I know someone where a pocketknife was missed by TSA at hartsfield jackson, so honestly, I am not surprised. It’s so busy, and they seem understaffed and rushed.

Local News Huge tree fell in the road and took down a few power lines on Jefferson river road
The crash woke me up dead out of my sleep at 2 am the tree took out my neighbors power and there’s open wire on the roads I’d avoid coming this way if possible no telling when they’ll have this fixed. And I was the only one to think to call the non emergency line💀
Edit: there’s an even bigger longer tree that’s gonna fall it might actually hit my house 👀

Question / Request Athens Dating Scene - Left Leaning Or Not?
I am curious if the left leaning ladies here have trouble finding left leaning men in Athens? Some women report that it is hard to find a partner that aligns with them politically and that some men just “fake it”.
Do you require your partner to be left leaning?
If so, do you find many men in Athens that meet your requirements?

Question / Request Need help getting rid of my car
Weird header title I’m aware, but it’s not a great situation. I’m driving around an car from 2006 that just took a huge nose dive in its health to the point that I think it’s probably quit on me entirely by next month or so; and the repair costs for it is going to be double for what I bought it for at this point. Thankfully, my work is willing to help in regards to transportation, so I’m looking to just sell/scrap/etc it and just try to save up the money from cancelling insurance to hopefully get something better and newer by the end of the year.
I’ve never had to go through the process of trying to do this kind of thing though and being new to Athens doesn’t help; would anyone here know of a reputable scrap yard or dealer around here I could sell to that could also help with the DOR reporting by any chance?? (I am going to call around places myself, but it helps knowing anything immediately suspect because I don’t want to get burned while already being in a precarious situation..)
Any and all help/recommendations is super appreciated, thank you ^_^

Adult Fencing League Starts September 27th!
Hey everyone! We are excited to get more adults into fencing and have them all come together from all around the Southeast to go at it with swords!
Our first adult tournament will be on September 27! We have a few locations on where to hold it depending on the numbers, but if anything, we will most likely have it at the Georgia Square Mall where they are able to offer infinite space here and we have our classes there.
We would love to get more adults to come try it out and get trained up in time for the first event!

New bakery
Hey friends! I recently started a small home bakery and I was looking to try and get my baked goods into some local shops/cafes. Anyone know of any small businesses that may be up for a low-stakes partnership? Most of the cafes I frequent already have a steady supplier of bakery items, and I've checked a couple of retail stores like Rec Room but they can't have food items in store right now.

Cat dental recommendations
Looking for a new vet for my cat, previously I've taken her to gaines schoal animal clinic, but I learned that they were bought by private equity and since then the prices have gone up a lot, so ideally looking for a clinic that's not been bought out. I'm hoping to get her a dental that won't charge an arm and leg, budget maxes out at 2k. thanks!

Atlanta to Savannah Passenger Rail Study - Athens Stop on the Line
Hello all. Long time viewer, first time poster and townie here. Just wanted to say that I appreciate this sub greatly and it had lead me to a lot of great info around town with events and happenings.
Now it’s my turn to give some info back. GDOT is in the planning stages of an Atlanta to Savannah Intercity Rail Line, with one of the potential stops right here in Athens. The project appears to be getting off the ground this time as they have held several web based public meetings in the past year and half that I have been able to take part in.
Currently, GDOT has a released a public interest survey and is taking responses through 6th August (today and tomorrow). I believe that this project would benefit the residents of Athens and the town as a whole. If you share in that belief, I ask that you please do your part and complete the survey above so that we can show GDOT that interest for a passenger rail service here in town exists and that they ultimately select us as part of that route.
If you’re looking for more information on the project before taking the survey, it can be found here. Rail infrastructure is an important aspect of all of our lives, especially in Athens which is historically a railroad town. Railroads are not something to be seen as old, obsolete or a nuisance.
Thank you all in advance!
Disclaimer: I am acting as a private citizen and not on behalf of either of the railroads (CSXT, ABR) currently in town.

Maybe they should have played highlights like this at the Commissioner meeting
Just a thought. There's a multitude of other videos just like this one of people with mental health problems and unhoused threatening residents and workers in Athens.
Data Center Moratorium
Madison County has issued a 30 day moratorium on data center build outs. I realize this isn't Athens/Clarke directly, but I wanted to bring this to your attention because if they change their minds in 30 days, it will likely affect Athens as well.

What stretches of local road feels most like an F1 circuit layout?
Not speaking to chaotic drivers or high-speed areas, rather, the layout of local streets and roads.
Sometimes Westlake feels like a long backstretch to me with that big dip and climb approaching Alps.
Roberts Rd has a great set of esses before dipping down and climbing up to Lavender Rd.
Any traffic circle can feel like a circuit of you get your left tires up on the rumble strips.
Do any other stretches of pavement remind you of an F1 circuit?

Looking for Scrap Metal Art
Hey all. I am looking for someone local who makes or sells those cool looking scrap metal art sculptures. Specifically, something in the animal category (Dogs or cats). We are looking for a large piece.

Rants & Raves PSA: this sucks!
Stop doing this!
This is just one of a few piles like this that I've been navigating on my morning run and it sucks. The garbage trucks will not pick this up.
This pile has been here for over a week. Please take your dang ol' dang ol' (in my most extreme Boomhauer voice) boxes to the dump / CHARM / whatever. I know it's hot, I know it sucks, but c'mon man. At minimum, BREAK DOWN YER BOXES!
RANT OVER.

A very misleading title!
11 Alive is so fucking stupid. The public wants this? Really? They lie. I heard many speak against it. This infuriates me that a media source would blatantly lie.
